Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called for a generational shift in African leadership, urging countries across the continent to deliberately promote younger leaders between the ages of 25 and 50, who he said are more physically and mentally equipped for the rigours of modern governance. Jonathan made the call on Thursday in Abuja at the International Memorial Lecture and Leadership Conference marking the 50th anniversary of the assassination of former Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed. Reflecting on the demands of leadership, the former president recalled that while in office, he sometimes had no more than two hours of sleep in 24 hours, stressing that advanced age can limit the capacity to cope with the pressures of governance. “Why do we begin to think that you must be a hundred years old before you can rule your country?” Jonathan asked. He noted that leadership requires unusual stamina and resilience, arguing that younger leaders are better positioned to withstand the pressure. “If they need to stay awake for 24 hours, they can stay awake for 24 hours. When I was in office, some days I did not sleep up to two hours. If you subject an older person to that kind of stress, the person will spend 50 per cent of the time in hospital,” he said. Jonathan aligned his position with the spirit of Nigeria’s “Not Too Young To Run” movement, which seeks to lower age barriers for elective offices and encourage youth participation in politics. “I have to reinforce the Not Too Young To Run movement. We have to bring some of these age limits down. If we are looking for people who can run nations in Africa, we should look within the 25 to 50 age bracket. That is when you can be very vibrant, physically strong and mentally sound,” he said. He also questioned the practice of some public office holders spending extended periods outside their states or countries. “In a country like the United States, some governors do not leave their states for four years. But here, some of our governors spend 50 per cent of their time outside. So who runs the state? Why will we not have security problems? Coming of age must transcend many things. First and foremost, we must have the discipline to manage ourselves,” he added. Reflecting on the legacy of General Murtala Muhammed, Jonathan said the late leader demonstrated that age was not a barrier to decisive and visionary leadership. Muhammed became Head of State at 38 and, despite ruling for only 200 days, left a lasting impact. “General Murtala Muhammed assumed office at the very young age of 38. Despite a tenure of only 200 days, his achievements were profound because he was driven by a clear, unyielding vision. Related News Makinde's ex-CoS dumps PDP Afternoon Recap: El-Rufai arrest drama, Otedola projects naira may hit ₦1,000/$, other top stories PDP not dead, Oyinlola rallies Osun supporters after Adeleke’s exit “His leadership sent a clear message: leadership was to serve the national interest, not personal ambition,” Jonathan said. He also referenced other Nigerian leaders who assumed office at relatively young ages, including General Yakubu Gowon, who became Head of State at 32 and later introduced the National Youth Service Corps, which remains in existence to this day. “A young man of 32 managed to pull the country through the civil war. So why do we now think leadership must only come at old age?” he asked. However, Jonathan cautioned that youth alone is insufficient without discipline, patriotism and strong institutions. While praising Muhammad’s decisiveness, he stressed that democracy depends more on institutions than on individuals. “Democracy requires vision rather than decree. It requires persuasion instead of command. It depends on institutions, not individuals. Above all, it requires respect for the rule of law and the willingness to submit power to the will of the people,” he said. He urged African leaders to view governance as stewardship rather than entitlement and encouraged young people to see leadership as service. “Young people must see leadership as service, not entitlement. Leaders must see governance as stewardship, not a right,” he said. “I sometimes remember when I contested as a deputy governorship candidate. You had to be 40 years old before you could even be a senator, a deputy governor or a governor, not to talk about president. Yet the Head of State we are celebrating today assumed office at 38,” he said. Calling on Nigerians and Africans to draw lessons from history, Jonathan said leadership should be measured by impact rather than duration in office. “As we mark 50 years of General Murtala Muhammed’s legacy, let us remember that leadership is not measured by how long you govern; it is measured by the courage to act decisively when the nation needs direction and by the impact you make on society,” he added. He emphasised that while military leaders govern by command and authority, democracy demands a different approach anchored on strong institutions, credible electoral bodies, an independent judiciary, well-trained security agencies and accountable governance systems. “While General Murtala Muhammed symbolised decisive leadership, our democratic future depends on strong institutions. Democracy requires vision rather than decree. It requires persuasion instead of command. It depends on institutions, not individuals. Democracy also demands restraint and respect for the rule of law,” Jonathan said.

"THE PHONES NO LONGER RING” -Yusuf Buhari, son of Late Nigeria’s President explains what life has become after he left the corridors of Power “After Goodluck Jonathan made that call to my dad to congratulate him on his victory as Nigeria’s next President. I used to receive up to 2,000 calls a day from different people. The calls would start coming in as early as 4 a.m. — from old classmates, acquaintances, extended family relatives, former maids, and servants who had once worked for the Buhari family at some point. There were also callers with bogus, untraceable explanations, but my assistant would simply come up with polite excuses to end those conversations quickly! But the moment my dad left power and handed the baton to His Excellency Bola Tinubu, the calls dropped dramatically to about 100 a day. After my dad was buried, they reduced even further to around 20 daily — usually just from siblings and business associates. The phones no longer ring. Nobody truly cares…”

Late Ewhrudjakpo Final Home Journey! Yesterday in our usual tradition of the Bayelsa State Executive Council since we came on board in 2020, we held a Special Valedictory Session to honour our departed Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Ph.D. Joined by my wife, Hon. Justice Patience Ama Diri, my Brother-Governor of Kwara State and Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, Deputy Governor of Abia State, Mr. Ikechukwu Emetu, I saw grief and emotions on the faces of members of the State Executive Council who reflected on their great moments with the late Ewhrudjakpo. This 180th Valedictory Executive Council session was the most proper and fitting occasion to formally recognise the service, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of a man who devoted himself so tirelessly to the discharge of public duty. As the Holy Scriptures remind us in Ecclesiastes 3:1: “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven”, meaning that “our human endeavours, our ambitions, and even our achievements are all subject to the sovereignty of God and the mystery of time.” This profound Bible verse draws our attention to the fact that life is a series of appointed times. There is a time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot; a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance. Today, we find ourselves in a sober season of mourning, a time that also calls for solemn reflection. Though grief weighs upon us, let us know that joy will come in the morning. For every Goliath, a David rises; for every Saul, a David stands tall; for every Pharaoh, a Red Sea parts. Senator Ewhrudjakpo has run his race; finished his course. Our own race continues. We owe it to his memory to run it with courage, wisdom and unity. May the soul of His Excellency, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Ph.D, our brother, friend and Deputy Governor, rest in perfect peace, and may light perpetually shine upon him. Earlier in the day, the State Judiciary held a Valedictory Court session. In contrast, later in the evening, a Funeral Vigil Mass was held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral, Swali Road, Yenagoa. Today, the remains of our beloved Deputy Governor would be committed to Mother Earth in his country home, Ofoni Federated Communities in Sagbama Local Government Area. It is well! --SDD

Honnold is renowned for being the first person to climb El Capitan without ropes or safety gear. The 915m (3,000 foot) granite cliff is in California's Yosemite national park. The climb was originally set to take place on Saturday but was delayed by wet weather. His ascent in Taiwan's capital was streamed live on Netflix, which said there was a delay on the live feed should the worst happen. Femi Otedola, billionaire businessman, has sold his majority stake in Geregu Power Plc for N1.088 trillion in a deal financed by a consortium of banks led by Zenith Bank Plc. The deal was announced by the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) on Monday. Otedola's Amperion Power Distribution Company Ltd held nearly 80 percent of the power generating company. TheCable understands that Otedola, who is also the chairman of First Holdco Ltd -- parent company of First Bank of Nigeria Plc -- will now concentrate on expanding his interest in the Nigerian banking sector, although he still retains some shares in Geregu. Otedola currently owns 17.01 percent of First Bank -- its single largest shareholder since it was established in 1894. His first big break as a businessman was in the energy sector when he set up Zenon Oil, a diesel marketing company, in 2003. Zenon controlled about 93 percent of the diesel market. Otedola later acquired African Petroleum (AP), another marketing company, in 2007 and rebranded it Forte Oil before exiting in 2019 to focus on power generation with Geregu, which currently generates 435MW -- up from 80MW when he took over the run-down plant. The share price of First Bank was N5 when he started investing in the bank but closed at N53 on Friday. He is the author of the Amazon bestseller, ‘Making It Big: Lessons from a Life

As the Senate screened and confirmed Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd) and new Minister of Defence, here is a clear and simple explanation of the different roles of the Minister of Defense, the Chief of Defense Staff, and the National Security Adviser in Nigeria: 1. Minister of Defense (MOD) Role: Political Head of the Armed Forces Main Responsibilities: A civilian political appointee and a member of the Federal Executive Council. Oversees the Ministry of Defense (Army, Navy, Air Force administration). Responsible for defense policy, military budgeting, procurement, and overall supervision of the armed forces. Advises the President on defence-related national policies. Does not command troops directly. Key Point: The Minister of Defense is the political boss of the military, focusing on policy, administration, and government oversight. 2. Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) Role: Highest-ranking Military Officer Main Responsibilities: Heads the Armed Forces of Nigeria operationally. Coordinates the activities of the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, and Chief of Air Staff. Provides military advice to the President and Minister of Defense. Oversees joint military operations (e.g., counter-terrorism, peacekeeping). Responsible for strategic planning, operations, and readiness of the armed forces. Key Point: The CDS is the professional military head and the top uniformed officer responsible for operations and command. 3. National Security Adviser (NSA) Role: Coordinator of All National Security Agencies Main Responsibilities: Advises the President on internal and external security issues. Coordinates intelligence from DSS, NIA, DIA, Police, Armed Forces, and other security bodies. Chairs national security meetings when assigned. Develops national security strategies and policies. Has no direct command over the military but influences security planning. Key Point: The NSA is the President’s top security adviser, focusing on intelligence coordination and national security policy, not military command. HIERARCHY: 1 President of Nigeria The top authority over all security and defence matters. 2 Minister of Defence (Political Head) Reports directly to the President. The CDS and service chiefs operate under the policies and directives approved by the Minister. 3 Chief of Defence Staff (Military Head) The highest-ranking officer in the armed forces. Commands the Army, Navy, and Air Force through their service chiefs. 4 National Security Adviser (Security Coordinator) Also reports directly to the President, but not part of the military command structure. Coordinates intelligence agencies and national security strategy. 📌 Important: The NSA and CDS are not in a command hierarchy with each other. *The CDS commands troops. *The NSA coordinates intelligence and advises the President. HOW THEY WORK TOGETHER: Minister of Defence: Sets defence policy and approves military budgets and operations with the President. Chief of Defense Staff: Executes military operations based on policies and directives from the Minister and President. Leads the service chiefs (Army, Navy, Quick Summary: Minister of Defense → Political leader of the armed forces Chief of Defense Staff → Operational commander of the armed forces National Security Adviser → Intelligence and security coordinator for the President @ChatGPT

As President Tinubu send name of ambassadors nominee to the senate for confirmation, here is a clear difference between career ambassadors and non-career ambassadors in Nigeria, especially in how they are appointed, promoted, and what roles they play: 1. Career Ambassadors (Career Foreign Service Officers) These are professional diplomats who joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through normal civil service recruitment and grew through the ranks. Key Features 6 They are trained diplomats with many years of service. Promotion is based on merit, years of experience, exams, and performance. They start as Third Secretary → Second Secretary → First Secretary → Counselor → Minister → Ambassador. They understand diplomacy, foreign policy, protocol, and international relations deeply. They are permanent staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They can serve in multiple countries during their career. They are expected to represent Nigeria professionally regardless of politics. Their appointment as ambassadors is a culmination of their career, not a political reward. Examples Someone who joined the Foreign Service in 1990 and rose through ranks until posted as Ambassador in 2025. 2. Non-Career Ambassadors (Political Appointees) These are individuals appointed by the President, often as a political reward, honour, or recognition—not because they are career diplomats. Key Features They are not professional diplomats and did not rise through the Foreign Service ranks. Usually selected due to: political loyalty national service expertise in another field ethnic or state balancing They require Senate confirmation just like career ambassadors. They depend heavily on the embassy’s career staff to run day-to-day diplomatic work. Their appointment usually ends when the administration that appointed them leaves office. They often serve as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, but with limited diplomatic background. Examples A former governor, politician, business leader, or retired military officer appointed as ambassador. 3. Major Differences at a Glance Aspect Career Ambassador Non-Career Ambassador Background Professional diplomat Political or honorary appointee Experience Years of diplomatic training & postings May have no diplomatic training Appointment Based on promotion and merit President’s discretionary appointment Stability Can remain in diplomatic service long-term Tenure tied to administration Operational Knowledge Deep knowledge of foreign policy Depends on embassy staff for expertise Reason for Posting Career progression Political reward or representation 4. Summary Career ambassadors = trained diplomats who rose through the system. Non-career ambassadors = political appointees who may not have diplomatic background. Both represent Nigeria abroad, but career officers handle technical diplomatic work, while non-career ambassadors often handle high-level representation and politica
