Edo state government has declared ten-day dusk-to-dawn curfew with effect from today in a bid to halt the spread of the coronavirus.

Governor Godwin Obaseki said the decision became necessary due to rising cases of covid-19 in the state.

The governor noted that the ten-day curfew is to ensure strict compliance with measures to curb the spread of the virus.

He added that the order will be reviewed after ten days, emphasizing that measures are in place to cushion the hardship citizens might face.

Edo procures more testing machines

In addition, the state government has also procured two more testing machines and 15 additional ventilators for the isolation centres in the state.

Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, disclosed this shortly after an inspection of the newly completed isolation centre in Benin.

Irrua in Edo state is one of the designated testing centres in the country and the only centre in the entire South South. Ironically, it is equipped with only one testing machine.

This has slowly aided the fight against the scourge especially to the Edo state government being the state with the highest number of cases in the whole zone.

The government is not taking this with kid gloves as it seems determined to take its destiny in its own hands and fight the pandemic head on.

To demonstrate its commitment, the state government has acquired 2 more testing machines which will be installed at the isolation centres at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

The newly built isolation centre is ready for use with fifteen ventilators and one testing machine.

U.S. President Donald Trump warned China on Saturday that it should face consequences if it was “knowingly responsible” for the coronavirus pandemic, as he ratcheted up criticism of Beijing over its handling of the outbreak.

“It could have been stopped in China before it started and it wasn’t, and the whole world is suffering because of it,” Trump told a daily White House briefing.

It was the latest U.S. volley in a war of words between the world’s two biggest economies, showing increased strains in relations at a time when experts say an unprecedented level of cooperation is needed to deal with the coronavirus crisis.

“If it was a mistake, a mistake is a mistake. But if they were knowingly responsible, yeah, I mean, then sure there should be consequences,” Trump said. He did not elaborate on what actions the United States might take.

Trump and senior aides have accused China of a lack of transparency after the coronavirus broke out late last year in its city of Wuhan. This week he suspended aid to the World Health Organization accusing it of being “China-centric.”

Washington and Beijing have repeatedly sparred in public over the virus. Trump initially lavished praise on China and his counterpart Xi Jinping for their response. But he and other senior officials have also referred to it as the “Chinese virus” and in recent days have ramped up their rhetoric.

They have also angrily rejected earlier attempts by some Chinese officials to blame the origin of the virus on the U.S. military.

Trump’s domestic critics say that while China performed badly at the outset and must still come clean on what happened, he is now seeking to use Beijing to help deflect from the shortcomings of his own response and take advantage of growing anti-China sentiment among some voters for his 2020 re-election bid.

At the same time, however, White House officials are mindful of the potential backlash if tensions get too heated. The United States is heavily reliant on China for personal protection equipment desperately needed by American medical workers, and Trump also wants to keep a hard-won trade deal on track.

Trump said that until recently the U.S.-China relationship had been good, citing a multi-billion agricultural agreement aimed at defusing a bitter trade war. “But then all of a sudden you hear about this,” he said.

He said the Chinese were “embarrassed” and the question now was whether what happened with the coronavirus was “a mistake that got out of control, or was it done deliberately?”

“There’s a big difference between those two,” he said.

Fellow Serie A side Sampdoria have seen five players and one staff member test positive for the virus as Italy continues to be among the worst-affected countries.

Manolo Gabbiadini was the first to test positive, before Omar Colley, Albin Ekdal, Antonino La Gumina, Morten Thorsby and Dr. Amedeo Baldari were subsequently diagnosed.

A 70-year-old man, John Eseigbe, has been arrested in Benin, Edo State for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl (name withheld).

The Commissioner for Social Development and Gender Issues, Mrs Maria Edeko, disclosed this in a chat with journalists in Benin City.

She said the 14-year-old girl iwas currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Edeko noted that the investigation was part of efforts by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration to ensure child molestation, rape and defilement were drastically reduced in the state.

She, however, disclosed that the girl’s health condition was getting stable.

According to her, “Governor Godwin Obaseki has said no child under his watch will be defiled, raped or molested. He is determined to ensure that the right of every girl-child in Edo State is protected.

“The issue of child defilement for Obaseki is a serious issue and culprits must be punished for their crimes. We are talking about the 14-year-old girl today. We will not turn a blind eye to such crime as offenders should be ready to go jail.”

The septuagenarian, however, denied the allegation.

He alleged that the girl, who lives with his family, stole from him and was sent packing by his wife.

He added that the parents of the girl are friends to his family, adding that he could not have jeopardised the long-standing relationship that exists between both families.

A newborn baby in England has tested positive for Covid-19. The infant is believed to be one of the world's youngest patients with the disease.

The mother was rushed to hospital days earlier with suspected pneumonia and she and her child are being treated at separate hospitals, according to The Sun newspaper, which first revealed the case.

The newspaper said the woman was tested at North Middlesex Hospital but the result was not known until after the birth. It is not known whether the child contracted the disease in the womb or was infected during birth.

North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust said: "Two patients at North Middlesex University Hospital have tested positive for coronavirus.


"One has been transferred to a specialist centre and one is being treated in an isolation room.

"The safety of our patients and staff is our top priority, so in following guidance from Public Health England, we are regularly deep cleaning the areas where the patients are cared for and staff who were in close contact with these patients were advised to self-isolate."

Chief Medical Officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty, has previously said he does not think pregnant women should start worrying about the coronavirus.

Scientists at the institute have also improved diagnostic capacity for the virus and harnessed the production of antibodies to treat those with the disease, sources said.

Once a vaccine for coronavirus is announced, it will undergo a series of tests and experiments lasting over several months before it is deemed safe to use.

When asked about the development, Israel's defence ministry denied the reports.

"There has been no breakthrough in the efforts of the biological institute to find a vaccine for the coronavirus or to develop testing kits. The institute's work is conducted according to an orderly work plan and it will take time. If and when there will be something to report, it will be done in an orderly fashion," it said.

"The biological institute is a world-renowned research and development agency, which relies on experienced researchers and scientists with great knowledge and quality infrastructures. There are now more than 50 experienced scientists working at the institute on researching and developing a medical remedy for the virus."

The Institute for Biological Research was tasked by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to develop a vaccine for coronavirus on 1 February.
There have been around 100 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Israel, many of whom had recently returned from abroad.

Earlier this week, Israel imposed a two-week quarantine on all travellers entering the country, toughening already significant travel restrictions.

Entry has been barred to almost all non-residents arriving from France, Germany, Spain, Austria and Switzerland, with Israel declaring that arrivals from those nations could only enter if they could prove they had a place to stay in quarantine.

Since COVID-19 emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December, scientists around the world have been frantically working to find a vaccine.

However, the development process takes months and is likely too late for the current outbreak.
