My 5 Takeaways from the VAT debate
For me, every situation provides a learning opportunity. The issues thrown up by the VAT debate have helped me to know what I didn't know before now.
Here are my takeaways or what I have learnt so far.
1. Headquarters Effect: I have never heard the phrase before. Now, I know what this means, thanks to the tax experts who have educated us on why Lagos holds the diadem as the biggest contributor to VAT revenue. Companies that have their Headquarters in Lagos with operations across the country remit all VAT collections through their head office in Lagos. A chunk of what is collected as VAT in Lagos are activities that took place outside Lagos. Revealing!

2. Derivation Principle: Like oil producing states that enjoy 13% derivation from proceed of oil production, 36 states plus FCT also enjoy 20% derivation from VAT proceeds before equality of states and population are factored into sharing formula. So, the oil producing states are not the only states enjoying derivation. Great to know!

3. VAT on Agricultural produce: By deliberate design of the Federal Government, VAT is not charged on some agricultural products to make food cheap and affordable. Pity!

4. Father Xmas FG: More than 50% of the VAT revenues are from imports via Customs, Port Authority and Federal government contracts across MDAs. The Federal government just collects its own money, take 15% and share 85% of total sum to states and local government. Plenty free lunch in Freetown still!

5. Ethnic Baiting Works: If you want to provoke popular sentiments to win support for any self-serving agenda in Nigeria, you don't need to be imaginative. Just say there is 'injustice' in Nigeria and that the resources of one part of the country is used to prop up the other part. Wait to see people whose states are sponging off Federal largese become emergency placard-carrying freedom fighters. Pathetic!


Anyway, make people calm down. Running a country is different from running a business. No part of Nigeria is useless. Every part is doing their bit. We only need to produce more and charge appropriate taxes across board. There's no parasite in this country only if you remove your bigotry glasses...

The church thoroughly admits that NT is badly altered, and earliest copies of NT don't date before year 200. So not only the Aramaic original language of Jesus was never documented, hence his original sayings are permanently lost, but the Greek writings (a language Jesus never spoke) had been badly corrupted. People today generally believe that there is only ONE Bible, and ONE version of any given verse of the Bible. As we have begun to see, this is far from true. All Bibles in our possession today (Such as the KJV, the NRSV, the NASV, NIV,...etc.) are the result of extensive cutting and pasting from these various manuscripts with no single one being the definitive reference. There are countless cases where a paragraph shows up in one "ancient manuscript" but is totally missing from many others. For instance, Mark 16:8-20 (twelve whole verses) is completely missing from the most ancient manuscripts available today but show up in more recent "ancient manuscripts." There are also many documented cases where even geographical locations are completely different from one ancient manuscript to the next. For instance, in the "Samaritan Pentateuch manuscript," Deuteronomy 27:4 speaks of "mount Gerizim," while in the "Hebrew manuscript" the exact same verse speaks of "mount Ebal." From Deuteronomy 27:12-13 we can see that these are two distinctly different locations. Similarly, Luke 4:44 in some "ancient manuscripts" mentions "Synagogues of Judea," others mention "Synagogues of Galilee." This is only a sampling, a comprehensive listing would require a book of its own.

There are countless examples in the Bible where verses of a questionable nature are included in the text without any disclaimer telling the reader that many scholars and translators have serious reservations as to their authenticity. The King James Version of the Bible (Also known as the "Authorized Version", the one in the hands of the majority of Christendom today, is one of the most notorious in this regard. It gives the reader absolutely no clue as to the questionable nature of such verses. However, more recent translations of the Bible are now beginning to be a little more honest and forthcoming in this regard. For example, the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible, by Oxford Press, has adopted an extremely subtle system of bracketing the most glaring examples of such questionable verses with double square brackets ([[ ]]). It is highly unlikely that the casual reader will realize the true function these brackets serve. Examples of this are the story of the "woman taken in adultery" in John 7:53-8:11, as well as Mark 16:9-20 (Jesus' resurrection and return), and Luke 23:34 (which, interestingly enough, is there to confirm the prophesy of Isaiah 53:12).....and so forth.

For example, with regard to John 8:1-11, the commentators of this Bible say in very small print at the bottom of the page:

"The most ancient authorities lack 7.53-8.11; other authorities add the passage here or after 7.36 or after 21.25 or after Luke 21.38 with variations of text; some mark the text as doubtful."

Many supported Governor Wike's decision to be collecting VAT because they say "the North contributes nothing and they want to be collecting". But if they know their facts they will understand that they are digging a hole for themselves. They will realize it is all of us that will suffer when States collect VAT.
First of all, after Lagos, the next place that contributes the highest VAT (20%) is the FCT which is in the North. Yes this is followed by Rivers at 6% but Kano is next with 5% and this is followed by Kaduna. So no, it is not as you have been misinformed. The only special case is Lagos. So your State will suffer. Even Lagos will suffer with much more people migrating there. When resources are shared among Federating Units, it is shallow to always think it is injustice. Give Lagos 100% of it's VAT, Mukaila from Sokoto, Chinedu from Aba and even Lasisi from Osun will all migrate there. So what is the point again?

It seems you are very dumb and don't understand English. The northern states like Kano that are in the top VAT contributors are contributing the VAT gotten from states like rivers and Lagos resources in the form of FAAC which includes VAT as their VAT. Kano and Karina has no money of their own. The money they have is from southern oil wealth, southern seaports, southern remittance of her overseas citizens, southern manufacturing companies....
Abuja is just a gaint sinkhole. The place will not exist if not for it been an FCT. No value in the place. Whatever Abuja has its because of the FG Collects the revenue gotten from southern resources to share. Kaduna is another ridiculous city like Abuja. The place has the most FG agencies after Abuja is not even more than Abuja. Again FG funding gotten from southern resources flowing through there. Your agriculture survives on FG investment again from southern resources.

Now, they are instigating a VAT war with FG to cover the monumental failure in delivering governance to their people & the mindless terrorism on the people of Niger Delta recently uncovered in NDDC.

The North is capable of functioning independently. The example of Kaduna overtaking Kano in that ranking of viable states is a theory easy to analyze.
Before oil rents distracted northern political elites, the Native Authority system had far-reaching tax-collecting structures and a flourishing agrarian economy servicing the needs of the region. What the North achieved in that system is unfortunately still the high-point of the region today. Without oil rents, they built Ahmadu Bello University, which is still the largest in sub-Saharan Africa and Ahmadu Bello Stadium, one of the best sports facilities then. They also set up New Nigerian Development Company, the largest black-owned conglomerate in Sub-Saharan Africa then.
The North of that agrarian era was an industrial hub, as the policymakers built new cities, textile factories, hospitals and distinguished institutions, one of which was the prestigious Kaduna Polytechnic, which was also the largest of its kind in Africa south of the Sahara then. Their overly spoon-fed successors, unfortunately, lack this ambition and the reason is this jamboree bankrolled by the South which, evidently, is not sustainable.
