Nigeria’s First Lady, Patience Jonathan, has declared that the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, will continue to rule Nigeria the next 60 years. Mrs. Jonathan, represented by the Minister of Women Affairs, Zainab Maina, spoke at the party’s women rally in Sokoto on Tuesday. She said that Nigerian women had got their fair share and attention under Jonathan’s administration by holding about 50 per cent of the posts. “The president has fulfilled all the promises he has made to Nigerian women in 2011 and he will do more if re- elected,’’ she said. The first lady also said that the president had 13 women in his cabinet, and had empowered women in many ways. She said that the president was also working tirelessly to curb the menace of Boko Haram insurgency. While commending women in the state for their sustained support to the PDP, She urged them collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). “Your PVCs are your power which will help you to cast your votes for the PDP candidates at all levels,’’ she said. This, she said, would ensure that women were not disenfranchised to vote. The first lady also called on mothers in the state not to allow their children to be used to cause a breach of the peace before, during and after the general elections. The first lady commenced the distribution of some “empowerment materials” to women in the state. The materials included 1,200 bags of rice, 5,000 wrappers, 5,000 bundles of guinea brocade, 800 women wears, 2,000 rubber mats, 800 children’s wears and 800 blankets. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/177864-pdp-will-rule-nigeria-for-next-60-years-patience-jonathan.html |

The United States Secretary of State, Mr. John Kerry, has expressed disappointment over the postponement of the Nigeria’s general elections. According to Kerry,“The United States is deeply disappointed by the decision to postpone Nigeria’s presidential election, which had been scheduled for February 14.” “Political interference with the Independent National Electoral Commission is unacceptable, and it is critical that the government do not use security concerns as a pretext for impeding the democratic process,” he stressed. Kerry said the international community “will be watching closely as the Nigerian government prepares for elections on the newly scheduled dates. The United States underscores the importance of ensuring that there are no further delays. “As I reaffirmed when I visited Lagos last month, we support a free, transparent, and credible electoral process in Nigeria and renew our calls on all candidates, their supporters, and Nigerian citizens to maintain calm and reject election- related violence,” Kerry added. dailypost.ng/2015/02/08/us-disappointed-shift-election-dates/ |

Lagos - Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan will not be attending this week’s African Union summit, his office has confirmed, even though discussions on terrorist group Boko Haram feature high on the agenda. Nigeria will be represented by foreign minister Aminu Wali, City Press reported on Thursday. Jonathan is currently touring Nigeria to campaign ahead of that country’s elections, which are due to take place on 14 February. Analysts say this is one of the country’s most hotly-contested elections. The big race is between Jonathan, from the People’s Democratic Party, and the newly-formed All- Progressive People’s Congress, with former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari as its presidential candidate. The heated campaign has even seen a comparison of handsomeness of the two candidates by a celebrity. The elections is one of 19 elections taking place across the African continent this year. It is not clear whether it is one of the 12 elections an AU commissioner said were of concern to the AU, but the Institute for Security Studies has ranked the elections as “high risk” due to the fact that it is highly contested, but also because of the increased Boko Haram attacks and the divide between the Muslim north and Christian south. Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula on Wednesday said that South Africa had not deployed any soldiers to help Nigeria. She threatened to arrest on return South African ex-soldiers who went there to help train Nigerian soldiers to fight back against Boko Haram, branding them “mercenaries”. Nigerians have for long complained about getting unsolicited text messages from network service providers. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), in a move to stop this has now said it would not hesitate to penalize network providers that failed to keep its regulation on unsolicited messages to subscribers. In an interview with newsmen on Wednesday, Tony Ojobo, the Director, Public Affairs, NCC, said that the commission would not support network providers to send unsolicited messages to subscribers, as it infringed on their privacy. “The issue of unsolicited messages has posed a challenge which the commission has been contending with till today. “An unsolicited text message gives a subscriber no choice to receive or not, so the commission had to intervene within the limits of its enabling laws and regulation. “We have had series of meeting with the stakeholders and telecom operators on this issue; we cannot deny the fact that we had received series of complaints from subscribers; we are quite aware of it. “We are in the process of Vast Technical Frame Work to keep track of those sending this unsolicited messages and to see that they are properly sanctioned,” Ojobo said. The NCC Public Affairs Director assured subscribers that the commission would sanction network providers appropriately once they were able to identify the source of such unsolicited messages. He added that some of the sources were untraceable for now because they were being sent through the internet. “To protect the interest of the subscribers, the NCC in the past, has been able to protect and stop unsolicited messages whose sources we were able to identify. “Those issues I believe will be resolved very soon with the series of meetings we are having with the telecom providers. Ojobo added that the commission would also penalize any erring Value Added Service provider (VAS) that failed to comply with the commission’s guideline on unsolicited Short Messaging Services (SMS)to subscribers. In a short opinion poll by information Nigeria, telecoms subscribers revealed that MTN sends unsolicited SMS the most, followed by Airtel and Etisalat. Globacom also sends, they claimed, but not as much as the other three networks. www.informationng.com/2015/01/ncc-to-sanction-network-service-providers-over-unsolicited-messages.html |
