Education / JAMB Makes Statement On Direct Entry, Change Of Course/ Institution, Cutoff Mark by domesifa(m): 7:27am On Jul 12, 2017
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has commenced the sale of Direct Entry application form for candidates who have A-level results and wish to gain direct admission to degree programmes in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

JAMB spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, said this in a statement on Tuesday.

The board has equally commenced the sale of UTME application for Nigerians abroad and foreign candidates who desire to attend tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

He explained that the process is as it was with the UTME, where you create a profile and obtain the PINS and proceed for biometric capturing at the CBT centres for Direct Entry candidates.

The board urged all candidates wishing to register through direct entry to obtain the PINS at Interswitch, Remita or any of the commercial banks approved earlier for the vending of UTME PINS.

According to him, “the Board wishes to state that it has not commenced the change of course and institutions as all the approved CBT centres nationwide will be informed about when to start“.

He said candidates need not necessarily come to the Board’s centres for the change. It can be done in any of the CBT centres in order to avoid overcrowding.

“The delay has been occasioned by the Board’s preparation to ensure that the system is smooth and without encumbrances,” Mr Benjamin said.

He said the public should note that every candidate desirous of a change of course or institution will be allowed to do so as the platform will be open until the close of admission.

“Candidates need not panic or get desperate as it will not be closed as being speculated by those who want to use the opportunity of candidates desperation to defraud them”.

The board advised the candidates not to patronise fraudulent individuals or organisations but to visit approved CBT centres and cross check any information they are not too clear about.

“Again, we will continue to enjoin candidates not to be victims of fraudsters who claim to have the capacity to inflate candidates scores, as they do not have such ability.

“When caught, the Board will prosecute both the fraudsters and the candidate who patronise them,” Mr. Benjamin warned.

He added that the board has not determined the cut off marks for 2017.

“This is only done at a policy committee meeting with all stakeholders chaired by the Hon Minister of Education which is yet to hold,” he stressed.
Education / House Of Reps Returns CRK, IRS As Seperate Subjects by domesifa(m): 3:15pm On Jul 11, 2017
By a unanimous voice vote, members of the House of Representatives at plenary today jettisoned the government policy which subsumed Christian Religious Knowledge, CRK in Civic Education as a compulsory subject in the Secondary School curriculum.

This followed a motion titled “Call to make Civic Education an optional instead of a compulsory subject for Senior Certificate Examination”, filed by Hon. Beni Lar from Plateau State. The members after an exhaustive debate on the motion agreed that the policy was incongruent with the spirit and letters of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) on the provision of religious liberties.

The members agreed that students with the inputs of their parents at formative years should be taught the religious subjects of their choice in school.

Essentially, the House while pointing out that the policy makers erred ab initio also agreed that Islamic Studies and CRK should be taught independently and separately in the spirit of the constitution.

It will be recalled that the issue recently became a subject of controversy whereupon tempers flared.

Pencil piece of governor Udom Emmanuel

In my search for people to connect and favour me, i discovered that i am at the first position to connect and favour myself. When i was a kid, i had this burning passion for creative and challenging things. I remember stealing comic books just to draw the characters. I still remember offering myself in secondary school to be flocked in front of ss3 students who were drawing so i could see what they were doing. I remember being mocked at because i drew rubbish. I remember buying pencils upon pencils, watching tutorial videos in lecture room, skipping classes to go and practice how to shade well. I remember getting a job and drawing up to 10 pieces only to select the best one out of it.

The story goes on and on. The product of what you have been seeing now is as the result of the past effort. I promised myself that i will never give up. And i want to thank all my 5000 friends on fb here. You guys have been so supportive. And to my boss mr. Raphael Edem i say God bless you and your family immensely.

Nairaland / General / Akwa Ibom Gives Mobil Quit Notice! Relocate To Akwa Ibom Or Leave Our Land- Akha by domesifa(m): 10:37pm On Jun 30, 2017
Stakeholders in the four core oil host communities in Ibeno, Eket, Esit Eket and Onna Local Government Areas, Akwa Ibom State, have asked the Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited, MPNU, to vacate their lands if it was averse to relocating its administrative headquarters to the state, its operational base, as directed by the Federal Government.

Leaders of the communities, who spoke when the Ad-hoc committee set up by the state House of Assembly, invited them and top management of Mobil for investigative hearing on the controversial N8 billion counterpart fund payment by the company for the construction of Eket-Ibeno road, said the operational license of the multinational oil firm should also be revoked.

Speaking during the hearing, the Paramount Ruler of Ibeno, Owong Effiong Achianga called for the revocation of Mobil’s operational license if the company continues in its lackadaisical attitude adding that the company should pay all environmental hazard compensation.

While presenting the position paper by the core communities before the Committee, the Chairman MPNU’S Core Communities Technical Committee, Chief Nduese Essien, expressed dismay that Mobil despite having made petrol dollars from Akwa Ibom State has refused to relocate its operational base to the State even after the express directive of the Acting President.

The leaders, who strongly complained about the unwillingness of the company to reposition to the state, stressed that the issue of relocation, which is part of the MoU signed with the company, almost 19 years ago, remains one major area of divergence between core communities in the state and the multinational oil giant, over the years.

Nairaland / General / Etisalat Nigeria: FG, NCC, CBN Wade In To Save Telco From Banks by domesifa(m): 4:05pm On Jun 21, 2017
A meeting between the officials of Etisalat Nigeria, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and a consortium of banks has been scheduled for Wednesday.

Etisalat Nigeria may get respite as key institutions are reported to be finding a lasting solution to its financial impasse.

The company has not been able to meet its financial obligation to 10 consortia of banks, which giving rise to a change in shareholding.

The Nigerian institutions have been meeting with the creditor banks to brainstorm to save Etisalat Nigeria from breaking down.

The company is still indebted to the banks to the tune of $1.7billion since 2013 when the loans were first structured. The three parties are also expected to issue a joint statement on the matter soon.

Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services, the parent company of Etisalat Nigeria, informed the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange that a group of Nigerian commercial banks refused to agree to the restructuring of the debt.

The telecoms group said in a statement that its total shares in Etisalat Nigeria have been transferred to United Capital Trustees Limited.

The deadline for the transfer of the shares has been agreed to extend till 5:00 pm Nigerian time on Friday, June 23.

Abu-Dhabi based Etisalat group established Etisalat Nigeria with effective 45 per cent and 25 per cent ordinary and preference shares respectively.

Mr Ibrahim Dikko, Vice President, Regulatory & Corporate Affairs of Etisalat Nigeria, said in a statement made available to Daily Times that the company had begun changes in shareholding in line with its restructuring measures to redress the problem of its huge debt.

Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services, EMTS is promoted by one-time Chairman, United Bank for Africa, UBA, Hakeem Bello-Osagie.

EMTS Holding BV which was established in the Netherlands has up to June 23 to transfer of 100 percent of the company’s shares in Etisalat to the United Capital Trustees Limited, the legal representative of the consortium of banks.

Etisalat Nigeria can confirm discussions are on-going regarding other issues such as the trading name during this transition phase.

The telco also said it had started negotiations with the consortium of lenders which were considering a number of possible options.

“Operations and services to our subscribers remain normal and will in no way be affected as we continue to deliver quality services to our subscribers.

“We will continue to tap into the rich, creative and innovative resources within our workforce to build a stronger business upon the stable foundation we have laid in our nine years of operations,’’ a statement from the company read.

Etisalat commended the government, NCC and CBN for their patriotic zeal and tireless efforts at ensuring collaborative and productive engagement.
Nairaland / General / Etisalat Nigeria Taken Over By Access Bank, Others by domesifa(m): 12:47pm On Jun 20, 2017
Some banks have now taken over the management of telecommunication company, Etisalat Nigeria. The Banks, led by Access Bank PLC and other local and foreign banks have taken over the telecommunication company effective June 15. The take-over came as a result of a futile effort by Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services, EMTS, promoted by-one time Chairman, United Bank for Africa, UBA, Hakeem Bello-Osagie, to reach agreement with the banks on debt restructuring plan in the protracted $1.72 billion (about N541.8 billion) debt impasse. However, EMTS Holding BV, established in the Netherlands, has up to June 23 to complete the transfer of 100 percent of the company’s shares in Etisalat to the United Capital Trustees Limited, the legal representative of the consortium of banks. Etisalat Group, the parent company of Etisalat Nigeria, announced the takeover on Tuesday in a letter filed to the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirate. A letter dated June 2017, with No. Ho/GCFO/152/85 signed by Etisalat Group Chief Financial Officer, Serkan Okandan, noted that efforts by EMTS to restructure the repayment of the syndicated loan by a consortium of banks to Etisalat Nigeria collapsed. It added, “Further to our announcement dated 12 February, 2017, Emirates Telecommunications Group Company PJSC, ‘Etisalat Group’[ would like to inform you that Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services Limited ‘EMTS’ (‘the company), established in Nigeria and an associate of Etisalat Group with effective ownership of 45% and 25% ordinary and preference shares respectively, defaulted on a facility agreement with a syndicate of Nigerian banks (‘EMTS Lenders’). “Subsequently, discussions between EMTS and the EMTS Lenders did not produce an agreement on a debt restructuring plan. “Accordingly, the Company received a default and security Enforcement Notice on 9 June 2017 requesting EMTS Holding BV (EMTS BV) established in the Netherlands, and through which Etisalat Group holds its interest in the company) requiring EMTS BV to transfer 100% of its shares in the company to the United Capital Trustees Limited (the Security Trustee”) of the EMTS Lenders by 15 June 2017. “Subsequently the EMTS Lenders extend the deadline for the share transfer to 5.00 pm Lagos time on 23 June 2017,” the filing said. The Telecommunication company has been under pressure since 2016, following the demand notice for the recovery of a $1.72 billion (about N541.8 billion) loan facility it obtained from a consortium of banks in 2015. The loan, which involved a foreign-backed guaranty bond, was for the mobile telephone operator to finance a major network rehabilitation and expansion of its operational base in Nigeria. Unable to meet its debt servicing obligations agreed since 2016, the consortium, prodded by their foreign partners, threatened to take over the company and its assets across the country. But, the intervention of the telecom sector regulator, Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, and its financial sector counterpart, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, succeeded in persuading the banks to rethink their threat and give Etisalat a chance to renegotiate the loan’s repayment schedule.

Family / My Wife Beats Me At Will, Man Tells Court by domesifa(m): 3:06pm On Jun 16, 2017
A retiree, Taofeek Giwa, on Friday prayed an Idi-Ogungun Customary Court, Agodi-Ibadan, to dissolve the seven-year-old marriage with Abiodun Omotayo, on the ground that the respondent beats him at will. Giwa who recently retired from the Nigerian Prisons Service, on June 9, filed a suit, seeking dissolution of the marriage. In his testimony, the petitioner said Omotayo had turned him to a punching bag and that she constantly beats him. According to Giwa, the defendant always used the advantage of her huge stature to oppress and treat him as inferior to her. “She beats me on any slight provocation, I dare not correct her mistake, in fact she is in the habit of tearing my cloth. “My lord, the worst she did recently was that she poisoned my meal in an attempt to kill me and I am not ready to die now. “I plead with the court to separate us to avoid untimely death so that I can take care of my children and enjoy the fruits of my labour. “This is because I just retired from active service to my country and I want to enjoy the fruit of my labour.’’ Giwa said. Omotayo in her defence, denied all the allegations, but told the court that the petitioner was the one who used to pursue her with machete. She agreed with the divorce request, saying she was tired of living with the plaintiff because of his adulterous life. She, however, prayed the court to grant him custody of the only child of the marriage for proper upbringing. President of the court, Mukaila Balogun, dissolved the marriage and gave the custody of the only child to the respondent. Balogun further ordered the plaintiff to pay N3, 000 monthly allowance to the defendant for the maintenance of the child. He appealed to both parties to maintain peace and jointly take care of the only child of the marriage

Education / JAMB Says 62,140 Candidates Are To Take Supplementary UTME July 1 by domesifa(m): 9:34pm On Jun 14, 2017
THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has said about 62,140 candidates will sit for the supplementary Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination scheduled for Saturday July 1, 2017.

Registrar and Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is-haq Oloyede, made this known on Wednesday in Abuja.

The JAMB boss, also announced the cancellation of results of 59,698 candidates that sat for the main UTME, saying another 24 CBT centres have been suspended for one year for failing to live up to expectations.

He said the Board has blacklisted 48 Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres over their involvement in extortion and organised examination malpractices during the 2017 UTME.

Those that would sit for the supplementary UTME include the 3,811 candidates who did late registration when the main examination was ongoing and 683 who had biometric-related issues.

According to Prof Oloyede, 1,386 candidates have their results cancelled over examination malpractice, 57,646 results were also affected as a result of centres-induced malpractices while the results of 666 candidates were cancelled due to multiple examinations.

Oloyede said, “Also, that the examination was conducted in 140 examination towns and 642 examination centres which ran 7,359 sessions. Moreover, that we received various reports on cases of examination malpractices.

“Therefore, the meeting approved the following; the commendation of staff of JAMB and other agencies involved in the administration of the examination for exemplary conduct, particularly where monetary inducement was given to centres, and their collaborators were turned over to the board.

“The rescheduling of examinations are for candidates of centres with mass malpractices but who are deemed to be innocent, biometric non-verification machine-related issues, technical and log-out issues, late registration and four lost sessions in three centres.

“We also approved the suspension of 24 computer-based centres for one year due to technical issues. These centres would not participate in the 2018 UTME but they can be considered for 2019 and above.

“We also delisted 48 centres from participating in the board’s examination in the future due to technical deficiencies, extortion, organised examination malpractices, and other damaging infractions. We also approved Saturday, July 1, for the rescheduled examination.

You should have sorted out this issue with your bank before now. Anyway, since the registration is yet to begin, you have to wait till then to know if the problem will affect you or not. Cheers!
