I shared the info because I thought you might find it useful, I somehow forgot to mention you at the end of my post. What is SE and TC? I know RC stands for Reading Comprehension, but I've never heard of those before.
I'm getting scared right now just reading your (score) breakdown, I hope I'll be able to get a better score than before on the Verbal section and AW.
Have you written the test before?

SE is sentence equivalence and TC is text completion. Wish us all the best! I must kill Verbal and AW in my next attempt. My God pass GRE!!! grin

Has anyone here who has taken the test recently used the GRE® Diagnostic Service for GRE General Test ? I just noticed it this evening.
Thanks for this information. So I just logged into my account to checkout the diagnostic service. Mehn....as much as I hate the GRE exam, the GRE body itself is just awesome! I doff for them!

So I practically failed all my RC questions!!! Terrible.... Just 2/20 right. Gosh! I seem to do well in SE and like 50% in TC. In total for both verbal sections, I got just 17/40 right. The reason I scored 150 was because I seem to get the highest difficulty questions right. Lol.

For quant, I had 17/20 right in first section and 15/20 right in second section. The second section was tougher and I failed the highest difficulty questions.

Helps to know where to improve on for those considering rewriting. I knew I sucked in RCs and its confirmed that I really suck!!!!! grin

Hope yours isn't the 2nd edition?

I had the 2nd edition but someone dropped the link (a few pages back) for the 4th edition.

For those 'still planning to' register for the exams, please do it as soon as possible; register, 'get a test date and keep' it. It's either dates are filling up real quick or dates previously available are currently being cancelled

Official GRE Quant. and Verbal practice booklets. 10mb and 12.5mb for each.

Work towards avoiding minor mistakes in the Quant. section, goodluck as you prepare.
I would add Manhattan 5lb for verbal and Nova for Quant. Helped very much. Download memrise and learn Barron's 800 essential GRE vocab.

The best way to off-set your GRE score is to retake the GRE. While I agree with kaima2015, you need not look back. Prep for the AWA, but NOT at the detriment of the other two. Remember, you can't combine different GRE scores. In my opinion though, you can get it right with the AWA with 1 (or 2 weeks) of focused prep. Ask those who got a 6.0 or 5.5, and you'll see their techniques are fairly similar.

I wish you the best in your applications.
Thanks! I can start with you! You had 5.5! Oya bring tips!

And yes, I am focusing on all sections. Need to improve scores in all sections. God help me.

kaima2015:
@drhopeful...i have been thinking....i can see that you are worried about your AWA score....graduate review committees care less about the AWA when assessing your writing skills than they do about your research/writing samples.

So in view of this....do you have research publications?...thats a strength to supplement your application...also your research skills/experience in material science as said

my two cents....dont rewrite the GRE if you have research publications and research experence...your scores are great
Thanks kaima2015. Yes I am very worried about my AWA score. I don't have research publications and my only research experience is my MSc dissertation. Lol. I have work experience of 7 years in my area of interest.

Too bad, I have already re-registered. It has pushed me back 2 months in starting my applications, but hopefully I can get my apps completed latest mid-Dec. Thanks for caring, I really appreciate.

So I am planning to rewrite the GRE in the hopes of improved scores. I have a question for the verbal smashers.... For learning vocabulary, should I focus on the high-frequency GRE vocab like the Barron's 331 or should I go with the 800 essential words? I am practicing with memrise. Magoosh did not help me much the last time. Thanks.

what is your area of research? you might get through...you should get a faculty member as a research advisor and who would likely sit on the graduate review committee because when shove comes to shove he or she can push your case through...good luck

Thanks Kaima2015. Problem is that my research area is offered in only a few universities. I am targeting those few universities and they all require above average GRE scores.

Got a question for guys in school or that have admission....

When the schools say 'academic LOR', must the person be someone that has lectured you before? Or is one free to get from any other Prof or Dr not necessarily in one's school? I am asking because I finished BSc 10 years ago and all my lecturers are either demised or AWOL. But I have got other Profs from other schools happy and ready to give me LOR.
Please any response?

Great scores! You want to make people like us go hide for somewhere. I give it to you, you're just too motivated. A full-time job and a family, and then scoring well on the GRE? Thumbs up, Ma. We all develop nerves, especially for a test like the GRE. It's how the test is designed.
So, you're not alone.
If you rewrite and achieve better scores, it won't disturb in any way. The schools will use your last reported scores in your admission. But, I want to ask; do you really think a 162 Q isn't good enough to get into a decent PhD program? In my opinion, so far it wasn't an act beyond your control like traffic or ill-health, I think you're better off developing other aspects of the application (see SOP and LORs).
I understand how you feel, the first few days after seeing your scores aren't that lovely. Especially when you feel you should have performed better. It will pass, I promise. Arrange your profile, as it is, and inquire how you stack up in your desired programs.
All the best.
Baddo happyday, stop flattering me. Lol. But thanks really. I guess I just don't want a prof to be iffy about my application. I really can do this PhD and I don't want this yeye test to mar my chances. 162Q can't cover for both bad V and AW. I would not be so worried if I scored a 4 in AW. Ah!!!! But I don't want to rewrite that bloody exam if I don't have to. But there is just no way to tell.
EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by drhopeful: 10:39am On Aug 12, 2016
So I also wrote the GRE and would love to share my experience. First of all, I am very disappointed with my scores. Infact, I have been very depressed since I got my official scores. Granted I am not very good in Verbal/Writing but I believe I can still get decent scores.

I wrote GRE on August 4 in Port Harcourt. I had to travel from Akwa Ibom to Rivers that morning. Left my house at about 5.30am so I could beat all the PH traffic. Got to the venue about 1.5hrs early. Check in started at about 9am and took almost 2 hours.

I finally got to my seat and immediately exam nerves kicked in. Staggered and managed to get on with the issue essay. Wrote for about 20+ mins before I realized I had misread the topic. No time to remedy. I believe I would have scored a 3 here. For the argument, I barely had time to collect my thoughts. I basically ended up asking questions without answers that would weaken or strengthen the argument. Big poo.... I believe I would have scored a 4 here. Finally AW result....3.5 vs 4.5 I was targeting.

I got 3 wicked verbal sections. So tough that I could not tell which was experimental section. Even the TCs and SEs were so convoluted talkless of those long recondite RCs....bloody hell. The RCs were all about american revolution history and arts nonsense, I just could not understand them at all. Anyway, I ended up with an abysmal 150. My target was 155.

I consider myself a fair maths guru but those quant questions, while not so tough, needed more time to solve. I found myself running out of time. Had to guess on some complex questions and move on. I ended up with 162. I was targeting 165.

I was studying on and off for a few months, never really had enough time to be honest. I work full time and still have to care for a husband and child. It should not be an excuse, but its really tough managing a family, working and still having to study.

Special thanks to sirriddy. That guy is so selfless, was never tired of listening to my whinings. Kept encouraging me to push on. May God continue to bless him.

I really salute the likes of nastydamus and babisho! Kudos to you guys for your scores. I envy you both.

I am considering rewriting but very nervous. I am a PhD hopeful; I know my scores are not good enough and will taint the other excellent parts of my application.

I have a question to ask..... I had reported those scores to my schools. Won't it affect my chances even if i rewrite and achieve better scores?

P.S. Pardon my typo/grammatical errors. I am typing from a phone.

Hello brethren,

Please I have a question for current and prospective PhD students. Do you contact potential supervisors/advisors before you make your applications?
