The past 2 days there is a trending story in my country of how 15 years ago a Reverend in one of the big churches here raped a woman who is now married. The victim made a recorded video telling the story of how it happened and posted it on Youtube. Ever since people have taken sides with the victim and Nigerian social media has been on and on condemning the pastor without giving him a fair opportunity to defend himself just because they say he has a not-so-good past. I'm not saying he didn't do it or she is lying, I'm just saying the pastor is a human being and should be given a fair hearing regardless his past. Let's be realistic we all know people really do change. What if he is innocent and someone is just trying to drag him down? There's a lot going on behind the scenes these days yet people still think it's okay to judge and condemn others over the internet without remorse. What's the difference between believing a media story without proof and lynching a "suspected" thief without investigation, which a lot of those calling the Pastor out now have at one time kicked against online.
Where I come from, I and two friends were accused sometime in January 2017 of raping a girl in the next compound and collecting her phones. They weren't sure which of us but they arrested all 3 of us in the house because their informant told them they suspect the rapist lives in my compound just because after the incident that night they saw him walk into the compound. Ofcourse we didn't do it, we were arrested in the most humiliating way and after taking our statements at the station released on bail. Note that those my friends don't stay with me they only came to visit and one of them brought his girlfriend, she was arrested too. To cut the long story short, investigation was done and the real culprit was caught fortunately for us because he left a trace. We were informed by the police and asked to come close the case. No apologies whatsoever only telling us that we can take the accuser to court if we want to for character defamation or whatever the English was and they (the same Police) can help us with the process. My dad being a "Christian" didn't want to drag the matter and asked me and my friends to forgive and forget since God helped them find the real culprit.
The summary of what I'm saying? If we're going to see the whites as perfect and copy their lifestyle let's copy same thing they'll do in a situation like this - which is to give the suspect a fair hearing until proven guilty beyond doubt before casting a stone on them. It's easy, people taking sides should try it. My opinion is based on the fact that I have not seen any solid backing to her claim online, unless there's something I haven't come across yet.

Ever since the news of COZA pastor raping Mrs Dakolu Nigerians have already taking sides with many standing with the alleged raped victim but while it is most likely that many will say she is right we must not let female sentiment to cloud our judgements. Mrs Dakolu is not a holy woman either as her history tells alot of her allegations. If a woman is raped and allows her victim to do it again without a struggle. We must ask if Mrs Dakolu is in her normal senses. Alot of women get involved in sex with guys who are charming only to regret it later because they realised he had other lovers and not just them rather than admit they were outsmarted they turn to rape accusation as a way to protect their sanctity. If the CoZa pastor has many victims they should all United and launch a joint effort to Sue him not use it as an opportunity for defamation. I think more or less this issue is a well planned script to discredit Christianity in Nigeria. We have had several cases against pastors in recent times with private jest to other issues used as a tool to make a bad image of the church. I advise those who think Mrs Dakolu to be raped to tell her to go to court with her evidence not partake in media trial. Sambo Dasuki was accused of diverting funds. Till today Dasuki has not been found guilty. We know how Nigeria works. We should be careful how we approach sensitive issues relating to religion. The accusation against apostle Suleiman has still not gone anywhere. Christians must be wise not to join sides in tearing down the church without proof. Whover thinks he has been hurt must go to court to seek redress and not cause a chaotic noise in the press. Pastor Biodun may be guilty but he deserves a fair hearing. I have been following the alleged rape incident between Mrs Bisola Dakolo, the wife of musician Timi Dakolo, and Pastor Biodun, the Senior Pastor at COZA, where Mrs Dakolo alleged that Pastor Biodun had multiple canal knowledge of her without her consent as a then 17 years old teenager, an incident that allegedly happened some 20 years ago.

I have watched the pronouncements of some social media jurists and popular figures, including some politicians, musicians, influencers and actors, with most pronouncing judgement against the accused (Pastor Biodun) and a few others "standing with the accused".

May I add my voice to this subject...

1. Does Being A Philanderer Makes One A Rapist?

A couple of people, including Mr Timi Dakolo, the husband of Bisola, have accused Pastor Biodun to be a man that engage in inappropriate relationship with several female members of his COZA church, while that remains an unproven allegation, some commentators pronounced the pastor as "guilty" of rape because of his too many "womanising scandals", while some others narrated his philandering days in Ilorin, Kwara state, where he allegedly had multiple romps with several ladies of loosed virtues. While the allegations/testimony may be true, half truth or completely untrue, it still does not help the allegation of Mrs Bisola.

Rape is non-consented sexual relations and it is a criminal offence. Having multiple sexual partners is not a crime under the law irrespective of moral or spiritual opinion.

2. Bisola Dakolo Herself Was Accused of Having Sexual Relations With COZA Clerics

On May 30, a certain female with Instagram handle @elenapipper informed Mr Timi Dakolo that his own wife, Bisola, who incidentally is the accused of Pastor Biodun, was involved in illicit sexual relationship with Pastors of COZA church and some of her choir colleagues. While the claim of Elena remains an allegation, I believe that "2+2" should be put together by social media jurists if their intent is to give social media justice. I am yet to see the response of Timi and Bisola to that allegation and in all honesty, I expect the Dakolos to sue Elena for defamation/libel so as to prove their innocence- just like several social media jurists have challenged Pastor Biodun to do.

3. The Media Is Not The Appropriate Place To Lodge Criminal Complaint

I have said it umpteenth time that the media, be it traditional media or social media, is not a police station to lodge criminal complaints. The traditional media is interested in selling papers while the social media is highly interested in cashing out on trending issues. Popular faces and celebrities are interested in jumping on trending issues so as to stay relevant while influencers are interested in swaying perception. Majority of these commentators and social media jurists aren't interested in vindicating the innocent and to bring the real guilty party to JUSTICE. I heard of a planned protest at COZA Church by some so-called CSOs, but that again is just to sway public opinion and not necessarily see to that JUSTICE is done.

However, the appropriate thing for Bisola Dakolo to do is to first go to the Police station nearest to her, report the case, get her witnesses and other evidence, assist the Police in their investigation and ensure that the accused is charged appropriately to establish his innocence or guilt and get justice, which can only be dispensed by the court.

4. My Position On The Rape Allegation By Bisola Against Pastor Biodun

Rape is a crime against humanity and a robbery of ones dignity, it is a serious crime that should be treated as an offence worse than armed robbery- because the victim is robbed mentally, emotionally and psychologically.

However, rape accusation is one that should be properly lodged at the Police station and investigated by the appropriate police officer, and if found to be true, the perpetrator be punished. But if otherwise, the accuser be punished. As such, I neither agree with the accuser (Bisola) nor the accused (Pastor Biodun) just yet, but proper investigation be done.


Convulsively, we should allow wisdom be our guide in making judgement! May justice be done!
