Zediccus: As a lawyer, (though not yet called to the bar) i don't really fancy the wig thing. But try suggesting this to a practising lawyer and it will likely meet a brick wall. It wldn't even be seen as a form of colonial mentality, rather it represents wisdom, respect, pride and what-have-you.pls tell them |

djeezy: Nice question. Looking at it functionally, It is a practice set aside by the legal luminaries and not a contrivance to intimidate the public. The legal proffesion is prestigious and we protect our dignity at all cost. We are the common law colony and our judicial system is akin to that of the British. The wig was received and they stoped? How would it make us look if we stop? We are not zombies or robots. We have a mind of our own. This is the same arguement most lawyers in Kenya gave when it was abolished, that it makes the legal profession be taken less seriously but personally i was happy. As long as i have that certificate that declares i am an Advocate of the High Court the rest does not matter |

djeezy: Bewildering labyrinth of facts, blustering desire for publicity. Standing on the protocol already established I consider this thread another ignorance by the hoi polloi. I do not understand why you dimwits, cretins and simpletons here would tell us how to go about the ethics of our proffesion ipso facto. It is beyond your personal voyage or your capacity to raise it as an issue, leave it in situ. Having read your comments supra, it was filled with sheer ignorance by those who call themselves educated. Abolishment of the wig is for us to decided, the NBA is there. We do not need your opinions. Suffice it not to mention what the wig symbolizes hereunder;Learned friend im sure most people will not understand the legal terms you have used above but pls sir how does the wig and gown add prestige to the profession?being a lawyer in itself is already prestigious enough so i do not see the need for the gown |

They banned them in Kenya already..the Chief Justice said its aping our colonial masters and that the climate makes them stuffy and uncomfortable due to humidity..Thank God because i could not picture myself in that as a lawyer 1 Like |
Politics / Re: Theories To Explain The Backward State Of Africa by Dyamante(f): 11:37am On May 11, 2012 |
It is the divide and rule method employed by the Europeans that set us on the destruction path that we are in today. The fact that the colonialists considered certain tribes to be superior to others has contributed immensely to the current state of affairs. But they are not solely to be blamed for this because we Africans have condemned ourselves to this kind of mentality and unless we change we are doomed. Also neo colonialism is a contributing factor..most of the African nations lean towards their former colonial masters who shove their policies and ideas down our throats that are detrimental for our growth in exchange for loans and grants. I salute Gaddafi because he proved that an african country can do without the western nations and prosper even more without them. I can go on and on but until the day Africans take iniative and decide that WE are in charge of our own destiny is when things will get better for us |
Politics / Re: Have You Given Up On Nigeria? by Dyamante(f): 11:11am On May 11, 2012 |
love_life: Among all the various ethnic groups that lay claim to the geopolitical or geospatial enclave so-called Nigeria, i've met Hausas, Ibos, Yorubas (my clan), Fulanis, Ijaws, Ebiras and many other various tribes but i've never met a Nigerian. Do you want to know why? It's simple, in reality Nigeria doesn't exist. What you have is a bunch of mismatched tribes competing against themselves for the domination of the colonially defined territory they have found themselves in. The global recognition granted the so-called Nigeria as an independent sovereignty among the comity of nations is nothing but fiction. In other words, Nigeria is a fictitious entity designed by powerful colonial States to maintain the status quo of their cultural superiority over it and to prevent any individual tribe in the region from achieving self-actualization into a sovereign State that can gain political ascendancy to challenge the supremacy of the powers that be as it relates to nationhood. Now, tell me how or why should I have hope in a forking country that doesn't forking exist? I have no hope in Nigeria whatsoever, not even by an infinitesimal amount. Our politicians and rulers all these wasted years have been willing to play the 'Nigeria' game with the rest of the world only because it made them extremely rich. The moment they can no longer 'cash-in' money through the imaginary cashcow called Nigeria, then it will be game over. This is my personal opinion and I'm not influencing or suggesting that anyone should follow suit. However, I think the earlier we all go our forking separate ways, then the forking better it's gonna get for all of us. The Nigerian State does not exist and the Nigerian citizen is an elaborate hoax; there are no real Nigerian citizens. Like I said before, all we have are Yorubas, Hausas, Ibos, Fulanis, Urobos, Ebiras, Ijaws, Efiks and the rest of them other tribes. This poster has summarized the whole topic perfectly 1 Like |

GAR3TH: As homophobic as I am what i really cant stand is the utter Bigotry I keep seeing on Nairaland. Every time a gay thread opens you see people flood it with bible quotes, praising the lord etc. But isn't it the same Bible that also condemns polygamy, divorce, monogamy, lifelong celibacy, adultery, Gluttony etc because they are also sin. So How many Nairalanders are FAT, then in that case you are going to hell for gluttony. How many Nairalanders are divorced or remarried, well your going to hell because that is a sin.pls tell them..too much hypocrisy on NL |

maclatunji: Men and women are not equal, but there has to be equity. A woman will always have some men she is ahead of in many matters. So, it is not a one-size-fits-all thing. However, if you are talking about Husband and wife, the husband is definitely the leader.gbam this is it...people should learn that equality and equity are two entirely different things |
