Politics › Coronavirus: Dogs To Be Trained To Detect Virus by Earlystar698(op): 12:15pm On Mar 29, 2020
Specialist sniffer dogs are to be tested to see if they can detect coronavirus.

The charity Medical Detection Dogs has already trained dogs to spot the scent of malaria, cancer and Parkinson's.

It plans trials on the current pandemic virus with Durham University and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).

Charity boss Dr Claire Guest said it had to find out how to "safely catch the odour of the virus from patients".

"In principle, we're sure that dogs could detect Covid-19," she said.

'Fast and effective'
If this is proven, the dogs could be used to screen anyone, including those with no symptoms.

"This would be fast, effective and non-invasive and make sure the limited NHS testing resources are only used where they are really needed," Dr Guest said.

LSHTM head of disease control Prof James Logan said research showed dogs could detect the odour of malaria infection with a level of accuracy "above the World Health Organisation standards for a diagnostic".

Medical Detection Dogs said each disease had its own unique odour.

Dogs could be ready in six weeks to help provide a "rapid, non-invasive diagnosis", it said.

They could potentially also be trained to tell if someone had a fever.

Prof Steve Lindsay, from Durham University's Department of Biosciences, said detection dogs could be used at airports to rapidly identify people carrying the virus.

"This would help prevent the re-emergence of the disease after we have brought the present epidemic under control," he said.

Politics › Covid-19 : Gov. Umahi Visit Different Boundaries To Ensure Total Lockdown by Earlystar698(op): 10:16pm On Mar 28, 2020
COVID-19: Gov. Umahi Tightens Ebonyi State Borders, Visits Different Boundaries To Ensure Total Lockdown(Photos)

In a bid to curtail the dreaded Coronavirus from entering Ebonyi State, Governor David Nweze Umahi, FNSE, FNATE, on Saturday, embarked on interstate boundary checks, chiding security men earlier dispatched to the adjoining boundaries of the state to ensure nobody except fuels, food condiments and medical equipment are allowed to enter the state.

Leading the Anti-Corona Virus team which comprised all the security heads in the state from the St Margaret Umahi Int'l Market, the team moved to the boundary between Abaomege and Igbo Imabana Community in Abi LGA of Cross River State.

At the Abi and Abaomege boundary, Governor Umahi uncovered plots by commuters to enter the state against government's directives and frowned at the attitude of commuters and motorists toward the measure which was taken to avoid further spread of the dreaded virus.

All the commuters coming into the state were asked to return to where they came from, an exercise he personally supervised.

Seeing compliance to the directives, he moved to check the level of compliance at the boundary between Uturu in Abia State and Mile 2 in Ishiagu LGA of Ebonyi State where the same Abaomege scenario played out. He immediately ordered and enforced the returning of all the parked vehicles attempting to sneak into the state through the boundary back to where they came from.

At the scene of the event, a commuter, Mrs Lucy Okafor from Enugu state described Umahi as a man with an excess energy .

Mrs. Okafor said it is only Gov. Umahi that she has seen personally monitoring the compliance of boundary closure which shows that he loves the good people of Ebonyi State.

In her words,

"It is only Ebonyi State Governor that I have seen leading people to boundaries to see if people are flouting the order."

"Other governors only say it without monitoring compliance, and that's the reason this thing (virus) is entering other states".

"This man has excess energy".

At the end of the exercise - the Governor thanked the committee leaders and members for all their total commitments in ensuring that Covid-19 pandemic is not allowed to enter Ebonyi and further recommended that Ebonyians must take the fight more seriously and that more youths should be immediately mobilized to work with security agents to ensure that all entries into Ebonyi State are completely locked down.

"To all Chairmen of our LGAs, Committee members and leaders, let me highly commend you for all your kind commitment ever since this unfortunate Covid-19 started.

"This lockdown against the movement of passengers and none essential trucks in and out of our State is the only sure way to further protect our people.

"We will involve more youths to work with the security agents day and night in all the exit and entry points of the state to ensure total lockdown.

"I plead that we take this matter very seriously as leakage will not be accepted until we completely win."

28/3/2020

Government further called on farmers, especially the rice millers and other food processing industries to expedite action on food production, to ensure availability of food to the general public, in case there is need for total lockdown of activities in the State.

Government is also considering inter-senatorial partial movement restriction in the state from Monday, 30th March, 2020.

Ebonyi State Government has prepared quarantine, isolation and treatments centres at the border between Enugu and Ebonyi State as well as Unity Square, with one holding area at Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (AE-FETHA) where suspected cases will stay, if the test result is positive, he/she will be moved to any of the isolation/treatment centres.

Members of the public are enjoined to supply information about the returnees from outside the country or from other parts of Nigeria.

Also, Government has made available hotel accommodation for all the medical personnel that will be involved in carrying out test/treatment on patients with suspected cases, and also, to ensure that they are fully isolated from associating with families and the public, as government does not want to risk their lives or that of their family members.

Given the forgoing, Ebonyi State Government is calling on medical workers, who wish to volunteer in the handling and treatment of suspected COVID-19 patients and confirmed cases to report to the office of Hon. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Umezurike or Dr. Emeka Onwe Ogah, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (AE-FETHA) and register immediately.

All these actions taken by the State Government are to ensure the protection of lives of Ebonyians which government swore to, under the oath of Federal Republic of Nigeria.

By the grace of God, there is no record of COVID-19, so far in Ebonyi State, and there shall be none in Jesus name, amen; provided we do our own part and God will do his part.

Ugbala Kenneth Igwe, Ph.D.

Politics › Corona Virus: Nigeria Is The Most Useless Country Ever, Nnamdi Kanu by Earlystar698(op): 11:56pm On Mar 19, 2020
The most useless country in the world where lawmakers beg a supposedly democratically elected president to address them in a time of unprecedented global pandemic. grin grin grin grin

For starters and for the benefit of those intellectually challenged Nigerians:

1) Nigeria is NOT a nation and can never be. What it is according to Chief Obafemi Awolowo, is a mere geopolitical expression created by a Scottish man and christened "Nigeria" by his English concubine, for purely British economic interest. Anybody referring to Nigeria as a nation cannot be regarded as an intelligent being.

2) Jubril Al-Sudani masquerading as Buhari cannot address the hapless British experimental Guineapigs named 'Nigerians' because Abba Kyari and the rest of the cabal are afraid that he will be unmasked during cross examination by journalists. He will be forced to stand for hours, up close and personal as other heads of state around the world have done and continue to do, to answer searching questions about Covid 19. Jubril is a Sudanese citizen, he has no interest if Corona virus kills all inhabitants of Nigeria. What Abba Kyari dictates is what he does.

Sadly Abba Kyari and his fellow handlers of the Zoo Republic will dare not hold an open press conference in the garden of their Aso Rock because that is tantamount to exposing their fake Buhari because they know the heat of the sun will inevitably melt Jubril's makeup and a combination of close proximity of TV camera lens and questions from journalist will complete the process of unraveling the Fulani fraud of the century. Let them try and see, the world is waiting.

You know that no region in Nigeria commits crime any longer. There are no igbo, Yoruba or Hausa murderers anymore. The perpetrators of all crimes in Nigeria are Fulanis.

Infact, Mr. Ikechukwu who killed his younger brother over an inherited piece of farm land was discovered to be a Fulani herdsman.

What I however find hard to stomach is the fact that the state governors and many politicians and wealthy men of the society still trust and hand over their herds of cows to this herdsmen to rear.

Health › Abuja Doctors Begin Strike, Amidst Coronavirus Crisis by Earlystar698(op): 2:08pm On Mar 17, 2020
As different countries of the world pool resources to combat the coronavirus crisis, doctors in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, on Tuesday announced they were proceeding on an “indefinite strike”.

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Abuja chapter, announced their decision about an hour after the third case of Covid19 was confirmed in Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos.

The doctors said they deliberated extensively on the health threat posed by the coronavirus scare, their work conditions, and patient care before arriving at the “difficult decision.”

In a statement signed by its president, Roland Aigbovo, the association said the mass action followed the failure of the FCT administration to pay them their basic salaries for more than two months.

Mr Aigbovo said their members have been thrown into financial distress due to the nonpayment of their salaries and despite repeated warnings and ultimatum, nothing has been done by authorities.

He said there has been salary irregularities and shortfalls since the migration to the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System by the FCTA.

Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Abuja chapterThe union leader said other health workers who are also affected by the salary shortfalls will join the mass action within 48 hours if their demands “which are the same with ours are not met.”

THIRD CORONAVIRUS CASE

The Lagos State Ministry of Health on Tuesday confirmed the third case of coronavirus in Nigeria.

Akin Abayomi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, broke the news to journalists at the government secretariat Tuesday morning.

“This is a new case independent of the index case of a 30 year-old Nigerian, female, who returned from the UK on 13th March,” the commissioner said.

Mr Abayomi said the patient, who initially showed symptoms of the infection, observed self-Isolation, and thereafter tested positive.

Although Nigeria has so far recorded three cases of the virus, only two are active. The second case, linked to the index case, later tested negative.
