Foreign Affairs › Saudi Arabia: 4 Men Get 10-year Jail, 2000 Lashes For Public Dancing by dridowu(op):
A Saudi court has sentenced four men to up to 10 years in prison and 2,000 lashes for dancing “naked” in public, media reported on Thursday.
In a video posted on YouTube, several men appear dancing atop a vehicle in the ultra-conservative province of Qassim. None seemed naked.
The court in Buraydah, Qassim’s provincial capital, sentenced one defendant to 10 years in prison and 2,000 lashes, and another to seven years in prison and 1,200 lashes, Al-Sharq newspaper reported in what media have dubbed the “naked dancing” case.
Their two companions were jailed for three years and sentenced to 500 lashes each, it said.
The four were charged with “dancing on a vehicle in public and posting a video online, encouraging vice, defying norms of the society and violating public morals,” according to Al-Sharq.
Two of them were identified as security officials.
Saudi Arabia applies a strict version of Islamic shariah law that imposes many social restrictions and bans public entertainment

17 die in ghastly auto-crash print

Stephen Oni/Ilorin
Seventeen people have been reported dead in an accident early today on Ilorin-Jebba Expressway,Kwara state, central Nigeria.
Ten other persons were injured.
The auto crash involved a DAF Trailer truck with registration number XD 762 KNT and two Toyota buses with registration numbers TAK 113 XA and XC 185 NSK.
The accident was said to have happened at Peke village, Kilometre 16 New Jebba Road, at the exact spot where the expressway terminates, at about 3.30 am, when the truck rammed into the commercial buses.
According to some of the survivors of the accident, the two buses, which carried 19 passengers each, were going to Katsina from Lagos, while the truck was heading towards Lagos.
The sector commander of the FRSC in Kwara state, Mrs. Mary Wakawa, said the corpses of the deceased had been deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, UITH.
She added that two victims with severe injuries had been taken to Sobi Specialist Hospital,Ilorin, while others with minor injuries were said to be receiving treatment at undisclosed private hospitals.
Wakawa, who blamed the accident on the attitude of most drivers in the country, decried night travelling, saying it is dangerous, with visibility poor, and emergency service, almost impossible.
According to her, the auto crash may have been caused by fatigue leading to sleep on the part of the truck driver.
Besides, she said that assistance would also be difficult to get at night.
