Once upon a time, Majek Fashek was Nigeria’s greatest musician. He is reggae extraordinaire with an epic all-time hit song entitled: Send Down The Rain. Whenever Majek Fashek (whose full name is Majekodunmi Fasheke) raised his voice in a melodious refrain of “Send Down the Rain”, there was literally an extraordinary downpour. And by that, he lyrically put an end to an almost two-year drought (famine) in northern Nigeria. At 20, he was a kid sensation. At 40, a reggae god. At 55, a troubled star. The Nigerian reggae icon no doubt believes that he would still bounce back into limelight despite his deplorable state. The principal prophet of reggae whose pathetic-looking picture spread like wildfire on the internet recently claims that he still remains the heir apparent to Bob Marley. Fasheke, who is gradually fizzling out because of hard drugs spoke about rehab and his use of local medicine in a recent interview with Encomium Weekly. According to him, “I’m scared of rehab. Let me tell you what I did to escape the rehab. God gave me different knowledge of orisha, babalawo knowledge. My ancestral knowledge, which is what I’m using right now. I drink akpeteshie. It’s the orisha idea I got” he further said. Pastor Wole Oladiyun of CLAM had invited the singer for a month long of deliverance but he reportedly escaped because he does not want to be depressed. “I don’t want to get depressed. Jesus is my Hero, my Lord and Saviour. He is the one that has seen me through up to this level. I told them to wait until I have released my record. I no wan enter hospital now, before somebody go inject me with bad injection,” stated Fasheke. The singer, who is separated from his wife says the Celestial Church of Christ came in between her. “It was the Celestial Church that confused her. They gave her wrong vision about me. The celestial church can’t try me any day, any time. I will attack them. I will burn them. I am equipped spiritually.” Many well-meaning Nigerians have cried over the deteriorating state of the reggae artistes, seeking public assistance on how to revive him. Recently, the eccentric Charlyboy, also known as Area Fada called for intervention. Speaking with newsmen, the singer said that Majek Fashek, was an iconic artiste who should not be left to die in his present condition. According to him, “The worst thing we can do is stand and watch when we see someone struggling in agony, especially when their pain is self-inflicted. “It is no longer news that the rain maker is a sorry shadow of himself plagued by issues larger than his self-discipline. “Majek Fashek is our own; let’s see how we can heal our rain maker who needs all the love and understanding he can get right now.” http://dailypost.ng/2015/07/15/god-gave-me-knowledge-of-babalawo-that-is-why-i-drink-akpeteshie-troubled-reggae-star-majek-fasheke/

Lagos lawyer Femi Falana has urged former Minister of Finance Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to apologise to Nigerians for admitting that the withdrawal of $2 billion from the Excess Crude Account (ECA) was authorised by President Jonathan and not the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC). He advised Dr. Okonjo-Iweala to stop denying her role in the mismanagement of the nation’s economy. Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole had alleged that the ex-minister of Finance unilaterally approved the withdrawal of the $2 billion from the Excess Crude Account (ECA) “without authorisation”. But in her reaction, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala claimed that it was “false, malicious and totally without foundation,” asserting that the withdrawal of the fund was “approved” by FAAC. Following denial of her claim by the FAAC , Mrs Okonjo-Iweala recanted. Falana noted that in denying the mismanagement of the economy, the former coordinating minister of the Economy said the “payments made were used in paying for petroleum subsidies and were approved by Mr. President”. The Lagos lawyer said: “Assuming without conceding that the release of the $2 billion was approved by the President, is Mrs Okonjo-Iweala saying funds belonging to the three tiers of government could be unilaterally withdrawn from the ECA by the Federal Government? As the coordinating minister of the Economy, did she draw the attention of President Jonathan to the illegality of withdrawing funds from the ECA without approval of the states and the local governments, the co-owners of the fund?” Falana said despite the alleged payment of $2 billion for fuel subsidy in December 2014, fuel marketers have continued their strike over alleged unpaid N200 billion by the Ministry of Finance under Mrs Okonjo-Iweala’s watch. He said: “In spite of the alleged payment of $2 billion for fuel subsidy in December 2014, fuel marketers have continued to embark on strike over the alleged non-payment of N200 billion by the Ministry of Finance under Mrs Okonjo-Iweala’s watch. The claims and counter-claims by the former minister and fuel marketers call for investigation of the mismanagement of the fuel subsidy regime by the Buhari administration with a view to exposing the monumental fraud that has characterised the policy. “In 2011, the National Assembly appropriated N245 billion for fuel subsidy. Without any amendment of the Appropriation Act, 2011, by way of supplementary budget, Mrs Okonjo-Iweala unilaterally paid N2.5 trillion to fuel marketers. Investigations by the House of Representatives and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have confirmed that the bulk of the fund was paid to members of a cabal, who did not supply any fuel. Was it the FAAC or President Jonathan that authorised the World Bank expert to engage in the fraudulent payment of over N2 trillion to fake fuel importers? “Having admitted that the withdrawal of the $2 billion by her was authorised by President Jonathan and not by FAAC as she had previously claimed, Mrs Okonjo-Iweala ought to apologise to Nigerians. And instead of resorting to shifting blame in the circumstance, the former minister should stop denying her principal role in the gross mismanagement of the neo-colonial economy of the country.” http://thenationonlineng.net/new/falana-to-okonjo-iweala-apologise-for-illegal-eca-withdrawal/

Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) have arrested a man, who allegedly paraded himself as the son of the Nigerian president in order to defraud his unsuspecting victims. A source at the FCT SARS told our reporter that the suspect continuously promised to secure contracts for his victims from the president, saying he had made billions of naira through this illicit venture. City News gathered that the suspect had enriched himself using names of big politicians and businessmen to defraud his victims. “He mostly approached big contractors, who were desperate to see the president or any of the governors. He would put fake calls across to the supposed politicians in the presence of his victims and convince them to book appointments. From there, he would demand that the politician’s security officials needed to be settled with huge amounts of money before the contractor would be granted audience with the president or the governor,” the source said. Trouble started for the fake president’s son when one of his victims, a contractor, repeatedly took his case to SARS, complaining that after collecting lots of money from him, he was not taken to the politician. It was gathered that the suspect has been on the wanted list of the FCT Special Anti-Robbery Squad. City news also gathered that he had superimposed pictures with the president, an action that made his story believable. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, FCT command, Anjuguri Manzah, confirmed that acting on a tipoff, SARS operatives arrested the suspect last Saturday at about 2 a.m. “The truth is that the suspect had defrauded so many people. To perfect his act, he paraded himself as the son of the president. Three Mercedez Benz and one Peugeot 406 cars were recovered from him as exhibits,” he said, adding that investigations are ongoing. http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/daily/index.php/city-news/59418-fake-president-s-son-nabbed-in-abuja |
