Peoples Democratic Party has called for the redeployment of the Anambra State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Chukwuemeka Onukaogu, ahead of the November 16 governorship election. The Anambra State Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Ken Emeakayi, made the call in Awka on Wednesday during the presentation of voters’ register to political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission. Emeakayi’s call came while questioning the decision of INEC not to give a copy of the voter register to PDP because of the pending resolution of the identity of the party’s governorship candidate. He alleged that the REC was working for a faction of the PDP, whose motive, he said, was to paralyse the party so that the All Progressives Grand Alliance could win the election Emeakayi refused to withdraw his allegation even after INEC’s National Commissioner, Chief Lawrence Nwurukwu, asked him to do so. “I won’t withdraw it. I have written him (Onukaogu) and he has my letter,” Emeakayi said. The situation soon afterwards degenerated into a shouting match as Emeakayi and the other factional chairman of PDP, Mr. Ejike Oguebego, struggled to collect the PDP’s copy of the voter register. INEC eventually gave out copies of the register to Emeakayi and Oguebego, after Nwurukwu conferred with Onukaogu and resolved that “after all, the voter register is a public document.” INEC’s Director of Voter Registration, Mr. Emmanuel Akem, had disclosed that during the last clean-up and optimisation of the voter register in the state, the state INEC came up with a final voter population figure of 1,784,536 voters in the state. He said women with 900,701 voters constitute 50.5 per cent of the voter while male voters were made up of the remaining 49.5 per cent. Akem said young people within the age range of 18 to 35 made up 52 per cent of the voters, while students, businessmen and traders added up to one million of the voters. The Resident Electoral Commissioner, said with the completion of a valid and error-free voter register, INEC was set to conduct a hitch-free election. Origin |
BY KENNETH EHIGIATOR LAGOS— Unless the Federal Government urgently intervenes to fly Mrs Quinneth Owolabi abroad for treatment, she would have her toes and fingers amputated due to gangrene infection. Mrs Owolabi is a surviving cabin crew on the ill-fated Associated Airlines plane that crashed in Lagos two weeks ago. But for her husband’s resistance, the amputation would have been done yesterday or today at Nigerian Air Force, NAF, base hospital in Ikeja, where she had been hospitalised since the crash. Mrs. Owolabi survived the crash alongside six others, although two of the survivors later died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH. Vanguard gathered, yesterday, that the husband of the victim was making frantic efforts to reach the Federal Government for his wife to be flown abroad for treatment to stave off the amputation, especially as the government was said to be responsible for her treatment thus far. Efforts to reach him proved futile as his mobile phones remained switched off yesterday and it was also not possible to speak with the medical team at the hospital as movements in the victim’s ward was restricted by military personnel. National President of Nigerian Airlines Cabin Crew Association, NACCA, Mr. Charles Onuoha, who confirmed the development, appealed to the Federal Government to urgently come to the rescue of the crash victim. According to him, Owolabi’s 10 toes and the five fingers of the left hand have been marked for amputation because of the infection that had set in. He said: “We are calling for referral for overseas treatment, a post-trauma stress assessment and de-briefing for Mrs Quinneth Owolabi, and her colleague, Miss Toyin Samson, currently on admission at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, Lagos. “We are appealing for government’s intervention because that is the only thing that can stop this amputation.” Onuoha also called on the Federal Government to beam its searchlight on the regulation of the aviation sector to stop the frequent crashes and deaths of cabin crew that had trailed the industry in the last 10 years. Onuoha said though Toyin Samson’s case had been stabilised at LASUTH, she needed further medical attention overseas. He noted that post-trauma stress assessment and de-briefing were a necessity for crash and hijack victims, and lamented the attitude of the management of Associated Airlines to the plight of the two cabin crew since the crash. LAGOS— LagosState Po-lice Command, yesterday, paraded a 40-year-old man, Adeyemi Stephen Akintolure, a suspected fake medical doctor, who claimed to be a staff of Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, with card No. 13541, identifying him as a surgeon and gynaecologist. The fake medical doctor was also said to have fraudulently obtained N500,000 from one Joy Umosekhaimhe of 2, Adesanya Close, Ifeko-Gbagada. Akintolure, who said he uses the wife’s car as a mobile clinic, said the money in question was borrowed from Umosekhaimhe, adding “actually, it was not N500,000. It was N260,000 she lent me to use for my brother’s ailment. He said he is from OndoState, studied Marketing at ObafemiAwolowoUniversity, Ife, as a part-time student and graduated in 1997. According to Akintolure, “I have not treated more than 10 people. I just treat them for malaria and typhoid and I also give injections too because of my experience at RivicHospital at Akure.” When asked how he got the identity card, he said he got it from a business centre and that the computer operator signed it for him. He said that he charges between N3,000 and N4,000 per patient, adding that his wife was not aware of his trade. Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ngozi Braide, said she received a petition at the area H Police Command Headquarters, Ogudu, on July 19, that one Adeyemi Stephen Akintolure obtained N500,000 from one Joy Umosekhaimhe. Braide said that a letter was written to LUTH on July 23 to authenticate Akintolure claims of being a staff. She said: “On October 10, LUTH replied that the suspect is not an employee of the hospital and was not issued the identity card. “In view of the revelation, the suspect confessed that he is not a medical doctor, but has been practising for about four years, using his wife’s vehicle as a mobile clinic.” She said his house and vehicle were searched and drugs, injections, syringes and laboratory coat were recovered. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/10/police-nab-fake-luth-doctor/#sthash.X5LnnkPB.dpuf |

THE Founder of the Mental Health Foundation, Dr Emmanuel Owoyemi, said on Thursday that 64 million Nigerians had one form of mental illness or the other. Owoyemi, who disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, on the sideline of a forum to mark the 2013 World Mental Health Day, attributed the situation to the absence of a mental health policy in the country. The forum had the theme: “Mental Health and Older Adults“. “Sixty four million Nigerians today are going through one form of mental illness or the other because everything that would cause mental illness is on the increase in Nigeria. “Poverty is on the increase, hopelessness is on the increase, insecurity is on the increase. There is so much panic at heart, anxiety, high level depression. “And also, there is no mental health policy in Nigeria right now; the National Assembly has been delaying in passing the Mental Health Bill. “None of the psychiatric hospitals in Nigeria today has up to 1000 beds and we have over 160 million people. “We have about 150 psychiatrists; we have 34 neuro-surgeons in the whole country, meaning that, one point something million Nigerians is to one psychiatrist. “How many people can one psychiatrist attend to within the 1.2 million or 1.3 million? “So, we are not doing enough. The human capital is not there, the facility is not there, and yet everything that could cause mental illness is on the increase in Nigeria.“ The World Federation of Mental Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), set aside October 10 every year to raise awareness on mental health issues across the world. Owoyemi urged the National Assembly to ensure the speedy passage of the Mental Health Bill to reduce high rate of mental cases. “We need a mental health bill, a national policy for mental health; that is where to start from. “There must be law; there must be legal framework to work with; there must be policy. That bill is what will help us to be able to do every other thing. “If we say, let’s start putting facilities, structures, systems in place, it is the bill that will give us the legal framework to do all that. “So, if the bill is not passed nothing else can be done, even to budget for mental health adequately, we need a bill that guides everything we do.” Source |

Present at the rally were eminent lawyer, Chief Afe Babalola, former Ekiti State Governor, Niyi Adebayo, Edo state Governor, Adams Oshiomhole and Rauf Aregbesola of the state of Osun. Governor Fayemi speaking at the rally today Some of the leaders present, who also included senators and House of Representatives members from the state, poured encomiums on the governor, who they said had transformed Ekiti. In a speech on the occasion, Fayemi pledged to work harder in the remaining one year, in a manner that every Ekiti resident would feel the impact of the administration. He appealed to opposition parties as well as disgruntled members of the APC, his party, to “sheath their sword’’ and team up with him to achieve his goals for the state. “There is more to be delivered under my administration but all of these can only be achieved under a peaceful atmosphere. “As far as I am concerned, I have sworn not to be distracted but remain focused.” Fayemi was sworn-in on 16 October 2010, following an Appeal Court judgement in Ilorin, which directed former Gov. Segun Oni of the PDP to vacate office. Source |
