ORTOM GETS PEACE AWARD FOR ANTI-OPEN GRAZING LAW By Tahav Agerzua A group, Tiv Professionals Group, has conferred a peace award on Governor Samuel Ortom for signing into law the anti-open grazing bill. The conferment was made on Monday during a courtesy call on the Governor at the Benue Peoples House, in Makurdi by the group led by Professor Zacharys Gundu. Presenting the award, Professor Gundu commended the Governor for taking what he described as a bold initiative to secure lives and property in the State. The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Benue State University, decried the spate of destruction caused by herdsmen across the State, describing the development as the heighest form of impunity against the people of the state. Leader of the delegation described the threats by Fulani groups as high treason which must be taken seriously and reported to national and international bodies. He urged the Governor to spear head pressure on the federal government to establish a Commission for the reconstruction of the Middle Belt especially states attacked by armed herdsmen and also appeal to his colleagues to also enact similar laws in order to ensure that ranching becomes the template for livestock breeding and management in the country. Receiving the award, Governor Ortom expressed appreciation to the group for taking note of his efforts at providing security in the state, adding that the award would spur him to do more for the people of the state. He said the group had demonstrated patriotism and commitment for value addition to his administration adding that this kind of uncommon support cannot go unnoticed and unrewarded. The Governor stated that the group had encouraged him to put the law in place saying it was the best strategy for peace between farmers and herders. http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/59986239/

The lawyer standing for kidnap kingpin , Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike , aka Evans, has lost yet another case in court Evans’ counsel , Olukoya Ogungbeje , was defeated on Friday , when Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court in Lagos dismissed two fundamental rights applications filed by him , according to an online medium , NewsMakers. Ogungbeje had reportedly filed the case on behalf of his clients , Messrs Chief Kenneth Chukwuemeka Ajoku and Chidinma Ozurumba , against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission , but it was dismissed for lack of merit and for being frivolous . The judge also awarded a total cost of N 500 ,000 against the two petitioners . Other respondents in Ajoku ’s suit are a Lagos -based lawyer , Mr . Taiwo Kupolati , Folorunsho Sholanke , Jide Olaleye , Abraham Ogunleye , Kolade Akinwunmi and Dr. Ishaku Danladi Msheliza . The two petitioners , in suits marked FHC / L / CS/ 736 / 2017 and FHC / L / CS 803 / 2017, had urged the court to declare that the arrest and detention by the operatives and agents of EFCC on May 4, at the instigation of other respondents for taking up the brief of his client and without cause, was “illegal , wrongful, unlawful , and unconstitutional as it violates the applicant’ s fundamental rights as guaranteed under sections 33 , 34 , 35 and 36 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria . ” Responding to the suits , the EFCC, in two separate counter – affidavits deposed to by Ayodele Samuel and Makinde Adebayo , and argued before the court by Banjo James , urged the judge to refuse the applicants’ applications for being frivolous and lacking in merit . A victim ’s son had revealed that his 86 – year -old father was killed by Evans and his gang after he had paid a huge ransom . Delivering judgment on the two applications on Friday , Justice Buba , while dismissing the two applications for lacking in merit and being frivolous , awarded a total cost of N 500 ,000 against the two applicants in favour of the EFCC and other respondents . http://newsnownigeria.com.ng/evans-lawyer-loses-court-case-to-pay-n500000-fine/

Chelsea have fallen behind in the race to sign Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci, according to reports in Italy. The centre-back have been linked with a host of clubs this summer, but the Italian champions have already insisted Bonucci is not for sale. Tuttosport claim that of several sides chasing his signature, Barcelona are the favourites to seal the transfer. Torino head coach Sinisa Mihajlovic admits his club won't resist crazy money for Chelsea target Belotti: ''Will he stay? I hope so. President isn’t thinking of selling him. Then there’s the €100m release clause. If someone pays it then a flood of money will arrive. It’s not just about replacing Belotti, it’s worse than that. It’s hard to find someone else who pulls their teammates forward and scores 26 goals

The speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Kabiru Rurum, has resigned amidst allegation of collecting money to scuttle the investigation of the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II. The House had moved to investigate the Emir for alleged corruption, but later backed down. Kano’s anti-corruption agency also suspended its investigation of the monarch after prominent Nigerians, including Acting President Osinbajo, intervened. The speaker, Mr. Rurum, faced allegation of being bribed to discontinue the probe, an allegation he denied. Mr. Rurum resigned on Monday in a letter read at plenary by the Deputy Speaker, Ibrahim Chidariof, who presided over the sitting on Monday. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the former speaker was alleged to have collected N100 million from business mogul Aliko Dangote but failed to share the money to the members. He had earlier at a news briefing before the assembly went on Sallah recess, denied the allegation and threatened to sue an online media organisation that first published the report. The deputy speaker, who read the letter, said Mr. Rurum resigned to protect his image due to allegations bordering on corruption leveled against him by some of the members. NAN reports that shortly after the letter was read and accepted, the lawmakers elected the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Abdullahi Atta, as the new Speaker. Mr. Atta, who represents Fagge constituency, was nominated for the position by Babangida Yakudima and Zubairu Mamuda and the nomination was unanimously accepted by the members including Mr. Rurum who was at the sitting. Championship club Aston Villa have signed former Chelsea and England captain John Terry. The 36-year-old defender, whose contract at Stamford Bridge expired last month has signed a one-year deal with the Championship club. Villa in an official statement wrote: "John Terry will wear the No.26 this season. Terry joined us this morning on a free transfer after the expiration of his contract at former club Chelsea. "The former England captain has worn the No.26 all throughout his senior career at the Blues. And he will be reunited with the number for the 2017/18 campaign after penning his one-year deal." Terry, who won 78 caps for England, played 717 games for Chelsea and won his fifth Premier League title in May. Villa finished 13th in the Championship last season but Steve Bruce's side are among the favourites to win automatic promotion to the top flight in 2017-18. Birmingham City manager Harry Redknapp said in June that his club had made an offer to Terry, who announced in April that he would be leaving Chelsea. Terry has played for only two other English clubs - Chelsea and Nottingham Forest, with whom he had a short loan spell in 2000.

Chelsea FC and Nike today unveil our new home and away kits for the 2017/18 season. It marks the first collaboration of this exciting partnership, in which Nike will produce strips for the first team, Academy and Ladies teams, as well as a full range of apparel and training wear for millions of Blues supporters around the world. 2017/18 HOME KIT A minimalist look creates a Chelsea home shirt that is modern and at the same time rooted in the club’s heritage. A key stage in the design process was ensuring the blue is a perfect match for the club’s specific shade. An original shirt from the early 1970s was used to define the desired blue and Nike Football’s apparel technicians produced a perfect match. This Chelsea blue is combined with contemporary design details and Nike AeroSwift technology to deliver a kit fit for champions. The round neckline includes a white trim with ‘CHELSEA’ knitted into the back of the neck in white text, while the shorts feature white stripes on the flanks – these, along with blue stripes on the sides of the shirt, expand when the player is in motion to enhance ventilation. ‘THE BLUES’ is written inside the cuff of the right sleeve and the left sleeve is adorned with ‘EST. 1905’, referencing the year of the club’s formation. A blue ‘CFC’ motif features on the front of the white socks, which integrate NikeGrip technology for the ultimate boot-to-foot connection. 2017/18 AWAY KIT The modern era has seen unprecedented success for Chelsea, with us having won every major honour in domestic and European football, as well as the Academy and Ladies teams lifting trophies. The away shirt and shorts are white with a soft silver hue to reflect this collection of silverware. As in the home kit, a fusion of technology and club heritage details combine to create a modern kit that feels truly Chelsea. Nike AeroSwift innovation provides advanced garment technology facilitating football at its fastest and the same Chelsea specific references as the home kit are embedded into the fabric. The 2017/18 home and away kits are available now from nike.com/chelsea and in our brand new Stamford Bridge Megastore. Share this article |

Eden Hazard, Demba Ba part of new San Diego NASL club's ownership A San Diego-area expansion team will start play in the North American Soccer League next year, with Eden Hazard, Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye, and Moussa Sow all part of the ownership group. The Southern California city is currently without a professional soccer team, though a separate ownership group, which includes former U.S. star Landon Donovan, is also trying to win a bid for a Major League Soccer expansion team. The MLS bid has the support of the mayor but has been met with controversy, with opponents saying FS Investors are primarily concerned with its massive SoccerCity development project, which will include hotel and retail space on the site of Qualcomm Stadium, the former home of the NFL's Chargers. Bob Watkins, the NASL team's president, told the San Diego Union-Tribune that his group was "soccer specific" in contrast, and is purposely avoiding a downtown venue in favor of a 10,000-seat stadium that could open as early as next August. The NASL faced financial difficulty last year, but expanded to California with the San Francisco Deltas beginning play this season, while a new Orange County team will also start in 2018, about 100 miles north of the San Diego club. Henry Bello, a disgruntled Nigerian medical doctor, on Friday, barged into the Bronx Lebanon Hospital Centre, New York, United States with an armed rifle, killing one and injuring six others. According to the New York Police Department, Bello, 45, also opened fire on himself and died in the process. Bello, was found dead on the 17th floor of the facility, the city police told NBC News. The gunfire was first reported at 3pm on the eighth floor of the hospital and it was immediately placed on lockdown as police launched a floor-by-floor search for the armed intruder. “This would appear, preliminarily, to be a former employee dressed in a hospital jacket similar to what you would see a doctor wearing, who is familiar with the hospital, which makes the situation a lot more problematic,” officials said, adding that Bello had a rifle, possibly an AR-15 type assault rifle, and had previously worked at the hospital. Just before 4pm, the Assistant Commissioner for Communication for the NYPD, Peter Donald, announced the search for the suspect was over. “One shooter is deceased at the hospital,” he said. Before killing himself, Bello tried to start a fire on the 16th floor that was doused by the hospital’s sprinkler system, a senior official with direct knowledge of the incident said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced in a tweet later that the situation was not an act of terrorism. There were major warning signs in Bello’s life before the mass shooting, which spanned two floors as Bello opened fire on hospital employees, including other doctors. He had a criminal history. Dr. Bello had three prior arrests, including one for sexual abuse. The New York Post reported that Bello was arrested in August 2004 in Manhattan “following an incident in which a 23-year-old woman said an assailant grabbed her crotch, held her arms, lifted her up and carried her off, saying, ‘You’re coming with me.'” Bello was “charged with sex abuse and unlawful imprisonment, sources said. The disposition of the case was unclear,” reported The Post, which added that records against Bello in a 2009 case are sealed. The gunman also had personal troubles, although they were in the far past. In 2002, Bello was listed as a respondent in a California divorce that listed minor children. Bello was listed as a family physician on the hospital website. However, despite the fact that Bello is listed as a doctor on the hospital website, The New York Post reported that “there are no state records of a Henry Bello with a medical license.” A Dr. Henry Bello comes up as a “student in an Organized Health Care Education/Training Program” in the National Provider Identifier Database. The New York Times reported that Bello had “received a limited permit to practice as an international medical graduate” to gain experience but the permit expired in 2016. He previously had a pharmacy technician license in California, according to the newspaper. I |
