HealthThe Unbelievable Things OAU Medical Students Saw During An Outreach (Photos) by DonLo(op):
Life is not in its abundance but in the lives touched by our actions. This philosophy guides Obafemi Awolowo University Medical students which saw them mark the 2016 World Hypertension day in an unusual way. The budding medics spent their day creating awareness and screening market men and women in the biggest market in Ile-Ife, Osun State called Oja Titun. Over 150 people were screened for hypertension and diabetes mellitus while also providing necessarily referral to Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospitals Complex where neccessary. And all these were done without a charge.

The experience today further goes on to reiterate the need for routine medical check up, at least blood pressure. A 600 level medical student while discussing with KuduCancer was quoted to have said 'If I'm permitted to use this term 'walking corpses', I'll say we saw a lot of them today. We saw a lot of people with blood pressure of over 140/90mmHg who had no prior knowledge of being hypertensive. In fact, a particular woman got me shocked when her blood pressure measurement read 170/110mmHg. Unfortunately she wasn't aware and she goes about her daily routine as if nothing is wrong. We would have taken her to the hospital but the knowledge of the NLC strike action affecting paramedics within the hospital left us with no option. One wonders why those providing essential services such as healthcare should go on strike.'

This is a further reminder for us all to check our Blood Pressure as the World marks another World Hypertension Day this week. Be sure you are not a walking corpse by checking your blood pressure. Kudos to the OAU medical students for this life touching outreach.

I havent check mine but sometimes my heart beat faster dan usual without any provocation. And wen am frightened, i sometimes gasp for air. Du u think im hypertensive?
It is something you should pay attention to especially the increased heart rate without provocation.. See a doctor but if I were you the first step will be to check my blood pressure and this a chemist shop can do for me. Thanks
HealthRe: Hypertension: The Silent Killer by DonLo(op): 7:27pm On May 20, 2016
Rapidx:
The ratio of the prevalence of hypertention amongst Nigerians is more than the " 1 in 3" the Op quoted here.

2 in every 3 Nigerians are hypertensive. Then, the big issue is that more than 3/4 of those who managed to come forward to be diagnosed ended up stopping their medication as soon as their pressure seem to be normal. This is contrary to the conventional guideline which stipulates that the medication MUST be taking life long. Your pressure elevates sporadically once you're hypertensive. So you have to take the medication till the end of life.

One thing again is to find the medication that works for you. One brand of hypertention medication is not a blanket one for all sufferers. The medication that brought down the pressure of Mr A might not do same in MOST CASES for Mr B. People have to excise patience, work with their doctor, spend a little money to find the brand that works for them. This is key.
I quite agree with you on all you wrote except the epidemiology. I'm quoting WHO though but come to think of it 2 in 3 embarassed That's on the high side now.

THE SILENT KILLER

Mama Emeka, my childhood neighbour collapsed while going to her store. We all thought it’s a product of her many enemies, since she was a known trouble maker earning her the alias ‘Trouble’. Emeka her son became an orphan and a drop-out as there was nobody to support him. Mama Emeka was said to be healthy that morning before her death which begs the question, what could have gone wrong. The only plausible explanation was that she must have died from complications of a chronic medical condition with hypertension being the prime suspect. Complicated hypertension kills silently and suddenly.

Hypertension simply means abnormal elevated blood pressure. Blood pressure readings are comprised of two values: one for systolic blood pressure and the other one for diastolic blood pressure; anything equal to or above 140 over 90 is considered high. It affects approximately 1 billion people worldwide and it is commoner among blacks. Studies shows that about 30 million Nigerians are hypertensive, affecting 1 in 3 men and 1 in 4 women. Unfortunately over 30% of hypertensives are unaware. These sets of people are time bomb waiting to explode just like Mama Emeka. Kaboom! And they are gone 6 feet under the ground.

Over 90% of hypertension is idiopathic, the causes are unknown. However, there are some things that increase one’s chance of having hypertension which include advance age, black race, stress, sedentary lifestyles, alcohol consumption, smoking, consumption of fatty food and extra large people with BMI greater than 30.

High blood pressure is usually asymptomatic, but when it presents with symptoms, the symptoms are usually vague. Vague symptoms of hypertension include headache, insomnia, blurry vision and palpitations. Untreated or poorly treated hypertension leads to heart failure, heart attack, stroke, blindness, renal failure and many more.

Routine blood pressure check is important(especially for individuals with increased chances) and this can be done in the hospital. One must know his number and it is easier these days that even mushroom ‘chemists’ now render blood pressure checking service at a cheap price. A way of showing love to your old ones is to make sure they get their blood pressure checked. You might be saving a life. To those who have been diagnosed of hypertension, yet you are not on drug and not attending clinic, I feel sorry for the loved ones you’ll be living behind. Stroke might just be knocking on the door. Please retrace your steps.

Eat healthy, avoid excessive salt intake and limit alcohol consumption. Extra large ones should emulate the popular comedienne Lepacious Bose. Hit the gym with the aim of maintaining a healthy weight. Who fatness don epp except for bullies?

We must all know our numbers, mine is 110/70mmHg. What is yours?

This post is to mark the World Hypertension Day, May 17-24th, 2016.

Romance7 Fears Of My Albino Girlfriend by DonLo(op): 1:03pm On May 07, 2016
7 fears of my Albino Girlfriend

Dating an albino is one of the few unique things I've done. My friends thought I was crazy when I started the wooing game. Our love stems from her perceived uniqueness. We became the cynosure of every eye on campus. The relationship gave me the tag, "the guy dating an albino". The lover boy that I was helped me see through her struggles, fears and the challenges of being a Nigerian albino. Here are her top fears:

1. Fear of Stigmatization: Despite having a good self esteem and a thick skin for discrimination, she sometimes become sad following people's negative remarks or actions. Beyond the negative remarks some even avoid having skin contacts with her for reasons best known to them. Overtime she pays less attention to someone yelling, 'albinos don't eat salt' as she passes by.

2. She might have skin cancers: Albinos are at risk of skin cancer due to the effect of direct ultraviolet rays from the sun on their skin. This does not only predispose them to skin burn but also to skin cancer. My girlfriend never walks in the Sun without an umbrella, I'm quick to hold the umbrella as a gentle man whenever we are walking together in a scorging sun. Dating an albino saves you the cost of Brazilian hair but 'you go buy sunscreens tire'. I have to protect my lady from skin cancer, the number 1 killer of her type.

3. She might not find a job: My albino girlfriend was one of the smartest in her department yet she thinks she might never find a job. Every attempt at allaying her fears is being rebuffed with a question, 'Have you ever seen an albino working in any Nigerian bank'.

4. She might be used for Rituals:
It is a common belief that albino body parts are potent in making charms especially money rituals. Hence, they are murdered and dismembered in many African communities. My girlfriend don't go out at night neither would she travel to Tanzania even if a million dollars is at stake. Tanzania has the highest rate of ritual associated albino murder worldwide. Who no want money?

5. She might lose her sight: Albinos are not blind neither do they have terrible vision as the society have been made to believe. My albino girlfriend knows she doesn't have one of the best sights but she is overly bothered she might go blind despite her knowing this to be very unlikely.

6. She avoids her grandma like plague: My girlfriend avoids her grandma like plague. Her grandma believes she is an 'orisa', an idol sent from the gods to bless the family. The grandma never misses any opportunity to sing her eulogies at seeing her, gesticulating like one paying obeisance to a reverred god. In fact, she calls her Orisa.

7. Guilt
: She carries the guilt of her parent divorce. Her father divorced her mother over claims of infidelity. He believes his wife must have gotten pregnant for another man as there is no history of albino in his lineage.

Albinos are normal people just like us and most of the stereotypes about them holds no water. It is not a disease but a medical defect. Stop the discrimination. Instead of attributing your not ever seeing an albino obituary to them vanishing why don't you empathize with the fact that many of them die young from complications of skin cancers. Who makes obituary for a young person anyway?

So bad I didn't marry my albino girlfriend but the experience taught me a lot. Can you marry one?

HealthThe Herbal Cure For Cancer by DonLo(op): 7:42am On Mar 14, 2016
The Quest for alternative cure
On a Saturday morning, I was watching a movie in my living room when Shade came in. Shade is my cousin and best friend. We were so fond of each other and she's my first point of call if the need to share a problem arises. During my wedding, she played a dual role of the chief bride’s maid and the event planner. Ever since the event of my breast cancer diagnosis, her concern for my health has taken another turn.

On this particular Saturday she was more enthusiastic. With a brightened face she told me, 'babe, you're not dying again, I found the cure’. With disbelief I looked at her while she went on to tell me about the research she had been making and how it finally yielded a positive result. She was making enquiries both on and offline about a possible cure for cancer. Miraculously she found a tradomedical practitioner through a friend’s recommendation. She went further to tell me how the man treats diabetes and hypertension. With disbelief I questioned the possibility. But who cares, all I wanted was for my cancer to go. The diabetes I know does not have a cure but I could manage at least medically speaking. So, I concluded that if this man could cure diabetes, then he is a miracle worker.

Too good to be true

Before I could say Jack, Shade reached for her bag. She brought out a plastic bottle containing a coloured substance. The writing on the bottle was in an African native dialect. She explained the prescription and assured me that my cancer would be gone in 3 months. Just like that! It was so incredulous. As against the medical approach that bombards me with barrages of investigations before every chemo. The orthodox guys put me through all sort of investigations, some to confirm diagnosis, rule out differentials, stage disease to planning treatment. It looked like magical with bit of voodoo. ‘It is too good to be true’. This miraculous herbal therapy puzzled me, not minding the histology, receptors, immunohistochemistry, and chemo sensitivity of the cancer, yet could cure it. It sounded ridiculous; it defiles logic but I cared less. All I wanted was a cure. I was grateful to Shade and I decided to stop the Orthodox therapy for this.

With so much enthusiasm I called my husband. I could not wait to give him the gist. My husband had to shove his logical approach to issues aside, so as not to dampen my high spirit. He gave me the go ahead to use the herbal medicine if only with the promise of continuing with the orthodox treatment. God bless his wisdom if not I would have died earlier than expected.

Medicine turned poisonous
The so called herbal drug was not just ineffective but harmful. My condition started deteriorating since the onset of it usage. My doctor was puzzled and could not explain the symptoms. He was sure the chemotherapy could not account for the sudden hepatotoxicity and renal injury. He definitely knew something was wrong. 'Madam, did you use over dose of any drug or use any new drug of late'?’, he finally asked. I told him I have been using a particular herbal medicine since three months ago. He was surprised and angry that I didn't inform him before doing so. The damage had been done. “The herbal medication explains your symptoms but we might need to run some tests”, he said.

Reminiscing makes me laugh not just at my stupidity but also my desperation. I wouldn't have fallen for such a cheap scam if not for my desperation. Thank God I'm alive to tell the story. Herbal medicine can never and will never cure cancer. Please beware!

HealthCancer Is Not My Portion by DonLo(op): 11:42am On Mar 07, 2016
‘Not my portion,’ she screamed, “God forbid. How can you say such?” These are her words in response to my advice on cancer screening. Her reaction which revealed how ignorant she was couldn’t be more pitied. “People suffer for their ignorance”. Even the literates amidst us are not spared. Our aversion for preventive measures I just can’t understand. Could it be an expression of religious faith or just ignorance? There is nothing I find shocking than expressing faith over health issues yet avoiding preventive measures.

The biblical writing charges us to show our faith by our work. Faith without work is dead. A man of 65 should not exercise faith of not developing prostate cancer while neglecting the ‘work’, which is to get screened using PSA [Specific Prostate Antigen]. At certain ages in men, the prostate starts enlarging and this you can’t pray away, for it is a normal physiology. But weather the enlargement is benign or cancerous, it is left to screening.

May be it is not your portion after all. You are righteous and not a sinner. The popular Nigerian pastor’s wife who died of cancer had probably committed a big sin and must be punished by God. When are we to stop this self-deceit? God is not cruel. Some things are science. Some sets of people would have cancer but to whom and when it happens might be out of our reach. Our actions can prevent or stop the negative effect on us. Anyone who refuses to pay attention to his/her health will suffer ill health. Our religion should teach us to be wise and not otherwise.

We use Paracetamol for that headache but we are quick to wish that breast lump away. For all I know, that breast lump could be cancer. Consequently, if necessary steps are not taken earlier enough it might eventually be a death sentence. Cancer is real and it is here to stay courtesy of our changed lifestyles. We have probably heard of more cancer related deaths in recent times which I’m sure you can fix the names. It is not exclusive to affluent only that theirs gets the attention of the media. In fact, it is commoner amidst people of low socio economic class. Over 70% of cancer deaths could have been averted through screening and early hospital presentation.

Cancer is commoner than we think. Save yourself from a story that touches. Get screened today.
Cancers of the Prostate, Breast, Cervix and Colon all have individual screening tests with high index of suspicion.

HealthMy 10 Years Old Daughter Is No Longer A Virgin by DonLo(op): 11:58am On Feb 22, 2016
I got the shock of my life 4 days ago. Last Saturday, I met a childhood friend Shola, who also doubles as my family doctor. We had an extensive discussion, reminiscing over our childhood days. We talked about many things, our secondary school adventures, old class mates, and so on. Our discussion turned sour when he told me about his secondary school crush, Bimpe, who recently died of cervical cancer. May her gentle soul rest in peace I muttered.

He further went on to tell me about cervical cancer, a cancer peculiar to females. The cause of cervical cancer is Human Papilloma Virus and how it is transmitted via sex. I had thought condom use protects against all forms of sexually transmitted infections but I was wrong, Human papilloma virus is an exception. This virus also causes genital warts in some cases, he said. He explained the deficiency in our country, that in saner climes, the vaccine is given to school age children especially between the ages 10 and12. Gardasil, the vaccine is more effective in this age group because most are yet to be sexually active. I told him my daughter who is presently age 10 will benefit from this. We agreed I bring her for the vaccine next weekend.

During dinner that day, I decided to raise the discussion. I told my daughter about the cervical cancer vaccine and its benefits on her health. I had wanted to be sure she was still a virgin so I played a fast one on her. I told her being a virgin is a pre-requisite for this vaccine, though this is an erroneous belief by many. That night I got the shocker of my life. I saw the changed reaction on my daughters face. ‘So you are not a virgin!’ I screamed. Immediately, I lost the appetite for food. A bad news it was. I wished it was a joke. At ten!

She confided in her mother that she got deflowered a year ago. I felt like a failed father, I had no clue all along. Where I’ve missed it? This world has turned something else.Get your daughters vaccinated against cervical cancer today.

Of all the female cancers, cervical cancer is the only one that offers great potentials for prevention. It takes about 15 to 20 years to develop from precancerous state to cancer.
Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women in developing countries. It is the second most common cancer in women worldwide after cancer of the breast with 85% of deaths occurring in developing countries.
W.H.O recommends screening of at least once in a life time for women in developing world.
Screening test involves Pap smear, visual inspection and HPV testing.

Would you blame the father or the society for the loss of his daughter virginity?

D'banj and Olamide(most talented and versatile) aside ASA are the two Nigerian artist I respect the most. Despite D'banj music career not being on the high side of late, the guy is a fighter. Always working hard to stay relevant and his recent emergency song is an attestation. D'banj is very matured, no wonder he is widely respected and even when Olamide stole concept from his song to produce a better version, his response was epic.
Don Janzy is a successful producer no doubt but he's got more enemy than he can imagine. I pray he stays relevant for long with this attitude. I grew up watching prime time jamz every Saturday by Keke, D1 and ID. Who would have thought Kennis music and those guys can go into oblivion.
