My name is Adesegun Fatusi, and I am the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, OAU, Ile-Ife. The case of the Aror Oghenerukewve has just been brought to my notice. To throw more light on her case, I will present the detaild fact here. With a score of 320, her mark from UTME amounts to 80% (i.e. 320/400 x 100) Her school cert results are: English A1 (=8 marks); Biology C4 (=5 marks); Chemistry B3 (=6 marks); Maths B3 (=6 marks); Physics C4 (=5 marks); Physics C4 (=5 marks); Further Maths B2 (=7marks), and Civic Educ A1 (=8 marks). That gives her 45 points, or 70.3% (i.e. 44/64x100) So her overall average - as OAU did a combination of 50% mark from JAMB and 50% mark from School Cert - is: (80+70.3)=75.15% (which we rounded up to 75.2%). With that mark, she ranks number 103 on the list of the students who took Medicine as first Choice. The total admission quota for Medicine in OAU is 100, and that includes UTME and Direct Entry). Clearly although Aror did well, her mark was NOT good enough to earn her admission on merit to read Medicine in Ife. Her mark of 75.2% is clearly below our cut-off mark (which was initially 78%, but we later reduced to 77.7%). Between her mark of 75.2% and 77.7%, by the way, there were 56 other candidates who scored higher than her but did not make the cut-off. For example, two people had 77.6%, two other people had 77.5%, four people had 77.4% etc Having presented the detailed facts about Aror's case, let me also help the many young Nigerians who may be accessing this site with more information on admission as I see a lot of misrepresentation, falsehood, and misunderstanding from the comments that various people had made on this case. 1. Admission into Nigerian Universities are considered on three grounds based on the nationally specified criteria (which I think ought to be reviewed now, by the way): A. Merit =45% (This covers all candidates from the country - and it is automatic admission once you meet the cut-off mark) B. Catchment = 35% (this refers to those in the states specified as catchment area for each University: For OAU, that is Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Osun and Ekiti) C. Educationally disadvantaged states (ELDS)=20% = This refers to all the 19 Northern States, and Ebonyi, Rivers and Bayelsa. So, someone from Delta such as Aror with 75.2% will not get admission into Medicine in OAU automatically as she is only considered on merit criterion and she does NOT meet the specified cut-off, but someone with the same mark from Kwara (which is in the North Central zone) may get automatic admission with the same mark based on the consideration of ELDS if 75.2% is the specified cut-off for ELDS for Medicine. 2. When a candidate chooses a highly competitive course like Medicine in a top-rated University like OAU, the competition is very intense. Believe it or not, many of the candidates that made our merit mark had an average of six A1s in school cert coupled with very high UTME mark (above 300). So, a candidate must carefully think over his choice of course and university. For example, if Aror had chosen ANY other course as her first choice for OAU, whe would have made the merit mark and gotten automatic admission, and she would have made the merit mark for Medicine on merit for most Nigerian universities too (but NOT OAU unfortunately). 3. Because of the high demand and competition for very limited spaces, the College of Health Sciences does not consider second choices as a general rule. OAU, for example, was only able to offer admission on UTME platform (Merit + Catchment + ELDS) to less than 3% of her applicants for Medicine, and less than 2% of her applicants for Nursing Science this year. 4. For cases like Aror where the candidadte has made a high mark but does not make the cut-off, what the candidate can sometimes do is to come to the University and try and see if he or she can be considered for other courses. A candidadte DOES NOT get considered automatically for a course she has not applied to in JAMB. A candidadte is ONLY automatically considered for the course he or she has applied for with respect to a particular university. Unfortunately, Aror has left her case too late as all admission lists have been submitted for this year. Funny enough the provost of Health Sciences has a nairaland account. He is a nairalander. Be careful who you bash ![]() Lalasticlala, Mynd44, Seun, Fynestboi

Some Nigerians like talking with sentiments.. You think Medicine in a top rated school like OAU comes easily as you think. She scored high but there must have been some other person with higher scores more deserving of the admission. Instead of attacking the provost who took his time to explain please advocate for the return of post utme and the stop of all this catchment areas come educational disadvantaged areas. If there had been post UTME others that deserves it less would have been sieved out. God bless the Provost. He was really willing to help when I called is attention to it yesterday. But it was just too late. |
CadetFrancis:Na you go be him campaign manager |
SirAweezy:I'm talking of admission into Medicine. Merit is close to 90% my there. Ask well. |
Na so |
I wonder too o |
Ibori, an ex-convict who should never open his mouth to alter a word due to shame. Someone that should be arrested from the Airport to come serve his time in Nigeria. But no this is Nigeria, he'll be back to start forming God father. Very soon he'll want to start forming a regional leader in south south. One wonders, who will follow an ex convict. |
For him mind |
Na by force |

There must have been a mix up somewhere. I know OAU for one thing and that is the reasonable perceived fairness in admission process into Medicine. Never trust others applying to study medicine as they might have had a better result but it seems unlikely seeing her O level results too. But at least she should have been given another course. I'll try calling Prof Fatusi, the provost attention to it if possible. Lala please move this to front page let OAU come explain, save someone's destiny. MODIFIED: On a second look at her result, it shows her O Level result is weak when you look at the subjects that matters in the 5 credit requirement. Schools now use point system. Her Biology, Chemistry and Physics are weak and considering that Jamb and O level carries 50%. A candidates with 270 and A1(s) in these subjects would have counteracted her jamb result. But let the school clarify so as to clear our already biased mind of them cheating her.

OAUTemitayo:Don't mind him. He thought he was 'doing' Tinubu then but now him eye don dey clear. Those that gave him that advice then thought they are trying to curb Tinubu's influence unknown to them that elders see what the young won't see despite an intense look. Greatest Ife |
El-rufia is a proud midget who has turn a relatively peaceful state to something else. He lacks wisdom and this is evident in the way he handles issues and also the incessant attacks on his hitherto political benefactors all in the name of politics. He should enjoy it while its last, he should know that Kaduna is not Abuja hence the need to apply wisdom in his so called transformational policies. So no young lady among them mtchewww ![]() |
US likes forming big brothers that ends up worsening situation. Look at Libya too. Democracy na by force? It's high time they realise that they can't dictate for every country especially the developing ones on what type of government to practice so long it gives the country stability. Their forming the world police is not yielding too good enough result. |
Confusion everywhere. This further goes to show that almost all Nigerians have corrupt tendencies irrespective of the positions they occupy. Who would have expected that Magu who initially appeared saintly will be able to afford 20million naira per year accommodation. The allegations against him were not denied rather he gave explanation to them and that my 3 year old nephew does when caught in the middle of a bad act. Having said that, it's good to state that his rejection by the Senate has been politicised. Some people are afraid of his nomination and seemingly uncompromising stance this which he accentuated with his initial gragra. Who would have thought that Buhari will one day be famzing Saraki. When Tinubu and Co wanted to influence the Senate for Buhari preferred candidate, Lasun, he was busy forming a true democrat, that he won't want to interfere. Now the Senates are dealing with him big time with the budget, loan and this. Anyway, the inability of the presidency to control the Senate has against OBJ tenure is good for our democracy. Sai thieving Saraki ![]() |
Another fight loading. |
This is what happens when we don't play politics of hate. We all have comparative advantage that if well harnessed through collaboration it will both benefit both party. Tinubu is a godfather but if him being a godfather has given Lagos good administrators and has prevented Lagos from being govern by the typical Nigerian politician I will want him to continue to his grave. It seems Buhari is only Tinubu's bad market till date. While at this some unscrupulous elements are strategising on how to divert it to their shops yet we say the country is bad. |

dokyOloye:Dokita, that your centre is a death zone o. TSA has done more harm than good to hospital. |
MrMcJay:You have point though. Almost all of them are clowns. But I don't see why Aregbe should make his people suffer because he must build the so called Cargo Airport. |
Should doctor go on strike? Most of us will say no but if you've been to most public hospital and see for yourself the extent of neglect then you'll know we're in for a long thing. If occasional strike can help correct something's maybe we need it after all. The man at the helm of affair is a dullard who after budgeting billions of naira for Aso rock clinic (more than the budgetary allocation for all government own teaching hospital) would still travel to UK for ear infection and also have Kyari travel out to treat cold. Since I was born I have never seen an hypocrite like Buhari. If Buhari knows the number of people that will suffer for this strike he will make sure they don't go on strike but what do I know. He is more concern for his cows than Nigerians. Let me advice you young doctors, write PLAB or USMLE and leave Nigeria when you still can. When you all leave, the government eyes go clear. Nigeria is a time bomb with a teke teke movement already in it last seconds, waiting to explode. |
Atiku2019:Then the passion should be rewarded Bro. Don't worry I will personally call Atiku's attention to it. ![]() |
Okay |
That's a responsible government that understands the pain of the citizen unlike some state governor like Aregbe who delights in owning civil servant. He doesn't understand the balance between infrastructural development and payment of salary. Anyway Aregbe is just like his boss, Buhari who would rather plunge us into debt so as to get money for his so called project which is only aimed at campaigning for 2019. Thank God the pensioners didn't get the money earlier if not their dependents would have convinced them to invest in MMM Ride on Ambode. Itesiwaju eko. But on the lighter note, Atiku2019 know dey sleep. Either you're driven by passion or remuneration, your work deserves commendation ![]() |

I sometimes think Dangote is more powerful than the Nigeria's president. Somebody that controls your stock exchange and soon enough forex of his own through the soon to be completed refinery. As a Nigerian you can do without Buhari but more difficult to do without Dangote except you no dey use sugar or build house with cement. |
