Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee — are the final two candidates to lead the World Trade Organization (WTO). A woman has never served as director general in it’s 25-year history. WTO will likely have the first female director general in its 25-year history. “They’re both very well qualified, it’s going to be a fight,” said William Reinsch, a trade official in the Clinton administration and senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. The top challenge will be “restoring the organization to full strength and viability, and restoring its reputation. “You need members to have confidence that the WTO is capable of solving problems. I think right now that confidence is eroded.” Okonjo-Iweala served as Nigeria’s finance minister and one term as foreign affairs minister. She has also sat on the Boards of Standard Chartered Bank, Twitter, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), and the African Risk Capacity (ARC) Yoo is South Korea’s trade minister. During her 25-year career in government, she has helped expand her country’s trade network through bilateral accords with the U.S., China and the U.K. WTO General Council Chairman David Walker plans to formally announce the results to the institution’s delegates on Thursday morning in Geneva. Petroelum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) have ordered their members in Chevron Nigeria Limited to shut down operations. The directive was contained in a joint statement on Sunday by NUPENG President, Williams Akporeha, and PENGASSAN President, Festus Osifo. It followed the sack of 600 Nigerian employees. The unions also cited Chevron’s alleged anti-labour practices. They said: “We have directed our members in Chevron to withdraw their services. We call on the Federal Government to call Chevron to order; we can no longer guarantee industrial peace in the oil and gas sector. “Here is our fatherland and we have a labour law that regulates the activities of organisations in Nigeria; this law cannot be breached; We must follow the process.” Labour alleged that Chevron management, on Independence Day, notified about 2,000 employees that their services were no longer required. The leaders further alleged that Chevron asked employees still interested in working with them to apply afresh. NUPENG and PENGASSAN declared that the development runs contrary to Nigerian laws and does not protect national interest. “This is an imperialist agenda that must not be allowed to stay; most especially as we have just finished celebrating our 60th independence as a sovereign country,” they said. Chevron General Manager Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Esimaje Brikinn, explained that the welfare and safety of its workforce was one of its highest priorities. He noted that the changes made were not easy decisions, but aimed at improving the company’s ability to remain competitive in Nigeria. Brikinn said “Reducing the cost and improving the efficiency of our operations are critical to generating more revenues for the Federal Government of Nigeria,” https://eaglenewshour.com/index.php/2020/10/05/nigeria-unemployment-rate-rises-as-nupeng-pengassan-shut-down-chevron/ Cc _lalasticlala _ishilove

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to a statement by President Muhammadu Buhari blaming past leaders for Nigeria’s present woes. However, reacting via his Twitter handle on Friday, Atiku Abubakar said Obasanjo’s administration was a period of restoration for Nigeria. According to him, Nigeria paid off her entire debt between 1999 and 2007 and maintained a 6% GDP growth. His tweet read, “Between 1999 and 2007, Nigeria paid off her entire foreign debt while maintaining an unprecedented 6% annual GDP growth. “Those were periods of national restoration, and I am very proud of the work President Obasanjo and I did for this nation we care so much for. The court of appeal sitting in Abuja has upheld the election of Douye Diri as governor of Bayelsa state. In a split judgment on August 17, two out of three judges had upheld the petition filed by Lucky King-George, candidate of the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP), on grounds that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was wrong to have excluded the party from the November 16, 2019 governorship election. The tribunal ordered INEC to conduct a fresh poll in the state within 90 days. But in three separate appeals, Diri, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and INEC had approached the appellate court seeking to upturn the tribunal’s decision. In the lead appeal, Chris Uche, Diri’s counsel, submitted that the petition by the ANDP was statute-barred. According to Uche, the ANDP had filed its petition more than five months after the cause of action arose, instead of within 14 days as stated in the Electoral Act. PDP, in its appeal filed by Yunus Ustaz, their counsel, drew the court’s attention to the affidavit of the ANDP national chairman, where he admitted that the party had no candidate in the November 16 governorship poll. He added that if a rerun is ordered, the ANDP will have nothing to gain because the case has become “academic”. INEC, in its own appeal, argued that by the alteration done to section 285 of the 1999 constitution, it has the power to screen and disqualify any candidate wrongly nominated by a political party. INEC had explained that it excluded ANDP from the election because David Esinkuma, the party’s initial deputy governorship candidate, did not meet the age requirement of 35 years. Delivering judgement on Friday, a five-man panel of the appellate court, led by Adriza Mshella, upheld Diri’s appeal. The court held that the petition filed by the ANDP at the lower tribunal was statute-barred. The Osun State House of Assembly has begun a probe into allegations that a sum of €10,000, Osun United’s share in the transfer fee of Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo from Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua to Manchester United last January, has been diverted into private pockets. Osogbo-based Osun United, formerly known as Prime FC, was the last local club former Super Eagles striker Ighalo played for before moving abroad to join Norwegian side Lyn Oslo in 2007. Sources close to the club said Osun State Commissioner for Sports, Yemi Lawal, was among those invited to a meeting at the House Assembly last week over the issue. Also at the meeting presided over by Chairman, House Committee on Sports, Adrullahi Adegbile, were officials of Osun United, led by the club secretary, Kabiru Adekunle, and the acting General Manager of Osun State Sports Council, Rotimi Oludunmoye. Also mentioned as playing a role in the receipt of the money is Gbenga Ololade, the then acting General Manager of Prime FC when Ighalo’s transfer to Lyn was sealed. Chairman, Osun House Committee on Sports, Adegbile, said the committee was yet to complete its investigation. He said, “When we got the information, we invited all the parties. After a thorough investigation into the issue, I assure you, we will make our findings public. We will still invite them this week.” An official of Osun United, who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the €10,000 was paid into Osun United’s Access Bank account in May, adding that a former president of the club and a present Director in the Ministry of Sports were the signatories to the account. He added that the meeting with the House of Assembly members was inconclusive. He added, “What rendered the discussion at the House of Assembly inconclusive was that the two signatories to the account were not present at the meeting. https://eaglenewshour.com/index.php/2020/09/30/osun-assembly-probes-ighalo-transfer-share-disappearance/ Cc Lalasticlala Ishilove Semid4lyfe Obinoscopy |
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has received a serious warning from Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, about godfatherism, which the PDP campaigned against before the September 19, 2020, Edo State governorship election. The monarch stated this on Tuesday, September 29, when five PDP governors, Nyesom Wike of Rivers, Aminu Tanbuwal of Sokoto, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, and Godwin Obaseki of Edo paid him a courtesy call. Oba Ewuare II told them not to control Governor Godwin Obaseki, despite playing a significant role in helping him win re-election in Edo state. He said, “I want to on this occasion plead with the PDP to guide against godfatherism and not to allow evil members to kill your party. “I will tell the PDP governors not to become hidden godfathers that will be controlling Governor Obaseki. “All hands should be on deck to work for Edo State and Edo people everywhere they may be. This is where everybody will be proud to belong to. I said the whole world is watching Edo State, and I thank God and our ancestors that the election came without any violence.” https://eaglenewshour.com/index.php/2020/09/30/dont-try-to-control-obaseki-oba-of-benin-warns-wike-other-pdp-governors/ Cc Lalasticlala Ishilove Semid4lyfe Obinoscopy

The leader of INRI Evangelical spiritual church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has warned the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the last governorship election, Ize-Iyamu not to drag the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki to court. He said, “APC and it’s candidate, Ize-Iyamu shouldn’t bother to drag Godwin Obaseki to court because they will lose the case.” In a statement to DAILY POST on Wednesday, Ayodele revealed that God also told him that victory in the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State will be between the incumbent Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu and Ajayi Agboola of the Zenith Labour Party. The election has three major contenders. They include Akeredolu of the APC, the Peoples Democratic Party’s Eyitayo Jegede and Ajayi of the Zenith Labour Party. Speaking on the candidature of Jegede, Ayodele advised that the PDP candidate should not waste his money because he does not stand a good chance in the election. ‘’Agboola Ajayi will push more than Eyitayo Jegede in the coming election, Jedege has not taken the right steps. If Agboola Ajayi does the needful, he stands a chance against Rotimi Akeredolu in the election. “The election victory is between Akeredolu and Ajayi. “Ajayi is yet to see where he is lacking and Akeredolu will use technicality and manipulation to win the other candidates if they are not careful. “As I have said earlier, Akeredolu will not get the people’s mandate and he will not win except he uses manipulation, money, power of incumbency, security and technicality. “The other candidates don’t have these, and they are not working against them yet, they are still making noise. If Agboola Ajayi can work seriously against these things, he still stands a chance.’’
