They then brought in some mouth watering deal that the city can just resist and viola! Newark International Airport is a second parking lot for Uber drivers waiting to pick passengers.

As for that state law? Well, it has been drastically watered down. Now some in the local taxi union sensing the loosing battle have upgraded the look of their taxi and have signed up with Uber and now carrying GPS and working for Uber...intact, most TLC cab drivers in New York City are Uber drivers as well.

Über has perfected this strategy and rolls it out in any city with potentials to make them money. Bottomline, these laws will not make Uber to leave as long as there is money to be made, if anything they will affect the local cab services that does not have the financial might of an international company first, before they start affecting Uber.

Secondly, the demography that used Uber in Nigeria are influential after all if one can choose to pay N3,500 for a trip that would have cost just N150, they are not push overs. Lagos, just need money, and Uber will give them a deal that they will not refuse, my fears is...the local cab company which this new law is purported to help...will not be fully represented at the meeting, when that deal is made.

This makes much sense.

Brazil sacks President for budget padding



Brazil’s Senate has voted in favour of permanently removing President Dilma Rousseff from her office, in an impeachment trial set to end 13 years of leftist rule in the country, Al Jazeera reports.

Sixty-one of 81 senators voted against Rousseff on Wednesday after a five-day trial and a lengthy overnight debate.



“Today is the day that 61 men, many of them charged and corrupt, threw 54 million Brazilian votes in the garbage,” Rousseff tweeted minutes after the decision.

In a separate vote senators decided not to ban Rousseff from seeking a public office for the next eight years.

Al Jazeera reported that Rousseff was watching the session from the presidential palace and would speak a couple of hours after the vote at a news conference.

She also said that the case was not expected to go any further as the charges were political, not criminal.

Allies of Rousseff have signalled that they would take the case to the Supreme Court. But several motions filed to the country’s highest court throughout the impeachment proceedings have failed.

Rousseff’s former vice-president turned rival Michel Temer, 75, was sworn in as president on Wednesday until the next scheduled election in late 2018.

Rousseff, from the leftist Workers’ Party, is accused of taking illegal state loans to patch budget holes in 2014, masking the country’s problems as it slid into its deepest recession in decades.

She told the Senate that she was innocent, saying the impeachment trial amounted to a right-wing coup d’etat.

Rousseff asserted that impeachment was the price she paid for refusing to quash a wide-ranging police investigation into the state oil company Petrobras, saying that corrupt politicians conspired to oust her to derail the investigation into billions in kickbacks at the oil giant.

She said it was “an irony of history” that she would be judged for crimes she did not commit, by people accused of serious crimes.

The Workers’ Party under Rousseff and her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is credited with raising around 29 million Brazilians out of poverty.

But many now blame the party and Rousseff in particular for the country’s multiple ills.

Rio 2016: Delta Airline saves Nigeria embarrassment

Contrary to reports that the presidency could have bailed out the U-23 football team stranded in Atlanta, USA by sending a presidential jet to ferry the team to Brazil, the CNN yesterday reported how American airline, Delta Airline assisted the team and saved Nigeria from an embarrassment of missing their opening game against Japan early this morning.

According to the CNN, the airline which has its headquarters in Atlanta were touched by a video posted by the Nigeria football Federation, NFF of the historic moment 20 years ago in Atlanta on August 3, 1996, captioned: “Our Dream Team won gold in the football event of the Atlanta Olympic games #20YearsAgoInAtlanta.”

The airline, it was reported, is temporarily picking up the bills of the charter flight, with an understanding that the NFF will pay them back later. The unfortunate incident, it was gathered was caused by a payment mix-up between the sports ministry and a charter airline firm. The ministry, unlike the usual practice, decided to deal directly with the charter firm instead of appointing an agency which knows the terrain. “The Nigerian Olympic football team were stranded at the airport and almost not going to make their match against Japan,” said Reese McCranie, director of policy and communications for Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta.

The airport decided to work with Delta to make sure the team made its match on time, he told CNN. Shockingly too, the Delta airline, it was reported, was not only picking the bill of flying the team from Atlanta to Manaus, venue of their match against Japan but also had to put them in a hotel in Atlanta after they were left stranded at the airport. Stressing that their decision to help the U-23 team out of their predicament came down to a moment’s notice, Delta airline spokesman Anthony Black said, “This is a special occasion, not only because it’s the Olympics. Exactly 20 years ago, on this day, the Nigerian football team needed a miracle to beat Argentina to win the gold medal in Atlanta at the Olympics. Today, we are happy to help them with another miracle.”

An elated team coach, Samson Siasia who told Delta airline that they chose to train in Atlanta because of the gold they won there 20 years ago expressed his happiness at being in Atlanta and foreshadowed the team’s difficulty in getting on a flight. “Well, we are here [Atlanta], that’s a good thing … we are having struggles here and there like every federation but the [Nigerian Football] Federation is behind us to make sure we are prepared well to the Olympics,” he said. Aware the team will arrive only a couple of hours to the opening match, Siasia said the flight on Delta airline makes the players happy because they “will have more leg room and they will be able to sleep on their way to Manaus.”

Lagos to jail street hawkers from July 1- Ambode

The Lagos State Government on Friday said that from July 1, 2016, it would commence a total enforcement against street trading and street hawkers, saying that the law banning their activities across the metropolis would take its full course.

Speaking at a live interview session on Television Continental, the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode said that the renewed enforcement is in line with Section One of the Lagos State Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003 which restricts street trading and hawking in the metropolis.

The Governor, while sympathising with the family of a street hawker who was knocked down by an articulated truck while trying to evade arrest from officials of Kick Against Indiscipline along Maryland Bus stop on Wednesday, regretted that the situation led to the destruction of public assets.

“It is not in our DNA to allow someone to just die by road accident or the way it happened in respect of the incident. But beyond the fact that we lost one person while crossing the road as a result of evading arrest by KAI officials, I need to tell Lagosians that over 49 buses were actually destroyed and it is costing us like almost N139m to put those buses back on the road,” he said.



Consequently, Governor Ambode said the State Executive Council has resolved to enforce the Law, which according to him makes both the hawker and the buyer liable of the offence.

“The issue is we need to enforce our laws because we already have a law in respect of that and then there is a clause in it which says the buyer and the seller are both liable and that we are going to fine them either N90, 000 or a six month jail term.

“What we are doing on traffic is that we are introducing new strategies to eliminate traffic, but Lagos being a cosmopolitan city, you cannot totally eliminate it but now this is the case, in the next few days, you will see on the street of Lagos signs that will be warning you that buyers and hawkers should be aware that there are consequences,” Governor Ambode said.

Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation, Barrister Chris Green has denied any knowledge of the employment of Frenchman Paul Le Guen to tinker the Super Eagles.

Christopher Green In an exclusive interview with Sports Vanguard on our hotline yesterday, Green revealed that the former coach of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon who qualified them for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa has not applied to coach the Nigerian national team.

‘’As the chairman of the Technical Committee whose responsibility it is to interview and employ coaches for the Super Eagles, there is no application from Le Guen to manage the Eagles. I don’t know where these stories of Le Guen are coming from. He has not applied. All I know is that the job of the Super Eagles coach must be thrown open for the right qualified person. And such a successful coach must show the desire of coaching in Nigeria. We are in a dilemma right now and must do the right thing to get it right. We cannot toy with the emotions of millions of Nigerians’’,Green, who described the coming of Le Guen as a ‘’rumour’’, said.

‘’The Technical Committee of the NFF is made up of knowledgeable people, most of them who played football at the highest level. We have names like Christian Chukwu, Chief Adeboye Onigbinde, Victor Ikpeba, Garba Lawal, Paul Bassey and others. These gentlemen can confirm to you if we have received any application from Le Guen. Sex scandal: US govt cancels three Reps’ visas, Dogara orders probe

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, on Thursday, directed the investigation of three members of the House for an alleged sex scandal.

The Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Abdulrazak Namdas, confirmed this in Abuja just as investigations had shown that the United States Embassy had cancelled the visas of the affected members.

Namdas explained that the leadership of the House decided to investigate the alleged sex scandal following a formal complaint made by the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. James Entwistle.


He said, “We are in receipt of a letter from the US Ambassador, alleging misconduct by some members of the National Assembly, who attended training in the United States of America.

“The leadership of the House has commenced its own part of the investigation. When it is concluded, we will brief Nigerians further on this issue.”

Namdas, however, declined questions on how the investigation would be conducted.

“When we say we will conduct an investigation, we will conduct it and there will be a report,” Namdas stated.

The development came as the US formally cancelled its visas from the three lawmakers, an indication that they had been barred from future trips to the United States.

However, investigations by The PUNCH showed that the speaker came under pressure from many lawmakers, who felt that the matter could tarnish the image of the National Assembly if it was not attended to.

The affected members – Mr. Mohammed Garba-Gololo (Bauchi State); Mr. Terse Gbillah (Benue State), and Mr. Samuel Ikon (Cross River State) – allegedly committed the act during a recent trip to the US to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Programme on Good Governance organised by the US Government.

The three legislators were members of a team of 10 lawmakers nominated to attend the leadership programme, which took place in Cleveland, Ohio, between April 7 and 13 this year.

Entwistle, in his June 9 letter to Dogara, stated, “It is with regret that I must bring to your attention the following situation.

“Ten members of the Nigerian National Assembly recently travelled to Cleveland, Ohio, as participants in the International Visitor Leadership Programme on good governance.

“We received troubling allegations regarding the behaviour of three members of the delegation to the US Government’s flagship professional exchange programme.

“The US Department of State and the Cleveland Council on World Affairs received reports from employees of the Cleveland hotel, where the representatives stayed, alleging that the representatives engaged in the following behaviour:

“Mohammed Garba Gololo allegedly grabbed a housekeeper in his hotel room and solicited her for sex. While the housekeeper reported this to her management, this incident could have involved local law enforcement and resulted in legal consequences for Representative Gololo.

“Mark Terseer Gbillah and Samuel Ikon allegedly requested that hotel parking attendants assist them to solicit prostitutes.”

Finding showed that the lawmakers dismissed the allegation as “baseless and untrue” when Dogara first sought their explanations.

However, he was said to have come under pressure from members, who insisted on a thorough investigation, considering the fact that the Ambassador committed it to writing.

A National Assembly source stated, “The speaker came under pressure because many members are not satisfied with the responses of the affected persons.

Another source stated, “Of course, the members have threatened legal actions and have requested video evidence from the US Ambassador since the housekeeper was said to have identified Garba-Gololo in a group photograph.

“Members felt that the House should thoroughly investigate the allegation to establish the correct position. The 8th Assembly passed a Code of Conduct to members of the House in 2015.

“This is one of the test cases and it is important that we clear this issue.”

Some of the members, who participated in the programme were Chairman, House Committee on the Diaspora Affairs, Mrs. Rita Orji; Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Gaza Jonathan; Mrs. Ayo Omidiran; Mr. Danburam Abubakar; and Mr. Nkole Ndukwe.

US cancels Reps’ visa

The US embassy, it was learnt, had written the three members cancelling their visas to the US.

One of the lawmakers, Gbillah, wrote Entwistle on Thursday (yesterday), accusing the US of not giving the three members fair hearing.

Gbillah also expressed surprise in his letter that within hours of bringing the matter to the attention of the House, the US Government had gone ahead to cancel the visas of the lawmakers.

He threatened to immediately institute legal actions against the US Government, the Ambassador and the Marriot Hotel Brand, among others for damages.

Part of Gbillah’s letter, which was dated June 16, read, “Without conclusive evidence of any sort or contact with any of the accused individuals, the US State Department and US Embassy in Nigeria have less than six days after your letter to the Speaker, gone ahead to revoke the US visas of the accused individuals based on hearsay from the employees of the hotel in Cleveland.

“Affected individuals received correspondence from the US Embassy on Wednesday, June 15, 2016, indicating the denial of their US visas and requesting that they bring their passports with the current US visa to the Embassy.”

The letter was copied to Dogara, the US Secretary of State, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Cleveland Council of World Affairs, and the President and Chief Executive Officer, Marriott International.

On his part, Ikon claimed that the allegation levelled against him was not only untrue but also a case of mistaken identity.

He stated, “My attention has been drawn to the publication, alleging an act of impropriety against me by the US Mission in Nigeria.

“I wish to state unequivocally that this is false and definitely not me.

“This, to me, is a case of mistaken identity and I have already instituted measures both legally and diplomatically to clear my name and the institution I represent.

The US Mission in Nigeria refused to comment on Entwistle’s letter on Thursday.

“We do not comment on private diplomatic correspondence. Thank you very much for your inquiry,” the Mission’s Press Attaché, Sean McIntosh, said in an email.

N7bn allegation: Musa Dikwa apologises to Oritsejafor, Oyedepo


Barely one year after his allegation that ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, allegedly gave out N7 billion to the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Pentecostal Fellowship off Nigeria (PFN), to facilitate and support his reelection, the controversial Pastor and Executive Director of the Voice of Northern Christian Movement (VNCM), Kallamu Musa Dikwa, has eaten his words by apologising to the people he maligned.

Musa-Dikwa Specifically, he apologised to the President of CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor; General Overseer of Living Faith Worldwide aka Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo and Secretary, National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF), Pastor Bosun Emmanuel. One of the pastors he(Dikwa) lied against, Pastor Bosun Emmanuel shared his discussions with Musa Dikwa during an interview with Religious Affairs Correspondents, on Thursday, in Abuja.

Pastor Emmanuel in a statement recalled that “during the electioneering campaign leading to the 2015 elections, Musa Dikwa addressed a press conference in which he claimed three ministers of the gospel, the President of CAN (Pritsejafor), Bishop David Oyedepo and myself (Pastor Bosun Emmanuel) received N7 billion from the Jonathan administration to mobilise ministers of the gospel nationwide to campaign for his re-election.

Ladies & Gentlemen, Please Rise Up to Recognize the Presence of Thieves By Pius Adesanmi

That Nigerian-Canadian civil servant, Nellie Mayshak, spent years working for the government of Ontario. Not one accusation of stealing and corruption.

Then she goes back home to work in Nigeria and steals from Nigerian pensioners humongous amounts of money that would have crippled the economy of Ontario had she stolen a fraction of such amounts while she was here.

Let us forget the monumental disgrace she represents for Nigerians in the diaspora and Nigerians in Canada. Her case is instructive for only one reason.

Come with me.

Obviously, Nellie Mayshak was already a thief when working in Toronto.

But. She. Did. Not. Steal.

Question: why did she not steal in Canada?

Answer: the fear of consequences and the absence of impunity.

Canada did not work for her. Why continue to work honestly in Canada and watch your paycheck go up in smoke every month, eaten up by Federal and provincial taxes when you come originally from a society that has agreed to function on a paradigm of crime without punishment and impunity?

For any Nigerian with criminal proclivities living and working in the Western world, that is the proposition that Nigeria constantly fixes in your consciousness: come back home and join our commonwealth of crime without punishment. Come back home and become an instant billionaire. Here, we do not ask questions about how you made your money.

That Nellie did not steal in Ontario and went home to steal billions is another reason why we must rethink Nigeria radically. We cannot have a situation where you fear crime and consequence in Canada, America, and Britain and relocate to the Nigerian eldorado of crime and reward.

That she has been suspended is a good start. Let us hope for a fair judicial process that will be pursued to its logical conclusion.

However, prosecuting and jailing this Nigerian-Canadian idiot is not enough. And many of us think that the solution to our problem of lawlessness, impunity, and crime without punishment lies in visionary leadership and strong institutions. Those are significant planks of the solutions but they are hollow and ineffective without some form of social revolution and evolution which involves the forging of a collective attitude of hostility to the kind of society that we currently operate.

Until her monumental stealing as a civil servant was exposed, Nellie, like Dino, FFK, and politicians of all parties, was obviously living above her means among you. You saw her cars and mansions. Yet, she probably had a front row seat in her church, with special access to the Pastor. Yet, you invited her to social functions and, if she arrived five hours late, you stopped proceedings to "recognize her presence". Yet, you nominated her for every manner of society award. Yet, she was on the high table at every event.

Let Dasuki, Metuh, Oronsaye or any member of the 2015-2016 class of theft and corruption indictees appear at any social function in Nigeria today, you will stop proceedings to "recognize their presence." How can you run a jungle society like this and expect those with criminal proclivities among us in the Diaspora not to run home to steal from you and add to your problems?

Where thieves feel valued and recognized in the context of societal mores and mentality, no level of leadership or institutional enhancement will work.

We have to have a collective vision of the social good and develop attitudes of collective hostility to any citizen who does anything injurious to it. Such an attitude is the raw material that leadership and institutions could use.

The quantum of funds in question are revenue that ought to have accrued to the Federal Government of Nigeria through oil-lifting deals which are now subject of intensive investigations. Naira versus the Dollar, Jonathan’s Policies as Buhari’s Challenges, the Simple Economic Principles, and the colossal Damage.

There are two basic principles that govern economics within an economy, for if you transgress on the first one you are bound to pay direly for your actions in the future.

Do not spend but save and pay off your debt when the economy is at its potential and spend when the economy is below potential to bring it back to potential.Any policy, either fiscal or monetary taken by the government to push the economy back to its potential on the long run will not start to yield results until after 6 to 8 quarters, which is a year and a half to two years in a developed economy because they have less shocks and might take up to 12 quarters (3 years) in a developing economy because they have more shocks. Examples are inflations, exchange rate, civil unrest etc.

To understand these principles we will go back to history:

1999, Olusegun Obasanjo and his economic team

Obasanjo, was a president that understood economic principles and followed these core principles in managing the economy. Between 1990 and 1999, Nigeria’s economy only grew at 2% annually making it the worst economic period for the country, by 1999 when General Addulsalam handed power to OBJ, Nigeria had only USD$4 billion in its foreign reserve, but by the time OBJ left office we had USD$60 billion in the foreign reserve and another USD$40 billion in the Excess crude oil account.. OBJ and his economic team through their economic policies decided to diversify the economy moving it away from the mineral resource sector. Overnight, Nigeria’s economy grew shifting from below potential to potential and grew at annual average of 8.92% between year 2000 and 2009, Nigerian’s economic growth was only next to China and India in the world.

Obasanjo did the most sensible thing any good leader would do, following the core economic principles which may not be popular to the people, Obasanjo decided to save and pay off our foreign debt rather than spend. The effect of this is that you have money to spend to push the economy back to its potential when the economy is not doing well or below potential, and the second thing is haven reduced or paid off your debt, majority of the money will go into capital expenditures in the form of stimulus to jump start the economy rather than using it to service debts.

With the economy growing and at its potential, had OBJ decided to push money into the economy through government spending, it would have only resulted to pushing the economy beyond its potential, heating up the economy and causing inflation. Not only will it cause inflation, so much money in circulation increases the wealth of the people overnight, when people get richer, export tends to reduce and import increases because they are able to afford more of foreign goods, this puts a strain on the dollar reserve of the country increasing the value of the dollars against the Naira and will ultimately lead to an increase in negative balance of payment for the government in international trade as Nigeria is not even an exporting nation.

The Effects of Obasanjo’s Policies

Most major governments coming out of economic woes do not enjoy the positive effects of their sound policies, it was actually about after 4 to 5 years later that we started to experience the positive effects of OBJ’s economic policies.

Soludo as economic adviser and later CBN governor was able to drive his economic goals using monetary policies, by the time Soludo became CBN governor, dollar was N147 and by the time he was leaving, the dollar had reduced to N117.

Nigeria’s reserve between the Foreign Reserve and the Excess crude oil account, the country had USD$100 billion and in 2008 when there was a global recession and the economy fell below potential, Nigeria had enough foreign reserve to keep the economy growing. Nigeria had paid off majority of its loan which meant during recessions we can spend more on capital projects as stimulus and reduce expenditures for servicing debts.

Was Obasanjo’s policies the most popular among the people?….obviously no, but it was the best for the economy, most politicians who follow the core economic principles are never popular because people always want more money to spend which creates a future negative effect for the economy like what we are facing today.

Every economic boom enjoyed by the Jonathan administration was the hard work of his once political godfather OBJ and his economic team. Basically what OBJ had done was to take care of the macroeconomic problems of the country, the Naira was very stable, there was confidence in the economy and Foreign Direct Investments poured into Nigeria. Had OBJ employed the wrong economic policies before leaving office, and the policies taking about 3 years to see the effects, Jonathan would have been the one to suffer it, but OBJ stayed true to the cause of a sound and solid economic policy till he left office.

All major changes require between 5 to 10 years to reach the goal depending on the magnitude of the change, and one of the greatest reasons change efforts fail is because the successor does not either understand the change or does not have the same mission, vision and drive to implement the change. This is why most leaders choose their successors to complete whatever they have started since time does not permit them in office to drive the change to completion.

Jonathan, the opposite of economics and the beginning of our economic woes.

Like the proverbial prodigal son who inherits wealth from his father and without challenge to build on it to continue the legacy of the father but squanders it, Jonathan employed the direct opposite of economic principles with the help of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as minister of the coordinating economy. They spent and borrowed more when the economy was at its potential leaving the economy vulnerable during recession. While the ignorant Nigerians hailed her as coming from the World Bank and better suited for the job, the question remains whether it was her influence that was employed or her capabilities. Someone who claims to have worked with the World Bank and has risen to the position of Managing Director should know these simple economic principles.

In 2010, Lamido Sanusi Lamido, sounded a note of warnings that the Jonathan Administration was depleting the foreign reserve and that if we faced a recession or drop in oil prices it might spell disaster for the economy. This put the Jonathan administration on a lock horn with Sanusi and seeing Sanusi as someone who will not keep quiet switched over to spending the dollars in the Excess crude oil account.

When the governors found out that the Excess crude oil account was being tampered with by the Executive, took the executive to court and demanding that the money be shared rather than Jonathan and his cronies spending it. That was how the USD$40 billion left in the Excess crude account by OBJ was wasted. While the administration sold crude at an average price of about USD$110 per barrel for five years it never saved a dime but rather depleted everything the OBJ government had built on ground.

OBJ and his team clearly balanced the five factors of the GDP while the economy grew, he refused to push excess money into the economy, and this was clearly shown from the percentage of the service sector to GDP. In 1999 it was 26.8% and increased to 28.7% in 2009, it stayed at an average of 24.5% in 11 years, from 1999 to 2009, by 2010, our services as a percentage of GDP had increased to 51.2% over 100% increment, while the GDP grew by only 7.8%. Services had increased to 55.5% by 2014 with an average of 52.3% in 5 years from 2010 to 2014, still recording over a 100% increment while the GDP had not increased more than 28.7% over that same period.

The more money injected into the economy, the more consumer spending increases and the more the services increases, what this clearly means is that the economy was not expanding but consumer spending was increasing, our external earning was not increasing but internal spending was increasing, our revenue from export was decreasing while we spent everything we earned.

Percentage of our exports to GDP in 2001 was 45.4%, by 2006 it was 43.1%, 2010 it had further reduced to 25.3%, put in mind that our GDP and services was increasing while our external revenue earning was decreasing, by 2013 it had reduced to 18.0% and 18.4% by 2014. What is means is that our GDP growth was being fueled by too much liquidity within the system, all the money that should be in the foreign reserve was being spent in the economy thereby increasing consumer spending and the demand on the dollar.

Prior to 2003 before she was employed by the OBJ administration, Okonjo-Iweala was Vice-President and Corporate Secretary of the World Bank Groups, her job description was not that of a core banker or economist but more of compliance and due diligence. It is obvious that while she may wield the influence, the core capabilities are not there and this could be the reason after OBJ paid and renegotiated the loan arrangement for Nigeria, she was moved to the external affairs ministry from which she later resigned only to come back and plunge us into an economic disaster. Soludo was to confirm this in his open letter that most of the technical requirements and capabilities needed for the loan payments and renegotiations was handled by himself and the CBN and not Okonjo-Iweala as everyone had believed.

Why Politicians follow the Political Economic Decisions

While the core economic principles make politician seem as if they are doing nothing but it is indeed the best and most effective way to run the economy, and the reasons they make counter decisions are as follows:

They want to look good in the eyes of the populace despite the fact that their political economic decisions will have a long term negative effect which might start to materialise after 3 years. Such dire economic decisions are mostly taken when elections are around the corner.Stealing is the second reason politicians follow political economic decisions, they can’t just go into the vault and take money so they steal through over inflated projects, creating abandoned projects since the projects were not the aim in the first place. So when you see politicians embarking on massive projects during election period while the economy is booming, be sure to know that the project is not the aim.

Buhari, his Many Challenges, and the Sad truth.

As mentioned earlier, economic policies in a developing economy takes about 12 quarters (3 years) for you to start feeling either the negative or positive impact of the policies. Whatever we are suffering today are the consequences of the policies of the 2010 to 2014.

Whatever policies Buhari and his team have put on ground will not have its effects until the next three years minimum, that is just the economic truth, when OBJ started his economic policies after inheriting all the mess from the military era, it took about 5 years before we started seeing the positive effects of his policies, that’s just the way it works in economics. For those who are asking for the dividends of change, his change policies are what will lead to the goal.

There are still tougher times ahead and it is the obvious truth, in 2008 when the global recession hit Nigeria, the country had money in the foreign reserve, this clearly helped the economy as the government of Umaru Musa Yar Adua had money to inject into the economy as stimulus. When the economy is at recession or below potential as it is right now, government injects money into the economy through government spending on capital projects which acts as stimulus creating a multiplier effect in the economy. But the sad truth now is that Nigeria does not have such money hence jump starting the economy will be a herculean task for Buhari as oil prices have equally dwindled reducing Nigeria’s external earnings.

Of Change and the Expected Miracles

The goal is the goal but change is what helps you reach your goal, it is a continuum. A person that is 200kg and is fat and wants to reduce to 80kg, change is not reducing to 80kg, the goal is reducing to 80kg but change is to stop eating junk food, stop ice cream, go to the gym and exercise, that is the change that will help you shed the weight and you reach your goal of 80kg.

Buhari is instituting and driving the change, it is the change that will get Nigeria to her feet again, he is curbing corruption, plugging the loopholes, it is no longer business as usual, people are made to return stolen funds, EFCC has woken up and those who thought they could not be touched are now going to court in handcuffs, the Nigerian Customs are now generating more money and becoming accountable. We cannot totally wipe out corruption but it will be greatly reduced because people are starting to fear the consequences of their actions and they know they can’t continue to steal with impunity.

These are the change we voted for and if it continues this way we will build a better Nigeria and reach our goal, the goal still remains the goal, but CHANGE the process which we will achieve it. Buhari will obviously make mistakes, but with his integrity we will keep to the course.

People are not happy because during Jonathans time there was so much money in circulation and most people spent like there was no tomorrow, the political economic decisions are those that are popular among the people, but what they don’t see is that it is a short solution to a long term economic consequences.

Nigerians and the Chinese became the highest purchasers of private jets in the world, while that of China could be explained economically, we could not explain the rationale behind that of Nigeria, but we are all suffering the consequences today, what seem good to the people at that time was a future economic disaster.

SERIOUSLY: NIGERIAN ARMY ‘FINDS’ BUHARI’S SCHOOL CERTIFICATE


The Nigerian Army has finally found the missing certificate which has raised contention as to the eligibility of Gen Mohammadu Buhari to contest the presidential election.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has released statement on its Facebook alleging that someone from the Peoples Democratic Party must have hid Buhari’s certificate in order to bar him from contesting the presidential poll.

Someone working for the PDP obviously removed the certificate from his file at the Defence Headquarters.
This is part of the strategies the PDP deployed in their campaign of calumny.

All Change Agents who worked tirelessly to repel the Jonahideens should pop something wherever you are. We know it was foolhardy to say that Buhari had no certificate. But try as we did to convince them that this was a non issue, they refused to shift ground. It was even most disgraceful that the Director General of the PDP Presidential Campaign organisation was a Retired Colonel, in the person of Ahmadu Ali. He should have cautioned them about bringing the Military to disrepute. He did not.

This singular act as far as I am concerned did more damage than good to the PDP.

Beyond bringing out Buhari’s certificate, there is an urgent need to restore pride and sanity to the military. As it stands now, the Nigerian Army, is an Army of anything goes! There have to be a clean sweep and overhaul of the military from top to bottom! The entire top echelon at the Defence Headquarters should turn in their resignation and leave with President Goodluck Jonathan on the 29th of May, so that the process of rebuilding and restoration shall begin in earnest.

EXCLUSIVE: Obasanjo writes Saraki, Dogara, accuses National Assembly of corruption, greed, lawlessness, impunity


Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has written the National Assembly accusing the lawmakers of corruption, impunity, greed and of repeatedly breaking the nation’s laws.
In a letter dated January 13 and addressed to the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, the former president specifically accused the lawmakers of fixing and earning salaries and allowances far above what the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission approved for them.
He also alleged that most of the 109 senators and 369 members of the House of Representatives were receiving constituency allowances without maintaining constituency offices as the laws required of them.
Mr. Obasanjo was president between 1999 and 2007.
In the letter, exclusively obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, the former president said on a few occasion, both in and out of office as president, he had agonised over the massive corruption and lawlessness at the National Assembly and other arms and tiers of government.
He said he had reflected and expressed, outspokenly at times, his views on the practice in the National Assembly “which detracts from “distinguishness” and “honourability” because it is shrouded in opaqueness and absolute lack of transparency and could not be regarded as normal, good and decent practice in a democracy that is supposed to be exemplary.”
While referring to the issue of budgets and finances of the federal legislature, Mr. Obasanjo said the present economic situation that the country has found itself in is the climax of the steady erosion of good financial and economic management which grew from bad to worse in the last six years or so.


According to him, the executive and the legislative arms of government must accept and share responsibility in this regard and that if there will be a redress of the situation as early as possible, the two arms must also bear the responsibility proportionally.
“The two arms ran the affairs of the country unmindful of the rainy day,” he said. “The rainy day is now here. It would not work that the two arms should stand side by side with one arm pulling and without the support of the other one for good and efficient management of the economy.”
The former president argued that the purpose of election into the Legislative Assembly particularly at the national level was to give service to the nation and not for the personal service and interest of members at the expense of the nation which seemed to have been the mentality, psychology, mindset and practice within the National Assembly since the beginning of this present democratic dispensation.
He asked pointedly, “Where is patriotism? Where is commitment? Where is service?”
He stated further, “The beginning of good governance which is the responsibility of all arms and all the tiers of government is openness and transparency.
“It does not matter what else we try to do, as long as one arm of government shrouds its financial administration and management in opaqueness and practices rife with corruption, only very little, if anything at all, can be achieved in putting Nigeria on the path of sustainable and enduring democratic system, development and progress. Governance without transparency will be a mockery of democracy.”
Going more specific, Mr. Obasanjo noted that a situation where our national budget was predicated on $38 per barrel of oil with estimated two million barrels per day and before the budget was presented, the price of oil had gone down to $34 per barrel and now hovering around $30 and the country has no assurance of producing two million barrels and if it could, it would have no assurance of finding market for it, definitely calls for caution.
He added that if production and price projected in the budget stand, the country would have to borrow almost one third of the N6 trillion budget.
He stressed, “Now beginning with the reality of the budget, there is need for sober reflection and sacrifice with innovation at the level of executive and legislative arms of government. The soberness, the sacrifice and seriousness must be patient and apparent.
“It must not be seen and said that those who, as leaders, call for sacrifice from the citizenry are living in obscene opulence. It will not only be insensitive but callously so. It would seem that it is becoming a culture that election into the legislative arm of government at the national level in particular is a licence for financial misconduct and that should not be.
“The National Assembly now has a unique opportunity of presenting a new image of itself. It will help to strengthen, deepen, widen and sustain our democracy.”
Mr. Obasanjo said going by the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, RMAFC is charged with the responsibility of fixing emoluments of the three arms of government: executive, legislature and judiciary.
He said the Commission did its job but that “by different disingenuous ways and devices, the legislature had overturned the recommendation of the Commission and hiked up for themselves that which they are unwilling to spell out in detail, though they would want to defend it by force of arm if necessary. What is that?”
The former president added, “Mr. President of the Senate and Hon. Speaker of the House, you know that your emolument which the Commission had recommended for you takes care of all your legitimate requirements: basic salary, car, housing, staff, constituency allowance.


“Although the constituency allowance is paid to all members of the National Assembly, many of them have no constituency offices which the allowance is partly meant to cater for. And yet other allowances and payments have been added by the National Assembly for the National Assembly members’ emoluments. Surely, strictly speaking, it is unconstitutional.
“There is no valid argument for this except to see it for what it is – law-breaking and impunity by lawmakers. The lawmakers can return to the path of honour, distinguishness, sensitivity and responsibility.
“The National Assembly should have the courage to publish its recurrent budgets for the years 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015. That is what transparency demands.
“With the number of legislators not changing, comparison can be made. Comparisons in emoluments can also be made with countries like Ghana, Kenya, Senegal and even Malaysia and Indonesia who are richer and more developed than we are.”
Mr. Obasanjo recounted that while in office as president, he was threatened with impeachment by the members of the National Assembly for not releasing some money they had appropriated for themselves which were odious and for which there were no incomes to support.
On the plan by the legislature to buy new cars for its committees, the former president said it is unnecessary.
According to him, “The recent issue of cars for legislators would fall into the same category. Whatever name it is disguised as, it is unnecessary and insensitive.
“A pool of a few cars for each Chamber will suffice for any Committee Chairman or members for any specific duty. The waste that has gone into cars, furniture, housing renovation in the past was mind-boggling and these were veritable sources of waste and corruption. That was why they were abolished. Bringing them back is inimical to the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians.”
Mr. Obasanjo expressed hope that the National Assembly would reconsider its plan and do what is right not only in making its own budget transparent but in all matters of financial administration and management including audit of its accounts by external outside auditor from 1999 to date.
“This, if it is done, will bring a new dawn to democracy in Nigeria and a new and better image for the National Assembly and it will surely avoid the Presidency and the National Assembly going into face-off all the time on budgets and financial matters,” he said.

Buhari proposes new laws to combat corruption

President Muhammadu Buhari has requested the National Assembly to consider two executive bills as part of improved legal framework to fight corruption.
The bills are Money Laundering Prevention and Prohibition Bill 2016 and the Criminal Matters Bill 2016.
The bills are believed to be part of the enhanced legal approach to Mr. Buhari’s anti-corruption war.
The letters forwarding the two bills to lawmakers were read by the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, on Wednesday at plenary.
Details of the two bills are unknown at this time.
Meanwhile, the National Assembly on Wednesday continued with deliberations on the 2016 budget with focus on economic diversification and infrastructural development.
Earlier, after the Senate resumed from a closed-door session, Mr. Saraki said the Senators discussed the budget.

President Muhammadu Buhari said Monday in Abuja that poverty, injustice and the lack of job opportunities were mainly responsible for inter-communal and intra-communal conflicts in Nigeria.
Speaking while receiving a delegation from the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, an organization active in the promotion of peace in Nigeria, President Buhari said to achieve enduring peace in the country, greater effort must be made to eradicate poverty and injustice.
The president described ethnic and religious conflicts in parts of the country as outward manifestations of underlying problems of joblessness, injustice and poverty.
On conflicts between farmers and herdsmen, President Buhari said that a plan to map out grazing areas will soon be presented to the Nigerian Governors Forum as a temporary solution to the frequent conflicts until cattle owners are persuaded to adopt other means of rearing their cattle.
Repeated clashes between Fulani herdsmen and farmers have led to thousands of deaths.
On Sunday, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in charge of Vunokilang Police Station in Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa State was killed alongside 30 other people in an attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
The suspected herdsmen raided four villages: Demsare, Wunamokoh, Dikajam and Taboungo in what is believed to be a vengeance mission over an existing feud with farmers in the area.


Several houses and other property in the villages were also burnt in the attack.
The DPO, Okozie Okereofor, a Chief Superintendent of Police, who was deployed to the state about two months ago, was said to have been ambushed when he was leading police officers to the disputed area. He was killed in the eventual shootout with his assailants.
The Police in Adamawa have confirmed the killing of Mr. Okereofor.
“The DPO and his team were attacked while on official duty in the affected villages where he was killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen,” the spokesperson of the Adamawa State Police Command, Othman Abubakar, said.
Mr. Buhari commended the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue for the relative peace that had returned to Plateau State as well as their on-going activity in Southern Kaduna.
He agreed with the centre that dialogue was always preferable to the use of law and order mechanisms and force in the resolution of conflicts.
The Executive Director of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, David Harland, told President Buhari that following their success in facilitating the settlement of the inter-ethnic and inter-religious conflicts in Plateau State, the group had moved to Kaduna State.
He expressed the hope that the techniques used in bringing peace to Plateau State can soon be deployed to deal with the Boko Haram insurgency and other conflicts in Nigeria.
