PoliticsBuhari Dissociates Self From Media Bill, Says, I Am Committed To Free Speech by dotcomnamename(op): 6:06pm On Dec 07, 2015
The Nigerian Presidency has issued the statement below, quoting President Muhammadu Buhari as dissociating himself as his administration from the media muzzle law being cooked by the Nigerian Senate.

SOCIAL MEDIA BILL: BUHARI RESTATES COMMITMENT TO FREE SPEECH.

President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated the commitment of his administration to the protection of free speech in keeping with democratic tradition.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu who was reacting to the public hostility towards the social media bill now being debated by the Senate, said President Buhari has sworn to defend the constitution of Nigeria and would not lend his hand to anything that is inconsistent with the constitution.

“But he is not averse to lawful regulation, so long as that is done within the ambit of the constitution which he swore to uphold.”

“The President said free speech is central to democratic societies anywhere in the world. The President explained that without free speech, elected representatives won’t be able to gauge public feelings and moods about governance issues.

“As a key component of democratic principles,” the President acknowledged that people in democratic societies “are so emotionally attached to free speech that they would defend it with all their might.”

“Malam Garba Shehu explained that President Buhari is fully aware of the public reservations about the proposed legislation but assured that there is no cause for alarm “because the Senate is a democratic senate. The President won’t assent to any legislation that may be inconsistent with the constitution of Nigeria.”

PoliticsIgbo Group In Niger State Disassociates Self From Pro-biafra Protest - Channels by dotcomnamename(op): 7:11pm On Dec 02, 2015
he Niger State Chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has disassociated itself from the ongoing agitation in some parts of Nigeria for the actualisation of Biafra nation.

They claimed to be leaving peacefully with their host communities in the state.

The association made their stand known in Minna during visit to the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of journalists (NUJ) Niger State. They were led by the President of the State’s chapter, Mr Ezeugo Emmanuel, who stated that Igbos were peace loving people and must be appreciated.

Mr Emmanuel further revealed that his people would continue to be friendly and leave in peace with other tribes in the nation.

The President urged the Federal Government to avoid the use of force on the agitators, maintaining that through dialogue, the issue could be resolved amicably. He pleaded for sustainable peace in Nigeria.

He intimated that the chapter had concluded plans to organise its 2015 summit in Suleja on December 12, 2015, with the theme: Udo’s Organiru Na Ako N’ Uche (Peace, Progress and Tact), under the chairmanship of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyawu, and a host of other prominent Nigerians.

A man who was after me was granted France visa but that's his second attempt according to him, my fiancé is a Danish citizen , do you have an idea how it works if she comes over here and we get married, any possibilities I could be granted visa if we get married here and she goes back ? Don't have an idea how that works .
We told you before, even def111 hinted you but you were encouraged not to listen to people. At times nothing ever becomes real till it is experienced. Read here https://www.nairaland.com/1163128/french-embassy-lagos-sells-visas . Beside that, go and read the new FRENCH TOUGH MEASURES shortly after the Paris attack, you will understand. There is no developed country that will experience such attack that won't cleverly show security concern when granting visa at this period. Even before the attack France no dey really give visa let alone after the attack. Just ignore them, get your fiance to 9ja and head to registry. God will grant you your heart desire.
PoliticsRe: Why Buhari Won't Succeed In 4 Years - Cramjones by dotcomnamename: 5:26pm On Nov 27, 2015
[s]
cramjones:
This is a very difficult op-ed to write haven been identified as an ardent supporter of President Mohammadu Buhari, however, I have sat back to study the trends in terms of the raw data that reflects development indicators for Nigeria and have realized that fixing Nigeria is way beyond PMB at this point, for the most part in the first 4 years of this government, expect nothing but a little improvement but for the most part things getting really worse! Here is why.

1. When oil was over $100/bararell for the most part in GEJ's regime, the per capita income was only $2800 (average annual earning per head as a function of total GDP), meaning Nigeria saw more money than it had ever seen in the past 16 years, but most citizens can't point out to any Dubai-like improvement. Most of that money made people like Dasuki and Deziani billionaires and left over 112 million people living in poverty. Today oil price less than half of it, per capita income is down to $2200 with persistent rampant corruption even under Buhari. I doubt that any tangible thing can be done in four years. In fact, the economy is so bad that Buhari can't even balance the budget without driving Nigeria further into debt by asking the Senate to grant him approval to borrow over $10billion.

2. Today our growth rate is 2% as opposed to an annual rate of 7%. A 2% growth rate with no hope of an oil price increase will only lead to more job losses, less capital development, and an even more indebted nation.

3. Naira has fallen from N160 to N225 to a dollar in less than 2 years. To understand the impact of this better, consider the following:

Mr Musa earns N160,000 monthly 2 years ago, an equivalent of $1000 value at that time. If Mr. Musa is still earning N160,000 it simply means the real value of money he has is $711. This is even more real in Nigeria since almost everything is imported, and the USD is the currency used to purchase this goods. It simply means that more naira would have to be used to purchase the dollar....eventually this would lead to the price of many things going up since importers would have to break even. Take a trip to the Lagos ports, they are almost dead, customs have lost over 70% of their revenue in the last year or so, due to an almost docile activity.

4. With ISIS attacking Paris, Boko Haram has been more emboldened to continue its campaign on soft targets. The geo-political climate of Nigeria has given rise to Biafra, and in general a wave of percieved and real instability. This will only drive away investors - leaving Nigeria in a more gloomy economy mess.

5. For the past 6 months, Nigeria has had little or no policy directions. We have only 1.5 years to go, and campaigns for elections will begin. As campaigns draw closer, most of the money that would be needed for capital development woudl be diverted for elections. Agitations in the South East would continue, Boko Haram attacks on soft targets will continue, youths would remain unemployed due to little or no capital flowing into and within the country. I only see doom.

I love APC, but I am afraid, the nation can only see any TRUE change if you only give it at least a decade, the remaining 3.5 years is definitely NOT going to be better. Brace yourselves for the worst before it gets an inch better.

God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

PoliticsUK Officials Write Letter To Visit Nnamdi Kanu In Detention by dotcomnamename(op): 10:12am On Nov 25, 2015
Nnamdi Kanu has confirmed to the UK that he does not require the British government to make any further representations to the Nigerian Authorities on his behalf.

A Conservative minister has said that British consular officials will visit controversial Radio Biafra director Nnamdi Kanu, whose arrest in October has led to protests in London and Nigeria, after a question from the joint Nigerian-British activist’s constituency MP, Harriet Harman.

James Duddridge, Minister for Africa and the Caribbean, confirmed that Kanu, who is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob) had been visited in Nigeria by members of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office but that he did not ask for British consular assistance.

Kanu was arrested by the Nigeria state service (DSS) on charges of criminal conspiracy, intimidation and belonging to an unlawful society. He pleaded not guilty. Ipob and other pro-Biafran movements call for the independence of territories that constituted the Biafran Republic, established in 1967 and re-annexed by Nigeria in 1970, following a civil war that claimed between one and three million lives.

On 23 November, Kanu attended a hearing at the Abuja Magistrates Court and his trial was adjourned to 1 December. Kanu’s lawyer, Vincent Obetta, said the DSS had been authorised by the court to further detain his client to “conclude what they said was an investigation of terrorism and terrorism financing”.

Kanu’s arrests sparked protests in Nigeria and other countries with pro-Biafrans demanding the immediate release of their leader.

Duddridge said in his letter: “Kanu is a dual Nigerian/British national. In cases involving dual nationals in their country of other nationality we do not usually provide consular assistance unless we judge an individual to be particular vulnerable.

“Following concerns raised by friends of Mr. Kanu to the Foreign and Commonwealth office, including about his well-being and ongoing medical condition, we judged it appropriate in this instance to offer assistance.

“The Nigerian Authorities granted access to our consular team to visit Mr Kanu on 3 November 2015 where he is being detained in Abuja. Mr Kanu has confirmed to us that he has access to a lawyer and that he does not require the British government to make any further representations to the Nigerian Authorities on his behalf. We do, however, intend to make a further consular visit to check on his well-being.”

Shortly after Kanu’s arrest, the DSS told IBTimes UK he was released on bail. However Obetta, as well as Kanu’s followers, claimed he was still being detained. IBTimes UK repeatedly tried to contact the DSS for a statement regarding Kanu, but has had no response.
