Noiva do Cordeiro is home to more than 600 women, most of them under 35 Some are already married but their husbands must live and work elsewhere But that means there is a shortage of eligible suitors to woo young women It's like the opening gambit of a bad Hollywood romance. A Brazilian town populated only by women has made an appeal for eligible bachelors. More than 600 women live in the town of Noiva do Cordeiro, south-east Brazil. And most of them are aged between 20 and 35 years old. Now they have extended an invitation to potential suitors. But don't start packing your bags just yet - any men who go have to understand that this corner of the Brazilian countryside is very much a woman's world. Some of Noiva de Cordeiro's women are already married and have families, but their husbands - and any sons over 18 - are made to work away from home and only allowed to return at the weekends. It means girl power rules in the rural community, with women in charge of every aspect of life - from farming to town planning and even religion. And residents say their town is that much the better for it. 'There are lots of things that women do better than men. Our town is prettier, more organised, and far more harmonious than if men were in charge,' said Rosalee Fernandes, 49. 'When problems or disputes arise, we resolve them in a woman's way, trying to find consensus rather than conflict. 'We share everything, even the land we work on. Nobody competes with anyone here. It's all for one, and one for all. 'The whole town came together recently to help buy a huge widescreen TV for our community centre so we can all watch soap operas together. 'And there's always time to stop and gossip, try on each other's clothes and do each other's hair and nails.' 'There's always time to stop and gossip': The town's residents say life there is much better without men But while none of the residents of Noiva do Cordeiro would have it any other way, it has left them with just one problem. Nelma Fernandes, 23, admits it's impossible for her neighbours - renowned in the region as strikingly beautiful - to find a would-be spouse. 'Here, the only men we single girls meet are either married or related to us, everyone is a cousin. I haven't kissed a man for a long time,' she said. 'We all dream of falling in love and getting married. But we like living here and don't want to have to leave the town to find a husband.' 'We all dream of falling in love': However their rules have made it difficult for single women to find husbands 'But men need to live according to our rules': And the women of Noiva do Cordeiro aren't interested in leaving The lack of eligible batchelors has now led the community's many single young ladies for make an appeal for interested men - but only those willing to adapt to living in a women's world. Ms Fernandes said: 'We'd like to get to know men who would leave their own lives and come to be a part of ours. 'But first they need to agree to do what we say and live according to our rules.' Noiva do Cordeiro was born in the hills near Belo Vale, in Minas Gerais state, after founder Maria Senhorinha de Lima was branded an adulterer after leaving a man she had been forced to marry. She was chased out of town in 1891 after the Catholic church excommunicated her and the next five generations of her family when she shacked up with another suitor. Shunned by the local population, she and other women who subsequently went to live with them were vilified as loose women and prostitutes, causing them to isolate themselves from the outside world. In 1940, an evangelical pastor, Anisio Pereira, took one of the women, aged 16, to be his wife and founded a church in the growing community. However, he proceeded to impose strict puritanical rules, banning them from drinking alcohol, listening to music, cutting their hair or using any type of contraceptive. When Anisio died in 1995, the women decided never again to let a man dictate how they should live. And one of the first things they did was to dismantle the male-biased organised religion he had set up. Rosalee Fernandes said: 'We have God in our hearts. But we don't think we need to go to church, get married in front of a priest or baptise our children. These are rules made up by men.' I was in Jeppe street, Johannesburg hanging out with my Ghanaian friends in their restaurant. I felt a movement under my feet i asked a lady beside me that whats happening? she didn't understand, after a few min, the whole building shook and everybody ran out of the mall including my friend selling the food and the SA customers with us. They abandoned their food and ran to the road side thinking the building wanna collapse. But we were wrong, it was an earth quake so many kilometers away from where we are. I was scared and also laughing cos it was a different experience. The tremors were felt in various parts of the country, shaking buildings, rattling windows and resulting in building evacuations. The US Geological Survey said on its website "Earthquake report.com" the quake was felt as far off as Botswana. "This earthquake is severely dangerous because the epicentre is located right below Orkney and Klerksdorp," it said. It reported that severe shaking was felt in Klerksdorp and there was an unconfirmed report of a building that had collapsed, where people were trapped. Another report on the website said a school building in Klerksdorp shook so badly that pupils were thrown off balance. "Our school has three storeys and I was in the middle when it shook. We dove for the door along with our geography teacher and we were told to evacuate the building," said a pupil on the website. "We are on the football field, damage [was] done to multiple classrooms." Another person on the website reported that two children were injured at an Orkney mine, and that buildings were damaged. The Council for Geosciences could not immediately be reached for comment. The quake struck after midday on Tuesday, shaking buildings and rattling pictures in offices, including Sapa's headquarters in Greenside, Johannesburg. People immediately took to social media to report it. "Who else just felt the earthquake. That was a crazy... tremor," said Johannesburg resident Adrian Patrick on Facebook. "Here in Durban too," responded Byron David. Citizens from Johannesburg to KwaZulu-Natal, North West, and Cape Town reported feeling the quake. Sapa's reporter in Durban said people in the 32-storey Durban Bay House, one of the tallest buildings in the city, were evacuated. Hundreds of people were milling around Anton Lembede Street where the building is located in the city centre. "I felt it. I thought I was going mad. I stood up and saw my colleagues rushing out," said Lungelo Xaba, who works on 17th floor of the building. Johannesburg emergency services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said the tremor was felt in most parts of the city. "The city has not received any reports of injuries, or collapsed building. However we will be monitoring the situation." http://www.timeslive.co.za/local/2014/08/05/5.3-earthquake-shakes-south-africa-one-dead |

An unidentified military man, Monday morning beat a bus conductor (names unknown) to death at Obalende in Lagos. A report monitored on Metro FM by DailyPost, says the man who was dressed in a Nigeria Army uniform, pounced on the deceased following a heated argument over transport fare. Eyewitnesses say the man had accompanied his wife to the park at Obalende to get a bus to her destination. Within a moment, the late conductor and the woman, exchanged hot words over transport fare. “That made the unformed man to react. He lost his temper and kept beating the guy, until he died,” one account said. He was said to have dragged the deceased, raining blows on his head, stomach and chest. On noticing he had given up the ghost, the officer pulled off his uniform and ran towards some uniformed men who were around the scene in a vehicle. They reportedly sped off, leaving the lifeless body at the park. The incident, which caused pandemonium, almost escalated into a protest by other transporters but for the intervention of a team of anti-riot police that quickly arrived the area to calm the situation. DailyPost gathered that the driver of the bus, alongside sympathizers, drove his late colleague to Dodan Barracks to report the matter. Source: Daily Post (http://dailypost.com.ng) |

Three members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly on Tuesday announced their defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Change (APC). The members are Alhaji Mani Masamar-Mudi, representing Bukkuyum North Constituency; Alhaji Lawali Dogon-Kade of kaura Namoda South Constituency and Alhaji Umar Muazu, representing Maradun 2 constituency. The lawmakers, who announced their defection at a sitting of the house in Gusau, said they had concluded arrangements to change their political lineage. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the number of APC members in the assembly has now increased from 13 to 16, while that of the PDP has reduced from 11 to 8 in the house, which has 24 members. Alhaji Mani Masamar-Mudi, who spoke on behalf of the defectors, said their action was in line with provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which allows party members to change their political party at any time if they so desire. “We, as representatives of our people, have to follow the party that our people want,” he said, adding “we took the decision because we believe that the PDP is heading towards self-destruction”. The Speaker of Zamfara Assembly, Alhaji Sunusi Rikiji, said the house had accepted the defection of the members because “it is in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended’’. The Majority Leader of the House, Alhaji Salisu Tsafe, described the defection as “a new and welcome development’’ in the activities of the house, saying that it would increase the level of unity and understanding among the lawmakers. Tsafe also said that they were in consultations with the remaining eight members of the PDP in the assembly, and “we are hoping for a positive response from them’’. (NAN) |

I dont think it was political undertone. It was just the fans and not the youth per-se. |
Self-acclaimed Akpako Master, Oche Gabriel Amanyi, otherwise known as Terry G got more than he bargained for in his hometown during the weekend. The singer, who was at the IBB Square, Makurdi in Benue State for Benue youth fiesta was attacked while performing on stage. The Benue fiesta, which attracted hundreds of youths, including men and women, was organized by the member representing Guma/Makurdi federal constituency, Barrister Emmanuel Jime, who is known to be nursing gubernatorial ambition in 2015. It was learnt that while the ‘son of the soil’ mounted the stage to perform, some youths, suspected to be hoodlums, began to throw sachet water on the musician and later broke bottles and charged towards him. No reason was given for their action. The security men on ground eventually brought the situation under control. Prominent Nigerian artistes including J. Martins, I Go Dye, Ice Prince and Pastor Nicodemus Mbatsavtampu performed at the event, which was lively, before it was interrupted. PS... do you think Terry G is losing it ![]() |
