I used to back it up. But my laptop was stolen and I've not restarted. Maybe we can start afresh. It's tedious job though.

Youngies,

Do you have a back-up of all the proverbs in this thread? The thread may be under threat.

Nairaland / General / Question For Seun Osewa by echelon(m): 6:33am On Jan 29, 2009
Please could you give us reasons why you locked the Igbo thread?

This question has become necessary since you did not deem it fit to inform the frequent users of that thread before your action.

Counting on your "gentlemanness" to provide a reasonable answer.

@youngies/ others

If you can lay hands on Onwu Committees Report of 1981 on "Igbo Izugbe", I think we'll all get cleared.

Now youngies to what you posted, I think Igbo Izugbe's skeleton is more like Imo State Igbo than any other Igbo state.

Note the word "skeleton". That means many other words are borrowed from other dialects to make up for lack of some words.

I'm searching for that report of 1981 to be cleared.

Autos / Re: Okada Ban In Portharcourt by echelon(m): 2:34pm On Jan 24, 2009
Keke Napep is NOT the solution to the problems. Solution = Roads. Hasten ongoing works and build more roads. Keke Napep will still increase the traffic congestion.

Issues will come to a head when the rains fully arrive.

tonye-t:

also, life in PH is a two way thing, FROM HOUSE >>> WORK, WORK>>>>>>HOUSE, no branching again, all spots and bars are really suffering it
Hehehehe!!!

Na true you talk.

Advantages of the ban:
1. Most people now wake up on time to go to work to beat time. Imagine slaughter bridge getting blocked by 6:30am in the morning!
2. A lot of people now trek to work. This will lead to improved physical fitness for most  cheesy. See some people panting!
3. No bike to a great extent reduced motor vehicle accidents. Some of these bikers don't even train to ride before jumping on a motorcycle. I once boarded a bike and driving was unstable, swaying from side to side. The following conversation ensued between I and the okadaman.

I: My friend, e be like say you neva sabi how to drive okada?
Okadaman: Oga, e neva sabi me well well!

I immediately got down and gave the man N20 for the few meters he carried me

4. It brought an end to robbery by bikes.

5. It has made it possible for people to plan their movement before embarking. Unlike before they just jump on a bike and off they went!

It's numerous.

Disadvantages:
1. Increase in motor traffic on the road. Lots of old cars finding their way into the streets - more people buying new cars
2. The ban was not well planned. People are really suffering it.

Tough question bro.

Maybe because it's intelligible to all Igbos. Please note that some words are still borrowed from other dialects for the Igbo Izugbe though.

Culture / Re: A Man Cannot Claim A Child If He Did Not Marry The Mother (igbos Only) by echelon(m): 7:14am On Jan 21, 2009
I presume that the custom seeks to discourage irresponsiblity among the young men. That notwithstanding, the child will eventually know it's true father.

Culture / Re: Igbos come show your proverbs skills by echelon(m): 7:57pm On Jan 20, 2009
Yeah, makes sense now.

ChinenyeN:

"nri eji emetu mmanu n'aka na-eri".
A better rendering in Central Igbo is: Nri a ga-emetu mmanu n'aka wee na-eri. "eji emetu" above translates to "used to touch" which is misleading.

Thanks for the clarification.

ChinenyeN:

Today I heard my father describe someone as "iri l'eji eme mmanu l'aka di-eri" (or "nri eji eme mmanu n'aka na-eri" for a more standardized Igbo).

I understand each word but the not the sentence as a whole. Maybe a translation of the standardized Igbo version you gave (in bold above) into English would help.

I'm not quite sure you wrote out what he said correctly. I can't make a clear meaning out of it. Maybe it's the tone?

Learning languages at adulthood requires commitment and patience. Uwandiigbo is a yahoo groups dedicated to Igbo studies. You can ask questions and get replies. They also have self-paced studies. Good luck.
