PoliticsTinubu, Aides Run Tests For COVID-19 After Cso’s Death by Ecstasy154(op): 4:35pm On Apr 25, 2020
As a precaution, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and his personal aides were on Saturday tested for the coronavirus following the death of his chief security officer (CSO), TheCable understands.

Lateef Raheem, 51, died in the early hours of Friday after falling ill on Monday, but he had a history of high blood pressure and diabetes.

TheCable understands that before his burial on Friday, samples were taken from his body for laboratory tests to determine if he was infected with COVID-19.

On Saturday, samples were also taken from Tinubu and his personal aides. Results are expected on Monday, sources told TheCable.

In a tribute, Tinubu praised the late police officer who had been with him before he became governor of Lagos state in 1999.

“Lateef reported for work on Monday. Feeling a bit under the weather, he went home to rest. We spoke on Wednesday by phone. He was in fine spirits and was looking forward to resuming work,” he wrote.

“I felt nothing but profound shock, and then the emptiness of deep loss when I was awakened early Friday that my most trusted security aide had died and that I would never see him again. I did not know the Wednesday conversation would be our last. The pain of his loss is acute.”

When Raheem was seconded to Tinubu ahead of the 1999 governorship election, he was a corporal and had only a secondary school certificate.

“Because of his thirst for knowledge and personal improvement, he subsequently acquired a university degree. He did not stop there. He kept growing. When he passed, Lateef had risen to the level of Assistant Superintendent of Police,” he wrote.

TravelCOVID-19: Niger Turns Back Trailer Load Of Lagos Returnees by Ecstasy154(op): 5:13pm On Apr 15, 2020
A trailer filled with over 50 persons has been turned back by Niger’s Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ahmed Matane.

The truck had been stopped by security personnel at Gidan Kwano area when they saw people on top of the truck unable to explain their journey.

The driver had explained they were coming from Lagos and heading to Kano, pleading they should be allowed to pass through as they pledged not to stop in the state.

But the security had to call the Chairman of the state Task Force on COVID-19 to seek permission to allow them to pass through the state.

Matane, who is the Chairman of the state Taskforce on COVID-19 when he arrived at the scene, immediately told the security personnel to escort the trailer back to where it came from.

He stressed that there was no waiver for any truck not carrying food items, fuel or other essential products to enter the state, emphasising the total lockdown of Niger.

An eyewitness told The Nation that the truck had been covered with tampoli, adding that while some of the boys were on top of the truck, others were under the covering.

The SSG had emphasised the state was determined not to allow anyone to cross the border while expressing his doubly over the health of the passengers in the truck.

The 24- hour restriction order in Niger state entered its third day on Wednesday.

PoliticsCOVID-19: Bala Mohammed Recovers, Tests Negative by Ecstasy154(op): 9:42pm On Apr 09, 2020
The Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, has tested negative for coronavirus (COVID-19).

He confirmed his health status in tweets posted via his verified Twitter handle on Thursday.

Governor Mohammed announced his recovery from the disease about two weeks after he tested positive for COVID-19.

He thanked the people of the state, as well as religious leaders in Bauchi and elsewhere for their support and prayers while he was in isolation.

The governor also thanked the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the team of health experts in Bauchi tackling coronavirus.

On March 23, the state government said the governor had gone into self-isolation after he had contact with the son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who had tested positive for COVID-19.

According to his media aide, Mukhtar Gidado, Governor Mohammed met with Atiku’s son – on his way to Bauchi from Lagos – on the plane where both men shook hands and exchanged pleasantries.

Although he did not show any symptoms of the disease as of the time, the governor’s blood samples were taken and sent to the NCDC for a test.

The result of the test was positive while that of others who took the test with him, including his family and aides, came out negative.

The Senate on Monday said that Senators have agreed to contribute 50 per cent of their salaries to support the efforts being made to contain the spread and treatment of Coronavirus (COVID-19) victims in Nigeria.

The acting spokesman of the Senate, Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who disclosed this in a statement in Abuja, said the monthly donation would be “sustained” until the COVID-19 pandemic is wiped out of the country.

Akwashiki said: “After due consultations following a keen review of the national efforts to contain the Coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria, the Senate wishes to announce that from March, 2020, Distinguished Senators will be donating 50 per cent of their salaries to these efforts to stop the spread of the disease, otherwise known as COVID-19, in our country.

PoliticsCoronavirus: FG Tracing 4,370 People by Ecstasy154(op): 5:36pm On Mar 26, 2020
The federal government says it is tracing no fewer than 4,370 people that have contacts with index cases of the novel Coronavirus epidemic (COVID-19).

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, made this known on Thursday in Abuja, while giving an update on the measures being taken by the government to tackle the pandemic.

“We have 4,370 people of interest whom we are tracing, and we urge those who have had contact with suspected cases to immediately report to the authorities.

“We urge Nigerians to support the authorities in this regard, because we are on the verge of reaching the level of community spread.

“We must stop this immediately or we will record exponential cases in the days ahead,” he said.

The minister noted that being positive to Coronavirus is not a death sentence, and there is no justification for people not to surrender themselves for test.

He said some Nigerians, who flew into the country from overseas, filled wrong addresses and phone numbers in their forms, making it difficult to trace them when the need arose.

“We are not getting the kind of cooperation that this moment deserves from Nigerians.

“Many are busy engaging in meaningless criticisms instead of complying with the stipulated directives to keep people safe.

“Some Nigerians defied orders to stay away from large gatherings, while some religious leaders wilfully flouted the directives to ensure social distancing.

“The government is doing its best, but we need the citizens to do their best too,” he said.

The minister said it has got to the stage when government would have to use “strong enforcement” for people to comply with directives aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19.

HealthCOVID-19: Oyo NUJ Fumes Over Makinde’s Poorly Equipped Emergency Centre by Ecstasy154(op): 5:25pm On Mar 23, 2020
AS the number of confirmed Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Nigeria rose to 35 with one death recorded early Monday morning, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has made known its displeasure over the poorly equipped COVID-19 Centers created by the state government to handle emergencies in the state.

This was contained in a statement signed by union’s Secretary, Sola Oladapo and made available to newsmen on Monday in Ibadan.

The union also tasked the government to enforce full implementation of stay-at-home order in schools as students were still seen going to schools on Monday.

The union further told Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State to ensure that public motor parks are quarantined while park managers must ensure that sanitisers are administered to those boarding their vehicles.

The NUJ Chairman, Comrade Demola Babalola had on Sunday, set-up 11-man Committee, headed by Mrs Oyebukola Oriowo to ensure accurate reporting of COVID-19 preparedness and to, through reporting, draw the attention of the Taskforce to areas inadvertently neglected.

While acknowledging the activation of COVID-19 centres, an on-the-spot visitation by some members of the team showed the unpleasant state of preparedness, adding that some journalists who visited the government designated centre for infectious disease control which would double as Emergency Operation Centre in Olodo area of the city, reported that there was no indication of adequate preparedness on the part of the government.

Similarly, a team who visited the Olodo centre was disturbed that the announced centre was still a ghostland with bushes and access blocked.

“We learnt a team led by Dr Bashir Bello, the state Commissioner for Health, visited the facility but didn’t have access as they had no keys. Another member of our team contacted UCH and found out that they were yet to get any funding assistance from the state government for this pandemic.”

“All they have on ground now at UCH is a 4-bedded isolation centre with an empty chlorine tank, non-functional monitoring device, no water etc, yet the governor said he has directed funds to be made available but evidence on the ground suggests otherwise. The governor must be on top of this as people are fearful when they know everyone is susceptible. “At 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Odogbo in Ibadan is another isolation centre.”

No test kit except Lagos. Medical consumables are inadequate. staff strength, not a cheerful issue.”

“The union, however, wondered if the state government was really ready for the task of fighting COVID-19 global pandemic going by its slow response and poor sensitisation of the public and enforcement of its order.

“Oyo is one of the biggest states in the country with many porous entries and exits according to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). At this time of COVID-19 global pandemic, are we really monitoring these entries? ” Have we extended some of these facilities and designated centres to the various zones of the state to facilitate an immediate response to suspected cases? The state government must be proactive to save lives. We gathered that the Oluyole woman suspected to be infected with the virus had on Sunday driven herself to a private hospital after three days of “no” personal contact from government team.”

“The Oluyole woman whom the governor spoke about three days ago as a suspected case, has not been visited until this afternoon (Sunday) by any government official. The woman had risen to the occasion and drove herself to a private hospital in Ibadan,” it said.

“On Monday, students of some private schools still attended school in defiance to the government order. The government needs to be firm in enforcing the order. We also feel for the safety of all, Oyo State should declare two days break for workers to stay at home. This is not the time to be complacent. States in Western Nigeria are doing this and the pacesetter state cannot lag behind in protecting over 6million people. We also feel the government should come out about worship in religious centres and enforce compliance. The purpose of staying at home is defeated if we order people to stay at home but they converge as the multitude in religious centres. Only the living will worship God.”

“We also have information that some expatriates sneaked-in into some private companies in Ibadan such as SUMMARY. The company also has a huge number of casual workers. How are they ensuring adherence to safeguarding measures? Government should be proactive and partner with media organisations to sensitise the public. The government should advise postponement of family functions that will bring more than fifty people together.”

“Government actors should not be seen involved in activities such as social events, or functions which can threaten collective resolve to fight the pandemic.”

“Health personnel must be adequately protected and insured to be able to give in their best. We need to walk the talk. A stitch in time saves nine.” NUJ stressed.

PoliticsSouthwest NURTW To Makinde: Revert Proscription by Ecstasy154(op): 12:30pm On Feb 19, 2020
• Threatens strike after seven-day ultimatum

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Southwest on Tuesday urged Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to revert the proscription decision on the union’s activities in the state.

It issued a seven-day ultimatum to the government to also revert the appointment of ex-chairman of a faction of the union in the state, Alhaji Mukaila Lamidi, popularly known as Auxiliary, as the chairman, Disciplinary Committee for the motor parks.

The union threatened that NURTW will begin strike if the decision is not rescinded by the government

At a briefing at the zonal secretariat complex in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, the union accused the governor of “deliberate attempt to take away our means of livelihood.”

Those at the briefing included Southwest Zonal Chairman Mr. Olamilekan Folorunso, Deputy Chairman Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya aka MC Oluomo, National Deputy General-Secretary and Chairman, Caretaker Committee Oyo State chapter, Comrade Kayode Agbeyangi and a Zonal Trustee, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle aka Sego.

The speech was read by Agbeyangi.

According to them, NURTW is a trade union recognised by the constitution and extant provision of labour laws.

They described the interference as undue and a violation of members’ freedom of operating as a union.

The union urged the government to stop interfering in the affairs of the union and allow the NURTW to carry out its legitimate duties.

Agbeyangi condemned Governor Seyi Makinde’s imposition of park managers to run the operations of the union at parks.

He also accused the governor of acting the script of some individuals to truncate the activities of the union and arrest its leaders.

Agbeyangi alleged: “It has come to the notice of our union that the governor in cahoots with an expelled member, “Auxiliary”, has been planning and making a clandestine move to arrest our leaders for state-sponsored killings of individuals, thereby taking them out of circulation.

“We are hereby using this medium to ask the government to stop undue and unwarranted interference in the affairs of the union. It should allow the NURTW to carry out its legitimate duties without let or hindrance.”

He stressed that the government should allow the activities of the union.

“The governor should kindly allow the activities of the union in the state and rescind the introduction of the park management scheme within one week, to save thousands of our members and their families from hardship,” Agbeyangi said.

PoliticsAmnesty International Working For Terror Groups- DHQ by Ecstasy154(op): 4:07pm On Feb 14, 2020
The Defence Headquarters has accused Amnesty International (AI) of deliberately supporting the acts of terrorism perpetrated against Nigeria by the Boko Haram and the Islamic State of West African State (ISWAP) terror groups.

Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement, cautioned the group to put an end to its reckless distortion of facts in its bid to satisfy “its puppeteers by undermining Nigeria’s Military campaign against terrorism in the North East”.

According to the statement: “The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has taken cognizance of yet another falsified report by Amnesty International (AI) in a campaign of calumny targeting the Nigerian Military and deliberately supporting the callous acts of terrorism perpetuated by Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) and Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP).

“This inglorious campaign is contained in a recent report alleging employment of unlawful tactics of razing down villages and unlawful detention of locals by troops. This is line with the AIs usual mannerism and tenacious efforts aimed at disparaging the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).

“The Defence Headquarters wishes to state unambiguously that the allegations being touted by AI are nothing but a betrayal of its lack of in-depth knowledge of the goings-on in the North East (NE) theatre of operation”.

It continued: “It is expedient to state that troops of Operation Lafiya Dole who are conducting Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgency Operations in the NE do not employ arson as an operational tactic. It is a well-known fact, going by the modus operandi of BHTs, that they have more often than not engaged in the atrocious acts of looting and burning of villages, as well as destroying infrastructures.

“It therefore, beats ones imagination that AI is attributing these atrocities to AFN troops who are legitimately defending the country guided by extant rules of engagement and operational codes of conduct.

“AI must understand the fact that Nigeria is at war against terrorism in the NE and that the troops have a constitutional mandate to protect lives and property, even if it means conducting an evacuation to save and secure lives of civilians in the conflict. Protecting civilians by evacuating them from the line of fire during combat is not a violation of the international law of conflict or a war crime.

“It is rather a commendable effort by the troops to prevent collateral damage during combat. Our troops should therefore be commended for making deliberate efforts to evacuate civilians in order to protect their lives and property.

“It is also crucial to point out, that troops deployed to fight terrorism in the NE do not attack or raze down villages, communities or settlements, rather they launch offensive on terrorists’ camps, enclaves and hide outs.

“Based on actionable intelligence, persons who provide logistics and other forms of support to the terrorists are arrested and subjected to thorough investigation by a combined team of professionals drawn from the intelligence community of the Armed Forces and other security agencies. Anyone not found culpable is not held in custody for further investigations.

“AI must therefore put an end to its reckless distortion of facts in its desperate bid to satisfy its puppeteers by undermining Nigeria’s Military campaign against terrorism in the NE.

“We urge members of the public to please discountenance AIs report, as it is not a true and realistic reflection of troops’ counter terrorism operation in the NE”

PoliticsFalana To Seyi Makinde: Pay Off Elected Chairmen Or Let Them Serve Their Tenure by Ecstasy154(op): 10:40pm On Feb 03, 2020
Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana waded into the local government crisis in Oyo State, on Monday, urging Governor Seyi Makinde to either allow the sacked elected Chairmen to serve out their tenure or pay them off if they won’t be allowed to complete their tenure.

Falana who held that caretaker chairmen were unknown to the nation’s constitution, charged Makinde to rather speed up the process of conducting a local government election in the state.

These were some of Falana’s remarks during the maiden edition of Emeritus Professor Muyiwa Awe Annual Memorial Lecture, held at the University of Ibadan, on Monday.

Responding to journalists on way out of the local government crisis in Oyo State, Falana said: “The governor will have to speed up election of Local Government officials because the caretaker committees are unknown to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

“Once the Local Government chairmen have been elected, they have to serve their tenure and if at all you are not allowing them to finish their tenure, you will have to pay them. This is the position of the law.”

Meanwhile, Attorney General of Oyo State, Professor Oyelowo Oyewo, on Monday, said the return to office of the sacked Chairmen of local government and local council development areas in the state will be guaranteed by a court order to that effect.

This is as Oyelowo, who spoke on a Channels Television programme, noted that there was no particular court case instituted against the appointment of caretaker chairmen by the Governor Seyi Makinde led government.

Describing the local government crisis in the state as a combination of politics and legality, Oyewo, however, said it looked forward to the court rulings on its injunction filed against the Attorney General of the Federation and five others and its appeal against a court judgment obtained by the sacked Chairmen against Oyo State governor.

He said the state government will abide by a court judgment that declares its appointment of caretaker Chairmen as null and void and calls for a return to the status quo.

Oyewo, however, said the state government was keen to conduct local government elections as soon as the ongoing court cases are dispensed with.

“The bottom line is that the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde is a rule of law administration. If a judgment comes out of the court directing that our action is null and void, go back to the status quo, that will be done.

“Even with the action to appoint caretaker chairmen taken by the government, there is no instituted action against the action of the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, till I speak.

“What everybody wants is for the state to be able to resolve this matter, both in terms of the legality and political process. Within a short time from now, we hope to be able to conduct elections and have the administration of local governments properly running as it is required,” Oyewo said.

Speaking further, Oyewo said the Supreme court judgment being alluded to by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, in a letter to the state government, was not precisely to be enforced upon Oyo State.

Mentioning that there were some other states running local government using caretaker committees, he accused Malami of being partisan by writing the Inspector General of Police to enforce the judgment in Oyo State.

He described Malami’s involvement as subjudice, noting that the state government was in court to challenge the judgment obtained by the sacked Chairmen against the Oyo State governor.

“The Attorney General may have his reasons to have written that letter addressed to the Oyo state Attorney General but they are not based on the constitution and not based on law. They are so partisan.

“You don’t write a letter to the Chairman of a party in a state directing the governor. We run a federal government and this has been settled by the Supreme Court and sorted during the regime of President Olusegun Obasanjo when there was a dispute of creation of local government and the government withheld.

“The Supreme Court said if you have such issues, you go to court and that is what we have done. We have gone to court.

“The state government went to court because, with respect to the local government, we believe that the AGF was not properly briefed.

“If he were aware that the matter was subjudice, then he will not take such wanton, liberal use of his powers. His powers are guided by law, the constitution of the land, and as interpreted by the courts,” Oyewo said.

PoliticsBailout Funds: Indebted States Remit N29bn Into Fg’s Coffers by Ecstasy154(op): 8:09pm On Jan 26, 2020
Abuja – Federal Government has continued in its bid to recover all funds loaned to states, as budget support facility.

So far, it has netted in N29billion already from the N614 billion given to states when the country plunged into recession a few years ago.

With the latest remittances, the states are now indebted to the federal government to the tune of N585billion.

Recall that except for Lagos state, 35 states of the federation accessed loans from the federal government coffers to meet wage demands between 2015 and 2016.

The Minister of Finance Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed had last year stated that the government was bent on recovering all the bailout funds given to them on an installment basis, but some states are believed not to be favourably disposed to the amount being deducted, with some describing it as excessive.

Their grievances were echoed when they emerged from their regular Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) monthly meeting in Abuja last week.

Clement Agba, Minister of State for Finance, Budget and National Planning had after the National Economic Council meeting chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, told State House correspondents of the development, saying out of the N614 billion we have so far recovered N29billion.

But the indebted governors are insisting that there should be a review of the repayment plans, even though the high deductions have not stopped the benefiting states from honoring their obligations to repay.

The state government’s action is in response to an earlier letter from the Sarakis seeking for an amicable out-court-settlement of the case.

Agents of the state government had on January 2nd demolished some property (Ile Arugbo) at the Ilofa Road, GRA Ilorin of the late strongman of Kwara politics.

The state government claimed that the parcel of land was illegally acquired by the Sarakis under the name Asa Investment Limited.

This has led to litigation between former Senate President Bukola Saraki and the state government.

At the last adjourned date, state High Court in Ilorin had urged parties to the dispute to explore out-of-court resolution of the case.

At the resumed hearing of the case on Friday, Counsel to Asa Investment Limited (Sarakis) AbdulAzeez Ibrahim informed the court that his clients had received a letter from the state Ministry of Justice inviting them to a meeting slated for January 27th, 2020.

Said Ibrahim: “On January 15th, your lordship conscientiously advised parties to explore settlement of the case out of court in the interest of peace in this state of harmony.

“Consequent upon that we as counsel to the claimant had to persuade our client and after thorough discussions our client instructed us to write a letter to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of the state of our readiness to meet with him. And we served the 20th January, 2020.

“Consequently, this morning in this court, we were served with a letter dated January 23rd, 2020 from the Kwara state Ministry of Justice. In the letter we are invited for a meeting slated for 27th January, 2020.

“We want to explore the opportunity this court has afforded. We therefore, submit that an adjournment is imminent and
inevitable.”

Counsel to the state government, who is also the Director Civil Litigation, Ministry of Justice A.M Bello confirmed the receipt of a letter from the claimant’s counsel seeking for amicable resolution of the case out of court.

“In tandem with the tenet of the said letter, we have invited the claimant for a meeting on Monday next week for out-of-court settlement of the case.” Mr. Bello added.

He aligned with the claimant’s counsel application for adjournment. Counsel to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Aderemi Ajibola said “we shall not be opposing to the adjournment sought by the claimant’s counsel.”

In his ruling, presiding Judge Abiodun Adebara said urged the parties to resolve the case amicably before the next adjourned date.

Said he: “This court is particularly impressed by the parties for the steps taken to settle out of court; they are therefore enjoined to engage in meaningful discussions that will lead to the resolution of the case out of court. I will the parties well in their deliberation.

“With the concurrence of the learned counsel, this case is adjourned to March 2nd for the report of out-of-court settlement.”

PoliticsBuhari Administration Spent N1.7 Trillion On Nigeria’s ‘broken’ Electricity Sect by Ecstasy154(op): 9:30pm On Jan 23, 2020
The federal government has in the past three years spent N1.7 trillion on Nigeria’s electricity sector, Governor Nasir El-Rufai has said.

The Kaduna State governor spoke on Wednesday after the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting in uja.

Mr El-Rufai, who said “the entire (electricity) sector is broken,” said such expenditure by the Muhammadu Buhari administration on a privatised sector was “unsustainable.”

“The entire sector is broken, the tariff is an issue, the way the privatization was done is an issue to many. So there are many many issues. What we have agreed on is that there are fundamental problem in the electronic supply industry. And that you cannot privatize an industry and then over three years since privatization, you pump in N1.7 trillion of government into it, that is not privatisation.

“The federal government has supported the electricity sector with N1.7 trillion in the last three years and this is not sustainable.”

The governor urged Nigerians not to pass a judgement on the electricity sector until a NEC committee he is part of submits its report.

“I will plead that we don’t begin to pass judgement until we submit our final report.

“The problems in electricity are many, capacity is one perhaps. There are some that have shown lack of capacity it is true but there are many that are fantastic, so it is very difficult to pass quick judgement,” he said.

The governor said solutions that would be painful to some parties would have to be adopted in the electricity sector.

“Those solutions are not going to be nice, they may be painful but the only way to solve the structural problems in the industry is to take some very difficult decisions. There are many issues including the ones you have observed in Kano DISCO. Our hope is that when we must have presented our report, we would have identified issues and isolated these issues and would present options to the government that would have costs and benefits.

“Because we continue to spend N1.7 trillion every three years. The question is if we continue like this, are we getting electricity, industrialization, that is one option. We can also look at other options and have cost and benefits attached to it for the consideration of the economic council of government.

“So, my appeal is that let’s not be quick to pass judgement. Right now we are listening to all the stakeholders, of course, there is a lot of blame game. At the end of the day, we must have an honest conversation as Nigerians and know that unless we fix electricity we cannot make progress. And this electricity is required not only in the cities but in every home, every rural area. How do we fix the structural problem in the industry so that it doesn’t cost the government this much to cover the whole of the country.

“Today, there are 80 million Nigerians that do not have access to electricity. We cannot continue like this.

“So, we will ask all these questions, look at everything you have observed and even those that you have not observed. But we want to listen to Nigerians and get their own views and incorporate those views in every solution that we propose.”

Nigeria recently signed a deal with Siemens of Germany to revamp its electricity sector and ultimately produce and utilise over 20,000 megawatts of electricity, for a country barely able to generate and distribute 5,000 megawatts.

However, many Nigerians foresee obstacles to the implementation of the agreement especially as two of three key electricity stages have been privatised.

Nigeria privatised its electricity generation and distribution segments to various firms during the Goodluck Jonathan administration. Only the transmission segement is owned by the federal government.

Some Nigerians like the Nigeria Labour Congress have called for the reversal of the privatisation while others have suggested the government should buy-back the electricty generation and distribution firms from the private companies.

PoliticsPHOTOS: Trucks Conveying Protesting PDP Members Collide In Abuja by Ecstasy154(op): 9:18pm On Jan 20, 2020
It was a sad experience for some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after they were involved in an accident on Monday.

Thousands of PDP faithful had occupied the streets of Abuja and some major cities in the country in what they described as the ‘mother of all protests’.

The protest was against the judgement of the Supreme Court delivered on Tuesday last week in which the court sacked the PDP governorship candidate in Imo State and declared Senator Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the winner of the March 9 poll.

While the protest went smoothly in some cities, it was a sad event for some PDP faithful in the nation’s capital as two trucks conveying protesters collided.

One of the trucks was stationed at the junction of a major road while the other which was approaching lost control in apparent stunt and collided with the first vehicle.

A number of protesters are feared to have sustained various degrees of injury while it has yet to be ascertained if anybody died in the incident.

PoliticsFayemi: APC May Collapse When Buhari Leaves Office by Ecstasy154(op): 6:09pm On Jan 19, 2020
Kayode Fayemi, governor of Ekiti state, says the All Progressives Congress (APC) may cease to exist at the end of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure.

Fayemi said this in reaction to the reports on the move by some party members to remove Adams Oshiomhole as chairman of the APC.

Speaking in an interview with Daily Trust, Fayemi likened rumours of a rift between some governors and Oshiomhole to making a mountain out of a molehill.

In November, the APC faction loyal to Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo state, suspended Oshiomhole after a no-confidence vote was passed on him.

But Fayemi said the governors were instrumental to the emergence of Oshiomhole, adding that they only want to be respected as party leaders and have their views taken into consideration.

“The governors were instrumental to the emergence of Adams Oshiomhole as the chairman of the party. He was their colleague, so they worked together. I don’t think there’s a view about the leadership of the party in the PGF. I think there’s a clear view that the party can do a lot more than it has done,” Fayemi said.

“If we are not careful; if we do not institutionalise processes and procedures in the party and make it more inclusive than it is, we will not have a party when President Muhammadu Buhari leaves government. This is because he is the unifying force of our party.

“The governors want the party structures to function effectively and more regularly. Adams will also say that some of us have been at the forefront of pushing for even policy convention on an annual basis.

“Adams is a veteran, passionate and an ideological politician. I have worked with him closely. So I don’t see a divergence in these views. But governors also want to be respected as leaders of the party. They don’t want their views to be given a short shrift.”

Asked to evaluate the performance of the country’s political leaders, Fayemi said they have neither failed or “given us all we would have loved to see in this democraticisation process.

“And I underline that word ‘process’ because democracy is not an event, it is a process. And when you have a process you want the journey to be linear and progressive. But in any journey, there are bumps, values and undulating lines.”

On electoral violence and ways to curb it, the governor said public office should be made less attractive than it is.

“I think that in totality, we are progressing, but not at the pace we ought to. You can see that the system is not in denial about it,” he said.

“We take two steps forward and 10 steps backwards. I think we owe ourselves a duty to see the urgency of these things. We are losing the youth of this country to frustration, despondency and despair.”

Commenting on security and the launch of “Amotekun” in the south-west region, Fayemi said the outfit was needed to complement the efforts of the “overstretched” police.

He said Nigeria has about 400,000 policemen for its almost 200 million population, and “it is not unlikely that we have up to 150,000 protecting VIPs”.

“So, what are we talking about? Even if the police put in their best efforts, we will still have challenges. That is the point we are making. And that is what recommends this community policing strategy.

Asked if the governors would not misuse the outfit for political gains during elections, Fayemi asked: “Does the Federal Government not misuse the police?

“I know what happened to me in 2014 during the election. I was a sitting governor. I had immunity, but I was assaulted. Go into the history book and check it; that was federal police.

“Any police can be mishandled. What we should be talking about is how to make sure that security institutions are more accountable within the framework of democratic control.”

PoliticsWe Are Ecstatic About Supreme Court Judgment On IMO, Says APC by Ecstasy154(op): 8:43pm On Jan 14, 2020
By Tony Akowe, Abuja

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said it was ecstatic over the Supreme Court’s declaration of its governorship candidate Senator Hope Uzodinma, as the rightful winner in the 2019 governorship election in IMO state.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Lanre Issa Onilu said in a statement that even the party was still wondering why we lost elections we clearly won in Zamfara State at the Supreme Court and how the same court ruled our party out of the electoral race in Rivers State, we have never, as a political party, lost faith in the judiciary.

Onilu said “We salute Senator Hope Uzodinma, our supporters and members for their temperance displayed in the aftermath of the blatant rigging of the Imo Governorship election. We chose to focus on the judicial route to reclaim the Party’s mandate. We are confident that our other stolen electoral mandates will be restored by the courts.”

The party calls on all Imo State APC stakeholders to come together in support of Senator Uzodinma to ensure the success of the Party’s Next Level agenda and to democratically entrench the APC in the state and entire South East.

The apex court on Tuesday annulled the election of Emeka Ihedioha and asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately issue certificate of return to Senator Uzodinma.

PoliticsGanduje Suspends Ban Of Male, Female On Same Tricycle by Ecstasy154(op): 10:11am On Dec 31, 2019
The suspension of the proposed banning of male and female on the same tricycle in Kano was greeted with jubilation in the ancient commercial city on Tuesday.

The Nation reports that Kano state Government suspended the implementation of the proposed ban, following public outcry and outright rejection.

It should be recalled that Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje had last week announced the plan through Commander General of Hisba Board, Harun Ibn-Sina at a function held at Bayero University Kano to effect the law from January 2020

A source from the government informed The Nation that the Governor has jettisoned the implementation of the law due to the controversy it has been generating and to safeguard the implementation from degenerating into crisis.

It was gathered that Governor Ganduje had gone into wide consultations and extensive deliberation with top government officials on their views on how to implement the law effective from January 1st,2020.

It was further gathered that he was advised not to implement the law nor make any statement about it considering the volatility of the situation on ground.

‘’You see we had to weight the option of effecting the law or otherwise. However, considering the feelers we are getting, it may lead to break down of law and order. Because how would those that would enforce the law differentiate a married man and his wife in a tricycle or otherwise, ‘’

‘’Similarly, we viewed it that the law is not new since it has been in existence since the Ibrahim Shekarau administration just that we had wanted to dust it from the shelve for enforcement. So the governor was convinced in the discussions to look the other way and the issue would die a natural death.’’

Another source, who confided with this reporter, said that “it could be the overzealousness of the Hisbah Board, DG’s unpopular perception, which he described as dead on arrival.

However, at the time of filing in this report, the government is yet to confirm the suspension of ban, while several efforts to get the views of the Chief Secretary Press to the Governor, Mallam Abba Auwal was not successful.

Politics2023 Presidency: Igbo Group Warns North To Respect Zoning by Ecstasy154(op): 1:59pm On Dec 28, 2019
An Igbo based group, Igbo Presidency Project Movement 2023 has warned people of Northern Nigeria to respect the zoning of the presidency and relinquish power to the South in 2023.

The group during a recent meeting in Awka described the calls by the Leader of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Yerima Shettima for the North to produce the president for the country in 2023 as insulting to the sensibility of the 365 ethnic groups that make up the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The group in a press statement released after its meeting in Awka and signed by its National Coordinator, Igboeli Arinzechukwu said it was an assault on the attempts to strengthen the nation’s unity, as well as her democracy.

Part of the statement read, “Nations are not held together by force but by a sense of justice, fairness and equity. Thus it is instrumental for young Nigerians like us who believe in the unity of Nigeria based on fairness and equity to immediately react to statements made by the coordinator of Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Yerima Shettima.

“Shettima clearly called for power to remain in the North after President Muhammadu Buhari would have exhausted his eight year tenure in 2023.

“Such a statement smacks largely of ignorance or contempt of the attempt by those who fought to restore our democracy and preserve the fragile unity of Nigeria by reaching the conventional notion of zoning which encouraged the rotation of the presidency between North and South.”

The group said the rotational presidency had remained a trend in Nigeria, “and has been followed almost religiously with the exception of the Goodluck Jonathan era which was brought upon us by the demise of President Umaru Musa Yar Adua in office but was immediately corrected in 2015 when these progressive forces brought change.”

They further stated that, “Shettima not only made the call for the presidency to remain in the North but also in a hubris like manner dismissed the morally backed agitation of NdiIgbo to produce one of its own for the office come 2023.

“While we agree that Shettima is entitled to his opinion, it is however more sacrosanct that we enlighten him and all others who may seek to toe such path by understanding the consequences of denying NdiIgbo and the SouthEast Region, the only major ethnic group that is yet to have a shot at the presidency since the return of democracy as well as the most marginalized group since independence as regards national leadership.

“We must warn that the situation today cannot accommodate the thinking of Yerima. Good leadership is not about where one comes from, however it is a given that the Nigerian nation and democracy is not yet mature for such, thus the need for zoning, and since all the zones in the south have had a shot at the presidency in the persons of Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan of both the SouthWest and South South respectively, then it behooves us in the spirit of equity and to strengthen the unity of this country allow a president of Igbo extraction.”

The group vowed not to leave any stone unturned in their attempt to achieve the goal by working with all stakeholders to deliver the presidency to the South East in 2023.

PoliticsGarba Shehu: Buhari’s Cabal Aren’t Hungry People, They Are Respectable Nigerians by Ecstasy154(op): 8:06pm On Dec 26, 2019
Members of the ‘cabal’ in the presidency are not hungry individuals and do not deserve the public criticism they get, a presidential aide has said.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, also said it was improper to refer to the president’s advisers as a ‘cabal’ and it is not true that they influence critical decisions of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

Mr Shehu made this known while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, on Christmas day.

Many Nigerians including the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, have said that there is a cabal of people who influence decisions taken by Mr Buhari and the presidency.

The men said to be members of the cabal include a relative of the president, Mamman Daura; an associate of the president, Isa Funtua; and the Chief of Staff to the president, Abba Kyari.

Mrs Buhari has at several instances accused the men of controlling her husband.

She also recently accused Mr Shehu of receiving instructions from the cabal to the detriment of her husband and his immediate family. She asked him to resign or be relieved of his position.

Mr Shehu has refused to join words with the first lady but on Wednesday denied that the cabal members have a sinister motive.

He said contrary to the false belief that the cabal manipulates the president, ”they are respectable Nigerians who deserve respect because they have achieved a lot.”

“A lot of people who are being dragged into this cabal thing, they are respectable Nigerians who have achieved a lot for themselves and for the nation. They are not there as hungry people who are there to grab things for themselves,” he said.

He also said Nigerians should not brand persons close to President Buhari who have offered to serve the nation as members of a ‘cabal.’

“Nigerians have formed the practice by labeling people that are in some advisable positions of the president as a cabal.

“People (cabals) should not be labelled negatively simply because they have offered themselves to support the president of this country,” he said.

PoliticsShiites Attend Church Service, Present Gift by Ecstasy154(op): 6:46pm On Dec 25, 2019
Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, popularly called Shiites, on Wednesday, attended a Christmas Church service at Church of the Advent, Samaru, Zaria.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria shortly after the service, the leader of the team, Prof. Isa Hassan-Mshelgaru, said the essence of attending the service was to promote love, tolerance, and understanding among Nigerians.

The service was conducted at Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, Diocese of Zaria, Church of the Advent, Samaru, Kaduna State.

“We came to celebrate Christmas with fellow Christians here because we consider them as our brothers and we don’t have anything to give them than to come and celebrate this day with them.

“As they consider this day very important, we also consider it very important, we feel that we should come and visit them so as to clear some of the unnecessary imaginary boundaries that have been created.

“There are some imaginary boundaries that could not be seen that kept us far away from each other, so, we want to breach this gap, so that we come together as brothers and sisters living in the same country and same locality,” he said.

Hassan-Mshelgaru appealed to other Nigerians, whether Muslims, Christians or traditionalists to shun all forms of hatred, saying that religion was not all about hate but a means of bonding people together.

“You can be a Muslim, a Christian or a Traditionalist, always bear in mind that religion should be a platform for bringing people together not separating them.

“So, my appeal is that Nigerians should come together under the same umbrella as we live in the same country to ensure united and formidable country,” he said.

The Vica of the Church, Rev. Isuwa Sa’idu expressed appreciation for the visit and urged the visitors to sustain the tempo for the good of the nation.

“In fact, I am so excited that they can think of a thing like this to come and visit us on Christmas Day celebration like this.

“When we first got the news of their coming, I was just so overwhelmed and I said I can’t wait for that day to come, here and behold the day has come, the visit had really gladdened our hearts,” he said.

According to him, the visit shows that Nigerians are looking for peace and they are actually pursuing it and not just pursuing it with words but with action.

“So, their action of rising to come to visit us has shown that truly we have found that peace.

“Because Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace and if everybody will behave like our friends and brothers, the Muslim Brothers, I don’t think we will have problems in this country.”

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the visitors presented a gift to the Church as a sign of love.

Christianity EtcReligious Persecution: US Places Nigeria On Special Watch List Of Countries by Ecstasy154(op): 11:02am On Dec 21, 2019
The U.S. government has added Nigeria to a “Special Watch List (SWL)” of countries that have engaged in or tolerated “severe violations of religious freedom.”

This is coming at a time many Nigerians and the international community have criticised the Nigerian government for its serial violations of court orders and the shrinking civic and media space in the country.

The inclusion of Nigeria in the religion violations list was announced by the U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo.

“On December 18, 2019, the Department of State re-designated Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan as Countries of Particular Concern under the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 for having engaged in or tolerated “systematic, ongoing, [and] egregious violations of religious freedom.”

“The Department renewed the placement of Comoros, Russia, and Uzbekistan on a Special Watch List (SWL) for governments that have engaged in or tolerated “severe violations of religious freedom,” and added Cuba, Nicaragua, Nigeria, and Sudan to this list,” Mr Pompeo said.

According to Mr Pompeo, the U.S. also designated al-Nusra Front, al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula, al-Qa’ida, al-Shabab, Boko Haram, the Houthis, ISIS, ISIS-Khorasan, and the Taliban as Entities of Particular Concern.

USCIRF report

The 2018 report of the United States Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), which recommended Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), noted that religious freedom trended negatively in 2018.

“Religious freedom conditions in Nigeria trended negatively in 2018. The Nigerian government at the national and state levels continued to tolerate violence and discrimination on the basis of religion or belief, and suppressed the freedom to manifest religion or belief.”

The report added that “religious sectarian violence increased during the year, with Muslims and Christians attacked based on their religious and ethnic identity”

Another case cited is the violation of rights of Shi’a members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN).

“The Nigerian military and government continued to violate the religious freedom and human rights of the Shi’a members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN). IMN leader Sheikh Ibrahim Al Zak Zaky remained in detention”.

“However, in 12 Muslim-majority northern Nigerian states, federalism has allowed the adoption of Islamic Shari’ah law in the criminal codes. The Nigerian constitution also establishes the roles of customary law and Shari’ah courts for Islamic personal law, family”.

PREMIUM TIMES has reported on how the Nigerian government has continued to clamp down on Shiites with maximum force since 2015. Over 300 members of the Shiite IMN were killed in December 2015 for blocking a public road.

The leader of the IMN, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, and his wife, Zeenah, have been detained since then for their alleged roles in the death of a soldier during the massacre. Nobody has been prosecuted for the mass murder of the Shiites by Nigerian soldiers.

Dozens of Shiites demanding the release of Mr El-Zakzaky and his wife have been killed since the 2015 incident.

The Nigerian government and the Kaduna State government have in the past accused the Shiites of disobeying constituted authority and not recognising the government.

The government also denied that it was tolerating or engaging in violations of religious freedom, saying crimes such as those occurring in the Middle-belt states of Benue and Plateau were more economic, between herders and farmers, than religious.

The government also said it was doing everything possible to tackle such crimes across the country.

Perhaps based on the clarifications by the government, the U.S. did not designate Nigeria a CPC but rather included the country in the lower level SWL.

Reactions

International human rights lawyer, Emmanuel Ogebe, in reaction to the development, highlighted the shortcomings of the USCIRF report saying it lacked accuracy and was not robust enough.

“We are happy to note that despite these shortcomings, the US government saw enough to escalate Nigeria’s designation to the penultimate Warning Watchlist. Nigeria is the most dangerous place in the world to be a Christian and it is high time this is recognized,” he said.

“With the atrocities committed by the Major Gen. Buhari in the 2019 reporting period including the elimination of Christians from top government positions and replacement with Muslims, such as Chief Justice Onnoghen amongst others, it is very likely that Nigeria will join the list of the global worst persecutors by next year,” Mr Ogebe said in a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES on Friday.

The rights activist, however, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to be fair in his treatment of all Nigerians, something the presidency has always said Mr Buhari does.

In addition, U.S. Congressman Chris Smith welcomed the addition of Nigeria to the SWL.

Mr Smith, who had visited Nigeria to consult with stakeholders on religious freedom, promised that “We will pay particular attention to Nigeria and the deteriorating situation under the government of President Muhammadu Buhari in the year ahead.”

He added, “President Buhari must address the murderous attacks conducted by Fulani extremists on Christians in the Middle Belt and the oppression of Shia Muslims in Kaduna State.”

Congressman Smith stayed further, “I also call upon the State Department to monitor the actions of Miyetti Allah with regard to its complicity in attacks by Fulani extremists.”

Politics22 Ex-governors Under Probe, On Trial – Malami by Ecstasy154(op): 8:44pm On Dec 19, 2019
Ade Adesomoju, Abuja

Not less than 22 former governors are either on trial or facing investigations over corruption allegations, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), has said.

Malami, who spoke at a meeting with journalists at his office in Abuja on Thursday, did not name the affected former governors.

When asked, the minister also said he could not comment on the fate of his predecessor, Mr. Mohammed Adoke (SAN), who arrived Nigeria from Dubai, the United Arab Emirate, and immediately arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday.

The minister, who sought the support of journalists in the fight against corruption, said “the failure to address corruption inhibits sustainable long growth which undermines national development”.

He also said the regime’s fight against corruption “is total, comprehensive and dispassionate devoid of any political or ethnic sentiments or inclination”.

According to him, “the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, was able to, from 2015 to September 2019 convict 1, 636 persons involved in corruption related offences.”

He also referred to the conviction of former Governors Orji Kalu of Abia State, Joshua Dariye of Plateau State, and Jolly Nyame of Taraba State, who are currently serving jail terms for corruption.

He added, “It might interest you to note that former state Governors and even serving senators are not spared.

“Currently, high profile personalities including judicial officers and former governors indicted for corruption have been prosecuted and many sentenced to jail.

“We have three former governors convicted and serving various jail terms for corruption related crimes while in office.

“Equally, twenty-two ex-governors are either under probe or on trail.”

PoliticsYahoo Boy Hacked Into My Account – Fashola by Ecstasy154(op): 8:37pm On Dec 17, 2019
By David O Royal

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has spoken on being defrauded of the sum of N3.1 million by a Yahoo Boy who is currently being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

You would recall that Malik Wakili was docked at the Federal High Court, Lagos, for allegedly impersonating the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola.

He was accused of committing fraud using the minister’s name in March 2019.

The EFCC told Justice C.J. Aneke that Wakili conspired with one Abdullahi Umar, who is at large, “to fraudulently impersonate the former Lagos State governor with intent to gain a monetary advantage for themselves.”

The defendant “converted the total sum of N3,106,216, being the value of the minister’s air-miles Skywards Account Number EK248739282 with the Emirate Airlines and which sum they reasonably ought to have known formed part the proceeds of their unlawful activity, to wit: fraud.”

The Minister speaking on the incident, said the amount mentioned was the worth of Air Miles which the suspect derived from fraudulently hacking into his internet account and creating a false identity which he, among other benefits, used to buy first-class tickets to various parts of the world.

Fashola said this in a statement issued by his spokesman, Hakeem Bello.

The statement read: “The Minister neither knew nor transacted any business with the suspect that involved or would have led to his being swindled.

“The amount being mentioned was the worth of Air Miles which the suspect derived from fraudulently hacking into his (Minister’s) internet account and creating a false identity which he, among other benefits, used to buy first-class tickets to various parts of the world.

“Having persistently hacked into the accounts for over a period of six years, the suspect was tracked by the Minister until enough evidence was gathered which was then passed on to the security agencies.”
