Mr Michael Yigao, Managing Director, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, CCECC, Nigeria Ltd, says the 15 Chinese medical experts that arrived in the country on April 8 are in the company’s care.


Yigao made the disclosure on Monday in Abuja while reacting to questions raised by the media and opposition parties on May 14, as to the whereabouts of the Chinese medical team.

This followed comment by the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, that the experts, who reportedly came into Nigeria to support the fight against COVID-19, were not his guests but those of CCECC.

Ehanire, while responding to questions at the daily Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 briefing May 14, said “the medical personnel are not guests of the Federal Government but that of the construction company”.


Yigao, who corroborated this while speaking with newsmen, confirmed that the experts came into the country to share their experiences in fighting the COVID-19.

It will be recalled that some Nigerians had kicked against the decision to invite the medical experts, saying the country had enough doctors to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) even described the move as an embarrassment to the association and other health workers who were giving their best in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic under “deplorable working conditions”.


However, Yigao clarified that the team came specially to help CCECC fight this pandemic and protect its employees.

“The team had a telecast meeting with the Minister of Health and some doctors around the country and shared their experience in China on how they’re fighting the virus and the meeting was very positive.

“ They are here with us and have continued to teach our staff how to protect themselves because protection and prevention are more important than the treatment.


“Most of the workers understand the situation now and they know the risk, so they follow the proper procedures and cooperate with their instructors,’’ he said.

He said the medical experts would be heading home as soon as there was a commercial flight to China.

“Right now, commercial flight to China is not open, but when flights are open again, we’re considering the team going back to China.”

He praised the Nigerian government for how they had been able to contain the pandemic so far.


“In a big country like Nigeria, it can be a bit difficult to control a pandemic because you will have to make all the people of such a large country understand that it is serious and real thing.

“I think Nigeria is taking this very seriously and you can see it in the implementation of the lockdown and the suspension of international flights etc.

“And like other companies in Nigeria, we will do whatever we can to help the country, like building treatment centres and training people on how to handle the virus”.


He said that his company would like to build on the strong mutual relationship between Nigeria and China.

“ Upon request from the Nigerian government, we gave necessary support, like building treatment centres and at the same time delivered some health related equipment.

“We understand the COVID-19 pandemic challenge in Nigeria because we are based here and have a lot of employees and we do believe, that with efforts from the government from the people, we will win this war.
“I hope the people of Nigeria understand that we need the help of all peoples across the world to win this fight against Coronavirus,’’ he added.

He said that CCECC would continue to give quality support to the Nigerian people in all areas.

“CCECC is a Nigerian company based here for nearly 40 years, and most of the staff here are Nigerians, so we have a Nigerian voice.

China’s Ambassador to Israel, Du Wei, has been found dead in his apartment in a Tel Aviv suburb, an Israeli official told BBC News.

The official said Israeli police had launched an investigation but initial findings suggested no foul play.

Mr Du, 57, was only appointed ambassador in February having previously served as envoy to Ukraine.

The ambassador was married and had a son but his family had still to join him in Israel.

He was living in the Tel Aviv suburb of Herzliya.

An Israeli police spokesman told Reuters news agency: "As part of the regular procedure, police units are at the scene."

Israel's Channel 12 TV, quoting unnamed medical sources, said initial indications were that Mr Du had died in his sleep of natural causes.

In a message published on the embassy's website just after his appointment as ambassador, Mr Du praised the relations between "the second largest economy in the world and Israel the start-up nation".

Self-isolation on arrival
When he arrived in Israel on 15 February, Mr Du had immediately to self-isolate for two weeks because of coronavirus restrictions.

In an interview with Israeli newspaper Makor Rishon last month, Mr Du said China was being made the world's scapegoat.

"In history, more than once, a certain group of people was accused of spreading pandemics," he said.

"That is despicable and should be condemned. The disease is an enemy of the entire humankind and the world should fight it together."

On Friday, his embassy made a scathing attack on US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who had criticised China's handling of the coronavirus pandemic on a visit to Israel.

In a response published in the Jerusalem Post, the embassy condemned Mr Pompeo's "absurd comments", denying that China had ever covered up the crisis.

Facebook has purchased the GIF-maker Giphy and plans to make it part of the Instagram team.

A report from Axios values the deal at $400m (£330m), but Facebook would not confirm the final price.

In a blog post, Instagram's VP of Products Vishal Shah said third party firms would still have access to Giphy's library of GIFs and stickers.

But many of those sites including Twitter and Pintrest are direct competitors to Facebook.

A Graphical Interchange Format or GIF is an animated image or short soundless video that plays on a continuous loop without requiring the viewer to press play.

They are often used on social media or messaging app to convey an emotion or joke.

Mr Shah wrote Giphy's animated images made "conversations more entertaining" and said its library would be integrated into Instagram and Facebook's other platforms.

Giphy is one of the largest sites for creating these images and storing them. Its main competitor is Imgur.

Facebook said 50% of Giphy's traffic already came from its platforms and half of that was from Instagram.

The purchase comes at a time when Facebook has seen increased users due to Covid-19 lockdown orders. But, in the months preceding the global pandemic the social media giant had been facing increased scrutiny from US regulators over antitrust concerns and that it had too much control over the social media space.

Reacting to the arrest of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB ) members, Publicity Secretary of the group, Mr Emma Powerful, in a statement, said those arrested were not members of the organization.
He said: “It has come to the notice of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, though not by surprise, claims by the Nigeria Police that some persons allegedly arrested with AK-47 riffles in Delta State are IPOB members.

“We do not need to dissipate energy trying to prove our innocence because we already know the antecedents of the Nigeria Security agencies and their bitterness towards us, however, we wish to put the record straight for the sake of the gullible, and perhaps innocent Biafrans the security agents want to hang or waste unjustifiably by branding them IPOB members.
“The fact remains that our non-violent philosophy in our quest to restore Biafra Republic has not changed, and any time we feel like changing that position we shall make it open and also tell the world our next strategy. Our Leader, Nnamdi Kanu has continuously made it clear that Biafra will be actualised without firing a shot. And for now, that position has not changed.
“IPOB remains a peaceful movement seeking to restore Biafra without violence. We are not into any arms struggle. If we were to pick up arms against the Nigeria government, thousands of our members killed in cold blood by Nigerian security agents would have defended themselves instead of dying like sacrificial lambs.
“If at all any person (s) were arrested with AK-47 in Delta State, those who arrested them should try to establish their true identity. No IPOB family member bears arms for any reason. Nineteen sailors have been killed and 15 others injured in an accident involving Iranian naval vessels in the Gulf of Oman, Iran's navy has said.

Iranian media reported that the support ship Konarak was hit by a new anti-ship missile being tested by the frigate Jamaran during an exercise on Sunday.

The Konarak had been putting targets out in the water and remained too close to one, according to the reports.

The navy said the ship was towed ashore and that an investigation had begun.

The incident took place near the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway through which about a fifth of the world's oil passes.

"On Sunday evening... during naval exercises performed by a number of the naval force's vessels in the waters of Jask and Chabahar, an accident happened involving the Konarak light support ship vessel, causing the martyrdom of a number of brave members of the naval forces," the navy said in a statement on Monday.

The statement added that the Konarak had been taken to a port for "technical inspection", but it made no reference to the circumstances of the accident.

The Iranian armed forces are no strangers to error.

In January, an air defence unit fired two surface-to-air missiles at an unidentified target, bringing down a Ukrainian airliner and killing all those on board. That mistake came at a time of heightened tension, with the Iranians expecting a retaliatory US missile strike.

But Sunday's incident took place in very different circumstances - a planned naval exercise - and raises all sorts of questions about command and control and the professionalism of the Iranian navy.

Iran is seeking to broaden the sphere of its naval operations and to upgrade its warships' armament. The frigate Jamaran is part of a new class of home-built vessels intended to set a new course for Iran's navy.

But it remains, to some extent, an over-looked service. It is the Revolutionary Guards' flotilla of fast patrol boats that seem to figure most prominently in Iranian efforts to harass and monitor US and other shipping in the Gulf.

Iranian media earlier reported the Konarak had been accidentally struck by an anti-ship missile fired by the Jamaran during an exercise near the port of Jask.

"The vessel was hit after moving a practice target to its destination and not creating enough distance between itself and the target," state television reported on its website.

State broadcaster Irib posted video footage of the aftermath of the incident on Twitter. It showed significant damage to several structures on the deck of the Konarak and black smoke rising from them.

The Konarak is a 47m (154ft) long Hendijan-class logistical support vessel that was made in the Netherlands and bought by Iran before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
