Japan to pay firms to leave China, relocate production elsewhere as part of coronavirus stimulus More than US$2 billion of the country’s record economic stimulus package will be used to help companies move production away from China The move coincides with what should have been a celebration of friendlier ties between the two countries, before the pandemic struck. Japan has earmarked US$2.2 billion of its record economic stimulus package to help its manufacturers shift production out of China as the coronavirus disrupts supply chains between the major trading partners. The extra budget, compiled to try to offset the devastating effects of the pandemic, includes 220 billion yen (US$2 billion) for companies shifting production back to Japan and 23.5 billion yen for those seeking to move production to other countries, according to details of the plan posted online. The move coincides with what should have been a celebration of friendlier ties between the two countries. Chinese President Xi Jinping was supposed to be on a state visit to Japan early this month. But what would have been the first visit of its sort in a decade was postponed a month ago amid the spread of the virus and no new date has been set. China is Japan’s biggest trading partner under normal circumstances, but imports from China slumped by almost half in February as the disease closed factories, in turn starving Japanese manufacturers of necessary components. That has renewed talk of Japanese firms reducing their reliance on China as a manufacturing base. The government’s panel on future investment last month discussed the need for manufacturing of high-added value products to be shifted back to Japan, and for production of other goods to be diversified across Southeast Asia. “There will be something of a shift,” said Shinichi Seki, an economist at the Japan Research Institute, adding that some Japanese companies manufacturing goods in China for export were already considering moving out. “Having this in the budget will definitely provide an impetus.” Companies, such as car makers, that are manufacturing for the Chinese domestic market, will likely stay put, he said. Japan exports a far larger share of parts and partially finished goods to China than other major industrial nations, according to data compiled for the panel. A February survey by Tokyo Shoko Research found 37 per cent of the more than 2,600 companies that responded were diversifying procurement to places other than China amid the coronavirus crisis. It remains to be seen how the policy will affect Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s years-long effort to restore relations with China. We are doing our best to resume economic development,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a briefing Wednesday in Beijing, when asked about the move. “In this process, we hope other countries will act like China and take proper measures to ensure the world economy will be impacted as little as possible and to ensure that supply chains are impacted as little as possible.” The initial stages of the Covid-19 outbreak in China appeared to warm the often chilly ties between the two countries. Japan provided aid in the form of masks and protective gear – and in one case a shipment was accompanied by a fragment of ancient Chinese poetry. In return, it received praise from Beijing. In another step welcomed in Japan, China declared Avigan, an antiviral produced by Japan’s Fujifilm Holdings. to be an effective treatment for the coronavirus, even though it has yet to be approved for that use by the Japanese. Yet many in Japan are inclined to blame China for mishandling the early stages of the outbreak and Abe for not blocking visitors from China sooner. Meanwhile, other issues that have deeply divided the neighbours – including a territorial dispute over East China Sea islands that brought them close to a military clash in 2012-13 – are no nearer resolution. Chinese government ships have continued their patrols around the Japanese-administered islands throughout the crisis, with Japan saying four Chinese ships on Wednesday entered what it sees as its territorial waters. https://amp.scmp.com/news/asia/east-asia/article/3079126/japan-pay-firms-leave-china-relocate-production-elsewhere-part?__twitter_impression=true

The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) on Wednesday, warned the sacked Ohanaeze Secretary-General, Uche Okwukwu, to desist from being a willing tool in the hands of the enemies to sabotage Igbo and Biafra interests because of pecuniary gains. In a swift reaction, Okwukwu described the IPOB leader as a charlatan and inconsequential character who has nothing to offer Ndigbo. In a statement signed by the IPOB Coordinator in Igweocha, Rivers State, David Njoku and made available to the Nation in Owerri, the group described the action of the former scribe as rather shameful saying that for somebody who once prided himself as a MASSOB member and the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo to suddenly make himself a slave to his Fulani masters to sabotage his own tribe was unimaginable. “Instead of him to hide his face in shame to witness against his fellow MASSOB members in the Federal High Court Abuja years ago, Uche Okwukwu has been shamelessly dishing out press statements against Biafra and Igbo interests in his quest to please his pay masters in Aso Rock,” the statement alleged. We know his antecedents as a saboteur which also led to his sack from MASSOB in 2001. We are wondering why Nigeria media and some journalists would still allow someone who has no locus standi in Ohaneze Ndigbo to further rubbish the name of Ohaneze Ndigbo. ” We want to place it on record that Uche Okwukwu has officially been sacked by the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo and should stop talking about anything concerning Ohaneze Ndigbo and IPOB. “We are warning him to henceforth, desist from making derogatory remarks against Biafra and IPOB or be ready to account for his sins on the day of reckoning. “It has also come to the knowledge of IPOB that Uche Okwukwu and his co-travellers are making wasteful efforts to use IPOB to make a selfish bargain.” The statement advised the ex scribe to retrace his steps and disembark from such fruitless journey because “IPOB is unstoppable in its divine march towards Biafra restoration.” Reacting, Okwukwu described Nnamdi Kanu as a charlantant and inconsequential character who has nothing to offer Ndigbo. “The IPOB is destroying the struggle of our people for emancipation and liberation that can only be championed by a very serious minded character not by people who have no understanding, ‘ he told the Nation. Okwukwu who claimed that he has not been sacked, noted that as an Ikwerre man from Rivers State he had been in the forefront to unite Ndigbo, adding that Kanu believes only in using radio to insult and abuse people, appealing to the sentiments of hawkers and pedestrian traders. “This is a man who said the President is dead, he was cloned, he is Jubril, and yet the President is still ruling, still talking and the same Muhammad Buhari that has been known in the last 70-80 years. I will continue to support Buhari.” https://thenationonlineng.net/ipob-warns-ex-ohanaeze-scribe-against-sabotaging-igbo-biafra-interests/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

The spokesman of Iran’s health ministry has said that figures of coronavirus infections and deaths published by China’s government was a “bitter joke”. Kianush Jahanpur in a video media conference March 5 said, “It seems statistics from China was a bitter joke, because many in the world thought this is just like influenza, with fewer deaths. This [impression] were based on reports from China and now it seems China made a bitter joke with the rest of the world”. Jahanpur added, “If in China they say an epidemic was controlled in two months, one should really think about it”. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also on Friday questioned information received from China, complaining that it led the United States to face more challenges in dealing with the epidemic. In recent days world media has also questioned coronavirus statistics published by China, which says in Wuhan, the epicenter of the epidemic 2,500 people lost their lives, while the death toll is much higher in European countries and the United States, which have modern or advanced medical infrastructure. The death rate per one million people in Italy and Spain is around 250, while China’s official death rate is just 2. As of April 4, the U.S. deaths per one million were 26. https://en.radiofarda.com/amp/iran-official-calls-china-s-coronavirus-figures-a-bitter-joke-/30532450.html?__twitter_impression=true
