A Nigerian Drug Traficker in Philadelphia or Dallas has just hit $200,000 from a Deal, he needs to move the Cash back to Nigeria, its a Dirty Money Acquired through an Illegitimate means, the Goal is to keep it from coming to the attention of someone else who might feel like they have some claim to the money or Financial Intelligence Agents in the USA & in Nigeria, the point is to make the money disappear in form of Physical Cash As Soon as Possible

My thoughts as well. How can somebody be selling a 2006 VW passat for 1.4M in Nigeria?. Can you even buy a salvaged one for $10K in the US?. Check some car prices they advertise here and be the judge. As a matter of fact, If I wan buy motor for naija, I'd rather not buy it from here because it'll be cheaper to purchase it in Nigeria.

Another nairalander also advertised a 2004 passat for N900K both cost and shipment. N900K is about $6K. How possible will he get the car for $4k and another nairalander was asking him whether the 900K includes clearing? Na greed dey kill people. grin grin grin
Celebrities / Re: Etim Esin Sues JJ Okocha For Public Disgrace by earTHMama: 6:21am On Feb 07, 2009
Abeg Spikey, how can you comapre Russel Brand with this one? And even then, he resigned. Moreover, his offence was commited on the job. This incident has no bearing whatsoever with Etim's job. Let us call a spade a spade. If Etim had stolen the phone, I'd have understood Toyin Subair's stance. Nigerians are used to taking unjustified actions because nothing works in that country. As a lawyer, the least the Toyin could have done was wait for the outcome of the case before taking his own independent action. This way, it just seems like they are all trying to cow Etim Esin into submission.

What do you mean?. Is it because they don't rate the media in Nigeria?. Etim surely started a broil that may lead to HITV losing most of their viewers because they are Okocha's fan. Do you know how much they will lose in TV Ads? . If Etim had been steady with his story, it would've been a different thing altogether but different versions from the same man and only if he can shut the hell up and let his lawyer do the job.

According to Etim, he is out to clear his name; Yeah right, by asking for N100M?. How will 100M clear his name?  Furthermore, he continued by scandalizing Okocha's name from him making it before Okocha to Okocha building a night club instead of a sports academy. How did these comments enter into the equation?. What do you think comments like that will suggest to a judge?. Is Okocha's money a property of the federal govt?. Okocha can move to Las vegas tomorrow with his money and blew them up in one year, that's his damn  business. Is every Nigerian international building sports academies in Nigeria, how much less Okocha that just stopped playing soccer yesterday.

How many did Yekini, Adepoju, OKey Uche, Uche Okafor, Ezeugo, Iroha, Keshi, Emenalo, Finidi, Amokachi, Chidi Nwanu, Oliseh etc build?. Were they also not successful Nigerian soccer internationals?.

The foolish Etim that is saying this jumped bail in Spain or Belgium and came back to Nigeria with small coins. What did he do for HIMSELF with the little money he made in his  brief  career in Europe?. Paint Lagos red with his convertible 3 series BMW, bleeped every ashewo in every high brow night club in lagos and retired himself with ganja. And he has the guts to talk about Okocha that came home with something at least.

I will say it again, Etim Esin is suffering from inferiority complex and frustration. It ain't easy watching guys making something out of the same trade you were good at. What he doesn't know is that God opens another door if the old one closes. All he needed to do was to chill out with his HITV job, hang around old internationals and get small busineses and connections from them. With time, he'll become a big TV star in the sports media and may soon start endorsing products for a fee rather, he chose the shorter cut like the cursed man he is.  Do you know how much successful a soccer mag published by him may be in Nigeria? No matter how you look at it, he may think he is on top now because he is dragging Okocha's name to the mud, he will still lose because his fans that have a soft spot for okocha will not enjoy his face on TV anymore. Okocha has a higher star power than him, may also retire to private life and enjoy his millions but Etim sure needs a good public image  at least for now. If okocha got over the rumour that his wife had a biracial child, he can surely get over this one.

As a lawyer, the least the Toyin could have done was wait for the outcome of the case before taking his own independent action. This way, it just seems like they are all trying to cow Etim Esin into submission.
This is not a Nigerian thing. How many senators or celebrities lose their jobs or endorsements just because someone accused them of rape even though they pled not guilty?. Didn't Jonathan Akpoborie get suspended in his club (VFB Stuttgart) because his vessel was involved in child trafficking and the Nigerian media somehow accused him of it? Was he not suspended and nearly fired by the club over just an accussation by a Nigerian newspaper?.

Was Taribo West not suspended in his German club  because his Nigerian wife that was still in Nigeria threatened fire and brimstone over divorcing him?

between etim and okocha, someone is lying and whoever is lying is the greatest actor Nigeria have ever produced
There are no more lies in the story since both of them have agreed that Etim was searched. Both of them also agreed that neither Okocha nor his wife was present at that time BUT the bone of contention here is that Etim is claiming that he was set up to be humiliated. You may now ask yourself, over what? Why should Okocha set Etim up?

Again,
I thought Keyamo is a criminal lawyer, what is he doing with a civil case?. Is that how Nigerian lawyers work?

But he had no reason to lie about his profit. It will only take a kaduna resident to come here and disprove his story. If they can sell an end of discussion for that amount in kaduna, it's worth a try.

So because he has a ruined career is an excuse to be treated like a dog and labelled a Barawo abi? I'll try to keep in mind the fact that Nigeria is a country where poor people with ruined careers have to shut up and take crap because of their ruined careers. What a bleeping joke
Nobody made him poor. He ruined himself. I used to sympathize with him over this issue until other versions of the gist started coming out. Are we trying to mortify Okocha because he is rich?. Everybody both rich and poor deserves justice and in this case I think Etim is taking advantage of the fact that Okocha will be the party to be afraid of his integrity.

Piece these stories together and draw your inference:
1St report: Okocha humiliated me by searching only me in his house.

2nd story from the same Etim: Okay, it wasn't Okocha that searched me, it was some other guest at the party. Although he later came out and stopped the frisking, apologised to those that were frisked and gave my wife and me some money.

Okocha's version: I wasn't aware of it although I took responsibility b/c it was in my house[Oyibo mentality because a typical African man will tell you that even if it was in his house nko?, come carry me now]. He never denied Etim was searched, accepted responsibility, apologised to him and gave him some xmas gift.

Etim :
Okocha gave me only 50K and not 100k oo. Foolish guy still collected the money and said thank you.
If i want money, I'll go and meet IBB: if you can easily get some money off IBB, you wouldn't be busy accepting gifts from Okocha for over 15 years.

Who was Okocha when I was Etim?; Where was Okocha when iwuanyanwu bought me a new car? sarcasm and bad belle at its height.

My conclusion
: Only Etim knows what is frustrating him. I must admit though that it must be frustrating socializing with your mates when you have nothing to show for it just because of a damn pussy. It must be frustrating so any misbehaviour from Etim should be excused.

sarcasm at play, yes a 1.8 million car is worth loosing to armed robbers and accidents en route kaduna for 700k profit, nice one
Is it not worth it? N700K is almost 50% profit. It's worth taking to Iraq sef.
Celebrities / Re: Etim Esin Sues JJ Okocha For Public Disgrace by earTHMama: 6:06pm On Feb 06, 2009
Etim Esin shut up! Its not Okocha's fault that you ruined your career.
Don't mind him. He is doing this because he knows that the typical Nigerian society will always side the poorer person out of pity. When i read comments like the one below, I discovered that he's just trying to make headlines.

He also said Okocha gave him N50,000 as Christmas gift and not N100,000 as reported and that the money was given before the incident.

“Again, it’s not about money. It’s about my integrity. The phone was not eventually found on me. I have a lovely wife and I’m not as poor as people think. If I need money I could go to former President Ibrahim Babangida who is the senior Maradona. We are only two in the country. He did things for me when I was playing for Nigeria. I have made name.

I made name before Okocha. Where was Okocha when Iwuanyanwu gave me a brand new car? Where was Okocha when I brought my first convertible into Nigeria? Obesere, the musician has a football academy, trying to develop football, Okocha has a night club. Is that how to work for football?

This is a very informative and refreshing thread. I applaud the contributors for the maturity displayed.

@Emperoh, I like a lot of the points you made. You disagreed with posters without being disagreeable. This business, as you mentioned is a very capital intensive one, and one must be very creative to maximize profits.
It depends on what you mean by being creative. Someone here claim they reset the odometer(I don't know how possible that is for digital ones) or buy new odometers to change a high one. Is that also part of creativity in the business since it maximizes profits?

I think you find these low prices in Lagos, for the most part primarily because just about every household now has cars for sale. There is a glut of cars in Lagos and many are willing to get rid of them at very low prices just to recoup their costs. I bought 3 End of discussions in Lagos  only 2 weeks ago for N1.8 and sold them for N2.5million each in Kaduna because that is the market price for those cars in Kaduna. Its a matter of supply and demand in many cases.
A very good business move(700k per car) and surely worth the risk of moving the vehicles from lagos to kaduna.

In addition to market forces, unscrupulous "dealers" buy cars with very high mileage (180,000 - 230,000) at very low prices and import them to Nigeria, roll back the mileage, and sell them for these ridiculously low prices. Many potential nairalanders who requested VIN checks  find out about these odometer rollbacks - unfortunately, these cases are not few and far in between.
See question in my first response.

Many of these dealers also smuggle cars out of Lagos ports so they end up paying only a fraction of the customs clearing costs.  As Emperor stated above, profit margin on an imported used car could be as low as N250,000 - Now if a smuggler pays N250,000 less to get his car to Nigeria, then he can offer these ridiculously low prices.
Won't you notice it from the clearing documents?

Thankfully, the government just instituted the e-payment system even for RORO vehicles - that should reduce smuggling and other corrupt activities in our ports.

Cheers,
J
How does it work?

If a man like Okocha throws a party and a guest complains of a missing fone, all he should do is call the guest in private, apologize and probably replace the handset, rather than gettin the whole guests searched, there's actually no wisdom in that, assuming people like mike adenuga, wole soyinka or even one of his former bolton's players were present, would he allow that. There's somthing really phony about this story. As for TONY he is just a pussy and one day he'll definately get f-u-c-k-e-d.

You don't know whose phone was missing and the value of the information inside the phone which may too dangerous to leave in the hands of a stranger.

EFCC pays N3m to victim of illegal detention

LAGOS—The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reiterated its determination to work within the ambit of the law in its fight against all forms of economic crimes and corruption in the country.

The assurance was given yesterday by the Chairman of the Commission, Mrs. Farida Waziri, when she presented a cheque of N3 million to Dr. Sylvester Odigie, a Lagos-based businessman as damages for his wrongful detention by the Commission between May 24 and July 6, 2006.

The presentation of the cheque was in obedience to an Abuja High Court order. While presenting the letter of instruction to Odigie, the EFCC boss stressed that the gesture was in fulfilment of the Commission’s resolve to respect court judgments and operate within the ambit of the law in its fight against corruption.

“As a law enforcement agency, we have chosen to abide by this court judgment to further buttress our determination to always work within the ambit of the rule of law”, she said, adding that the rule of law policy as exemplified by the Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua’s administration has given beauty to the practice of democracy in the country.

The EFCC chair assured Nigerians that as a law enforcement agency, the Commission was determined not to repeat the mistakes of the past. “We are committed to upholding and protecting the laws we are established to enforce”, she said.

Reacting to the development, Dr Odigie, who said he was wrongfully detained by the EFCC between May and July 2006 over some land transactions, expressed gratitude to the chairperson of the commission, for boldly upholding the court order.

“This is a special day. I never knew this day will ever come in Nigeria. It is here, and I want the world to know that this is a new era altogether, an era of rule of law.”

He said Mrs. Waziri was a bold woman, who must be supported by Nigerians. “She had an easy way out and could as well say the incident did not happen at her own time”, he said.

Dr. Odigie also thanked the Commission, the judiciary and the government saying that his prayer was for God to grant the judiciary the courage and wisdom to do the right thing, as it is the last hope of the common Nigerian.

Court re-opens Savannah Bank, 7 yrs after

Written by Ise-Oluwa Ige

*Grants 18 months to re-capitalise

ABUJA—RENEWED hope came the way of over 85,000 bank shareholders and more than 750,000 depositors as the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja yesterday ordered the Central Bank (CBN) to restore, with immediate effect, the operational licence of Savannah Bank of Nigeria (SBN).

The order followed its findings that the bank was shut in bad faith, with its about 3,000-strong workforce abruptly thrown into the unemployment market.

In a unanimous judgment that lasted about two hours by a three-member panel of the Abuja division of the Court of Appeal, the court tongue-lashed both the CBN and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) for unjustifiably revoking the licence of the bank. The court awarded a total N100 million damages against the financial regulatory bodies.

Besides, the appellate court yesterday gave Savannah Bank 18 months to recapitalise even as it ordered the two regulatory financial institutions in the country (CBN and NDIC) not to take over, seal up, or use men of the Nigeria Police Force to obstruct the bank from operating nationwide.

By implication, respite has come the way of the bank’s 85,000 shareholders, and over 750,000 depositors who lost access to their funds more than seven years ago and over 3,000 workers thrown into the unemployment market and their numerous dependents.

Nwobodo's counsel hails judgement

Counsel to Chief Jim Nwobodo, majority shareholder in Savannah Bank, Mr Oluwemimo Ogunde yesterday expressed delight at the court’s verdict, saying although the road was long and tortuous but that the most important thing was that justice had come eventually.

His words: “On the strength of this judgment, we will approach the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to give us the state of affairs of the bank, tell us the amount of money found in the vault and the furniture for proper handover to the Board.

“When we know how much we have, then we can be talking about recapitalization.

“We expect the CBN and the NDIC to give us our accounts in order to settle our liabilities. We want to satisfy our customers. No one must lose out, particularly those who have committed their monies.

“Above all, we are grateful to God. We are grateful to our fearless judiciary because it takes courage to deliver this type of judgment. We want to thank all our customers and depositors and shareholders who have stood by us.

“You would recall that sometime ago, Savannah Bank was de-listed from the Stock Market and we now hope that it will be re-listed.

“Hopefully, we will re-open soon to the public,” he said adding that though N100million damages was awarded but that it could not pay for the damage that had been done to the bank, its depositors, shareholders and others in seven years.

Cautious optimism

However, sources close to Chief Nwobodo yesterday said that events are still being watched as they unfold. One of his close aides who declined to be named said that while the judgement was both welcome and a vindication of his principal, the attitude is to wait and see.

“We are still watching events as they unfold. You know, the authorities might appeal this judgement, which in practical terms is a stay of execution. So we are watching events, though the judgement is welcome and a vindication of the stance that the bank was neither failed nor distressed at the time its operating license was withdrawn.”

The CBN had on February 17, 2002 ordered the closure of the Savannah Bank. The decision to close it down then was announced in Lagos at a media briefing addressed by the CBN’s Director of Banking Supervision, Mr. Ignatius Imala.

The CBN had cited the bank’s alleged poor state of health, mismanagement and other information that it had allegedly given to the regulatory authorities as reasons for its closure.

But Savannah Bank had denied the allegation that it was ailing at the time it was closed down and had imputed political motive as reason for the closure.

Savannah Bank's N100bn lawsuit

The bank itself which protested the closure also slammed a N100 billion suit against the two financial sector regulators, CBN and NDIC, and the Inspector-General of Police.

CBN was sued by Savannah Bank over seizure of its operational licence, NDIC was joined because of its proposed plan to sell the assets of the bank to settle the bank’s depositors while IGP was sued because of his role in ensuring that all the banking premises of the bank nationwide were sealed.

The case was filed by the late former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Clement Akpamgbo (SAN) at the registry of the Federal high court sitting in Abuja.

But when he fell sick, one of his men and now a member of the inner bar, Chief Chris Uche (SAN) took over the prosecution of the case.

Uche handled the case for a long time before the two chambers of Joe Gyari Gadzama (SAN) and Oluwemimo Ogunde took over the prosecution of the case till judgment yesterday.

It would also be recalled that when the matter was filed fresh, Justice Okechukwu Okeke was assigned to hear the matter but he could not go far before he was transferred from Abuja and same matter was re-assigned to Justice Stephen Jonah Adah who later gave judgment against Savannah Bank.

The verdict of the trial court was taken on appeal and the Court of Appeal gave judgment against both the CBN and the NDIC. In the suit filed by Savannah Bank, it had maintained that its closure was done with evil intention.

Said the bank: “the plaintiffs 85,000 shareholders have been dispossessed, while over 750,000 depositors have lost their funds. Over 3,000 workers have been thrown into unemployment, despair and anguish with same fate on their numerous dependents.

“The forced, unexpected and unjustified closure has caused 14 known direct deaths of the bank’s customers whose only crime was to lodge their hard earned money in a bank the defendants (and whoever they represent) disliked its present ownership structure and decided to descend on without considering the impact and consequence on innocent customers.

“The defendants have caused the plaintiff to lose several hundred of thousands of customers, old, new and prospective as a result of the acts of the defendants in trying to kill the bank.

“In the course of chasing out the plaintiffs, staff and security from the bank, the defendants and their agents invaded the vaults of the plaintiffs and looted over N500 million cash from the vaults which they have failed to account for,” added Savannah bank.

The bank had consequently asked the court to award in its favour a sum of N100 billion as special, exemplary and general damages for willful disruption of the plaintiff’s banking business and loss of business and profits throughout Nigeria from February 18, 2002 till judgment.

Savannah Bank had also asked for an order of the court to set aside the order of revocation of its banking licence, direct the CBN to re-issue it the licence or restore the revoked one alternatively even as it wanted the court to compel them to open its business premises nationwide and stop them from further sealing it off, all of which were granted yesterday.

Depositors, shareholders react

One of the shareholders of the bank, Alhaji Gbadebo Olatokubo who also welcomed the court’s judgment said that great hurdles lie ahead of the bank.

“I am seriously apprehensive about how the bank is going to operate because banking has moved from where Savannah Bank stopped.

“Challenges in terms of information technology, depositors’ harmonization, recruitment of new hands and composition of the management and board and more importantly getting the confidence of Nigerians are some of the problems staring the bank in the face,” Olatokunbo said.

Olatokunbo who was a former Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Shareholders Solidarity Association (NSSA) said that the court’s decision has clearly shown that the “CBN is not the God it plays but an institution supported and driven by public funds.”

Mr Sam Ogbemudje, a lawyer said the judgment had further vindicated the judiciary as the last hope of the common man.

Ogbemudje said that the import of the ruling which he described as a warning signal to the political class is that people in authority should let their actions be guided by the rule of law.

“Democracy is the foundation of sustainable economic growth and people in authority must learn to appreciate that they cannot always do what they want without recourse to the rule of law,’’ Ogbemudje said.

The Managing Director of H,J. Trust and Investment Ltd, Mr Harrison Owoh described the court’s judgment as a welcome development, giving the circumstances that led to the closure of Savannah Bank Plc.

“The Court of Appeal decision to me remains a decisive judgment that has corrected the political undertone which tainted the revocation of the operating license of Savannah.

“Most Nigerians, at the time the bank’s license was revoked knew that Savannah was buoyant and solvent more than some of the banks that were given the opportunity to recapitalise,” Owoh said.

He also urged the owners of the bank to make effective use of the opportunity offered by the court pronouncement by settling their internal differences.

UK: Brown appoints Damilola's father special envoy
From Tunde Oyedoyin, London

RICHARD Taylor, the father of murdered schoolboy, Damilola Taylor, has been appointed a special envoy on youth violence and knife crimes by the British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. Taylor was called to 10 Downing Street yesterday morning and after a private meeting with Mr. Brown, he was given a letter of appointment.

advertisement

Speaking exclusively to The Guardian, Taylor revealed that the PM had, during the eighth-year memorial service of his son last November, promised that "he would work with me, but I didn't know how." The Prime Minister "even had a series of meetings with different people-but things only became clear as to what role I was to play sometime last week. " Not surprisingly, "he invited me specially this morning-Thursday- and was so pleased that I accepted the offer."

He said Brown "felt the role had to be given to me and he was very specific that the orientation of youths, particularly those of the Afro-Carribean origin has to change." Brown, according to Taylor, "was also particularly happy that I never looked back since my son was tragically taken away," in November 2000.

Although it is an unpaid position, "I'll be reporting directly to the Prime Minister and will be briefing him on what we're doing in the communities. " Taylor disclosed further that by virtue of the role, " I will be his mouthpiece in the community and we'll be speaking to the police," among others.

Taylor, who had last year won a "Pride of Britain," award for his tireless campaign against knife crimes. He was told by Brown that he " will be able to share the experiences of families who have directly been affected by youth violence and their thoughts on how young people's behaviour can be changed."

Call Charles Oputa aka Charly Boy a weird one and his wife, Diane would frowns and confront you with a question, “Does he seem weird to you?”

Charly Boy a weird one and his wife

advertisement

But having spent 30 years of her life with the maverick musician cum social crusader, Diane is just the best person to give intimate account.

Her words, “Charles is a family person, he takes care of his family very well. If he has not proven to be a family man, I probably would not have been in Nigeria in the first place. He has been a good husband and father to his children.”

The couple was the cynosure of eyes at Sheraton Hotel and Towers last week as they celebrated 30 unbroken years of their union which has blossomed with three grown up children. The strictly private event which also marked the American born lady’s birthday was witnessed only by the media.

She explained in this interview the secrets of her marriage as well as how she effectively plays the role of a wife and mother.

Excerpts:

Congratulations, how old are you?

I don’t think it’s necessary to disclose my age. Really, I am as old as I feel, if you ask me I still feel 26 or 30.

How has it been living in Nigeria with a Nigerian for 30 years?

Sometime I wonder if it is really up to 30 years. Maybe it’s because one is just enjoying the ride, I guess. When you are comfortable and you do the things you like to do and you are around people that you enjoy, you wouldn’t just realize when that time is going by. But it is going by because I see my children in College graduating with first degrees, definitely something is changing around me. It is a long journey and we have had ups and downs within the 30 years that we have been together. But we are happy together. A lot of couples haven’t got that far-we are really privileged.

How are you coping with a weird personality as Charly Boy?

Does he seem weird to you? He really came up with a nice idea and surprised me. I knew he wanted to do something but I didn’t know it was going to take the shape it took. My ideal thing would have been to go to a secluded place, maybe a resort to relax. But he likes to be around people and do things in the open. He went out of his way to do this. So I am just going to soak it all in and take it as it comes.

What have you enjoyed most?

Companionship. Like I said, all couples have their ups and downs but we have been able to sort things out by ourselves. Also we communicate a lot. Talking is a key thing in any relationship and we always point this out anytime we are interviewed. Honesty and agreement are also important. We strive to make things good for ourselves and our extended family including our children and parents. We look beyond just ourselves.

What is the hard part of it?

I guess it is just the small things that every couple experiences in a relationship.

It may be disagreement in raising the kids among others. I also have step children to look after. The bottom-line is the resolve by both of us to make the relationship work.

Tell us about your home?

I have seven kids all together out of which three are mine biologically children and the rest are step children. We are all very close. We reprimand those who are not doing well and commend those who are doing well. We try and work with them and they know they have our love as parents. They don’t really look at me as their step mum and that is how I always have wanted it to be. They all call me by my first name. I hate it when they use the appellation ‘Ma’ for me. It hurts me. One of my step children came to Nigeria some years back and when he saw me he was overwhelmed. He never knew that a step mother can have such a positive influence on one’s life.

Are there things you would have wanted to do differently, if you have the chance?

With regards to coming to Nigeria, I don’t think I would have changed anything. But I think if someone had told me that I would come and live in Nigeria and have kids here, I would have told whoever the person is that it was not possible. The first time I came to Nigeria, I wanted to stay for three months but I ended up staying for nine months. So, it’s not about the country but the person who brought me to Nigeria. I don’t want to brag but I am grateful to God for my relationship.

What got you hooked to him?

From the beginning, meeting Charles was different because he was a Nigerian. I have never really gone out with a Nigerian. I have a lot of American boyfriends but not a Nigerian. I really wanted to know much about a Nigerian man and his culture and people. That was what really intrigued me.

How has he been coping at the home front?

He takes care of his family very well. If he has not proven to be a family man, I probably would not have been in Nigeria in the first place. He has been a good husband and father to his children.

How have you been on good terms with his other kids?

The children we are talking about are all Americans, and only one is in Nigeria. It is because of the love I have for my husband and his family. At the end of the day, I am looking the long road not the immediate. It is not a selfish thing here. The children have to live together after Charles and I would have gone. They have a common bond in their father and that is why I do what I do?

Advice for young couples

I think they have to first get it right from the start. I think dating is very important. You need to know what you want to get yourself into. For women, it is not because the clock is ticking and for men, it is not about what you have. But you need to know the person you want to spend your life with before you commit yourself. We make mistakes but people have to be careful. One of the things that work for me and my husband is that he is not a typically and culturally Nigerian man, maybe it is because of his exposure.

Why do you think celebrity marriage crash in Nigeria?

Although, celebrity marriages are not different from any other marriage, however, the bottom-line is that both parties have to know what they want from the start. The society and your fans are not leaving in your home with you. If you know your career is first then you should not be married. We see what happened abroad where celebrities marry four or five times and the whole essence of marriage is all messed up. It is difficult but one needs to stay focused.

‘I had male attention, money and fame’
• It got into my head
Friday, February 6, 2009

Popular actress and one time top model Edith in this interview talks about how she got into modelling and acting. Edith Anyalogu in her own words.

Edith Uba Anyalogu.

Background

I am Edith Uba Anyalogu. Before I got married I was known as Edith Jayne Azuh. I was born in Lagos Island Maternity. I come from a family of eight children and I am the first child of the family of four girls and four boys. I am from Delta State, the Igbo speaking part of Aniocha Local Government Area. I attended Anglican Girls Primary School Lagos. Baptist Girls High School Agbor I finished off at Ansar-ud-deen Grammar School Randle Avenue Surulere. I later got admission into Lagos State University to study Mass Communication.

On modelling

I have always loved the entertainment world. I have always wanted to be an actress but my father never liked the idea. Eventually he accepted. I started out as a model. I was discovered by a photographer called Ntun Patel he is an Indian. He was into industrial and wildlife photography. He discovered that I have a very photogenic face and that was how I started modelling for him. What I earned back then was good but can not be compared to what models earn now.

On acting

I met Mike Enahoro and he saw that acting talent in me. And he auditioned me as an hostess for his programme ‘Health Wise’. Before I started presenting the programme he had tried me out as a guest on ‘Family Menu’ a network television programme. ‘Health Wise was an health programme where doctors discussed health issues and gave solutions to them. I got a lot of exposure from presenting the programme. I met all kinds of personalities, moved with the big names of journalism world. Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) and the National Arts Theatre became my second home back then. I actually started my acting career on stage with Rasheeed Gbadamosi’s ‘Sing The Old Song For Me’ in 1985. I also participated in ‘Greener Grass’, Ayo Oluwasanmi’s ‘Oriki Of A Grasshopper’. I later met Bayo Oduneye the former director National Troupe and that was it everything just clicked. And other television jobs followed and that was how I went from stage to television.

Working on stage is tedious it’s back breaking. More tasking more demanding than television. As far as I am concerned television is a piece of cake. You can take it easy make all your mistakes, and take after take. It’s so easy but stage is not like that.

My biggest challenge was my voice. I have a very soft voice but I worked on it. But there were other things I had to my favour. I had presence good at interpretation and when it comes to emotions I am the person to beat. So that sort of made up for the weak voice that I had. So whatever I was unable to say well enough to be heard with my voice I said with my body and with my emotions. My first major lead role on stage was playing Benita in ‘Rising in the Sun’ in 1989. And a lot of other roles followed.

On sex for role

No man has been able to force himself on me. Charm, sweet talk, money and all that. I f I don’t want you, I don’t want you. Not once have I ever had to sleep with a man to get a job. If I was good for the job I was good for the job. I take pride in saying that I am the one that will accept the man or not. I will look you in the eye and say no. In a very nice way. The kind of man that I hate is the type that thinks his money can get me. That kind of man does not have respect for himself and the woman. He might as well go to the veterinary store to buy a dog or a cat.

On relationship

Fame, the attention got in to my head. I walked into a room and all eyes are on me dazzling gorgeous male eyes are on me. It is not easy to live with that kind of attention as a woman . It just sometimes gets into your head. of course, I had male attention, fame, money and connections too. Almost any man that I wanted I could have and these were some of the things that affected my relationship then.

I will be a liar if I said I didn’t found love before I met my husband. Sure I was in one or two relationships that I thought would work but just didn’t . If you are wise and you are not easily carried away and you have self control you will know what is right and good for you and what is not. But sometimes we attach the wrong reasons to things.

Where we should be looking for values we are looking for temporary reasons. Women sometimes put premium on money, connections, and good looks before considering marriage. Mundane things that do not keep a relationship intact. I made those mistakes at first. I was swayed by the wrong reasons to accept a proposal. But I thank God that I am not that kind of woman that get carried away by a man. I just knew that I could never marry a man who was not a Christian and a friend. I knew I never wanted to have a stiff person for a husband and we will just be happy only when we are with other people. Until that came along in my husband I just couldn’t settle down with any other man.

hausa guys have the biggest mojos but don't know how to use it allegedly o. Igbo guys are just there and do not know how to use their tongues. Apparently, igbo men think the tongue is only meant for sucking apu and isiewu tongue tongue
