It seems the Arses still don't get it.
For the kinda ambitions they have, the club will have to spend a lot more.
Barring a serendipitous aligning of the planets, Arsenal cannot expect to be outspent by other teams while at thesame time hemorrhaging talent and still challenge for titles |

ayusco: RVP overrated? blasphemy!
RVP might have his injury issues but compared to Ade he works his ass off, good for deadballs, takes on oppostion defences more etc.
Don't get me wrong Ade was a good player for us but he is the kind of player who shines when things are going smoothly along. when things are going bad he does an invisible man impression. atleast with RVP he fights even if he doesn't score he creates anyways who are the good DM available now. Overrated by Emirati fans. . . I don't think non-Arse fans are under any such illusions. |

debosky: Who meets the definition of a 'marquee talent' if Andrey Arshavin doesn't?
With all due respect, Ade is no superstar nor world class talent. A very unique 'alignment of the planets' happened in 2007/08 enabling him to score 30 goals from 150 chances. Even then, the doubts existed given almost a third of those goals came against statistically the worst team in premiership history. He is a good no doubt and was a useful servant for Arsenal FC, but don't make the mistake of labelling him world class.
If liberating Arsenal from Henry could bring about an improvement like 2007/08 before Dudu's injury (and Ade's refusal to pass to Nick B) ruined it all, Ade's departure is more than welcome given his clearly disruptive effect, especially on the fans' relationship with the team.
Ade was not as good as he was when he came, and very few players arrive at Arsenal FC at the peak of their powers - that is the nature of things at the club. That said, we have clearly talented individuals in our current set up who are very capable of doing what is required to win titles/cups.
All we need is a strategic addition (or two) to bring out the 'greater than the sum of their parts' effect that won us titles in the past.
With regard to our superstars/world talent, I daresay we have achieved that this season - Gallas, Cesc, RVP, Clichy, Sagna are all remaining, with AA23 also in tow, not mentioning the up and coming Nasri, Walcott, Bendtner and others.
Again, we still need the one or two strategic additions to make it all gel, but we are not far off. Well, if you can tell me how many more players have that combo of strength, speed and skill like Adebayor. . . .then I might withdraw my world-class label. Take Ibrahimovic(someone in the mould of Ade), if he is dealt to Barca, will be valued at a minimum of 50 million pounds. The disparity in valuation cannot be defended regardless of how lowly you rank Ade. And Ibro himself has been known to throw a tantrum or two. Talent is talent regardless of the baggage that often comes with it. You will fall into thesame trap as Sharon if you begin to judge talent based on some numerical index. Ade is worth more than his weight in goals as he commands the attention of more than one defender. Its either the talent around him wasn't up to par or they were out of form to take advantage of the mismatches he creates. Be that as it may, it is your assertion that Arsenal have enough talent already to mount a serious challenge that baffles me. It reminds me of Fergie in the mid 90's when he thought he could really have a go at the big spending Europeans with his crop of young English talent, and then a few seasons back with Djemba Djemba, Kleberson and Liam Miller. With players like these, a team is limited to a simple passing game. Without Ade, Arsenal don't have a player that will go past anyone or command the attention of more than one defender on a consistent basis. Arshavin is not going to do it, and Walcott is a write off. Nasri has proved my point Ben Arfa should have been the player bought last season, and RVP is soooo overrated. Finally, I recommend Arsenal pony up for that chappie Fernando at Porto. He would solve all the DM issues. |

debosky: The problem itself is creating chances against the resolute defences, hence the importance of having more attacking players with different characteristics - Rozzi, AA23, Cesc and Nasri all bring different attributes and approaches to our attacking play. With that level of variety I feel we are in a much better position than we were for much of last season.
Coupled with that is the return to fitness of Eduardo, a clinical striker par excellence. With someone like that, even the FEW chances created against the parked bus defences will be utilised to give us goals.
I am not saying it will all be clockwork or that we don't have serious challenges, but I am confident, based on the realities on ground and the opportunity to make the additions we require. So you think a combination of players with different but not marquee talent will see Arsenal through on the attacking front? I think that is a tacit endorsement of Wenger's frugal policies. . . and the result has been trophyless seasons. To compete you need to keep your superstars and world class talent. Losing one without lining up a replacement will leave Arsenal grabbing at coattails. . . AGAIN |
