1. Most serious universities in Nigeria will not allow you to change. You will graduate with what you brought in with your WAEC or NECO SSC.

2. Even if your university allows it, the process may be tiresome.

3. Change it after graduation if you have a good reason for doing so; but if you want to use it to cover your track, just note that there is an end to every road.

I once changed my surname. Initially, Ife didn't allow me to do it while I was there as an undergraduate. I proceeded to Ibadan for a Master's degree and wished to change it then but they also said no. However after graduation, I changed it with an affidavit and publication in a national daily. I've been enjoying myself since then. Even if I had to go back to those universities for any higher study, I would be registered with my current surname, they would not raise any issue. You just have to be honest and consistent.

I think Africa isn't doing well to preserve their origin and history. That's why most Nigerian tribes up till now can't say their origin. Some say they dropped from heaven, some other say they came from Israel, some say they came from Mecca, while some scientific opinion believe everyone came from Africa.

The connection comes from the Atlantic slave trade, a sizable proportion of Afro Brazilians are of Yoruba descent. A lot of Yorubas and Africans generally don't think about their culture that much enough to care about their origins.
