Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have taken over the secretariat of the All Progressives Congress located at Imo State University Junction in Owerri. The development came on the heels of APC’s nationwide ward congresses held on May 5, which were marred by crisis in the state. The national leadership of the party had announced the postponement of the Imo State Local Government congresses which took place across other parts of the country last weekend. This is even as unidentified hoodlums last Friday allegedly set the party secretariat on fire amidst a downpour. The fire, which mostly affected the inner parts of the secretariat, was said to have destroyed vital party documents and equipment. The APC state chairman, Hillary Eke, had told The PUNCH that he had petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, over the fire at the secretariat on May 5. He had said that members of staff of the secretariat “identified those who launched an attack on the secretariat while the ward congress was going on across the 305 electoral wards in the state.” When our correspondent visited the secretariat on Monday, armed policemen were seen manning the entrance, with their Hilux van packed by the side. Nobody was allowed entry into the secretariat, even as the building was locked up. Also, no secretariat workers or party official was seen around. When contacted, the Police spokesperson, Andrew Enwerem, said that the Police took over the secretariat following the fire outbreak on Friday. According to Enwerem, the Command leadership had ordered a “thorough” investigation into the circumstances that led to the inferno at the secretariat. He said that in order not to compromise the process of investigation, the Police had to “temporarily” take over the secretariat Enwerem said, “We have temporarily taken over the secretariat following the fire outbreak. “The Police are investigating and in order not to jeopardise the investigation process, we have to take the secretariat over in the meantime. “This is to avoid any other attack on the secretariat and to make sure that peace is restored.” http://www.punchng.com/breaking-police-take-over-imo-apc-secretariat/ |
Adelani Adepegba, Abuja Shiite youths protesting the continued detention of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, have grounded the Federal Secretariat complex, Abuja, as they took over the roads in the area. The secretariat complex is a few metres from the National Assembly and the Presidential Villa. The youths, who were armed with stones, chased away a police team and overturned a traffic warden cabin on the road. They also reportedly injured the Federal Secretariat Divisional Police Crime officer in the face after he asked them to stop harassing motorists. Chanting “Free El-Zakyzaky,” the Shiite members dared the Police to engage and dislodge them. A team of policemen has just arrived to dislodge the angry youths. Gbenga Odogun, Odogun, Lokoja The trial judge in the bail application of the Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has reserved judgement till 16th May, 2018. Justice Nasir Ajana adjourned after listening to arguments from both the prosecuting counsel, Dr. Alex Iziyon (SAN) and the defense counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN). Earlier, the prosecuting counsel had told the trial judge not to grant the bail application, as the defendant had been certified fit to stand trial. He filed a counter affidavit to the effect that Melaye had made an attempt to escape by jumping out of the Police van taking him to Lokoja. Ozekhome, in his response, said that the senator managed to run away from the scene after being tear-gassed; adding that someone who wanted to escape justice would either run to his village or any other place where he will not be easily reached; but in Melaye’s case, he ended up in National Hospital, Abuja. Iziyon also argued that he did not believe for one minute that the senator was being treated in any hospital, saying that Melaye only feigned an ailment after he attempted to escape when being taken to Lokoja He argued that the defense counsel had not been able to prove that the alleged ailment was beyond the responsibility of the prison. He said that there were medical facilities that could adequately take care of the defendant since it has not been proved that the so-called ailment requires specialist attention that cannot be provided by the prison authorities. The defence counsel, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), submitted that the prosecuting counsel got it all wrong, arguing that the Constitution allows a high court judge to administer an applicant to bail. However, the judge held that both parties should agree on where Melaye will be held. Ozekhome noted that they were in the court on the issue of bail, arguing that there were medical reports from the National Hospital, Abuja, confirming his client’s asthmatic conditions, and injuries in the spines and on the legs. “His being transferred to intensive care unit on the National hospital from police clinic was also a pointer to the fact that they recognised the dangerous condition he was in, as he was not taken to a hotels or VIP lodge to relax but to the National Hospital, Abuja,” Melaye’s counsel said. “They have not also denied the fact that he suffered an attack right there before the senior magistrate and had to be given his inhaler to stabilise his condition. “They have not put forward any documentary evidence to oppose the ones tendered before the court as regards his dangerous health conditions,” he submitted. The Peoples Democratic Party has criticised the repeated snub of Senate’s invitation by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, and described the attitude as “an assault on Nigeria’s democracy”. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reported that Idris, who was expected to appear before the Senate on Tuesday, failed to show up. It was the third time the Police boss was failing to honour such invitation. Irked by that behaviour, the senate on Tuesday passed a vote of no confidence on the IGP and declared him unfit to hold any public office. The PDP, in its reaction to the development, said that it was “very wrong” for the IGP to ignore the invitation, saying that he had missed a chance to share ideas with the lawmakers on ways to tackle the insecurity in the nation, “His (IGP)’s refusal to honour the invitation is a deliberate assault on Nigeria’s democracy; it is a willful denigration of the National Assembly and a recourse to totalitarianism,” the party said in a statement signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, its National Publicity Secretary. The PDP said that it was “unfortunate” that Idris had, for the third time, shunned the Senate invitation over the worsening security situation in the nation. “Never in our democratic history as a people and as a nation, has a service chief treated the National Assembly with disdain like the current IGP. “All over the world, the legislature is a bastion of democracy and our constitution, in recognition of this, provides a special place for our National Assembly, as the representatives of the people, to serve as a check on the executive arm. “We, therefore, condemn this offensive on our democracy by IGP Idris. We also condemn the deliberate insult being heaped on each of our legislators by appointees of President Muhammadu Buhari,’’ the party said. The PDP urged the President of the Senate and other senators to protect the institution of the legislature and the country’s democracy by not limiting their action only to finding Ibrahim Idris as “unfit” to hold public office. “The Senate should take the next step within their legislative instrument and powers to restore the respect and dignity which the generality of Nigerians and the 1999 Constitution (as amended), bestowed on them,” the statement said. The House of Representatives has ordered the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Idris Ibrahim, to unseal the National Headquarters of Peace Corps of Nigeria within 21 days. This follows the recommendation by the House Committee on Public Petitions, which conducted investigative hearing into the “illegal” closure of Peace Corps facilities and the alleged disobedience to subsisting court orders to unseal the premises. Peace Corps facilities located at number 57, Iya Abubakar Crescent, off Alex Ekwueme street, opposite Jabi lake, Abuja, had been under lock and keys by the police since February 28th, 2017, the day the property was commissioned. Justice Gabriel Kolawole of Federal High Court, Abuja, had on the 9th November 2017, ordered that the office be unsealed, while awarding N12.5m damages against the Police. In a similar development, Justice John Tsoho of another division of Federal High Court Abuja, had also, on the 15th January, 2018, given judgement that Police should vacate the Peace Corps office. None of the judgements was obeyed and no valid stay of execution was obtained by the Police whose operatives and vehicles are permanently stationed at the premises. Irked by the development, a group under the aegis of Coalition of Civil Society Organisations for Justice and Equity, petitioned the National Assembly, urging it to intervene in order “to save our democracy and insist on rule of law.” Presenting the report of the investigation to the plenary on Wednesday, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Petitions, Hon. Nkem Abonta, said series of invitations were sent to the Inspector-General of Police to appear before the committee but he refused to honour. Abonta also said, the committee obtained a document which showed that, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami wrote to the IGP and advised him to honour the subsisting court orders, “in absence of any appeal or valid stay of execution.” He told the House that, a legal officer who represented the IGP at public hearing committed perjury, stressing that, “he lied under oath that there was a valid stay of execution”, but when time was given that he produced a proof of stay, he could not produce any. Abonta expressed concern that, it would spell doom for Nigerian democracy and it would also give room to anarchy, if “an agency of the Federal Government (police) continues to disobey orders of the court.” While adopting the recommendation of the committee, the House urged Police to comply with the subsisting court orders and the instruction from the AGF. The police have 21 days from the commencement of Wednesday’s plenary, to vacate the properties of Peace Corps. http://dailypost.ng/2018/05/09/breaking-reps-order-police-vacate-peace-corps-office-within-21-days/

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday met behind closed doors with the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara. The meeting was held inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja shortly after Buhari returned from his weekend trip to his hometown, Daura in Katsina State. At the end of the meeting, Saraki and Dogara told State House correspondents that they reported the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to the President over his handling of the case involving Senator Dino Melaye and his disdain for the National Assembly. They also said the meeting which was at the instance of the President discussed the issue of the 2018 Appropriation Bill still before the National Assembly, the recent invasion of the Senate during which the mace was taken away and the fallouts or Buhari’s recent visit to the United States of America during which he met the US President, Donald Trump. They, however, said the issue of the impeachment process being contemplated in the National Assembly over Buhari’s approval for the payment of $496m for fighter jets before he sought the approval of the Federal lawmakers was not discussed at the meeting. “We came on the invitation of Mr. President. He wanted to brief us on his trip to the United States and also the issue of the budget. “We also talked on the issue of concerns to us: the invasion of the National Assembly, which he showed great concern and he said action will be taken to investigate that,” Saraki said. When asked when the budget will be ready, Saraki said, “Hopefully, it should be laid this week. If it can be laid this week and passed early next week. We are hoping it will be laid this week.” Saraki said the President saw the invasion of the Senate as an embarrassment to the country and promised that the incident would be properly investigated because it was not just about the National Assembly but about the country. When asked what was being done to improve the relationship between the executive and the legislature, Saraki said the National Assembly had always been ready to support the Executive. “Our being here was the initiative of Mr. President to brief us on his visit to America and to engage in discussions and I think that is a good sign. “We, at the National Assembly, have always been ready to give all our support to the executive and we will continue to work along those lines. “As I said, the presidential system that we operate, we sometimes have the responsibility to check the excesses of the executive. So, there will always be times we will disagree but by and large, we will always work for the interest of Nigerians and always keep on moving on,” he said. http://www.punchng.com/saraki-dogara-report-ig-to-buhari-over-disdain-for-senate-melaye/ |

The Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB) has announced May 30th as date for this year’s sit-at-home exercise. Its media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful announced through a press statement. The exercise has become an annual event, which the group said is used to honour Igbo indigenes who lost their lives in the three-year long civil war which took place between 1967 and 1970. IPOB said this year’s event would be special as it has included states in the middle belt, which are being ravaged by Fulani herdsmen as part of the exercise. Powerful said another unique feature of this year’s exercise is that unlike other years when members are advised to stay at home, this year’s will feature solemn church service from the night of 29th May all through to 30th May. This it said would be in honour and in remembrance of those killed during the civil war, those killed by security forces during IPOB rallies and those killed by Fulani cattle herders in the middle-belt area of Nigeria. Part of the press statement released to DAILY POST correspondent by the group read, “We consider it imperative to use this opportunity to announce the sit at home order throughout Biafraland and Nigeria in remembrance of our fallen heroes and heroines. “This year, we shall also remember all victims of Fulani herdsmen attacks, Boko Haram violence and those that died at the hands of Nigerian security agencies over the years that nobody remembers. “We are calling on all the people of Southern Kaduna, Middle Belt especially Benue, Adamawa, Kogi, those affected by herdsmen terrorism in Ondo and other states in Yorubaland to join the great family of IPOB in observing a day of solemn prayer and sit at home to remember those that lost their lives unlawfully at the hands of Fulani terrorist herdsmen and security agencies.” The group further stated that, “This year’s remembrance will be special because it will present a unique moment of shared pains and misery for all the families that lost their loved ones to war, hunger, disease and terrorism. “We remember those that sacrificed their lives to defend the defenseless and those that lost their lives because there was no one to defend them. “There will be no human, vehicular or animal movement across Biafraland on the 30th May 2018. Biafraland will be in total lock down. Middle Belt and Yorubaland brethren are advised to join this historic sit at home to honour the memory of all that died unjustly in Nigeria. “Churches, mosques, synagogues and temples are encouraged to open their places of worship on the midnight of the 29th of May for special midnight prayers in remembrance of all that died as a result of violence. Special vigil will be held at the homes of select Biafran heroes. “30th of May is an annual remembrance event initiated by IPOB worldwide to honour our fallen Biafran soldiers without whom this generation of Biafrans would not have existed. We owe our heroes of the class of 67-70 an incalculable debt of gratitude and shall honor them annually until the end of time. We shall never forget them!” It called on its members in the Diaspora to ensure full rally on the streets of their respective countries with written petitions which would be submitted to the nearest United Nations offices and embassies of foreign missions in those countries. President Muhammadu Buhari will arrive in Abuja from his Washington, D.C. official visit on Thursday (today) evening. This was made known by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, via his Twitter handle on Thursday afternoon. He wrote, “MB arrives Abuja this evening. The good work of rebuilding Nigeria continues.” The President had visited the United States of America for three days, during which he had met President Donald Trump at the White House. Earlier on Thursday, another presidential aide, Garba Shehu, had volunteered that President Buhari, who reportedly left Washington, D.C. two days ago, is currently on “technical stopover” in London, without elaborating what he meant. It may, however, be recalled that the President sees his doctors in the British capital, where had spent 107 days after which he confessed to having been seriously sick.
