PhonesMobility Arena Founder Is Celebrating 11 Years Of Tech Blogging by dsnet(op): 3:12pm On Apr 19, 2016
We are still celebrating 11 years of funtastic tech blogging by Mobility Arena founder, Yomi Adegboye AKA Mister Mobility. We hope that you will get inspired by this legend of Nigeria's tech scene.

Mr. Mo has a Master's degree in Architecture from the University Of Lagos. He started out in tech as a self-taught webmaster in 2002. Then he started a reseller web-hosting business that grew to become one of Nigeria's top hosting firms, then DomainStandard.net. He grew this into a reseller web-hosting business that became one of Nigeria's top hosting firms.

The success of http://DomainStandard.net , the hosting biz, was mostly because of Mister Mo's use of mobile tools. He decided to start sharing about his use of mobile gadgets and services. And so in 2004, he started blogging. Back then, he hand-coded his early blog posts in HTML/xHTML. When WordPress gained traction, he switched to a WordPress-powered blog. in 2008, he started Mobility Nigeria, which has since been renamed Mobility Arena.

Eventually, Mr. Mo sold his web-hosting biz and embraced digital media fully. At a time when bloggers were largely ignored by big brands, Brands like Nokia and BlackBerry acknowledged his outstanding work and began to send him devices - flagship devices - both for review and for keeps. It was a first in Nigeria.

Mr. Mo has been invited to speak at tech events in Nigeria, South Africa and Ghana. Newspapers, magazines, TV shows, radio shows and online platforms have featured him extensively over the years. also, a number of tech bloggers and key players in Nigeria today cut their teeth under his tutelage. His work has seen MobilityArena.com hold its ground as the largest and foremost tech blog on the African continent.

In 2014, both Mr. Mo and Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata (CFA) became Nescafe Africa Influencers, making them the first Nigerian tech bloggers to be so endorsed by a brand. For three years in a row, Mr. Mo has been a recipient of YNaija/Ndani TV's YTech100 award for his contributions to the Nigerian technology space.

Mr. Mo has remained a very youthful person and continues to inspire a generation of young people to excellence. He continues to be involved in youth development through various organisations and initiatives. Thank you for celebrating with us.

PhonesAre Nigerians Watching More Internet Video On Mobile Than TV? by dsnet(op): 9:15pm On Jan 02, 2016
I keep hearing people speak glowingly about how Nigerians have now embraced video streaming and downloads. There is always someone who comes to me saying that my Nigerian-centric blog would see increased traffic if we put up more videos. Because I am deep in the industry, I know they have no idea what they are talking about. The truth is that internet video in Nigeria is still a very niche, even elitist, matter. Very few people stream or download video in any significant quantity.

As such, you can imagine the shock and outrage that I felt earlier today when I ran into a tweet that claimed that Nigerians now watch more video on mobile than on TV.

Nigerians now watch more video on mobile devices than TV? There is no way in heaven or in hell that such an assertion is even close to the truth. With what internet subscriptions would Nigerians be performing this incredible feat? The ones that take 30 seconds to 2 minutes to fully load load a simple HTML page? The same subscriptions that also cost an arm and a leg for the average Nigerian?

Thankfully, a contact of mine had read the report from which this supposed fact was gleaned from, and he didn’t find any such thing in it. Here:

Anyway, this was an opportunity for me to set the records straight. I asked Mr. Adegbola for the link to the report, which he obliged. Reading the Ericsson report, indeed it does not say anything about Nigerians watching more video on mobile devices than TV. As a matter of fact, the Ericsson report makes statements like:

- Streaming is yet to take off
- 76 percent of global consumers stream videos weekly, compared to 27 percent of Nigerians
- Only 30 percent of Nigerians are satisfied with streaming over the internet
- Globally, 38 percent of consumers use on-demand, internet-based video services, while in Nigeria this is just 16 percent
- Streaming issues and download speeds are the two most important factors affecting the satisfaction of those watching video content online

PhonesRe: Tech: Your Phone Got Dunked In Water? Here’s What To Do by dsnet: 12:30pm On Sep 15, 2015
oluwapoju:
If your precious smartphone gets water spilled on it, or falls into a bowl of water or the PC bowl (yuck!), don’t panic. There is something that you can do immediately to save it.

What To Do:

Turn it off immediately, and if the battery is removable, do remove it
Immerse the phone in a container of dry uncooked rice for about 8 hours
Put the battery back in and turn it back on.
Why rice? Rice is an absorbent and so absorbs moisture. When you immerse your wet phone in rice, the rice absorbs the moisture without putting your phone at the risk of heat. Sunning your wet phone can actually be damaging, as direct heat isn’t exactly what the doctor ordered.

Alternatively, just buy a water-proof smartphone instead if you regularly hang around a lot of water, so you never have to worry.
Dear original poster, it wouldn't have hurt to add the source of this post. Thanks.

PhonesHow Samsung Went From Exciting To Uninspiring by dsnet(op): 1:55pm On Aug 14, 2015
From MobilityArena.com, Mister Mobility writes:

Samsung rode on the wave of the iPhone to success. The Asian tiger rose to Android dominance by copying the design cues of the iPhone for its Galaxy S series and it paid off handsomely. That was in the beginning. Samsung became a blazing brand in mobile and quickly became the dominant power. They still are, but the flame is not burning so bright anymore.

Photocopy ko (is not) easy
For one, it seems that Samsung has gotten it into their head that copying the iPhone to the hilt is the way forward perpetually. Copying the visual design cues of the iPhone was okay. But now forging ahead in copying the limitations of the Apple’s cool aid in their flagship devices is downright silly. No micro SD card. No removable battery. Duh. Very soon, perhaps Samsung will remove multitasking and skin TouchWiz to run like iOS does.

But here is the deal: Android is not iOS. And the average Android user is not like the average iOS user. Android is about freedom and flexibility. For one, the freedom to choose how the user stores files and when to change their battery.

But that's not all. Read more
PhonesWho Exactly Is Making Money On Android OS? by dsnet(op): 4:51pm On Jul 13, 2015
Quarter (Q1) 2015 results show once again that Apple has smartphone market profits on the lock down. 92%. According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple raked in 92% of all smartphone industry profits in Q1 2015.

If my horrible math is not as horrible as I think it is, that means that the remaining 8% of the smartphone market's profit is shared between Samsung, LG, Sony, TECNO, Infinix, Pliris Mobile, Asus, OnePlus, Xiaomi, BlackBerry, Micromax, Microsoft, Alcatel, BLU, Yezz, Huawei, Lenovo, Lava, Gionee, HTC, Acer, and the scores of other smartphone brands scattered across the planet. Mind you, many of those on that list are reporting losses.

But let me paint the picture more accurately:

- iOS with 13.8% marketshare makes 92% of the profit
- Android with 78% marketshare makes 8% of the profit
- The others....oh, well

Mindboggling situation. Certainly, some of those Android brands are running at a loss, and many are making margins so small on the grand scale.

- So, no-one is making profit from Windows Phone.
- No-one is making profit from Firefox.
- No-one is making profit from Sailfish.

Many Android brands are struggling and returning losses. Samsung has been the poster boy for Android OS, but even its returns have been dropping in recent times. Perhaps if we asked the question, who exactly is making loads of money on Android, the only answer would be "Google".

Like I said in October 2014, perhaps iOS is the only viable smartphone platform. Who is going to prove that wrong?

PhonesFollow Spider Man, The Avengers, X-men And Other Heroes On Your Android Device by dsnet(op): 12:53pm On Jul 10, 2015
I currently have a collection of 58 Marvel Comics titles – ranging from Hulk, Spider Man, Iron Man, The Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-men to other lesser known titles – on my Android tablet. As someone who grew up on super hero comic books and then got starved of them after they disappeared from stores in Lagos, the Marvel Comics app for Android has been a delight.

The app allows you to pay for individual editions of thousands of comic books. My MasterCard debit card has worked fine so far. The app also provides you a limited number of editions to read for free. You can download each comic for offline reading.

There is a second official Marvel app, Marvel Unlimited, which I am yet to try out. However, it works on the basis of a flat fee of $70 per annum or $9.99 per month for access to all comics available. Both apps are free to download and are compatible with both Android smartphones and tablets.

PhonesWhen Monster-sized Smartphones Won’t Do by dsnet(op): 11:07am On May 19, 2015
I love phablets. Those monster-sized smartphones that lots of people like to carry around these days. Because of their larger displays, they are excellent for reading, browsing the web, watching videos, viewing images and other tasks along those lines. They are also usually very good with battery life. However, I find that personally, I tend to be more comfortable with a more handy smartphone if the performance difference is minimal. Let me illustrate with two real life scenarios.

Lumia 1520 versus Lumia 930
When I got my hands on the Lumia 1520, it was love at first touch (clear your head of that fleshy image, people!). It was powerful and had the best battery life I have experienced on any smartphone ever. Yet, when the Lumia 930 hit the streets, I quickly felt more comfortable with it and chose it over the 1520. Minus the size difference (and the much poorer battery life of the L930), both have the same processor, same RAM, and same internal storage. In other words, they were evenly matched. The handier 5-inch Lumia 930 became my preferred smartphone of the two. Let’s see a more recent example.

BlackBerry Passport versus BlackBerry Classic
I love the BlackBerry Passport. It is one heck of a device and I have sworn by it. Then along came the Classic – smaller, and in this case has a less powerful processor, smaller RAM, and even less capable camera. Yet, no matter how many times I have switched back to the Passport after completing my review of the Classic, I find myself longing for its handier, smaller form. In the last one week, I have switched between the Passport and the Classic every other day (and members of the Mobility Team are tired of my vacillation already). Well, I eventually made up my mind which to use daily. You guessed right – the Classic. Again, the handier device wins.

No; I don’t dislike phablets. I have used quite a number of good ones. Samsung Galaxy Note II, Lumia 1520, TECNO Phantom Z, HTC Desire 816, BlackBerry Passport, and Motorola Nexus 6 (which is really one heck of a device) are examples.

Perhaps it is because I like to travel light. I certainly love being able to use a device with one hand only. Perhaps there is some other reason that I am yet to finger. Perhaps it also helps that in both examples I cited above, the handier devices have classier designs than their bigger siblings. Whatever it is, it does seem that I prefer regular-sized devices (in the range of the size of 5-inches) to phablets.
