Dede m,

Thanks for the explanations.
Where can I read more about Rivers State history/ government gazzettes? Is there a state library in Port Harcourt?

ChinenyeN:

You mean this Ezaa? The people that own the site spelled it as Ezaa, so I'm not sure if it's the same Izaa you're talking about or not. I'm guessing it's a typo.

Izaa is the correct Igbo spelling going by how it's pronounced. It's the Igbo vowel I(with dot under)

I haven't yet come across a dialect that I could not at all understand. Maybe I haven't been exposed enough.

Really? Try and listen to someone from Ebonyi state - Izaa/ Abakiliki speak. I bet you won't understand jack

@sugabelly
First of all, be rest assured I'm not out here to castigate you. I actually appreciate your courage at starting the lessons for her but what I'm stressing is doing it the right way.

sugabelly:

I do NOT like dialects that say Mmiri. This does not mean I do not like the people that speak those dialects, it means I do not like the way the words sound in those dialects, including words like Mmiri, Ihu, etc.

I'm not looking down on anybody. Everyone has personal preference, the same way you all obviously seem to prefer Central Igbo.

Reference to your post in bold above.
In effect what you're saying is that you don't like Igbo Izugbe.
Take a look at the table below:

English words   Igbo izugbe usage   Anambra/Enugu dialect   Imo/Abia dialect
land/ground            ala                     ana                                       ala
up/sky/high           elu                        enu                                       elu
day                   ubochi                    Mbosi/ubosi                         ubochi
night                   abali                        abani                                     abali
now                   ugbua                       kita                                     ugbua
one                   otu                           ofu                                     otu
food                   nri                            nni                                     nri
bed                   nani                        soso                                     nani
long/tall             ogologo                   ogonogo                                   ogologo
Leg/foot             ukwu                      okpa                                    ukwu

You can see that the Igbo Izugbe aligns more to the Imo Igbo.
Igbo Izugbe is actually encouraged to be taught to fresh learners of Igbo.

I had the opportunity of learn in secondary school (US equivalent of high school) and this Igbo Izugbe is what was taught in school.

The need for this is because of the mutual unintelligibility of the many dialects.

@drrionelli
I'm not disputing the fact that sugabelly's lessons gives learners a start but what we are stressing is doing it right at first.

drrionelli:

Dialectical differentiation is important within a language.  It affords the language flexibility to grow and change as the need arises.  And a language must grow and change to reflect the needs of the people who use it to properly communicate with others who speak it.
I totally agree with you on this. It will suprise you to know that this Igbo Izugbe actually borrows a lot of words from the different dialects of Igbo.

egheleghe:

those 'r' added were previously omitted and corrected after the war.
This does not ring true. My wonder is why they put the "R"s.

egheleghe:

in most maps one sees okigwe spelt okigwi or igbo spelt ibo.infact igbo started being used in place of ibo after the war.
"Ibo" is used by Europeans who could not pronounce the Igbo consonant "gb" which they substituted with "b". Try asking an Englishman to pronounce "Igbo".

Locking up threads and starting new ones, to me, is not the best way to approach the problem of web resources.

@Dede

Is it true that adding "R" to names of quaters in PHC started after the war?

UmuIgbo changed to RUmuIgbo
UmuOkwuta changed to RUmuOkwuta
UmuOla changed to RUmuola
etc

BTW UmuOkwuta translates to: Children of Stone

Culture / Re: Igbo Language And Nigerian Pidgin by echelon(m): 8:33am On Jan 31, 2009
The Igbo Language is made up of many dialects some of which are mutually unintelligible.

It's because of this that "Igbo Izugbe" (Central Igbo) was drafted by the Onwu Orthographic Committee in 1981.

It's always recommended that new comers to the language be taught this "Igbo Izugbe" so that they may be able to understand other dialects as the need arises.

I perceive you're Igbo is Anambra, same as mine, but when I teach, I use Igbo Izugbe hence mmiri instead of mmili
