Sports / AC Milan Win The Serie A For The First Time in 11 Years by domesifa(m): 9:01pm On May 22, 2022
A.C. Milan clinched their first Italian Serie A title in 11 years, after earning a 3-0 final-day victory at Sassuolo on Sunday, with a double from Olivier Giroud and one goal from Franck Kessie, sealing the Scudetto in style.

Stefano Pioli's side came into the final round of fixtures knowing a point would be enough for them to finish on top, ahead of rivals Inter Milan, but after Giroud scored in the 17th minute, a 19th Serie A title never looked in doubt.

Frenchman Giroud scored a second goal in the 32nd minute to put Pioli's men on course for the trophy, without needing to be concerned with how Inter were doing on the back field at the San Siro stadium.

Politics / Breaking: Court Rejects Nnamdi Kanu’s Application For Bail by domesifa(m): 11:32am On May 18, 2022
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday, declined to grant bail to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, pending the determination of the treasonable felony charge the Federal Government preferred against him.

Trial Justice Binta Nyako held that Kanu must explain the reason why he breached the previous bail that was given to him, before he could enjoy another favourable discretion from the court.

“Until the issue of absence of the defendant for his trial, with all the bail conditions breached, is determined, the instant application of the defendant for bail will at best be premature and it is refused.

“However, the defendant is at liberty to refile the application”, Justice Nyako held.

The court noted that Kanu’s trial had since 2015, suffered various setbacks owing to over 19 interlocutory applications that have been filed in the matter.

It, therefore, implored the parties to allow the case to proceed on trial to enable the charge to be determined, one way or the other.

Kanu had in the application he filed pursuant to sections 6(6) and 36(5) and (6) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, as well as sections 161, 162, 163 and 165 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA, 2015, prayed the court to release him on bail, pending by determination of the charge against him.

He equally prayed the court to order the Department of State Services, DSS, to produce the medical report of the defendant who is currently in its custody.

Kanu, told the court that he was severely tortured for eight days in Kenya, before he was repatriated back to Nigeria for continuation of his trial.

He alleged that his health condition deteriorated, following “a highly poisonous substance” he said was injected into his system, which he said is causing him to have constipation and increased heart beat.

Insisting that the DSS lacks the necessary medical facility to cater for his health needs, Kanu, told the court that he was confined to solitary confinement where he alleged that he was daily exposed to mental torture.

The IPOB leader told the court that he has “credible and reliable sureties”, pledging that he would not commit any offence while on bail.

Besides, Kanu, argued that he has not been tried or convicted by any court of law in the country, contending that he was entitled to bail.

He further drew attention of the court to the fact that he was previously released on bail on health ground.

However, FG, urged the court to refuse the bail application, insisting that Kanu, having realized the gravity of the case against him, would run away from the country and not make himself available for trial.

The letter dated May 14, 2022 and signed by CAN’s General Secretary, Joseph Daramola, reads: “I have been directed by the CAN President, His Eminence, Rev. Dr. Samson Olasupo A. Ayokunle, to request all Church Leaders, through your various Churches to organize a PEACEFUL PROTEST in honour of one of our daughters, DEBORAH YAKUBU who was gruesomely murdered on Thursday, 12 May, 2022 at the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto in Sokoto State by some Islamic extremists.

Politics / CBN Gov Emefiele Sues INEC Over Alleged Plan To Disqualify Him From Primaries by domesifa(m): 1:15pm On May 09, 2022
Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has filed a suit before a Federal High Court in Abuja over the alleged plan to disqualify him from the 2023 presidential primaries slated for the end of this month.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given political parties a deadline of June 3 to submit their candidates for the 2023 elections.

On Friday, Daily Trust had reported how some groups purchased the expression of interest and nomination forms of the ruling All Progressives Congress ((APC) for Emefiele.

This had triggered outrage as many called on the CBN governor to step down.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, who described Emefiele’s interest in the 2023 Presidency as “a joke taken too far”, had asked President Muhammadu Buhari to fire him if he refused to step down.

Some lawyers had argued that Emefiele was unfit to run going by Section 84 (12) of the Electoral Act.

The section states that no political appointee at any level shall be a voting delegate or be voted for at the Convention or Congress of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election.

But in documents seen by Daily Trust, Emefiele, through his lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, argued that he is not a political appointee and by provision of the constitution, he is expected to resign a month before the February 25, 2023, presidential election.

“It is our respectful submission that the plaintiff is not a political appointee as envisaged by the Electoral Act and as he seeks to contest for the Office of the President in the new electoral calendar, he shall only be governed or guided by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, (1999), as amended, which requires that he gives at least thirty (30) days’ notice of resignation, withdrawal or retirement from the office of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria before any elections,” the document read.

He also contended that a Federal High Court in Umuahia, Abia State, had nullified section 12 (cool of the Electoral Act.

INEC and the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) were joined in the suit.

On Saturday, Emefiele declined the presidential forms bought for him, saying he would use his resources to purchase them if he is interested in the race.

Speaking further on the 2023 Presidency, Emefiele said God would decide for him “in the next few days”.

The incident sparked outrage on social media, with many calling on government to act.

Religion / Jehovah’s Witnesses Open Kingdom Halls Two Years After COVID-19 Lockdown by domesifa(m): 10:50am On Apr 04, 2022
After two years of being shut, Jehovah’s Witnesses have opened their places of worship, known as Kingdom Halls, which were closed worldwide.

The Kingdom Halls were shut due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which claimed millions of lives around the world.

The group’s spokesperson in Nigeria, Olusegun Eroyemi, in a video announcement noted that its public activities were suspended to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among members and their friends.

He said, “We didn’t want to be associated with spreading COVID. We didn’t want it to be said that someone contracted COVID because he attended a function organised by Jehovah’s witnesses. That was why we had to wait until what we thought was a good time to go and this time, we think, is the right time.”

While the Kingdom Halls were shut, members of the religious group held their services, known as Christian meetings, virtually.

As the Witnesses returned to their Kingdom Halls, they also invited their friends and neighbours to two important programs that will hold in their Kingdom Halls in the month of April.

The two events are a 30-minute program titled ‘Where Can You Find Real Hope?, which will be held during the week of April 4, and the annual observance of the death of Jesus Christ on the evening of April 15, 2022.

According to a statement made available to The PUNCH, Eroyemi stated that both events will be held at Kingdom Halls across Nigeria.

“These are difficult but not hopeless times. Attending one of these special events will provide the needed courage to look to the future with confidence in God’s promises,” the Witnesses’ spokesperson said.

Sports / Premier League Record 103 New Covid Cases (BBC) by domesifa(m): 12:07am On Dec 28, 2021
A record 103 Premier League players and staff tested positive for Covid in the seven days up to and including 26 December, new figures show.

The previous weekly league record was 90 cases, announced a week ago.

A total of 15,186 tests were carried out between 20 and 26 December, as the Premier League has reintroduced daily testing of players and staff.

Fifteen English top-flight games have been called off so far during December because of coronavirus cases.

A Premier League statement said: "The Premier League's Covid-19 emergency measures include protocols such as wearing face coverings while indoors, observing social distancing, limiting treatment time, as well as the increased testing.

"The league is continuing to work with clubs to keep people safe by helping mitigate the risks of Covid-19 within their squads. We are also liaising closely with the government, local authorities and supporter groups, while being responsive to any future changes to national or local guidance."

Premier League and EFL clubs recently chose to fulfil festive fixtures despite ongoing Covid-19 disruption.

The Premier League's 20 clubs met last week to discuss the fixture list following a number of postponements.

No vote took place, with two rounds of fixtures remaining in place across five days from 26 December, while the EFL will play games "where it is safe to do so".

Clubs were advised if they have 13 fit players, plus a goalkeeper, they should fulfil their games.

Manchester United were set to visit Newcastle later on Monday to play their first game in more than two weeks following a Covid outbreak within the squad.

Watford's game against West Ham on Tuesday will also be their first game since a 2-1 defeat at Brentford on 10 December.

Wolves' scheduled trip to Arsenal on Tuesday has been postponed because of Covid-19 cases in the Midlands club's camp, with Leeds United's top-flight game against Aston Villa on Tuesday has also been postponed because of an outbreak at the Yorkshire club.

Phones / GSMArena Makes First Review Of Infinix Phone by domesifa(m): 2:44pm On Dec 18, 2021
Popular GSM website GSMArena has made what seems to be first review of an Infinix phone.

GSMArena wrote those:

We don't review Infinix phones too often, mostly due to the brand's only regional popularity. In certain markets, particularly in Africa and South Asia, Infinix has its fair share of market pull.

To provide additional context, Infinix is one of the brands the Chinese Transsion Holding sells phones under. Other major ones include Tecno and Itel. Also, Oraimo for accessories and Carlcare for after-sales service. But, we digress.

The point is that the Infinix Note 11 Pro we have for review today might not be easy to acquire in many places but could very well be a great value, if it's available in your market.

Sports / Covid-19: Aston Villa V Burnley Postponed; Clubs Meet Monday by domesifa(m): 2:05pm On Dec 18, 2021
Aston Villa v Burnley postponed after Villa record 'increased amount' of positive Covid-19 cases

Saturday's Premier League game between Aston Villa and Burnley has been postponed after an "increased amount of positive Covid-19 test results" in the Villa squad.

Villa apologised to Burnley and their fans but said they acted "as swiftly as possible" to "minimise disruption".

The postponement leaves Leeds v Arsenal as Saturday's sole surviving game from the original six-match programme.

The Premier League said Villa did not have enough players to field a team.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/59665333

Meanwhile, Premier League clubs will meet on Monday to discuss the escalating crisis around the coronavirus pandemic.

With nine games postponed over the past week, including five already from this weekend's 10-match fixture list, clubs want the chance to discuss the options.

Managers and captains are also due to hold their own meetings.

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard said he hoped the meetings would provide "clarity" to "a lot of concerns and unanswered questions".

Meanwhile, Premier League chief Richard Masters has written to clubs urging players to get the vaccine and stressed the importance of the league completing the season.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank led calls for all matches to be called off until 26 December to enable a reset.

Some feel the break should be longer - but others such as Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp do not believe it should happen.

The Premier League said on Thursday it intends to carry on playing matches as long as it is safe to do so.

Meanwhile, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has been cleared to resume preparations for Sunday's trip to Newcastle.

The Spaniard had returned an inconclusive coronavirus test and cancelled Friday's news conference, but a subsequent PCR test came back negative.

Crime / Sylvester Oromoni: Police Begin Investigation Into Death Of Dowen Student by domesifa(m): 11:51pm On Dec 04, 2021
The police in Lagos say they have begun an investigation into the death of Sylvester Oromoni, a student of Dowen College in Lekki Lagos.

The student died on Tuesday, after he was allegedly tortured and given a harmful substance by some senior students in the school, over his refusal to join a cult group.

In a statement released on Saturday by Adekunle Ajisebutu, the police spokesperson, the police said investigation has started, despite having not received a formal report of the incident.

“The Lagos State Police Command is not unaware of the reported death of one Sylvester Oromoni, a 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos which is currently going viral on the social media.

“The Command wishes to inform the public that, although no formal report of the incident was made to the police, the Commissioner of Police, upon hearing about it instantly directed the Divisional Police Officer, Maroko Division under whose jurisdiction the place of incident is to immediately visit the school to carry out initial investigation into the incident.

“This directive has been carried out as investigation into the case has since commenced. However, in view of the seriousness of the case, the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, has also been directed to take over investigation of the case immediately,” the statement reads in part.

Background
The news about the late Mr Oromoni, 12, surfaced on the internet on Wednesday, following a post by his cousin, Perrison Oromoni, on issues surrounding his death.

Mr Oromoni said some students of the school “bullied, harassed, and tortured his late cousin for refusing to join their cult group, which led to his eventual death”.

He said tests and X-rays conducted on the deceased showed that he sustained internal injuries from beatings he received from the students.

Although the school immediately reacted to the allegation, saying it was not true and that the student was sick and treated at school before being sent home, a video of the last minutes of the deceased where he listed the names of his abusers was released.

Following the controversies surrounding the death of the student, the Lagos State government, on Friday, shut the school indefinitely.

“We reassure the family of the late Sylvester Oromoni Junior and Lagosians at large that efforts are being made to unravel the circumstances leading to his demise, even as we reiterate the Government’s commitment to Child Protection,” the ministry said in its statement.

‘Stay calm’
The police have, however, urged members of the public, particularly the deceased’s parents, friends and relatives to stay calm as the police investigate.

Mr Ajisebutu said the Command has deployed all available human and material resources at its disposal to unravel the circumstances surrounding the sad and unfortunate incident.

“While diligent investigation is ongoing, members of the public are advised against taking the law into their own hands. They are also enjoined to refrain from comments that could jeopardise investigation,” the police said.

The Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, who commiserated with the bereaved family, and assured that the outcome of police investigation would be made public in due course.

Education / Sylvester Oromoni: Dowen College Resumes Online Classes After Shutdown by domesifa(m): 10:55pm On Dec 04, 2021
The management of Dowen College, Lagos, has announced the commencement of online academic session despite Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s order to shut down all activities in the school.

Mr Sanwo-Olu’s administration had ordered the indefinite closure of the school on Friday, following the controversies surrounding the death of a 12-year-old student, Sylvester Oromoni Junior. This was to enable proper investigations are carried out.

But the school management, in a mail sent to parents shortly after the shutdown, announced that all academic activities will be held online until further notice.

“We wish to inform you that further to our meeting at the Ministry of Education the school will be shutting down all physical activities till further notice. All learning will move online in the interest of safety and transparency,” the management said in the mail, a screenshot of which was seen on Twitter.

It further commiserated with the family of the Oromoni Junior who died after sustaining injuries over his alleged refusal to join a cult group in the school.

Since the incident, there has been outrage as many called for a complete shutdown of the school and demanded justice for the 12-year-old with #Justiceforsylvester trending on Twitter.

This followed the management’s claim that the deceased only suffered football injuries despite evidence of his last moments that indicated that the 12-year-old was beaten, as his lips were swollen and blood was spotted on his teeth, an indication that he also had injuries in the mouth.

Sylvester Oromoni, the father of the late student had alleged that parents of students responsible for torturing his son were on the move to fly them out of the country.

“The parents of the boys are wealthy. They withdrew them. The school called the parents to pick their wards; interviewed them. Some of the parents are planning to fly the children out of the country,” Mr Oromoni alleged while disclosing that Oromoni Junior was also given a chemical substance.

For days, The Gazette’s efforts to reach the school for comments have been futile.
