Trac: I'd advise anyone trying to get into the oil sector to make out a clear objective and optimise that. Many are not fit candidates. Yet they have degrees. This clouds the demarcation to differentiate those truly fit from the misfits. Companies - in today's times - do not want to pay for the training and then conclude it as a total loss, because the trained employee fails to meet job criterion/a.

Typical training cost about $30,000 (more or less). The money may not be the factor of annoyance but the downtime.

How do you prove yourself? A graduating set is at equality in terms of academic knowledge, thus degree is issued. What differentiates an alumnus from the other is the experience and concerned continuous-studies. In other words, meet the companies half-way. You can retrain and get a PGD in Pet Eng or Chem Eng to give you opportunity into core Pet Eng or work as a Process Engr in subsurface areas. Probably even as a drilling rep or in HES..limitless opportunities.

csharpjava: I think what he meant was millions of pin numbers made up of blocks of 13 digit pin numbers without repeating a block of pin number. This can only be achieved by using some Software Engineering Mathematical formulae like the ones below, which are then transferred into any programming language of your choice.

I do commend those who learn programming on their own, but my advice to you is that if you have the opportunity of going to Uni to study Software Engineering or Computer Science please don't throw it away.

For example in VB.NET you can predict the random figures that you'll get after a while. So that leads to the question, 'How random is random'
There was a crew in Nigeria that got paid in a mega way becos the wrote and algorithm that would generate millions of 13 digit PINs without repeating a number! Now thats a feat! If it was by using java.util.random to concatenate different different digits then there would be no big deal in doing that.

Nov1ce: I think I stated very well my thoughts on programming when I talked about effective and efficient codes.
As a Comp. Sci. student, I will be extremely disappoined if you tell me any tom, dick and harry coder will write me a chess algorithm that would always win or end in a stale mate as worse case senario. The guy would not know the slightest thing about sample space. If I tell him about alpha-beta pruning he would be looking like dodoyo!
And thats still on algorithm level, coding has not been talked about yet.
Can you write me a method that gives random integers without using the Math.Rand() method in Java?

mgb4reel: hmmm...graphical user interface!! A very important but yet challenging aspect. Many programmers no longer borda on how to code the design of gui's again bt now focus on EVENT HANDLING of the various component that constitute a Gui. Wonder how? Yeah, its possible. A very powerful feature provided by one of the most sophisticated IDE's (NetBeans) called pallete enable programmer to design Gui's vitualy without writing a single line of code. They only need to handle the events of the various components that constitute the Guis...This however stil require a basic knowledge of Gui component; at least u should kno what a JButton,JLabel etc look like an what they are used for! Although, it (pallete) is a very important tool in rapid software development but may give room to programmers from learning the true nature of this components. In my view...if you are working on an urgent project, USE IT...if not, write all codes yourself in order to be familiar not only with what these components are bt also how they behave.

The best System Analyis and Programmer i have seen are not coputer scientist. Infact most banks have the best programmer those who study Mathematic, Statistics, Electrical electronic Engineering. I bet it with you, what you learn in Nigeria University as a computer scientist in 4years, a certificate holder of Xarox, LearnIT, APTECH etc will learn in 2years. ........................ If that is your passion go learn it and do Electrical electronics, Building Technology, Mechanical becasue they will rule the Engineering world to tomorrow.
