The business of comedy is fast becoming more competitive and lucrative in Nigeria as it has been taken as full time job in the 21st century as succor is found in the business of making people laugh. Laughter is as old as humanity, while comedy can be traced to the beginning of drama. Aristotle in his ‘Poetics’ said that “Comedy has had no history because it was not at first treated seriously” and i think to this moment am writing, comedians are not taken seriously either at home or on stage but don’t try it with an hausa man anyways. lol Comedy’s origin is traced to the “keeping of fools” in times as early as the Roman times. Eminent and wealthy people, nobles in society, were known to entertain themselves and their guests with people who were defective in mind but possessed the skill to amuse though not in recent times anymore. Comedy runs through African songs, folktales, festivals, dances, and proverbs. The traditional performances are incorporated into secular expression for feudal rules, usually in the north, during occasions they enjoy the Wawan Sarki’s performances because it speaks their hidden fears and get temporary relief from their frustrations, although it is unlikely that anything changed, i know little of that because i grew up in the north Now coming down to the modern day performances of the present force of Stand-up Comedy, the art has been given a new flavour. Comedy is no longer restricted to festivals, wedding receptions and birthday ceremonies. Stand-up Comedy is featured in almost every event: Corporate Annual General Meetings, Seminars, Workshops, Symposia, Launchings, Award Ceremonies, Political campaigns etc. It is a testimony to the success they enjoy that comedians are now a permanent feature at most corporate events. Today, even Nigerian Presidents utilise comedians at their functions if you remember the 2015 general elections but it started in the era of the Former President Olusegun Obasanjo who tried to use humour to convince Nigerians to accept some of his hard-to-swallow policies. In his time, Stand-up Comedy soared to its peak and the best performers were in serious demand e.g. Alibaba but the man from “za oza” side came and reverse is the case now. No doubt that 2016 was a difficult year for all but entertainment lovers and stakeholders took their time to notice a few persons in the Abuja comedy industry that put a smile on their faces during this hard time. A random sampling conducted by brickswrites within the nation’s capital amongst entertainment lovers, event/artistes managers on the 2016 Top Five Comedians in Abuja had the following: Lukman Oni popularly known as Amb. Wahala is considered one of the stake-holder in the Abuja Entertainment industry, Amb. Wahala who found a place in the comedy sector of the industry was one of the first officials in the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Abuja chapter in the mid 2000s and became popular for mimicking the former first lady’s Dame Patience Jonathan and now headline major shows both home and abroad. Israel Chukwuyem Jude popularly Chuks D General: who was in the scene and saw the essence of education disappeared for a few years and made a full-force COME BACK after NYSC and has been holding Abuja to a standstill. He became popular shortly after taking an OAP job with one of the Abuja most listened radio WAZOBIA FM Udubisi Joseph popularly known as Short-cut within a short period of time “as his stage name suggests” has made name for himself and proved that he is one of the Abuja most spontaneous comedians. Odey Jacob popularly known as Mr. Odey is also another fastest raising most hilarious comedian Abuja has and since his emergence in the Abuja entertainment industry, tremendous growth has been recorded that he has to be chosen as one of the Top five (5) 2016 Abuja Most Hilarious Comedians. And finally is Bob Annasi who is popularly referred to as MC BOB, this uncommon comedian with his funny nature and natural intonation has gradually made his way into the hearts of entertainment lovers as well as stakeholders to make the list of Top five (5) 2016 Abuja Most Hilarious Comedians. Congratulations to all and remember the adage that says “If you not careful, your talent will take you places that your character can’t keep you” it’s believed you there, only your character can keep you! Pride goes before a fall.

Economic and financial crimes commission (EFCC), a reputable government agency that has over the years fought corruption is now involved in some of the worse unspeakable corrupt practises. The Economic financial crimes commission has since the beginning of the Mohammed Buhari Administration been accused of being a substantial tool to witch hunt the former administration’s executives and intimidate any potential political candidate for the 2019 election. They were also accused of looting recovered looted funds and breaking the laws of the federal Republic of Nigeria. A recent development has proven these accusation to be true as the EFCC an anti-corruption institution has been fingered in shoddy activities. Ibrahim Magu who formally assumed office as the acting chairman of EFCC on November 11th 2015 and was supposed to be confirmed by the senate was exposed by the Department of State Service DSS of all his illegal, corrupt practises. The most shocking amongst other allegation was the 83million rented and furnished apartment funded by the fedral capital development agency (FCDA). the rented mansion in the elitist Maitama District of the Federal capital territory (FTC) Abuja located at No. 8B, Rudolf Close, off Katsina Ala Crescent, in the highbrow Maitama District, was the abode of a former federal minister who died sometime in May 2014. An impeccable source said: “The property was rented to the Acting EFCC Chairman for N40,000,000 at N20,000,000 per annum. “Furthermore, the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) curiously awarded a contract to Africa Energy, a company owned by Rtd Air Comm. Umar Muhammad, to furnish the residence at the cost N43,000,000, in a Government where the President is known to have frowned at and rebuked his ministers for requesting N20,000,000 each to secure accommodation and furnish them. “It is shocking that the man spearheading the anti-corruption crusade of the government will be involved in such a venture. According to the monetization policy it is illegal for Federal Capital Development Authority, FCDA, to pay for Mr. Magu’s rent as it was against federal government’s monetization policy. The monetization policy was passed into law vis-a-vas passage of the certain political and judicial office holder acts 2002, it is legally stated that monetization of the salaries and allowances of all categories of Federal public servants that were formally paid in kinds be converted to cash by the salary and wage commission. The fundamental aim of the policy is to prevent and thwart government officials from using the public or tax-payers money for personal gain. The monetization policy was expressly defiled when the FCDA funded the accommodation of an executive, it is illegal for the FCDA to rent and furnish a house for even ministers let alone heads of government agencies. Even at the FCDA, there was violation of procurement process as Abuja Metropolitan Council officials grumbled over the pressure mounted on them to perfect the process. This is where the conspiracy begins that left the public with so many questions. Why will the FCDA go against the federal government monetization policy? What is the connection between the FCDA and EFCC? Under what arrangement is the FCDA involved in with using tax-payers money to rent and furnish the apartment for the acting EFCC boss? These questions has the public pondering, did the FCDA pay Magu’s rent and furniture as a bribe to malign, besmear and persecute the former Minister Sen Bala Mohammed who was unjustly arrested and detain for 45days with no charges or evidence of all accusations. Connecting the dots between when the former minister was invited and detained by the EFCC and the statement by the lawyer representing the EFCC when asked why the former minister was yet to be granted bail 27 days in detention with no charges, he said “I did inform the court that we would do our best; whatever I said before the court is subject to the decision of my senior, my superiors. I am just a small boy” that left the court asking who this superiors are that wants Sen Mohammed Bala detained after he has met all bail conditions. With these recent findings and development it is clear that the present minister of FCTA Mohammed Bello connived with the acting EFCC chairman Magu to besmear and persecute Sen Bala Mohammed. It is now a clarion call for the Buhari Administration to investigate the involvement of the FCT minister Mohammed Bello in this corrupt scandalous conspiracy and necessary actions should be taken. The way corruption is fought is more important than the fight against corruption. If corruption is fought with wicked, impure, callous and sadistic measures or procedures, we run the risk of creating tin-gods and the fight itself will be in breach of citizen’s fundamental rights as guaranteed by 1999 constitution.

Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd) and the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu have stated that the country would be more united if leaders paid adequate attention to the development of the sports sector. Gowon, while addressing those who converged for the unveiling and lighting of the Unity Torch for the Legends Wrestle for National Unity Festival, put together in remembrance of Nigeria’s past heroes at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja, stressed the importance of sports to the nation’s unity. The event that will hold in Enugu on December 9 and 10 will welcome over 20 wrestlers from across the world featuring in different contests. Gowon, whose tenure as the country’s head of state started the National Sports Festival, called on every Nigerian to support the Legends Wrestle For National Unity Festival, adding that it would help cement the country’s unity. Also speaking, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, pointed out that there was the need to develop school sports in the country. According to him, “We believe that if we are able to develop sports, we would be able to create jobs to ensure that some people who do not have formal education and those who do not have the opportunity of achieving much in education can also gain prominence just as their counterparts in Europe, America and the rest if the world. “You do not need a university degree to be a good sports person… what you need is a good skill and a conducive environment.” Ekweremadu disclosed that Enugu was chosen as host city for the event because, “Enugu is unique in many respects: As the center of the South East of Nigeria, Enugu is known for peace and also for tourism because of most of all home movies are produced in Enugu. We believe that Enugu can also pioneer the issue of unity in Nigeria. “Today, we are talking about arms struggle all over the place and we need to change the narrative; in doing that, we need to use sports, which we believe is one thing that is common to every Nigerian. We believe that if we bring people to Enugu through sports, it would be a way for us to network at a different level instead of a conflict level.” Source http://supremetv.info/gowon-ekweremadu-advocate-development-of-sports-to-enhance-nigerias-unity/

Pageantry in Nigeria today has become an all-comers affair, it is what every young naive and innocent lady delves into, consequently, it has been bastardized by some unscrupulous pageant organizers. I went into pageantry because I was passionate about it. Infact, i started having keen interest in it since 1994 and I have gotten so much knowledge about it, so to a large extent I can say I know the do's and don'ts of pageantry. A large number of pageants in Nigeria are based on the 3 Fs, It is fixed, fake and fraudulent. It is an open mystery today that the Pageant business in Nigeria has been perverted by a few coordinators and some Beauty Queens. However, we must say that there are some upright coordinators and few ethical Queens who are day to day striving to have beneficial outcomes in the general public. I have effectively closed my rule, since I effectively and successfully completed my pet projects over the length and expansiveness of Nigeria during my reign, I am delighted that I possessed the capacity to fulfill my childhood dream becoming a Beauty Queen and more so a Beauty Queen with a remarkable difference and distinction in all I did. Presently I am joyfully hitched in that I'm happily married to the man of my dreams and I'm proceeding onward with my existence with a firm resolve to accomplish more outstanding things positively making impact in the society. The Association of Beauty Pageant and Fashion Exhibition Organisers of Nigeria (ABPFEON) is a body that was set up to checkmate, oversee and control all the activities of the beauty industry but over the years, the group of people who came together as one to form this association has delved into the pageant business as well forgetting the purpose why the association was formed. All their officials from top to the bottom now has their own pageants, nobody interferes in the other man's business as they all have one common interest of making money. I am cocksure the association doesn't have the total number of duly registered pageants in Nigeria as they must have lost count because it has become an all comers affair and there are no regulations. The issue of selling tickets by contestants is a serious issue that needs urgent attention, the 'so called' organizers should not be allowed to host a pageant if he/she does not have the funds or resources to do so and they should stop relying on the contestants to sell tickets for them to enable them host the show and pay their bills. These girls are being put in tight corners if they must win. After giving them tickets worth millions of naira to sell they are asked to pay whatever moneys they raised into the company's account and when they can't sell any, they are not entitled to be crowned. Why not allow the contestants to have equal grounds and contest keenly for the crown? Stop selling your crowns to the highest bidders, they should crown girls that have brains, girls that can represent the brand anytime, anyday even when you are not there. Some pageant organisers are very good at PR, they can trick a monkey from a tree with their write-ups. They can tell you white is black and black is white and you will believe. They will say the crown is worth $3000 and the sash is imported from UK, whereas they can't give their winner her prizes after she is crowned...... Imagine an organiser will post an advert for his/her pageant, saying they are giving out a brand new car and 2m cash prize to the winner when he/she(The organizer) doesn't have an ordinary bicycle wheel. They will promise a 1 year wardrobe allowance, monthly salary bla bla bla....and at the end of the day the winner goes home empty handed and has nothing to show that she won a pageant except a plastic crown and a 1 yard satin sash....Who is fooling who? The truth be told, pageant organisers are frauds....why make promises you can't fulfil? Stop organising make-believe shows and relying on people's pocket. It is no longer news that pageant organisers use their queens for business (Prostitution) they crown a queen who is willing and ready to do their biddings, hereby enriching their pockets and bank accounts. From the day you purchase your registration form there is a different kind of communication between you and the organizers where they begin to pick your brain to get to know if you will favor them in their business and thus what you have to bring to the table in terms of cash, sponsorship and car gift. * In recent times, there has been a new trend in pageantry that baffles me. How can a pageant have more than 10 crowns? What happened to the way it was years ago where you have 1 winner, 1st runner up, 2nd runner up and 3rd runner up......Now, you have different titles from one pageant like Miss Nigeria Football World, MNF Universe, MNF Ambassador, MNF Tourism, MNF Top Model, MNF Queen, MNF Africa, MNF International, MNF Niger Delta, MNF South West, MNF North Central, MNF North East, MNF North West, MNF South South, MNF South East etc....all of this titles are uncalled for, none of these winners have anything to contribute to the betterment of the society. It is so confusing, you paraded 18 girls on stage and 16 of them are crowned winners, why this is so, leaves me bewildered. The names of some pageants these days will make one weep and I think it is another area that needs attention also. There is more to been a Beauty Queen than just the parade of beauty and gorgeous outfits, the primary purpose of a queen is to make positive impact in the society with whatever pet project you choose to embark on and not just to become a fashion icon and red carpet gazelle. You shouldn't be called a queen if you do not understand the weight and responsibilities that comes with the crown. Ask yourselves, now that you have won, what next? Do not be among those who call themselves beauty queens but are fashion queens with nothing upstairs other than to release new photos every month, throw all white birthday parties, post selfie pictures of themselves inside hotel bathrooms and rooms, queen who rather opt to upgrade their wardrobes instead of upgrading their brains. Before you purchase the form to participate, know exactly what you plan to do if eventually you win? Some girls already have ulterior motives before they buy forms, some don't attend auditions, they just pay cash to appear in camp. I can bet that 80% of queens in Nigeria did not keenly contest to win a crown, they simply paid the organiser for it. And this is why they have nothing to offer afterwards. Nigerian pageant is not a competition....it is a show where you pay, sell tickets and win...it is not usually keenly contested for. Until we begin to do things the right way, our Nigeria representatives can never do well on international stages and we will continue to lose to other smaller African countries in International pageants. Every year over 700 girls emerge winners of different pageants in Nigeria (Local govt, State, Regional, National) and I can say only 10 queens out of 700 are busy working hard on a daily basis to make positive impact in the society why the rest are enjoying their crowns while it lasts. I use this medium to congratulate Mrs Ebele Eze-Enemchukwu who is the current Mrs United Nations Tourism. She is one queen who has really made great impact in the society like i did during my reign and I encourage aspiring queens to emulate people like her. Be very sure who you call a role model. Charity works hand in hand with pageantry, if you find it difficult to give helping hands to the less privileged in the society, please pull off your plastic crown and hide it under your pillow. You don't have to contest in 10 different pageant before you can do the needful, a local govt queen can do what a national queen will do, it all depends on you, what you have upstairs and how you can make things happen, winning 10 different unrecognized crowns in one year doesn't make you outstanding rather your contribution to humanity with just one crown can make alot of difference. I am using this medium to call on the Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Zainab Maina, to declare a state of emergency in the pageantry Industry in Nigeria and subsequently wipe out the bad eggs in the industry both organisers and so called beauty queens.....This has been my stand over time viz -a- viz the ugly and unpleasant activities that has been going on behind closed doors, all in the name of pageantry...I'm not advocating for a total overhaul of the system because I'm an ex - Beauty Queen but because of the gullible and naive young ladies that are daily being exploited by these pageant organisers. I will enjoin all other Beauty Queens to always come out to speak whenever they are being exploited in like manners.... THE DAY YOU COMPROMISE YOUR INTEGRITY TO ANY PAGEANT ORGANISER, THAT IS THE DAY YOU LOOSE YOUR VOICE FOREVER.....BE WISE......#SayNoToFixedFakeAndFraudulentPageants#
