Bigleaf1006: That's what I was driving at. Rental business model isn't entirely bad and it's proven to work often times, I even know a company that rents out about 1500 cars.
Asides mechanical issues to the old cars we all use here and considering our peculiar environment which can be overcome by a sane, tactful, honest and hard-working mind. What i think the major impediment to wide range successes in this business is the wrong mindset many of us- partners and drivers bring into the trade.
Everyone by default will instinctually seek ways to exploit a system to their advantage if such opportunities arise. Many of us see e hailing as a gold Rush, others see it as a major means of livelihood, others are downright criminals.
The bottom line is many of us have the wrong attitude and are absolutely bad business people.

You will spend more on the maintenance of a civic and at the end the civic has no second hand value. People will ask what are we doing wrong in this business. This is the same guy that gave out his tokunbo car for uber and they person turn it into yellow cab in two days.. Smh ..

Bigleaf1006: With the contemporary e hailing business model in Nigeria. You are partially right. However I feel many of us are doing it the wrong way.
There are also car rental companies abroad that people use for e hailing and it works but here the reverse seems to be the case.

mrjaydee: I might be wrong, but I think the original plan for ehailing is to drive (you own the car) at your leisure time and make extra cash.
The only way to "enjoy" this uber buisness is if you own the car and you drive it yourself. There is this peace that comes with it. I have been fortunate to drive my own car and I tell you its rewarding cos 1. No pressure of 25k weekly remittance 2. You drive the car with care cos it's your own 3. You go online when you need money or bored I can go on and on.
I dont think "in the abroad" they operate the way we do which is to give the car out for rental. I stand corrected I'm speaking from my own experience as a driver for a year plus on uber/taxify.
P.S Corrolla is not hyped, its underrated! In the USA , since I speak facts only... in my state and I assume it applies for other states too ... there is a company conjunction with uber called GETAROUND .This company leases out cars for uber on weekly base. I think am not sure exactly the weekly lease is , I think it is $250 a week for uber... A very good friend of mine uses them.. He tends to use them more often when his personal car is at the shop . So he goes through uber to get that rate of $250 rental .. He said the company leases 700 cars weekly for uber .. He said some people don't want to deal with using their own cars and putting high miles ,so they lease from the company for a week.. Others have car issues, and while their cars at the shop they lease from the company.. Keep in mind Yankee mechanics are not cheap at all ..so people prefer to just lease for uber.. But 700 cars weekly that is a lot... |

Bigleaf1006: I heard that hiring a truck from the port to anywhere in Lagos goes for as high as 800k presently? I was wowed I don't get paid enough for my service ....but make I help others out there... Depending on the season or how busy it gets at the port.. If you have a container to haul from the port .. It can cost 100k to 200k and about 500k in xmas or high season.. This quote is for short distance that allows you just to offload your goods..... anything further than that could be higher ...... |

ofime123: That very correct I have done this ehailing for a year now and I can say. That is okay if you are driving yourself.
If I wanted to invest 3 or 4 cars in this business I will have done that long ago. Haven said that am wotking towards going into haulaging next year. I just hope this pandemic shit is over as soon as possible.
I will I will be starting with one truck that can covey 20ft CONTAINER. AND strickly within lagos. This is what one of my inlaw is doing for 4 years now and his cashing out big time.
So I will like us to also look into this line of investment. Because breaking even with ehailing do not seem possible. Goodluck with haulaging business.... You can't even manage small cars or the stress of ehailing, so nay haulage business you want do ? So you to want to walk before you can crawl .....you are going from fry pan to fire to a bigger fry pan to bigger fire lol.....my brother my brother, smh .. Have done haulage business years ago early 2000. I was into Mack trucks ,tipper to be exact .. Tough business very tough ... you cant even the maintain small cars , so haulage trucks you want manage.... God bless your soul ...... You think uber drivers are bad , truck drivers will show things that even the devil will be surprise. God have mercy... The sh*t I read and hear on this forum.. I think I will soon retire from posting on nairaland and mind my business... I am not getting paid for this... PS .. You want to start " BIG" you don't know what your in-laws has gone through to be doing fine in the business.. There pass experience in other stressful business has made them to be successful in haulage business.. You can't even manage three or two cars for uber lol

ofime123: The cash flow aspect is the more reason I don't think of leaving transport business. But I don't just like the ehailing is structure.
Note. There is good money in ehailing but I don't just feel like investing huge money in it. I prefer monitoring one truck than to monitor 4cars and driver wahala. And you make more money in haulage than ehailing. That my opinion though Same for me too.. But haulage business can be tough.. Keep in mind in all business the bigger the reward = bigger risk ....... |

Bigleaf1006: Every business has got it's peculiarities, same haulage that your inlaw is doing well at is same others have lost out, same ehailing many are complaining about is same others are doing well at with multiple cars.
Transportation business in naija is still one of the best passive income earner out there, even people managing okada or Keke still makes money.
You are better off in e hailing fleet business if you have other sources of income like a business or even paid employment. It shouldn't be your only source of income even with say 3 cars. The key thing is the cash flow it avails you and trust me ,there ain't too many businesses out there that guarantee that
P S* if properly managed of course!!

BAZ001: I just went of Nairaland for 4days and it's been struggling to catch up with gists here. From More Black Americans die than white Americans To Trump and Obama , Then footba - fergie and wenger (Liverpool / man utd ), Crude oil price (Brent oil or Texas ) Then Corolla and civic Different topic on this thread, I begin to wonder and surprised at some people IQ and level of intelligence. This lockdown has brought out the best in some people ( They shouldn't be driving uber , they should be in CBN,NNPC, health sectors & top management running affairs of Nigeria ) people wasting away their talents.

I had so much success with civic than any other cars. It is just unbelievable parts were cheap and suspension are very strong .....I gave out a tokunbo civic to one of my drivers .... 8 months and counting no issue.. The cars gets good fuel mileage, the driver raves about the car ... And he was a Toyota fan boy ...... |

madgoat: What oil and transmission fluid will u recommend? Most civic 5w20 oil you just have to read the owners manual .. Transmission fluid ATF DW1 this is what is recommended for my civic 03 to 05 .. But for 06 upwards I don't know , you can check owners manual to verify

The only thing I know is that NEVER invest over 1.5m to buy a ride for Ehailing... it will not come back as you calculated. Very true.. When elantra was becoming to expensive to buy , Omo I had to look for alternative.... |

A business person has to stick with what works best for him/her. And yes I know my civics very well ....below is my very first civic on uber ....bought the car with 167k miles and sold it with 275k miles.... The kind look I will give somebody that tells me to get any other car ,apart from a civic... I always back up whatever I say or do .. The taste is in the pudding....

chinyce: Exactly same feelings. That car has been over hyped, over priced, over emphasis.
Our car dealers can can research for us best vehicle for these kind of business. Toyota corolla is not it anymore. Dealers main job is to sell cars .. To find the best car for the job, you need to talk to people that have been doing the business for long....Have had civic for over two years on uber , so I can give a better judgement on the car not dealers.... Just like with anything else, I always tell people to do their own research... this is what works for me , it may or not work for you depending how serious you take it |

Felicity0001: @Dru23, a quick question pls... From experience with yiur a mantra and Honda cars which one of these cars is prone to faults and in terms of cost of maintenance which is cheaper? I will Rephrase the question like this ... .. But first Elantra 07 upwards are good cars. I don't want to discourage anyone from buying Elantra .....but when you say prone to faults under normal usage... NONE.... But when it comes to uber or ehailing usage the elantra cost me more to fix ,especially ball joint ,linkage ,bushings etc .. Have spent more on maintenance on the elantra, but the elantra has a fantastic engine ,almost as good as the civic.... You have to give the Elantra engine credit for that..... When I usually buy elantra from private sellers in the USA, some are sad to sell the car , the car has gotten their college kids through school...... But the civic , parts are cheap and easy to work on . The transmission is the only concern I have .. But from experience it should not be a major issue at all to worry about.. Plz keep in mind have been a fan of the civic since Uber was in their 2 year of business in Nigeria... My first 03 civic had rust and was buried under snow when I bought it.. The civic was a machine ,it was rugged till the day I sold it I don't recall buying shocks or doing major repairs... but one thing is that use the correct oil and transmission fluid when needed... ...... Now , when the civic started shorten oil , this was before I started selling oil or knew anything about types of oil .. The previous manager I had was using 5k naira and engine had a bit of sludge. So my mechanic advice me to sell the car before it's start smoking badly .. The car was sold within 1 week to my client in Abuja .. So before I sold the car to him, I did oil change ,brakes ,and change the spark plug.... So afterwards I ask my mechanic will this car make to Abuja ,he said oga don't worry it will make ... The car made it to Abuja true true, the driver that drove it even got into an accident because of over speeding.. The car had over 250k miles when I sold it off PS .... Just like with any other cars , plz find a specialist that only fixes a particular car .. The guy that fixes my car only does Honda cars only, nothing but Honda products.... Sorry story long ....lol |
