Politics / PDP Crisis Latest : Again, Sheriff Rejects Bot Peace Deal by dridowu: 6:51pm On Aug 30, 2016
By Onyebuchi Ezigbo
The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the former national chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has rejected the latest peace arrangement put forward by the Board of Trustees of the party.

The embattled former chairman of the PDP had earlier rejected previous peace arrangements aimed at reconciling aggrieved members of the party, but instead relied on court injunctions to stall the national convention of the party on two occasions.
In what appeared to be Sheriff’s response to the proposal by the BoT to move the next national convention to Abuja, and to disband all previous convention planning committees, Sheriff’s next in command and deputy national chairman of his group, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, said that the peace proposals fell short of their expectations and as such stand rejected.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by Ojougboh, the aggrieved faction stopped short of accusing the Chairman of the BoT, Senator Walid Jibrin, of constituting a clog in the wheel of the party’s reconciliatory efforts.
“We completely reject the vote of confidence past on the illegal caretaker committee because a committee that has failed twice to successfully organize a convention on two occasion is a failure. Consequently, we can now confidently inform the general public that well meaning Nigerians have been urging Senator Makarfi to resign to save democracy,” he said.

Ojougboh said that what has become a source of irritation in the party is the still-born illegal caretaker committee, adding that the BoT should have advised that the illegality be addressed.
His statement reads: “Having deliberated on the reported outcome of the Board of Trustees meeting of 29th August, 2016 we have resolved to state as follows, that the resolutions feel short of the decision reached with the Dickson/Mantu reconciliation committee.
“The agreement we had is that Sheriff should Chair a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting where Makarfi will attend as a member of the BOT, at the meeting, a Chairman of Convention Committee will be agreed upon, a new Convention Committee setup, including all other sub-committees: Zoning, Finance, Accreditation etc.
“The venue of the Convention will be in Abuja, where a new leadership of the party will emerged, internal democracy will be respected and confidence will return to the party.
“And we had hoped that opportunity will be given where everybody will meet under one umbrella and shake hands and will see the PDP reemerged for the challenges ahead.
“We therefore state as follow:
” We therefore call on his friends and associates and family to advice him to do the needful and resign now to save multiparty Democracy in Nigeria and stop impunity that has been the bone of Internal Democracy.
“That the BOT Chairman, Senator Walid Jubril chairmanship has brought crisis to the Party. In any case his tenure has expired as he has spent more than 10 years as Secretary and Chairman BOT which runs contrary to the Constitution. A Party where we have imminently qualified persons like Senator David Mark, Babangida Aliyu and others cannot be led by unstable individuals controlled by the love for money.
“That the source of irritation in the Party is the still-born illegal caretaker committee and the Board of Trustee should have advised that the illegality be addressed.
“Whereas the National Working Committee had agreed terms with the Reconciliation Committee on numerous occasions but the BOT will go public and made misguided and provocative statements, the leadership of the BOT must immediately be reconstituted to move the Party forward.
“We thank the numerous PDP faithfuls nationwide and Nigerians for their understanding and patience. We make bold to state that until we get it right and check impunity, the Nigerian opposition party won’t perform as required.
“As we move towards reconciliation, PDP should prevent any person or group from hijacking the party. Be rest assured that the PDP will emerge stronger as we note that impunity marred the party’s success in 2015 general elections”.

Politics / Ayade's Political Appointees Hit 1100 This Week As Labour, Others Raise Eyebrow by dridowu: 11:16am On Aug 30, 2016
The number of political appointees in the Cross River State Government will hit about 1,100 this week, causing labour and members of the public to raise eye brows.

The development comes as Governor, Ben Ayade is set to announce additional 300 new appointees, this week.Currently, there are about 800 political appointees in the state, jerked up from previous 98. The appointees include 28 commissioners and numerous special assistants and a host of others.

Governor Ayade, in a news conference last week, explained that “the expansion of government was a deliberate policy to find a way to release whatever government has to every home, so that there is food on the table for every house. If it is not directly to you, it is to your uncle or to your niece. Even when Cross River does not have, we took appointees from about 98 to almost 800 and we have a new list of about 300 people to be appointed which will be announced next week (this week).”
The state’s work force is about 22,000 earning over N4.5 billion as salary every month for both local government and the state civil service, and Ayade had in an earlier briefing disclosed that the local government wage bill is about N2.1 billion, while the state service is about N2.4 billion leaving a deficit of about N2 billion monthly.
Explaining how he is coping with these huge labour force, wage bill and large number of appointees, Ayade said: “As we have our financial challenges…our receipt at all time is below what our salary is… If you don’t understand third world politics or economy, you will never understand leadership… If you look at Keynesian economics or Donald Trump’s model, when things are doing so well, that is when you tighten up. But trust me, I will never owe salary. Any salary we owe is just this short period we are doing staff biometrics which is deliberate because I kept shifting it. You see some people’s names kept reoccurring on pay role yet the person retired many years ago.

“Salary comes first on my list. There is no infrastructure that is better than a human being. I will rather stay and spend four years paying salary, reducing hunger on my people and saying goodbye to politics and never seek rerun than to focus on rerun and projects at the expense of the people. So the expansion of government is to bring more people to the table when times are hard, when investments are low, when the private sectors are almost non-existent. So let me face trouble and create a private sector, build a garment factory, pharmaceutical company, create the rice city, build the poultry, do the gallery. As you do all these, the private sector will begin to strive and you devolve government interest and create the private sector and relief the government by having people employed in those areas.

It is a third world economic model because it operates on sluggish economic steps.”He further noted that the alternative means of employment other than government are very limited, “so government must recognise that the welfare of the people is key.

If I save money to construct a bridge and I don’t have people to go through that bridge what happens? I believe that God will always give me the means to pay and among the less educated in the mind, they could mistake that as a jamboree, no.”
Meanwhile, labour leaders in the state have frowned at the large number of political appointees in the state, saying it is the cause of the state’s huge wage bill.

The State Chairman of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JPSNC), Comrade Thomas Igbang, in a telephone interview with The Guardian said: “If you talk about 700 politicians in the pay role, I think you cannot but say it is high when people are looking at a small government. The government has not employed for a long time and there are several people, who have retired, but they keep saying the figure of civil servant remains stagnant, I doubt that very seriously. This government has brought over 700 politicians into the pay role so if that is the reason for the increment, they should say so because our pay has not been increased, and we are receiving what we were receiving before. People are leaving the service and in pension they don’t get same amount as when they were in service.”
Equally commenting on the large number of appointees, the Vice Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the state, Mr. Cletus Obun, said: “Look at the madness that is going on in the name of appointments. You have the largest appointment and the smallest allocation. We generate less and have more to pay. The man who is crying for bailout is increasing his own salary in terms of emoluments, which he has not even started paying and no employment letters. Is that the way to empower people?

“Rather than creating sufficient ground for people to use their potential to build the economy, we are doing something else. Cross River State is in a sorry state; the governor is running the government deliberately at deficit, employing more than you can pay and cannot even pay yet you are increasing the wage bill. I think it is becoming childish, it is a voodoo economy. It has no basis anywhere in any theory that is known anywhere on earth.”

Politics / Nigeria Tribune Newspaper Apologises To Ezekwesili Over “buhari’s Sack” Report by dridowu: 2:57pm On Aug 24, 2016
The management of African Newspapers of Nigeria, publishers of the Tribune stable, has apologized to a former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, over a report claiming Mrs. Ezekwesili said President Muhammadu Buhari did not deserve his position.
The Sunday Tribune had reported that Mrs. Ezekwesili said Mr. Buhari did not deserve to be president for neglecting the 2000 recruits of the Nigeria Immigration Service, who slept in the open at the entrance of Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja from Friday till Saturday, to protest the reversal of their employment.
Mrs. Ezekwesili denied making the comments.
The apology from the management of Tribune was conveyed to Mrs. Ezekwesili via a letter signed by the managing director and editor in chief of the newspaper, Edward Dickson.
“I write on behalf of the Management to express our deep regrets over the publication in the Sunday Tribune of 21st August, 2016 as captioned above and tender unreserved apology for whatever embarrassment which the publication may have caused your associates and members of your family,” the letter said.
“The publication was just an unfortunate error which was never intended to embarrass anyhow.”
Mrs. Ezekwesili commended the paper for the “uncommon but very professional decision” for not only recanting the story, but also apologizing to her.
She also reacted to comments made by President Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu’s reaction to the false report credited to her.
Tribune had quoted Mr. Shehu as saying that if Mrs. Ezekwesili said the president did not deserve to be in office, she should set up a political party and run against him.
In her reaction, Mrs. Ezekwesili said, “on the basis of the fiction weaved together by a reporter, he let loose one of those now-very-common indecorous and rumor- inspired verbal assault from presidential spokesman, Mallam Garba Shehu”.
“While I thank the newspaper for toeing the path of honour, I hope Mallam Garba Shehu will also be decent enough to admit his error of judgement and tender an unreserved apology for his falsehood and unwarranted attacks at me,” she said.
Mrs. Ezekwesili said it was important not to lose sight of the fate of the Immigration recruits.
“These are Nigerians from across the country,” she said
She said she was drawn to their plight while driving past where they had congregated, and saw among them a friend and Bring Back Our Girls, BBOG, colleague, Aisha Yesufu, who had taken up their cause.
“I spoke with them briefly and I had pleaded with the president to look into their matter,” she said.

Travel / 241 Nigerians 'voluntarily' Return From Libya by dridowu: 8:23am On Aug 24, 2016
Our correspondent gathered that some of the deportees had attempted to cross from Libya to Europe, but they could not accomplish their mission for various reasons.

The Libyan government, in conjunction with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the Nigerian embassy in Libya, deported 241 Nigerians who were stranded in the North African country on Tuesday.

Our correspondent gathered that some of the deportees had attempted to cross from Libya to Europe, but they could not accomplish their mission for various reasons.

The aircraft carrying the returnees touched down at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos at 5:45 PM.

The returnees comprised of 174 males and 67 females, including three children and three infants.

No fewer than three of the returnees came back into Nigeria with health issues and were stretched out of the aircraft into a waiting ambulance with stretchers.

The returnees had entered Libya through different means. While some were happy to return to Nigeria, others wore somber looks.

After going through immigration processes at the airport, they were driven to the cargo terminal of the airport for further processing.

Speaking with journalists at MMIA, the head of the IOM's Lagos office, Nahashon Thuo, said that 241 returnees were brought back from Libya on their own volition.

Mr. Thuo explained that some of the returnees had attempted to cross to Europe from the Northern African country, but failed to achieve their aims, stressing that most of them were arrested by the Libyan immigration service.

He further stated that they were brought by the IOM when they signaled their intention to return home.

Also speaking, Aliyu Sambo, the Director of Relief and Rehabilitation at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), confirmed that the returnees came back to Nigeria on their own volition.

One of the returnees, who was assisted into a NEMA ambulance, told journalists that he was shot in Libya by the man he was working for, adding that it was good he came back.

The returnees on alighting from the Libyan Airlines were directed into a waiting coastal bus that conveyed them to where documentation would take place.

Other agencies on hand to receive the returnees include Nigeria Immigration Service, Port Health from the Federal Ministry of Health, and the National Agency Against Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIPs).

SaharaReporters had reported yesterday that some Nigerians would be returned to the country today.

Politics / NJC Probes Judge Over Secret Meetings With Sheriff by dridowu: 7:22am On Aug 22, 2016
There are strong indications over the weekend that theJudicial Commission (NJC) had commenced a probe into the alleged meetings between the factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and Justice A. M Liman of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt Division. The meetings between Sheriff and Justice Liman were held in Kaduna and Accra, Ghana.

The Council is also probing the judge over alleged circumstances surrounding a judgement Justice Liman delivered in a suit marked, FHC/PH/ CS/524/2016 filed by the Chairman and Secretary, National Caretaker Committee of PDP, Senators Ahmed Makarfi and Ben Obi respectively, against the factional national chairman and secretary of the party, Sheriff and Prof. Wale Oladipo.

The probe was as a result of a petition against the judge filed by Sheriff and submitted to the office of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) who is also the Chairman of the NJC. The petition was entitled “Re: Corrupt practices and breach of the Code of Conduct for judicial officers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by Justice A.M Liman of the Federal High Court in respect of suit no. FHC/PH/CS/524/2016.”

Sheriff, in his petition dated July 4 and personally signed by him, alleged that he, on two different occasions, met with Justice Liman at his (Liman’s) request both in Kaduna and Ghana respectively over the suit in respect of the PDP leadership tussle.

“In June 2016 (sic), I received a call from my Principal Secretary who informed me that Justice Liman was with him in his house and it will be good if I speak with him. I then spoke with Justice Liman who informed me that he would be attending Judges’ Conference in Kaduna and that we should meet in Kaduna concerning the case before him.

“On May 28 (sic), I went to Kaduna to meet Justice Liman and stayed at the ASA Pyramid Hotel. Justice Liman came to meet me in my hotel room with a Senior Judge of the Federal High Court,” Sheriff alleged in his petition.

Sherriff added that Justice Liman told him that he (Justice Liman) was under intense pressure to determine the matter in favour of the Caretaker Committee, although he realised that the justice of the matter was on his side in view of the previous orders of his brother judges in the Lagos Division of the court.

“A few days later, Justice Liman informed me that he would be attending a conference in Ghana and that I should come and see him in Ghana for further discussion. I went to Ghana on June 20 and stayed at Movenpic Hotel in Accra for one night.

“That same day, soon after I checked into the room, Justice Liman came to see me in my room late in the evening. My aide, Shettima Shehu, was with me when Justice Liman arrived and left us soon after greeting the judge who was dressed in track suit. “While in my hotel room in Ghana, the judge reiterated the pressure mounted on him by a PDP chieftain and wondered why the party chieftain was that desperate and he expressed fear of the chieftain,” the petition reads.

In the petition, Sheriff alleged that Justice Liman had, on May 23, among others, granted an ex-parte order in a suit filed by Makarfi and Obi restraining him and other executive members purportedly removed by the National Convention from parading themselves, nor do anything howsoever to negate the decisions reached at the said convention.

Sheriff added that his lawyer had filed a motion to discharge the ex-parte on May 26 and the judge refused to hear the motion within the period of 14 days prescribed by Order 26 rule 12 of the Federal High Court Civil Procedure Rules 2009.

A top source in the judiciary, who spoke with New Telegraph under the condition of anonymity, said that the NJC is concerned about several conflicting judgements coming from different courts and judges over same subject matter, adding that the council is set to look into it, having received some petitions over the same issue.

According to the source, “when such petition comes, it will go straight to the CJN as the chairman of the NJC. On receipt of the petition, the CJN will now send it to the Preliminary Complaint Assessment Committee.

That is the committee that will look into the merit of the petition. If it is meritorious, the committee will now come before the council to tell it that there is a prima facie case, and that the council should set up a committee to investigate the petition.

“It is after, that a committee will be set up and the two parties will be invited to defend themselves. The two parties will be asked to come with their lawyers, but will also be given the option of defending themselves if they want. It is going to be a threemember committee. The chairman of the committee may likely be a Court of Appeal Justice, alongside two other members.

“After the committee might have looked at the submissions of the parties, it will form an opinion. The committee will, in turn, bring their report to the council where a decision will be taken.”

New Telegraph recalls that the council had not too long sacked some judges over alleged gross misconduct and breach of code of conduct for judicial officers. Similarly, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is already prosecuting some senior lawyers over their alleged shady dealings with judges handling their matters.

There have been conflicting judgements in recent time over the PDP leadership tussle. Prominent among the judges who are delivering such judgements in the Federal High Court are Justice Buba of Lagos division, Justice Okon Abang of the Abuja division, Justice Liman and Justice Ibrahim Watila of the Port Harcourt division.

While Justice Buba, on May 12, granted an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the PDP from conducting any election into the offices of the national chairman, secretary and auditor of the party, Justice Liman, on May 23, granted a conflicting order, which okayed the removal of Sheriff as the national chairman of the party.

Politics / Fayose, Others Working To Kill Pdp —babatope by dridowu: 12:26pm On Aug 21, 2016
Chief Ebenezer Babatope is former Minister of Transport, who served as the Director-General of Campaign Organisation of Chief Olabode George for national chairmanship of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the botched convention of the party. He speaks with BOLA BADMUS on his experience and the various factors that were at play, leading to the failed exercise. Excerpts:

Can you relate to us exactly what happened at the aborted national convention?

When we got to Port-Harcourt, we felt we were going for a convention that was to revive PDP. The arena was quite okay. We had discovered that some characters had penetrated the organisation of the convention to the point that by 8:00 p.m., on Tuesday, it was apparent that these dangerous intervening forces had made up their minds to disturb the peace of the PDP and to disturb the forward movement of the party. So, they tampered with the list of delegates in many states. For example, they gave Ogun State four delegates; Oyo PDP three; Osun five delegates, while the Lagos State list was nowhere to be found because they were claiming there was no election in Lagos. They knew that Lagos’ list was heavily dominated by those who wanted Bode George, so they wiped their names out. And it is apparent that if we had had that convention, they would have railroaded a boy, Jimi Agbaje, who had been programmed by some controversial people in the party, into power. Honestly, it was God’s intervention that stopped that diabolical move.

I don’t know who Mr. Jimi Agbaje is. I have nothing against him. By our constitution in the PDP, the young man is not qualified to contest. But some of these elements who are promoting his cause were hell-bent on destroying the progress of this party and ensuring that they destroy our constitution. One of them is a so-called governor of one of the South-West states, Ayo Fayose. He is one of the people destroying the peace of PDP.

Why do you think these people are making these moves?

They came with dangerous propaganda that there must be generational change. What do they mean by generational change? Fayose has been canvassing that all old people in PDP must be pushed aside. Whoever is a good Christian or a good Muslim, who has his senses intact, knows that God will never be involved in any matter that is detrimental to the cause of mankind. God knows what He did by preserving old people and then some people would be young. The blending of young and old makes society to move forward. So, as far as they are concerned, all old people must not have anything to do with governance or administration of PDP.

But beyond that, do you think they have personal agenda by saying they want a particular candidate for the party?

Some people have been saying it, but I don’t want to believe it, that some of them have got vice-presidential ambition. I am a political actor, a political activist trained by one of the greatest leaders in Africa, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. I noted the information, but I don’t want to act on it. But we are going to see how a man who says old men should be wiped out would now want to emerge as vice-president of a country we have served with all our might. I have gone to jail three times in my life and these young men want to create a Republic of young mad men. We would see how they progress in life. God will judge every one of us.

In your view, do these people, as you claimed, think their plan will not be possible with Bode George as chairman?

They don’t want him. They say Bode George was going to disturb their programme. They wanted a nonentity to be chairman, somebody they can dictate to. That is why they brought this boy they called Jimi Agbaje and they want the man called Uche Seondus from the South-South to be the national deputy chairman so that Secondus will be able to now manage their simpleton and robot chairman and push him to anywhere they like. That is what they wanted. They know that Bode George, under no circumstance, will in this world allow injustice to prevail and, therefore, they do not believe in that.

There was nothing they did not say. They were praising everybody at the convention, assuring that there would be freedom, justice, fair-play, that nobody will be debarred and yet they went and produced a register of delegates that destroyed almost all the supporters of Bode George both in the North and in the South, including South-West, even to the ridiculous level that delegates from the southern states were more than delegates in the northern states.

What you are saying now is quite different from what people outside perceive as problem of PDP. It is the opinion of people that Senator Ali Modu Sheriff is the problem, but you are saying it is some young elements in the party.

All of them belong to the Ahmed Makarfi group. But these boys just deviated and threw up this stupid campaign, generational change. Honestly, Nigerians must ask them if it is a crime to be old. On Sheriff, we agreed that the PDP must be left to perform its function as a very effective and mobile force to the APC government. So, Sheriff is out of the way as far as we are concerned.

Are you sure that is real with the conflicting court rulings that are being churned out?

We are sure because eventually PDP will triumph over Sheriff. But we even have a greater problem than Sheriff. What these boys are doing now is a new problem for PDP and which we are going to fight with greater energy. We will not leave the PDP for them. They will leave the PDP for us. But we are going to fight them, it’s a monstrous problem.

If they think with their age, power and money, they have everything, if they think they can triumph over us, they are wasting their time because no matter how great any young man is, he can’t be greater than the older man in experience. No child must toy with experience, status and age; any child that does that will be destroying himself. So, we are waiting for them. We are prepared for war and God Almighty knows that they have already established the very base for war in PDP and we will never allow miscreants, vagabonds to dominate our party and destroy it.

The party has been in the crisis for more than a year now and you have also given the Makarfi Caretaker Committee another one year to manage the affairs of the PDP after which there will be a fresh convention. Do you think the party will have resolved all issues by then?

We are not God who is the only one that knows events of tomorrow. But as of today, we believe Makarfi and his committee will be able to help the party to stabilise. We believe that the committee will learn some lessons never to entrust the destiny of the country in the hands of young men who are only messing around because they have power in their hands. Some of these young men are power-drunk. They have money including Pound Sterling, all kinds of money in their hands. The judgment of majority of PDP members and leaders is that Makarfi is a man who is determined to bring PDP together and we all trust his judgment and wisdom. But like I said, Makarfi must learn sufficient lessons in what is going on now because if he doesn’t learn from what is going on now, we shall all be consumed by the event. We hope that with Makarfi being there for another one year, things are going to stabilise. We will never allow these miscreants who have been misusing power.

To what extent do you see the ruling APC contributing to the crisis rocking the PDP currently as alleged in some quarters?

I will never subscribe to that idea. I will never subscribe to that idea that APC, the ruling party, is contributing to the crisis in the PDP. We, as PDP, as far as the convention is concerned, played into their hands. If the APC wants to divide us, we in the PDP played into their hands. Why did some boys decide to tamper with the delegates’ list? If the police did not intervene by sealing off the convention venue, those mad ambitious young men would have put wrong people in office.

Agbaje came to this party less than two years ago and he wants to be national chairman. When you even take that aside, here is a man who has been in about three political parties beside the PDP. He has been in DPA, AD, and ACN. What an insult?

I do not agree with anybody who says that the APC has anything to do with the crisis. We in the PDP prepared the ground for them to intervene and if they do so, that is their own problem because come 2019, the PDP will have re-organised, we will have refocused our affairs in a way that we will make our comeback to power and rule Nigeria easy.

Press Statement
INEC Recruiting APC members as Ad-Hoc Staff for Edo 2016 Gubernatorial Election – PDP
The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Edo State of recruiting All Progressive Congress (APC) loyalist as Ad-Hoc staff ahead of the forthcoming 2016 Edo State Gubernatorial election.
The Party raised the alarm on Saturday August 20, 2016 in a press statement by its Chief Spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye saying that there is a video evidence exposing INEC officials in Edo state of compromising the outcome of the gubernatorial election before the scheduled Saturday, September 10, 2016 poll.
“We have once again uncovered another plot by the Electoral umpire in Edo State to rig the Gubernatorial election in favour of the government in Power in the state. There are clear evidence available to us showing how INEC officials are recruiting APC members as Ad-Hoc staff to rig the election for the APC candidate in the Saturday, September 10, 2016 governorship election in the State” Prince Adeyeye said.

The PDP Spokesman warned that the Party will not tolerate any act of sabotage and advised the electoral umpire to recruit neutral and credible Nigerians without partisan interest as Ah-Hoc staff to maintain their neutrality in the process.
“We will not accept anything short of free, fair and credible process leading to the Saturday, September 10, Gubernatorial poll in Edo State. We wish to assure INEC and the APC of our cooperation for a successful election but will not accept an election that is already compromised before the actual poll”
The Party concluded that INEC should avoid inconclusive election in Edo State and put everything together for a hitch free poll.
Signed:
Prince Dayo Adeyeye

PDP should provide the video evidence to save our democracy or better still they should keep mute forever if they have nothing to say.

Culture / Ooni To Tour Europe, Promote Yoruba Culture by dridowu: 6:44pm On Aug 20, 2016
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Babatunde Adeyeye Ogunwusi shall sometime in October, 2016, tour major cities across Europe in an attempt to promote Yoruba culture and unify children of the race.

Organisers of the tour, African Cultural Awards, said the entire project, apart from bringing the Yoruba all over Europe together, would also help protect many of its cultural heritage from going extinct especially in that part of the world.

Speaking at a news briefing in Lagos, President of the group, Mr. Adeyanju Toyin, said there were many Yorubas living in Europe who have lost touch with their origin, hence the need to reconnect them with their roots and save them from the loss of identity.

“The main purpose of initiating this tour was to help the Yoruba spread all across Europe trace their origin. Over the years, AFRICULRA has gained recognition for celebrating culture within African communities in Europe and America.

“This year we are taking the Ooni to Germany, Netherlands, Austria and Hungary to meet with the Yoruba people and encourage them on why they must continue to embrace their culture regardless of the society they now find themselves.

“During the visit, His Imperial Majesty would confer awards on eminent sons and daughters of the Yoruba race and others,” he said.

ABUJA, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government has offered 24 Nigerian students scholarship awards to pursue various degree programs in China, as the two countries seek to enhance educational exchanges and cooperation.

The scholarship is part of the China-Nigeria Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA).

Qin Jian, charge d'affaires of the Embassy of China in Nigeria, said at a pre-departure ceremony held for the beneficiaries in Abuja that education is one of the important areas of cooperation between the two countries.

"It is not only a demonstration of the close people-to-people exchanges between China and Nigeria, but also a great inspiration for deepening our bilateral exchange and cooperation in educational field in the future," Qin said late Thursday.

He urged the awardees to seize the opportunity to study hard while getting to know China well and enhance friendship.

"In an environment of different language, culture and life in China, I hope you will overcome any difficulties and challenges with courage, make full use of time, acquire professional knowledge, and strive for excellent results so as to live up to the expectations of your parents and your mother country," he added.

Nigeria's Permanent Secretary for Information Ayotunde Adesugba expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for extending another scholarship opportunity to excellent Nigerian students this year.

She said the consideration was well-appreciated by the government and people of the West African country.

Crime / Nigerian Jailed 10years For Drug Peddling In Bangalore, India by dridowu: 10:12am On Aug 19, 2016
In what is being seen as a strong message to about 21 foreign nationals earlier arrested for peddling drugs, a district judge in Dharwad awarded a 10-year jail term and imposed Rs 1 lakh fine on 32-year-old Arthur Joseph, a Nigerian who was first arrested and put behind bars by Vidhya Giri police in January 2013 for supplying drugs.

Police had caught the accused red-handed in his rented house at Sattur layout with large quantities of various drugs. Soon, a chargesheet was framed and a trial had been initiated two years ago.

"If drug peddlers are convicted, then there will be some control over the drug mafia," a police officer said.

Recently, in Bengaluru, former model Darshitmita Gowda, 26, was arrested under various sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS).

According to NCB officers, she was a member of a drug peddling group that catered to college students and working professionals in Bengaluru, Mangaluru and Goa.

The model, a regular at major fashion events, is the fifth person to be arrested in connection with the case, the investigation into which began after the NCB, on November 30, 2015, raided a posh apartment in RT Nagar. During the raid, 110 g of cocaine, 19 g of hashish, 1.2 g of MDMA and one LSD blot were seized.

In the last three years, 21 foreign nationals, 16 of them Nigerian, have been booked under the NDPS Act; some of them have been released on bail. Sources said some of the released members may have returned to their old drug-peddling ways.

Sources said cocaine is the 'drug of the elite', in India, it is supplied to five-star hotel clients and students from well-off families. However, common drugs like ganja, brown sugar, opium, ketamine and hashish are supplied those from middle-class backgrounds. Experts say that in Bengaluru, the supply of cocaine is comparatively low.

But the city is an important transit point for drug suppliers since the security at Delhi and Chennai Airports is higher. Peddlers are said to smuggle drugs from BIAL to other countries by concealing them in make-up boxes and footwear soles. Customs and immigration authorities have trapped a number of peddlers and courier agencies for possessing banned drugs.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to Nigeria and Saudi Arabia next week to discuss regional issues, the State Department announced Thursday.

Kerry will first go to Nigeria and meet with President Muhammadu Buhari to discuss the threat of terror group Boko Haram, spokesman John Kirby said.

Boko Haram, the group responsible for the kidnapping of nearly 300 girls from a school in Chibok in 2014, has killed at least 20,000 people in its 7-year uprising against the Nigerian government. It surpassed Islamic State in 2014 to become the world's deadliest terrorist group, according to the 2015 Global Terrorism Index, published by the Institute for Economics and Peace.

Kerry and Buhari also will discuss Nigeria's economy and human rights issues.

Secretary Kerry then will travel on to Saudi Arabia where he will meet with Saudi and other Gulf state leaders to discuss the ongoing conflict in Yemen, Kirby said.

Foreign Affairs / State Department Sought Land Deal With Nigerian Firm Tied To Clinton Foundation by dridowu: 7:26am On Aug 18, 2016
EXCLUSIVE: Shortly after Hillary Clinton left the Obama administration, the State Department quietly took steps to purchase real estate in Nigeria from a firm whose parent company is owned by a major donor to the Clinton Foundation, records obtained by Fox News show.
On March 20, 2013, William P. Franklin, an “international realty specialist” at the State Department, emailed Mary E. Davis, an American diplomat stationed in Africa, instructing her to “put on Post letterhead” an “expression of interest” by the department in purchasing property at Eko Atlantic, a massive real estate development off the coast of Lagos. Franklin further instructed that the signed letter was to be “delivered to Ronald Chagoury.”

The draft letter, also obtained by Fox News, was undated and addressed to Chagoury care of his firm South Energyx Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of the larger Chagoury Group that is spearheading the Eko Atlantic real estate venture. The State Department letter sought, among other things, to confirm that the department could proceed with “acquisition of the real property…[at] the asking price of $1,250 per square meter.”

Overtures to real estate developers from State Department officials scouting locations for embassies, consulates and other diplomatic facilities would ordinarily not arouse interest. But in this case, the budding transaction – never completed, the department now says – raised eyebrows because Ronald Chagoury is the brother and business partner, in the Chagoury Group, of Gilbert Chagoury, a Lebanese-born businessman whom federal records show has donated between $1 and $5 million to the Clinton Foundation.

Indeed, Gilbert Chagoury’s friendship with the Clintons can be traced back to the Clinton presidency. In the mid-1990s, Chagoury donated nearly $500,000 to a voter-registration drive designed to help Democratic candidates, attended a White House dinner for premium donors, and met with high-ranking officials in the Clinton White House – including Susan Rice, now President Obama’s national security adviser – who were shaping U.S. policy toward Nigeria.

More recently, the Chagourys’ close ties to the Clintons generated headlines when a separate series of emails from 2009 – between Doug Band, an aide to former President Clinton and Huma Abedin, an aide to Secretary Clinton – revealed the eagerness of the State Department to oblige a request for Chagoury to be granted access to senior officials working on Lebanon.

The State Department’s outreach to the Chagoury family, looking to buy property from the brothers, came less than a month after former President Clinton himself toured the Eko Atlantic project – for the second time. The first occasion was the ground breaking, in 2009, in which the former president participated. By all accounts, Eko Atlantic represents a staggeringly ambitious undertaking: the dredging of millions of tons of sand from the sea floor off Victoria Island and the creation of an estimated 3.5 square miles of new land, on which the Chagourys aim to establish what they call a “21st century city … for residential, commercial, financial and tourist development.”

Mr. Clinton toured the Eko Atlantic site for the second time on February 21, 2013 – twenty days after his wife left the State Department – to celebrate the Chagourys’ reclamation of 5 million square meters of land, a critical juncture in the project.

Smiling and animated, Mr. Clinton was photographed conferring with Gilbert Chagoury and Jeffrey J. Hawkins, the consul general for the State Department in Nigeria. Twenty-seven days later, when William P. Franklin would order aides to begin exploring the acquisition of land from South Energyx, the Chagoury-owned company, Hawkins would be one of four State Department officials copied on Franklin’s email.

“A month after Bill Clinton visits a Gilbert and Ronald Chagoury-run land project in Nigeria, the U.S. State Department wants to buy the same land,” said David N. Bossie, president of Citizens United, the conservative advocacy group whose litigation against the State Department pried loose the Franklin email and accompanying letter. “Who could be so lucky? A major donor to the Clinton Foundation, that’s who.”

Queried by Fox News about the matter, the State Department said its officials had “prioritized” the search for a new consulate location in Lagos back in 2011 – when Mrs. Clinton was secretary of state – and that an “independent international real estate firm” had identified Eko Atlantic as a potential site the following year.

“Our site search process … is managed by career real estate professionals in the Bureau of Overseas Building Operations, with input from independent real estate firms and other department stakeholders,” said Elizabeth Trudeau, a State Department spokeswoman, at a briefing for reporters on Monday. “The department has had conversations with multiple property owners and their representatives about the possibility of acquiring property for a new consulate in Lagos.” Trudeau could not explain why a “prioritized” mission had dragged on for five years without success, noting only that “acquiring property that’s appropriate” for a diplomatic facility can be “a long process.” Asked if Secretary Clinton had been aware of her department’s identification of the Chagoury-owned land as a potential site for a consulate, Trudeau replied: “I’m not aware she was.”

The Clinton campaign did not respond to a request for comment. Mark Corallo, a Washington-based spokesman for Gilbert Chagoury, said in a statement that given the project’s “state-of-the-art urban design,” including advanced telecommunications and security features, “it should come as no surprise that the United States government and other governments from around the world are considering Eko Atlantic as a new opportunity for locating their offices that operate in Lagos.”

John Bolton, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and Fox News contributor, said the entire series of events involving the Clintons and the Chagourys appeared, at a minimum, poorly handled to insulate Secretary Clinton from conflict of interest charges.

“The impression left is that there’s favoritism involved,” Bolton said. “And it’s just very unusual in State Department real estate and housing transactions overseas to have this kind of focus on someone with such clear financial connections to even the departed secretary of state. Normally, there’s much more competitive activity involved, [of] which we haven’t seen any evidence from the State Department.” Experts agreed the March 2013 email from William P. Franklin to Mary E. Davis, triggering the State Department’s letter to Ronald Chagoury for a possible real estate transaction, would likely have formed only one set of documents in a longer trail that would have dated back to 2012 – the year the State Department said Eko Atlantic had been identified as a potential site for a new consulate.

Such a trail would presumably include internal correspondence addressing the suitability of the Eko Atlantic site and, perhaps, flagging the potential conflict of interest that could be cited, given the longstanding ties between the Clintons and the Chagourys.

But Citizens United said no other documents on the consulate-scouting effort were turned over by the State Department. The group filed its initial Freedom of Information Act request with the State Department for records relating to Gilbert Chagoury back in 2014, and, receiving no reply, filed suit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in April 2015.

Politics / PDP Will Never Know Peace, I Placed Curse On Party – Aggrieved Politician by dridowu: 3:51pm On Aug 17, 2016
ENUGU – AN Enugu based politician, Mr. Charles Chukwunonso Odo has attributed the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to a curse he placed on the party.

Odo, who had vowed that the PDP would know no peace, told journalists in Enugu yesterday that he was defrauded by the party in Enugu State.

He declared that consequently, he placed a curse on the party after a 7-day fasting, during which he poured out his heart to God in tears.

According to him, “I want to declare boldly today that the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is not ordinary. I placed a curse on the party five years ago owing to a grave injustice meted out on me.

“In the 2011, I had joined the race for the councillorship position in Ogbodu-Aba ward, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

“The then chairman of the PDP in Udenu Local Government, Mr. Fabian Ugwu, had encouraged us to buy forms, promising that we would be treated fairly. I was the first person in Enugu State to purchase the form.”

Odo, a Catechist of the Roman Catholic Church in Nsukka, added that “it later turned out that there was no election at all. They collected my money, put it in their pocket but never held any election. “I made several efforts by appealing to the conscience of the powers that be in the party to right the wrongs done to me but they refused. So, having exhausted all avenues, I decided to take the matter to God’s court.

“I went into fasting for seven days where I poured out my heart to God. I placed a curse on the PDP and prayed God to sweep the party away with crisis. I prayed God to destroy the PDP. I am very happy today that the hour has come. Now, it is happening.

“After the prayer, I resigned from active party politics because I saw PDP as a gathering of unjust people. Now, my prayer has been answered. I want to make it clear that I will not lift the curse until they come to me and apologize.”
