The University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate, UCLES, now Cambridge Assessment, has provided further details on the West African School Certificate, WASC, results presented by Muhammadu Buhari, the candidate of the All Progressives Candidate in the February 14 presidential election. In a new post on its website, the university confirmed result grades for the examination in 1961 were issued in numbers, not letters, as suggested by critics of Mr. Buhari who have dismissed the results he presented as fabricated. According to Cambridge, “Examination results were classed in grades from 1 to 9”. “1, 2,3,4,5 & 6 indicate a Pass with Credit; 7 & 8 indicate a Pass; 9 indicate a Failure,” the school said. Results tendered by Mr. Buhari shows he had credits in English Language, Geography, Health Science, Hausa Language; failed in Mathematics and Woodwork, and had a pass in Literature in English. In its post, Cambridge said for candidates to qualify for its certificate in 1961, they needed to pass English, and not necessarily Mathematics. “To pass the School Certificate, candidates had to pass examinations in a variety of groups. It was compulsory to pass English Language, but not Maths, in order to gain the Certificate,” the university said. The details followed intense controversy over whether Mr. Buhari, a former Head of State and retired Army General, completed his secondary education. The Nigerian constitution requires any candidate running for the office of the President to have at least the Senior Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent. The ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the campaign office of President Goodluck Jonathan accuse Mr. Buhari of lacking the requisite qualification for the office of the president. Mr. Buhari, who ran for president in 2003, 2007 and 2011, repeatedly declared that copies of his academic records were with the military. The former head of state also said original copies of his credentials were lost when his house was raided when he was in detention during the administration of Ibrahim Babangida who toppled his regime. The Army at first said it had copies of Mr. Buhari’s results, but backtracked later, saying it had only a letter of recommendation from his principal at Katsina Provincial College, result grades without either the statement or certificate. In response, Mr. Buhari obtained copies of his WASC result from his former secondary school, now Government College, Katsina. After the publication of the Statement of Results, some Nigerians, including President Jonathan and the PDP, dismissed the results as forged. One of the allegations said Hausa language was not part of the Cambridge exams in 1961. Another said Mr. Buhari’s results that year were recorded in alphabets, not in letters as Mr. Buhari claimed. While Cambridge has declined to categorically confirm Mr. Buhari’s results, saying only the APC candidate could request or authorize such disclosure, the school posted a response to enquiries on the matter on their website authenticating some of the claims in Mr. Buhari’s result. The University confirmed that according to the Regulations for 1961, African Language papers, including those for Hausa, were set for the West African School Certificate. It also put the number of candidates who sat for the WASC Hausa examination in 1961 at 152. “Our records show that Hausa was set in the Northern Region in 1961,” Cambridge said. The university also confirmed result grades in 1961 were issued in numbers, not letters. 247nigerianewsupdate.co/breaking-cambridge-university-provides-more-details-on-buharis-wasc-results/

In an unprecedented move, the Nigerian government has announced the reduction of the fuel price of petrol from N97 per litre to N87 per litre. The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison- Madueke, said at an ongoing press conference at the presidential villa, Abuja, that the new price regime would take effect immediately. Mrs. Alison-Madueke said the N10 reduction in fuel price was necessitated by the reduction in crude oil prices in the international market. The new measure is a reversal of government’s policy on the matter. The Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had insisted on December 17 that Nigeria would not reduce the pump price of fuel despite falling oil prices at the international market, until the revenue crisis occasioned by the dwindling oil rates is over. Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said at the time that the decision to review fuel price either upwards or downwards would only be taken after the current crisis in global oil prices had been settled. But five days ago, on December 13, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, called on the government to implement immediate price reduction on fuel products to reflect the downscaling in global oil prices. Speaking through his campaign organization, the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Mr. Buhari asked the government to “stop stealing from Nigerians and allow them enjoy the relief that has come to consumers of petroleum products globally”. The APC candidate had said, “The price of diesel which has been deregulated since 2009 still sells at the pump price of N150 and N170 per litre, the same pump price when the international benchmark per barrel of crude was over $100. Now that the international benchmark has dropped to $47.5 (USD) per barrel as at Monday, we ask: where is the deregulation and the relief which it ought to bring to local consumers of diesel? “For the Nigerian consumers, unfortunately the collapse of crude oil price since October 2014 has not translated into any change in diesel, kerosene and PMS prices across the country. “We challenge the federal government to reconcile the information on the website of the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency, indicating the maximum open market price of diesel per litre in December 2014 as being at N111.6 and the fact that the price has come down to less than $50 (USD) as at Monday. “We want to posit that that the maximum indicative benchmark open consumers of diesel should pay is at a margin below N100 per litre. Therefore, Nigerians are being short-changed by about N50 to N70 on every litre of diesel sold by government. “The implication of this is that with average consumption of about 12 to 15 million litres, Nigerians are currently extorted of amounts between N600 Million to N1 Billion daily due to corruption-induced poor regulatory oversight of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources. No wonder some few industry players are smiling to the banks and buying private jets while small scale industrialists who buy diesel on daily basis for power generation and transportation find it difficult to break- even with their businesses. “Similarly on Kerosene, information available on the website of the PPPRA puts the Open Market Price at N114.71 per litre although the market price is anything above N150 per litre when the global price for a barrel of crude oil was $65 (USD). Now that international price of crude is at $47.5 (USD) per barrel, why are Nigerians still buying kerosene per litre at the same price? Why are Nigerians not benefitting from the global shortfall in the prices of crude by having a cut in the pump prices of petroleum products? “We are aware that there are examples in other African countries where governments have cut the pump prices of petroleum products to reflect the changes in the global oil market. Countries like South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya have announced cuts in pump prices of petroleum products, why can’t the Nigerian government do same? “Given the failure of government to do the right thing by announcing a cut in the pump prices of these products, we are compelled to draw the conclusion that the federal government is short- changing Nigerians ostensibly to fund the campaign of the PDP presidential candidate. “The APC Presidential Campaign challenges the federal government to make explanations on why Nigerians cannot benefit pricing reliefs on petroleum products as occasioned by the fall in the global price of crude oil. Anything should of this is a fraud and Nigerians should take note. “As for PMS (petrol) the only product the government agrees as regulated at N97 per litre, the irony is that it does not even cost much as in the United States, a country that was importing oil from Nigeria until recently. “Moreover, even the current budget is still heavy on subsidy with an allocation of N458.68 billion, a scheme that has become a conduit pipe over the years for which the children of ruling party leaders have been beneficiaries.” |

A former governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu, has again exited the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and has quietly returned Peoples Progressives Alliance, PPA, which he founded as he left office in 2007. Mr. Kalu re-joined the PPA which he dumped, earlier, in a bid to contest for the Abia North Senatorial seat, which he lost in 2011. Mr. Kalu first left the PDP to found PPA in 2006, using the platform to contest the 2007 presidential election. He later served as chairman of party’s Board of Trustee, before making a controversial return to PDP in 2013. Although he has yet to publicly announce his second exit from the PDP, the former governor is listed as a PPA senatorial candidate in the official list for February 14 election published by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Tuesday. The publication shows Mr. Kalu submitted secondary school leaving certificate, WASSCE, which is the minimum academic requirement for elections in Nigeria, as his academic qualification to INEC. On March 2, 2013, Abia State University, Aturu, had withdrawn the degree certificate earlier awarded to Mr. Kalu while he was the Visitor to the institution. The school said at the time the former governor had breached its regulations. The embarrassing episode was at the peak of a long drawn standoff between him and his successor, Theodore Orji, whom he had helped to win the state governorship election in 2007. In 2013, Mr. Kalu announced a return to the PDP after he was accused of corruption while serving a governor. The former governor could barely settle in the ruling party over his relations with Mr. Orji. Recently, he accused Mr. Orji of handpicking and imposing all PDP candidates for various elective positions in the 2015 elections. |

We Will Assemble Competent Team To Manage Nigeria – Buhari — Jan 6, 2015 | 1 Comment The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), retired Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday said his administration would assemble competent team to efficiently manage the country. Buhari said this in Port Harcourt at the inauguration of the party’s presidential campaign. He said that the team would tackle the numerous problems confronting the nation. “The fundamental issue facing this country is insecurity and the problem of the economy, which was being made worse by corruption. “I assure you that we are going to finally assemble a competent team of Nigerians to efficiently manage this country. “ The damage that has been done to this country is great. The level of unemployment, the level of insecurity is intolerable. “The damage has been done. It will take time, it will take patience, it will take support from you to make sure that we succeed when we get there.’’ Buhari commended Gov. Rotimi Amaechi for accepting to be the Director-General of the party’s presidential campaign team. Buhari urged the people to ensure that eligible voters collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) to cast their ballots on election day. The National Chairman of APC, Chief John Oyegun, urged Nigerians to vote for the party to change the fortunes of the country. ‘’If you want electricity, if you want corruption wiped out, if you want indiscipline and insecurity wiped out, then vote for Gen. Buhari and APC in the elections,’’ he said. Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, the Speaker, House of Representatives, commended Amaechi for choosing two members of the House, Dakuku Peterside and Asita Okorie Asita as governorship and deputy governorship candidates of the party in the state. “I thank Gov. Amaechi for choosing my colleagues in the House as governorship and deputy governorship candidates. This is a national assembly project in Rivers State,’’ he said. Earlier, Amaechi urged the people to collect their PVC and vote for APC candidates. He said that the time had come for the people to demonstrate their love for the party by voting for all its candidates at all levels. The Akwa Ibom State choral group has broken the world record for the largest number of Christmas carol singers in the world. The Guinness World Records has officially certified it and now has it on its website . The unity choir, a 25,272 man-choral group, broke the record at a concert in the Uyo Township Stadium on Saturday, December 13, 2014 with Guinness World Records representatives in attendance. The choir beat the record set by a group known as CENTI in Bogota, Columbia, which had 15,674 carol singers the previous year (December 15, 2013). Guinness World Records adjudicator, Liz Smith, who did the announcement in Guinness World Record Headquarters, London, United Kingdom congratulated the choir and said “It is now time to reveal the report of the official attempt to break the Guinness World Record of the largest group of carol singers. Our team of highly trained record specialists have reached a decision. The record to beat was 15,674. I can now confirm that your attempt to break the record has been successful. Congratulations on receiving a new Guinness World Records Title. The title of the largest group of carol singers has been achieved by Godswill Akpabio Unity Choir. You are officially amazing.” An elated Governor Godswill Akpabio broke the news to the people of the state saying, “This month, we broke the Guinness Book of World Records, for the largest number of carol singers ever in the world. This momentous feat was achieved when Akwa Ibom people drawn from all the nooks and crannies of the state came together in the spirit of love and brotherhood. I believe that if we imbibe the virtue of love and stand together in brotherhood in the New Year, we would keep setting records and the walls of division, which have been erected by some selfish politicians, would tumble down.” www.informationng.com/2015/01/akwa-ibom-unity-choir-enters-guinness-book-of-world-records.html
