Confusion as Customs Claim Nigerians Win eAuctions in Lifeless Website Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), said that 43 people have won the bidding of vehicles in the first 48 hours of the newly launched e-auction platform, though the portal is still not functional as at the time of filing this report. Joseph Attah, public relations officer of NCS, told NAN that the platform, which was launched on Monday by Hameed Ali, Customs comptroller-general, is active and working despite claims from interested bidders that they could not access the Customs’s auction websites. Contrary to claims by Attah that the platform is active and working, TheCable discovered that the website could not be accessed at various intervals on Wednesday as the page displayed an error message. “Dear user, the requested page was not found (error 404).” NAN corroborated this claim as it reports that the website could not be accessed between 4:10pm and 4:45pm on Wednesday. “NAN reported that between 4:10 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, July 5, the platform was showing ‘Under Maintenance’,” the news agency wrote. “The platform also gave an instruction saying: ‘Dear user, the server is currently undergoing scheduled maintenance or upgrade. Please refresh the page in a few minutes.” At times when the website was functional, attempts made by TheCable to register and bid on the platform (https://app.trade.gov.ng/eauction/auction/list/all) failed as the website rejected genuine tax identification numbers. According to the terms and conditions on the website, interested bidders would have to pay an administrative charge of N1000 to any branch of Jaiz bank. The Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami and his counterpart in the Ministry of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed have given separate explanations on the rift between the Senate and executive over the confirmation of nominees. The Senate had suspended the confirmation of all nominees from the executive until all issues of confirmation as contained in the Constitution were adhered to. The Attorney-General told State House correspondents after the FEC meeting on Wednesday that the matter does not constitute an issue for the Federal Executive Council, saying the Council cannot begin to defend what it did not decide on. He said: “The fundamental consideration about the alleged statement is the fact that at no point ever did the Federal Executive Council sat down to arrive at the decision in one way or the other as far as the issue of nomination or otherwise is concerned. So I do not think it constitutes an issue for the Federal Executive Council to start to make any clarification about because it has never been considered by the Federal Executive Council”. On his part, Mr Lai Mohammed noted that the issue was being addressed and resolved through an efficient mechanism. Whatever may be the misunderstanding between the National Assembly and the executive will have an excellent mechanism for resolving it. We believe that government is executive, legislative and judiciary; whatever might be the problem, we are resolving it and we are addressing it,” Mr Mohammed said. https://newsnownigeria.com.ng/malami-lai-mohammed-differ-senate-executive-rift/

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, says no fewer than 43 persons have won the bidding of vehicles in the first 48 hours of the newly launched e-auction platform. Joseph Attah, the Public Relations Officer, told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Wednesday in Abuja that the platform “is active and working.” Mr. Attah made the clarification following numerous complaints from interested bidders that they could not access the Customs’ auction websites. The Comptroller-General of Customs, Hameed Ali, on July 3 in Abuja inaugurated the e-auction platform aimed at giving all Nigerians equal opportunities to partake in bidding for seized vehicles and to increase Customs’ revenue. “At the first day of the launching, there were technical challenges with the e-auction platform and these challenges have already been resolved. “Potential bidders can now register smoothly without hitches. “The first 48 hours expired at 12noon on Wednesday and already 43 persons have won the bidding including a journalist, so you can see this platform is working. “For now, it is only Jaiz bank that is on the platform, other designated banks are having Interswitch issues and they will soon be on board as soon as they ratify the issues. I understand that today one bank will soon be on board,’’ he said. Mr. Attah called on potential bidders to be calm and make use of the bank available on the platform for now until other banks could come on board. “For those trying to register, they should go to the designated bank area on the platform, click on the Jaiz bank and print out the page from their system and go to the bank to pay. “This means the person has activated with Jaiz bank and the bank can key you into the bank system to enable you pay the N1 000 administrative fee, which will be transferred to your e-wallet,’’ he said. NAN reports that between 4:10 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, July 5, the platform was showing “Under Maintenance’’. The platform also gave an instruction saying: “Dear user, the server is currently undergoing scheduled maintenance or upgrade. Please refresh the page in a few minutes.’’ However, after many attempts to refresh the page by NAN correspondent, it still showed the same instruction. (NAN)

My argument on why the Orton should be allowed to take the credit for the Open Grazing Prohibition and Establishment of Ranches Law of Benue Mimi Atedze wall. ====≠===================================== This is why I disagree with you sis. Ortom is perfectly in the right to celebrate this Law as its achievement. He is the one that will pay the political price for this Law. He could have decided he wasn't go to hearken to our suggestions and go right ahead to pass whatever Law that suits his political interest. But he listened and passed the most revolutionary and the single most important Law yet to come out of Benue since its creation in 1976. On the Law being puts on daily rotation on Benue Radio, it is how it should be. Our people needs to be aware of it, needs education as to its provisions and more significantly, needs to know the sacrifices that they are expected to take on, as a result of its implementation. What other right place to do this than Benue Radio? I have accused the Benue State Government of not doing enough to educate us on this Law. I'm very glad they listened. On the question of MAFO, no one can minimized their contribution to this Law. It is the same way, no one can minimize the contribution of the Benue People who resisted the imposition of a Bill on them that could scarcely serve their interests. I do not think the MAFO put up the fight they did because they wanted recognition, credit or political points for the Bill. They did this because they wanted their voices heard, the Bill to be passed, and Open grazing prohibited. To say that the Government of Benue State should be giving credit to MAFO for the Bill is a little too rich. Once a Law is passed, it becomes the government's Law. The process that led up to it is forgotten. The champions may be feted privately but that is about it. The Government takes full ownership of the Law. They have to do so to pump enough juice into their system to implement it. This is exactly what Ortom is doing, and in as much as I criticize him for other things, he is untouchable in my view as far as this Law goes. He need our support to fight the single, most formidable, most well oiled and most powerful political machine in Nigeria -the Fulani. Obamacare was never written by the Obama administration, but he took full credit for it. It became his Law and at the same time, his albatross. |

GOVERNOR ORTOM’S ORDER TO REOPEN BSU By James Ibechi Whether it is executive fiat or order that anyone chooses to term it, what you cannot deny in a Governor is that the power to act in the interest of the state at any given time is vested in him - the Executive Governor of any state. Given that, by the Sunday order handed by the Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom to the Governing Council of the Benue State University, Makurdi, to reopen the varsity immediately, the governor must have exercised such power. It is expected that the governing council must reopen the varsity, and perhaps no-work-no pay regime may be applied on account of some lecturers who may refuse to comply with the order. Yet, this is all a conjecture. The order was prompted by the inability of the striking lecturers to call off their protracted ongoing industrial action after their long meeting held on Friday during which it was expected that they would call off the strike to enable the students who have been at home for over two months to return to school. This is despite the Governor’s candid efforts to see the lecturers return to classroom by paying them two-month salary for doing nothing; this is aside placing the lecturers on first line charge in terms of salary. What first line charge in this case has meant is, despite the economic crunch that is buffeting the state to the effect that payment of salaries of other category of government workers in the state and LG has stagnated for many months counting, the governor has ensured no dime is owed the striking lecturers. They have been preferentially paid up to date. The governor said he has done everything humanly possible to ensure that the lecturers shift their grounds by returning to the classrooms for the sake of the future of the undergraduates. ''I have made several appeals to ASUU in BSU to consider the plight of the innocent students and call off the strike action, but to no avail. I have also paid them additional two months salaries after initially agreeing to call off the strike, yet they collected the monies and remained adamant. The belligerent lecturers are demanding payment of their accrued academic earned allowance, among other demands, which Governor Ortom inherited from the previous administration. Now that the governor has ordered the reopening of the university, even amidst calls by stakeholders on the lecturers to consider the interest of students and the state and end the strike to no avail, it will be seen whether the university teachers will shift ground or prepared for a full blown fight with the government. In all of such battle, it is the students who are at the receiving end. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10211742198703675&set=a.2626379591967.127848.1629602346&type=3
