A syndicate of international fraudsters who specialise in the production of fake Nigeria currencies and circulating them within and around Borno state was recently arrested by the police in Maiduguri, the state capital. According to one of the arrested fake currency kingpins in Borno, Adam Ajid, the counterfeits were produced in Cameroon and smuggled into Nigeria. The suspect said a bundle of 100 notes of fake N1000 costs N11000 while he sells them to fraudsters at the cost of N16000. Borno state police commissioner, Aderemi Opadokun, said the suspect and other fraudsters arrested at different occasions were nabbed after tip-off from informants. “Borno state police has recently embarked on proactive measures of anti-crime patrol and intelligence gathering that paid off with the arrest of a notorious fake currency dealer in the person of one Adam Ajid who lives here in Fulatari Ward, Maiduguri, who is known for defrauding members of the public with fake currency. Mr. Opadokun said the arrested fraudster was found with N4.5 million worth of fake currency all in crispy N1000 notes. “Following a tip off, our Special Anti Robbery Squad, personnel arrested the suspect on 14/07/2015 with bundles of one thousand naira notes in three different serial numbers to the tune of N4, 515, 000.00k strongly suspected to be fake,” said the Borno CP. Mr. Opadokun said the suspect’s supplier, who is alleged to be from Cameroun Republic, is being trailed. Mr. Ajid said he became an agent for his suppliers after becoming bankrupt in his business due to the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency. “I am an electronic merchant, buying wholesales from Alaba market and selling in Cameroon,” said the suspect. “It was when my business went down that I decided to join the business of fake money sales. I was introduced into it by one Mallam Abdullahi who is a Cameroonian that I knew during my business trips to Cameroon. And since after then, he used to sell a bundle of N1000 note to me at the rate of N11,000 and I sell them to known fraudsters at the rate of N16,000″ http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/187121-how-we-smuggle-circulate-fake-nigerian-currencies-%e2%80%8eprinted-in-cameroon.html

Residents of Zuma Rock community, near Maddalla town of Niger State, were recently thrown into mourning when a five-year-old girl fell and died inside a well in the area. A resident of the community, Danjuma Bala, who disclosed this to our reporter, said the incident happened about 2:12p.m. when the deceased followed her mother to fetch water from the well. He said after the mother had finished fetching water, she left the little girl behind, but before she could return, the five-year-old took the drawing bowl, and in an attempt to fetch water from the well, she slipped and fell inside. Bala said the deceased’s mother raised the alarm which attracted the attention of some neighbours when she returned but could not find the drawing container and her child. City News gathered that the father of the deceased, who was at his farm when the incident happened, later rushed back and mobilised local well diggers at Madalla to remove the corpse of the girl for burial. http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/daily/index.php/city-news/60638-five-year-old-girl-dies-inside-well |

Tragedy struck in a Zimbabwean village after a pastor, Shamiso Kanyama, died after he was allegedly buried alive on his instructions. According to reports, Kanyama had asked his followers, five members of the same family, to bury him alive so that he could summon more cleansing powers to help cleanse their house of evil spirits. As the story goes, the members of the family, charged with the murder of the prophet, invited the pastor to their home in the village of Mazonde to help cleanse their home, believed to be plagued by mysterious deaths. The accused family members, identified as Leanmore Mutero, Tonderai Muswere, Michael Muchengeti, Manasa Mutero and Nicholas Mutero, according to Zed 24 News, the country’s local newspaper, were charged before the High Court in Harare for murder. Owen Tagu, the High Court Justice, told Zed 24 News that he heard how on that day, their priest, Zvidzai Muchengeti had invited the late pastor to attend the home in the Muzarabani district, which is situated along the Mozambique-Zimbabwe border. The five men had requested the pastor to help them cleanse their home of evil spirits, because it was causing mysterious deaths in their family and the cleansing ceremony had to be performed on that day because a memorial service for a departed family member had been slated to hold the following day. Pastor Kanyama had reportedly asked his followers to bury him alive so that he could summon more cleansing powers to heal the family that had been plagued by mysterious deaths. “In response to our request to perform a healing ceremony, Kanyama ordered us to dig a grave and bury him alive because that was the way he summoned more healing powers to ward off evil spirits,” they explained. However, the plan boomeranged, as the pastor, instead of resurrecting as he planned, the men dug up the grave again to find him dead. The state witness, Father Zvidzai, told the High Court that Kanyama helped to dig his own grave before praying and jumping inside, adding that after Kanyama laid face down in the grave, he ordered his followers to cover him with soil. Zvidzai: “He secured a grave-shaped pit in front of my hut and asked for help to dig the pit. The deceased requested to be buried alive so that he would gain power to drive away the evil forces after resurrecting.” One Joseph Taderera told court that as the men were in the process of filling the grave, he asked them to stop what they were doing as he was scared for the life of the prophet; though, they snubbed him when the prophet insisted they continued the process of burying him alive, stating that he would rise from the grave unharmed. Taderera said: “I warned the men about the danger of their actions, still they disregarded me because the deceased kept telling me that I am disturbing his angels, and urged them to continue filling the grave, saying that he would later come out alive.” http://dailypost.ng/2015/07/22/pastor-fails-to-rise-up-after-instructing-members-to-bury-him-alive/

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday refused to grant an interim order stopping the appointment or selection of the Minority Leader of the Senate, a decision which may clear the way for a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, to step into the position. The plaintiffs – Alaye Pedro and Dr. Okechukwu Ibeh – had in their ex parte application for the interim order indicated that Akpabio had been tipped for the position in breach of the Senate Standing Order which prohibits appointment of a first term senator like the former governor into any principal office of the Senate. But Justice Gabriel Kolawole, after hearing the plaintiffs’ lawyer, Mr. B. J Akomolafe on Tuesday, dismissed majority of their prayers contained in the ex parte application, holding in his ruling on Wednesday that the plaintiffs not being members of the Senate, lacked the locus standi file the suit and be granted such application. The judge then adjourned the main suit till October 5 and opted to return the case file to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court who will re-assign same to another judge when the court resumes from its ongoing vacation. Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Akpabio are the first and second respondents to the suit, which is marked FHC/ABJ/CS/602/2015. The rest of the respondents are 16 PDP senators from the South-South, the region to which the Peoples Democratic Party as the leading minority party in the Senate had zoned the position of the Minority Leader. The other respondents include Senators Nelson Effiong, Bassey Albert, Emmanuel Paulker, Ogola Foster, Ben Murray Bruce, John Enoh, Gershom Bassey, Rose Oko, James Manager and Peter Nwaoboshi. Others are Senators Ighoyota Amori, Clifford Ordia, Mathew Urhoghide, George Sekibo, Olaka Nwogu, and Osinakchukwu Ideozu. In rejecting the plaintiffs’ prayer for the interim restraining order on Wednesday, Justice Kolawole held that he was not convinced that the plaintiffs, not being members of the Senate, had the locus standi to institute the action. Justice Kolawole also refused to grant the plaintiffs’ request for an order for abridging the time within which the respondents to the suit have to file their defence. http://www.punchng.com/news/court-refuses-to-stop-appointment-of-senate-minority-leader/ |
