THE MEANING AND IMPORTANCE OF AGRICULTURE

1.1 definition and scope of agriculture
Agriculture is defined as the cultivation of the land for growing of
crops and rearing animals for the use of man. The crops and animals are
used in form of food, clothing, shelter, ornaments and transport.
Agriculture is centered majorly about farming. In other word Agriculture
is simply the art of farming. The farm is where crops and animals are
produced.
In any case, Agriculture is more than just production; it also
involves the processing of the crops and animal products,
transportation, storage and selling them to the consumers.
So the subject that deals with the study of Agriculture in schools is
known as Agricultural Science.

1.2 Origin and development of Agriculture
The modern Agriculture today began with the early men. To get food, they
carried out hunting of animals in the bush and collecting wild fruits
and useful forest things. The sources of were not enough as the early
men began to increase in number. Later, the people observed that the
seeds previously thrown away germinated, grew into trees and started to
produce fruits. Animals caught alive were also kept till needed. Through
these, planting of crops and keeping of animals started, the people
began to have settled life. To till the land, crude implement were
invented and they were able to provide enough food for the family.
With the improvement on simple farm tools and increased population, the
people started to produce more than the family needed, as a result the
exchange of additional goods that are` needed by the family which they
could not produce on their own was introduced. This method of the
exchange products for products is called trade by Bata
Because of improved farming technology and specialization by
individuals, the production of crops and animals for commercial bases
came into being. Today, people grow crops like maize, cocoa, oil palm,
wheat; and rear animals such as cattle, pigs, poultry, sheep and others
in order to make money, this called commercial Agriculture.

goods. Examples are. Cotton Lint used in the production of clothing

animals such as cattle and goats are used for making shoes and bags.

4. Provision of employment: many people are engaged in farming.
Agriculture provides employment for people who are involved in the
distribution of the various farm produce from the farm and villages to
towns and cities. Some people are employed in the processing factories
while the larger majority is involved in the direct sales of farm
produce in the public markets.

5. Provision of income to farmers: agriculture provides direct income
from the sales of crops like yam, rice and plantain
