OnankpaBa:my guy this is another injustice in Nigerian judiciary system. I don't understand this country called Nigeria and that might be the reason why some ethinc group wants to pull out from it. How on earth will a right thinking judge sentence a thief that stole that amount of money to death by hanging and sentence another person that stole 2.2 billion niara 74 days in prison with an option of paying 3 million naira fine. A shameless country. |

An Ado-Ekiti High Court, yesterday, sentenced one David Olugboyega to death by hanging for armed robbery involving N14,570. Justice John Adeyeye passed the judgment following the confessional statement of the convict and the conclusion of trial by the prosecution. “An accused may be convicted on his own confession alone as long as the court was satisfied. Based on the confessional statement of the accused, the court found him guilty as charged. Besides, the prosecution has also proved his case beyond reasonable doubt by providing seven witnesses. “The accused is hereby sentenced to death by hanging. This will serve as deterrent to others in the society. May God have mercy on your soul,” he said. During trial, the prosecutor, Mr Alaba Adeyemi, told the court that the convict committed the offence on March 20, 2003 at Araromi Street, Ikere -Ekiti. He said the convict, armed with dangerous weapons including gun and cutlass, robbed three people of N14,570. Specifically, Adeyemi said the convict robbed Kola Owolabi of N8,000; Beatrice Olawumi, N5,000 and Idowu Abiodun, N1,570. The prosecution called seven witnesses to prove the case. The convict, who made confessional statement at the police station, opted to defend himself without a lawyer. He pleaded guilty to the charge and also confessed to have been involved in series of robberies. The convict confessed to have joined a gang when he was in a prison. By Samuel Oyadongha, Yenagoa Tension heightened Thursday among among members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the killing of Diseye Dickson, the deputy ward chairman of APC, Ward 1 in Odi, Kolokuma-Opokuma council area of then state by unidentified gunmen. The deceased, Diseye Dickson was reportedly shot dead at Odi community at about 11pm Wednesday by the gunmen allegedly clad in military uniform. Though report claimed that the deceased was shot dead during a shoot out between policemen and the gunmen, about eight in number, in a failed kidnap attempt of Chief Watson Ogoriba, a businessman and elder brother of the former member of the Federal House of Representatives and chieftain of the APC, Hon. Warman Ogoriba. A community source said, “It was the case of failed kidnap attempt. It is not about PDP or the APC. When the kidnappers arrived the community, the vigilante people alerted the Police in Kaiama Divisional Command and they engaged the suspected kidnappers in a shoot-out. The victim may have been caught in a cross fire.” The source further revealed that aside from the deceased Dieseye Dickson, a Woman was also injured in the buttocks by a stray bullet. A member of the Federal House of Representative representing Yenagoa-Kolokuma/Opokuma federal constituency, Hon. Douye Diri, who confirmed the incident, said it was a case of foiled kidnap attempt and not a party conflict. But the leadership of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the state through the Sylva/Igiri campaign Organisation alleged that the killing was carried out by suspected thugs hired by the PDP. The Director of Media and Publicity of the Sylva/Igiri campaign Organisation, Chief Nathan Egba, in a statement said, “As at this morning, the corpse of Mr. Dickson, was still lying in a pool of his own blood where he was killed. Do note that this is the second killing being carried out by the PDP since the campaigns started. “Recall that Mr. Andrew June, a ward chairman of our party in Ekeremor LGA was macheted to death. We condemned this act of desperation by the PDP to continually attack and intimidate our supporters.” “This killing is wicked, unwarranted and provocative. The APC and the campaign organization has repeatedly called on the police and other security agencies to step up their patrol to forestall any further attack on the APC members. Killers of these people must not be allowed to go unpunished.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/12/gunmen-shot-dead-apc-deputy-ward-chair-in-bayelsa/ |

He said that the defendant assaulted the complainant by dragging her by her trouser, carried her to his room, forcefully tore her zip after struggling with her and pushed her to the bed and had sex with her without her consent. Shooting was heard Wednesday afternoon at the Lagos home of former Director General of the Department of State Services, DSS, Lateef Kayode Are. He is currently under house arrest by the EFCC as the anti-corruption agency continues probe into the arms procurement scandal. It is unclear what brought about the gunfire, but sources who passed the scene in Bourdillon road, Ikoyi, confirmed to DAILY POST that they heard gunshots. Are is a retired Nigerian Army Colonel, served as an officer in the Directorate of Military Intelligence up until retirement by General Sani Abacha. Are was appointed as DSS boss by President Olusegun Obasanjo. He served in that position throughout President Obasanjo’s two terms (1999-2007), and was replaced by Afakiriya Gadzama, who was appointed in August 2007 by President Umaru Yar’Adua. http://dailypost.ng/2015/12/02/breaking-armsgate-efcc-puts-ex-dss-boss-kayode-are-under-house-arrest/

Mike Ozekhome, the lawyer to Raymond Dokpesi, founder of Daar Communications, Raymond Dokpesi, has said he was not aware his client received money from the office of the former National Security Adviser, NSA, Sambo Dasuki. Mr. Ozekhome also said reports that Mr. Dokpesi was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ,EFCC, over the alleged payment, were not correct because Mr. Dokpesi went on his own to the anti-graft agency after receiving a call from its chairman. “I am not aware the chief collected any money,” he said, referring to Mr. Dokpesi. A source at the EFCC had told PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Dokpesi was interrogated by investigators because he received N2.1 billion from the NSA’s office on the eve of the 2015 general election. The EFCC said it suspected the money was payment for documentaries and advertisements by Daar communications during the electioneering campaign. “The chief called me earlier in the afternoon to say he received a call from the chairman of the EFCC wanting to see him and I sent one of my lawyers to accompany him. He was not arrested by any group of operatives,” he said. Mr. Ozekhome said prior to Tuesday’s invitation of Mr. Dokpesi, there was no formal communication from the EFCC to him. “What I know is that the EFCC wrote to Daar Holdings asking for a list of directors and whether it has done any business or contract with the office of the NSA in the past and how much was involved. “We wrote them a reply to say Daar did not do any contract with the office of the NSA and we are ready to give them all the information they need,” he said. The EFCC has arrested a number of individuals indicted by a presidential investigations committee into arms procurement by the Goodluck Jonathan administration. The committee had in its interim report said that it found extra-budgetary spending by the Jonathan administration to the tune of N643.8 billion and an additional $2.2 billion in foreign currency component. A competent source at the EFCC had earlier told us that Mr. Dasuki had received N2.1 billion from the money. “Chief Dokpesi received N2.1 billion from the NSA’s office but investigators cannot see any clear reason for the payment,” he said. The source said investigators were “suspicious that the money was passed to him as payment for the damaging documentaries and campaigns his station ran on Buhari, Tinubu and Amaechi”. President Muhammad Buhari, Ahmed Tinubu and Chibuike Amaechi are leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress. At the time the money was allegedly paid, Mr. Buhari was the party’s presidential candidate. “They believe the funds were budgeted for arms procurement but was diverted to Mr. Dokpesi,” the source said.
