just want to add to ur point pig is a long term investment not a quick rich scheme and u must no the major aspect in piggery b4 u venture into it,let me agree n disagree with d point u mention breeds is overated buying 100k weaners just to produce a slaughter weaners is not economic wise,but we av so many good breeds out there that are pocket fwendly,but with my small experience breeds also mata cos place them under same feed n housing they will give u diff FCR just go for the 1 that will fit in to ur taste and be wise

I understand your standpoint but like i said, i am giving my own personal experience borne out of years of practical pig rearing. I have 17 females that i use for breeding currently. The only secrets to good breeding is in buying an exotic or foreign male. But females can be any breed. If you are an experienced hand, you can by looks know a female weaner that should do well.

As a matter of fact if someone will really learn and acquire knowledge and relevant experiences in piggery, it is quite better to start with crossed or pregnant sows or such an individual mate the gilts personally.

A new farmer will learn the behavior of the animals while pregnant and at delivery period.

Also, he can also benefit from knowing how to take care of piglets and weaners and their behaviors.
There's nothing like starting from the beginning because such an individual will really have bulk of experience in a short while which will make him succeed.
It is imperative to know that in piggery, "the more the experience, the more the success rate and stories".

After spending years rearing pigs, i beg to totally disagree with you. I had this argument with my mom sometime ago and she told me she prefers in-pigs because of the short space of time etc. But let me make u understand that as a learner, its suicide to start with pregnant pigs when you have no knowledge of pig rearing. Its only good for experienced farmers but u know what?? No experienced farmer will buy an in-pig. Also its more expensive than rearing from weaner level. Breeds are very overrated, that is one fact i can stand upon from experience.

Even as you have left them with him, purchase some weaners and learn how to manage them and care for them

@dynamix101. That's what I meant. I know some farmers who only make use of pkc as their feed whereas pkc is dominated with high level of protein which can surely be helpful in animal growth but to have balanced diet in feeding I think it's necessary to include other classes of food like carbohydrates sources, vitamin sources and others.
That's why I want other professionals to react to this just to share views.

Well this is the first time i am hearing that a farmer will use only PKC. Its not possible because PKC contains high levels of oil not proteins and he has to mix it with something, usually brewery spent grains or cassava peels

Hello house! There's an important matter which. I want other professionals to react upon.
I want us to discuss the use of only Pkc for feeding our pigs ; neglecting other known good feeds which are also sources of good nutrients to the animal. Like Cassava and maize which known to be good sources of carbohydrates, brewery waste, soya beans and so on.
Please let's share our views.

Your post isnt clear. Are you saying farmers dont use maize and cassava??

I dont know any pig farmer who doesnt make use of soyabeans, maize and pkc in his compounded feed and who doesnt supplement with brewery waste and cassava peels to make up for the necessary daily feed weight intake of his animals

Grow to 1500 how?? By multiplying your herd or buying animals to add up to them??
Will income be generated during this period?? Do you have the time and energy to run a piggery?? Do u have the space and financial muscle to raise 1500 pigs?? Feeding alone costs almost 800k per month??
There are a lot of things u consider when planning for long term farming. You need to discuss with someone who has handson experience so that you dont start and run out eventually
