These donations are all jus a bit arbitrary. We need a settled system that compensates all victims of injustice not just those that catch the governors fancy |
On the day the two teams were dire, but they have more talent than united. |
Finally someone called Fergie's bluff and bloody almost made them pay. I have watched United play at times with four people up top and dare teams in a game of brinkmanship. The london teams blinked and got humiliated by a team they really should beat, at least Spurs and Chelsea should. It took little Basle to show what I suspected. This team is no worldbeater yet. And the good results early on are a product of a more rigorous preseason preparation and kamikaze tactics. Eventually teams will catch up an this team will struggle to at best a third place finish. ![]() |
Beaf:I mean come on. . . The issue isn't the quality of the Nigerian Press. The issue is the incompetence of GEJ and his team. |
I guess I must tender my apologies and try to keep up with what is going on. I still have my reservations about the Abeokuta project, but those interventions on the Federal roads, from the article, sound very impressive. |
I think we are too far gone to be worried about cost to be honest. So long as its not ridiculously exorbitant, I am almost resigned to having a a few bills shaved off the top. There is simply no way to stop it, and any inquiry into the thieving will only see more shaving and more corruption. The best one can hope for is the projects they choose to have done will impact in some way to the widest population possible or address a very pressing need. In that respect, is this defensible? |
I wonder what kind of impact, this kind of project will have in the wider scheme of things. Its been a while since I have been to Abeokuta, but I am willing to wager a horrendous traffic situation isn't one of their most pressing problems. Besides Lagos, I think other SW states, when considering road building should be coordinating and trying to implement inter-state rather than intra-state. That is likely to have a greater economic impact than a walkway within the capital as one poster earlier put it. These kinds of roads should really be left to the local governments. Buttresses my opinion we have to get rid of at least one layer of the lower tiers of power. |
This arrangement still doesn't address the fundamental problem of the Nigerian state: The Federal Government getting involved in things it shouldn't. I envisage the birth of a monstrous bureaucracy at the Finance Ministry trying to monitor the plethora of projects the Federal Government shouldn't have any business with in the first place. i have no doubt on the macro economic level, Okonjo Iweala has all the ingredients for success and our economic statistics will start to perk up. But she herself has to know, it is high time the FG gave up some powers and revenue to the states. I am aware of the usual objections to the corrupt bunch of governors we are saddled with. But they still do a far better job than the FG does at present. Under state hands, for example, a road like Ore-Benin will most likely have been sorted by now, as will have the Lagos Apapa expressway. What we have had instead is a stuttering and certainly criminal effort which have indirectly led and still contribute to the deaths of many Nigerians. So forgive me if I greet this article with a weary skepticism. The changes we seek still seem far away. |
afam4eva: maclatunji:I don't want to ridicule Achebe by calling his fiction pop. It is clearly more sophisticated than that. But I find his writing ''too accessible'' especially when juxtaposed with Soyinka's work. Soyinka's work is multi layered, reveals more and more the farther you explore, and unlike Achebe whose intentions are never far from the surface, demands a lot more of the reader. That is why I prefer Soyinka. |
Finished Yasmina Reza's ''Art'' in a jiffy. A play that was a critical and commercial success, I had been looking forward to reading it but it proved a monumental disappointment. Apparently, a contemplation on the meaning of art and the evolution of a friendship, I found it utterly incompetent on the themes it set out to explore. And worse, I searched in vain for the funny moments as promised and I can't remember one single memorable gag. Nada. There is currently a penchant for plays which satirise middle class life, a sort of in-joke which the largely middle class theater going crowd seem to share. Unless you are privy to this in-joke, I suggest you better give this play and others of its ilk a miss. |
He is beyond useless. Not what we need at all. Nigeria's situation needs more than a few derisive palliative measures. We need fundamental change. Open up NNPC and the other federal agencies to serious scrutiny. Curtail legislative pay. Stop peddling watts up and down like Mallam Suya bulb and give electricity. Do as the governors say and hand over more revenues and responsibilities to the states. And grow some balls and actually employ people that actually know what they are doing. What we have now is just a lot of faffing around and nothing getting done. I rate him minus infinity on all counts. |
Considering how good the Bridesmaids film is, I am sure it must have been recommended already. But if not, make una go watch am ooo. The film is funny as hell. Much better than the very unfunny Hangover (which was so bad I stopped midway). |
As the topic title says, which would you rather have. Higher minimum wages for workers or lower political allowances for elected official? Do state reasons for your position too please. |

Burma Boy by Biyi Bandele. . . The book has some very funny moments for a story about war. About the West African forces enlisted to fight the Japanese in Burma. Its a bit too slight though it ended tragically. |

I sure have missed this place ![]() I think Gov. Amaechi has felt sidelined as the shadow of Fashola has dominated the gubernatorial landscape. And he is right to have the humps as his Lagos counterpart has hugged the limelight. By all knowledgable accounts, the man has done very well, and he deserves some praise. If his precedents in the job are anything to go by, something fruitful will emerge from this committee and it might finally bring him the recognition he deserves. Kudos for the ethnic makeup of the committee as well. |
if you be benin then you must sabi blow big grammar. . . .true? |
