The naira recorded a modest appreciation at the official foreign exchange market in mid-week trading, extending a gradual recovery trend amid improving sentiment around Nigeria’s macroeconomic outlook.
According to official data published on the website of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the local currency strengthened at the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM) window.
At the official market, the naira closed at N1,359 per dollar on Wednesday, improving from N1,367/$ on Tuesday and N1,384.5/$ on Monday.
However, in the parallel market, the currency recorded a mild depreciation, trading at N1,453.13/$ on Wednesday compared with N1,445.00/$ on Tuesday.
The spread between the official and parallel market rates narrowed to N94, down from N96 recorded a week earlier, indicating gradual convergence between both market segments.
External Reserves Provide Support
Nigeria’s external reserves stood at $46.59 billion as of February 2, 2026, according to CBN data. The reserve position continues to provide short-term intervention capacity and support exchange rate stability.
Analysts say the strengthening at the official window reflects improved dollar liquidity, sustained foreign reserve levels, tighter monetary policy, and renewed investor confidence.
The latest figures suggest easing pressure on the local currency, as narrowing rate differentials point to better liquidity conditions and strengthening confidence in ongoing foreign exchange reforms.
Recent Volatility and Recovery
Last week, the naira traded at N1,394/$ at the official market, reflecting persistent volatility within the foreign exchange space.
This week’s close at N1,359/$ represents a notable appreciation, reinforcing signs of gradual stability in official market pricing.
2026 Outlook
Investment firm CardinalStone projected that the naira could trade within a band of N1,350 to N1,450 per dollar in 2026.
The projection is anchored on expectations of stronger capital inflows, moderated import demand, and sustained monetary discipline.
Investor sentiment also received support after S&P Global Ratings reaffirmed Nigeria’s sovereign credit rating at B-, maintaining a positive outlook and citing improvements in fiscal coordination and external balances.

Residents of Akpachi community in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State have raised serious security and humanitarian concerns over the alleged occupation of their farmlands by more than 100 armed Fulani herdsmen.
The herdsmen are accused of forcefully occupying farmlands and destroying crops, a situation residents warn could lead to widespread hunger, displacement, and violent conflict if urgent intervention is not taken.
According to community members, the armed herders are reportedly laying siege to Akpachi, Otukpo, and neighbouring Ugobia communities, positioning themselves in nearby bushes and allegedly setting up ambushes ahead of possible attacks, sparking fear among locals.
SaharaReporters gathered that on January 10, the herders invaded farmlands belonging to Barrister Godwin Obla (SAN), burning and destroying crops spread across more than 152 hectares of land. The affected farms reportedly included rice, cassava, plantain, and cashew plantations.
The incident has forced many residents to abandon their farms and remain indoors for fear of being attacked, worsening food insecurity in the area.
Traditional Ruler Issues Ultimatum
Confirming the incident, the traditional ruler of Akpachi, Chief Samuel Alachenu Udenyi, described the destruction as “barbaric and unacceptable,” issuing an ultimatum for the herders to vacate the community immediately.
“We are aware that they have armed militia in the bush. We know they are there, but because of that, we will not run away from this community. It is better to stay and defend our land than to be called cowards tomorrow,” Chief Udenyi said.
Speaking during an on-the-spot assessment of the damaged farmlands, the monarch disclosed that more than 152 hectares were affected by fire and grazing activities allegedly carried out by the herders.
According to him, preliminary findings showed that over 42 hectares of rice farms were razed, including harvested rice still under chaff. In addition, 54 hectares of cassava farms were destroyed, while about two hectares each of cashew and banana plantations were also burnt.
“So far, these are the damages recorded on just one farm. If you move around to other farms, you will not believe the scale of destruction,” he added.
Kidnapping, Fear, and Food Crisis Loom
Chief Udenyi stressed that Akpachi community is not a designated grazing area and insisted that no land was allocated to the herders by the community.
“Our land is not a grazing field. We did not give land to anyone to stay here, yet they are grazing freely on our farms,” he said.
The traditional ruler further revealed that the security situation has worsened with the reported kidnapping of a community member from a farm, who remains missing.
“Up till now, we have not seen the person, and no explanation has come from the herders’ leadership,” he said.
He warned that the destruction of farmlands is already crippling food production, as women can no longer access their farms to harvest crops, with cassava, beans, and rice farms destroyed by fire and cattle trampling.
Residents Reject Compensation, Demand Evacuation
Addressing reports of compensation offers, Chief Udenyi rejected any form of monetary settlement, insisting that evacuation of the herders—not compensation—is the only acceptable solution.
“We don’t want compensation. Someone destroys a farm worth millions and offers ₦40,000. This is unacceptable,” he said.
He also confirmed ongoing discussions with neighbouring traditional rulers facing similar challenges, noting that Akpachi and Otukpo communities both deny allocating land to the herders.
The monarch called on security agencies to act decisively, stressing that the community is aware of the armed presence in nearby bushes and warning that any attack would have known origins.
The Bureau News reports that residents are urging the Benue State Government and federal security agencies to urgently intervene to prevent further destruction, displacement, and possible bloodshed.
The former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Chika Malami (SAN), has raised concerns over what he described as unlawful detention by the Department of State Services (DSS), alleging persistent denial of access to his legal team.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his associate, Bello Muhammed Doka, Malami was said to have been re-arrested by the DSS after meeting the bail conditions earlier granted to him by a court in connection with allegations bordering on interim asset forfeiture.
Doka described the development as troubling, insisting that the continued detention of the former minister without unhindered access to his lawyers violates constitutional provisions and due process.
“It is deeply worrisome and a clear abuse of his constitutional rights that his arrest appears to have preceded proper investigations, which negates established constitutional safeguards,” Doka said.
According to the statement, Malami has been in DSS custody for more than five days without being allowed to properly consult with his legal team or retrieve his international passport, which formed part of the bail conditions earlier granted by the court.
“We have raised the alarm over his detention by the DSS for over five days without granting him unhindered access to his legal team and without releasing his international passport, which is part of the bail conditions,” Doka stated.
Doka further alleged that the DSS adopted tactics similar to those previously employed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which he claimed delayed Malami’s access to bail and justice.
“The continued detention without access to his legal team, which was only granted briefly on Friday, suggests a pattern aimed at denying him speedy justice, despite bail having been granted by a competent court,” he said.
He urged the DSS to discontinue actions that restrict Malami’s constitutional right to prepare his defence and to release all necessary documents required for his legal representation.
“We believe the DSS is a responsible institution that upholds the rule of law and the principles of fair administration of justice, and we expect those standards to be applied in Malami’s case,” Doka added.
The statement warned that continued obstruction of access to legal counsel amounts to an infringement of fundamental human rights, including the right to a fair hearing as guaranteed under the Constitution.

The 2026 Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival is attracting growing international attention as foreign investors from Europe and Asia signal strong interest in Kebbi State, The Bureau News reports.
In preparation for the anticipated influx, the Kebbi Investment Promotion Agency (KIPA) has commenced engagements with hotel owners and key players in the hospitality industry to upgrade facilities ahead of the festival.
Director-General of the Agency, Dr. Muhammad Kabir Kamba, disclosed this while outlining the agency’s readiness to maximise the economic benefits of the festival for the state.
“Foreign investors from Europe and Asia have formally expressed interest in attending the 2026 Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival,” Dr. Kamba said.
According to him, the investors’ interest followed Governor Nasir Idris’ recent international engagements, during which he invited potential partners to Kebbi State to verify its vast natural resources and explore investment opportunities.
Dr. Kamba revealed that the Governor has directed the agency to liaise with relevant stakeholders to ensure a befitting reception for both local and foreign investors.
He said the agency, in collaboration with the festival’s organising committee, will convene meetings with hotel owners and other critical stakeholders to address the renovation of dilapidated facilities and the upgrade of existing structures to acceptable international standards.
The Director-General further explained that arrangements are in place to showcase the state’s agricultural produce, livestock, and solid mineral resources to visiting investors.
He added that a consultative investment forum involving foreign investors, relevant government institutions, and indigenous business communities would be organised to explore modalities for profitable partnerships.
Dr. Kamba clarified that the investors are primarily visiting to assess the quality, quantity, and commercial viability of Kebbi State’s abundant raw materials.
The Argungu Fishing Festival, which was suspended for several years, has been revived under Governor Nasir Idris and is expected to be the most impactful edition yet, following the introduction of new economic empowerment initiatives.
The Governor has also demonstrated commitment to improving the state’s investment climate by assenting to a law authorising the issuance of Certificates of Occupancy for residential, commercial, and industrial plots.

The Commander, Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), Major General Peter Malla, gave the assurance while speaking at the 2025 West African Social Activities (WASA), jointly organised by TRADOC and the 31 Artillery Brigade at the Minna Military Cantonment parade ground.
“Officers and men of TRADOC and the 31 Artillery Brigade will continue to carry out their operations with a high sense of professionalism while upholding human rights and securing lives and property,” Major General Malla said.
The annual WASA event brought together officers, soldiers, and their families in a colourful celebration marking the end of the 2025 training and operational year.
The 31 Artillery Brigade Parade Ground came alive with cultural displays, traditional music, and activities reflecting unity and camaraderie within the military community.
WASA, a long-standing tradition of the Nigerian Army, serves as a platform for relaxation, bonding, and cultural integration after months of intensive training and security operations.

Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has spoken from hiding after security operatives reportedly raided his residence following the country’s disputed presidential election.
According to Wine, he managed to evade arrest during the operation, but confirmed that his wife and other family members remain under house arrest.
Earlier, his political party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), alleged that the opposition leader was forcibly taken away from his home in an army helicopter. The Ugandan military dismissed the claim, describing it as “baseless and unfounded.”
Wine later posted on X, formerly Twitter, stating that he was in hiding for his safety as security forces continued to search for him.
“I am trying to keep safe, as these criminals are looking for me everywhere.”
The opposition figure has repeatedly rejected the outcome of the election, alleging widespread irregularities and voter suppression. The polls were conducted under an internet blackout and a heavy security presence across the country.
Official results released by Uganda’s electoral authorities declared President Yoweri Museveni winner with 71.65 per cent of the votes, while Bobi Wine secured 24.72 per cent.

Breaking News: Gov. Ododo Orders Demolition of Criminal Hideout in Okene, Invalidates Illegally Acquired Properties

The Executive Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, on Thursday ordered the demolition of a notorious structure popularly known as Sambel Joint in Idoji, Okene Local Government Area, following credible intelligence reports linking the facility to criminal activities.
The operation has now commenced with the demolition of a suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) hideout in Sambel, Idoji, Okene Local Government Area.
The demolition exercise came hours after the Kogi State Government issued a press statement invalidating all fraudulently and illegally acquired properties across the state, declaring such properties null, void, and of no legal effect.
The government warned that any property found to have been illegally acquired or used for criminal purposes would be reclaimed, while individuals involved would be prosecuted in line with existing laws.
In line with the directive, properties located at GP. 23A, 23B, 24A and 24B (Government Quarters, Idoji, Okene), with Certificate of Occupancy number KG. 13958, were formally invalidated and demolished after investigations confirmed that they were illegally acquired and being used as hideouts for criminal elements.
Government sources disclosed that the properties violated provisions of the Kogi State Land Administration Law and the Anti-Kidnapping Law, having been unlawfully occupied and converted into operational bases for criminal activities.
The decisive action followed sustained surveillance and intelligence gathering, which revealed that the location had become a haven for criminal elements, posing serious security threats to residents and commuters within the area.
Speaking during the demolition exercise, Governor Ododo reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to security, stressing that the protection of lives and livelihoods remains his foremost responsibility.
“We are here to carry out an action that is in the best interest of our people. What I have sworn in to do is to protect the lives and livelihoods of my people, and as such, I will always work to secure my people,” the Governor declared.
The Governor recalled that in a proclamation issued in December, his administration had clearly warned that any property found to be harbouring criminals would be demolished, while occupants and collaborators would be prosecuted.
“This is not new. We already made it clear that any house being used to harbour criminals will go down. These are proactive measures to curb criminality in Kogi State,” he said.
Governor Ododo expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his continued support in strengthening security across the state.
“I sincerely appreciate my leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the support he is giving us and for the service he is rendering to ensure that our state is secured from criminal activities that some of our people unfortunately encourage,” he said.
According to the Governor, investigations revealed that the demolished properties belonged to the government but were illegally taken over and converted into criminal operational bases.
“This demolition you are seeing here today is to give our people the needed security they deserve. We discovered that criminals have taken over this property, and when we realized that their activities were giving our people unrest, we had to take a bold decision,” Ododo explained.
The Governor issued a stern warning to criminals and their collaborators, vowing that his administration would show no tolerance for crime in any part of the state.
“I will never negotiate with any criminal. We will take the fight to them anywhere they are. If you harbour criminals, your house will go down. If you keep criminals, your house will go down,” the Governor warned.
Governor Ododo emphasized that the operation was aimed at restoring peace and ensuring residents can live without fear.
“We are here to carry out this exercise so that our people can sleep with both of their eyes closed,” he added.
Security sources disclosed that the location had been under close monitoring following repeated complaints from residents about suspicious movements, influx of unknown persons, and activities capable of breaching public peace.
Residents of Idoji community commended the Governor’s swift intervention, describing the demolition as a bold and timely action that will enhance security and restore confidence in Okene and its environs.
A resident, Mallam Raji Sanni, told journalists that the structure had been harbouring criminals terrorising the area, commending the Governor for liberating the community from the nefarious activities of the hoodlums who occupied the demolished facility.
Governor Ododo reiterated that Kogi State will not serve as a safe haven for criminals, stressing that peace and security remain central to the development agenda of his administration.
The Kebbi State Government has rejected claims by the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) alleging the diversion of a ₦10 billion intervention fund meant for intending pilgrims for the 2026 Hajj, describing the allegations as misleading and lacking full context.
The government clarified that the funds were not a grant or sponsorship but a temporary and fully recoverable financial intervention designed to protect Kebbi pilgrims from losing their Hajj slots.
Speaking at a press conference in Birnin Kebbi, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed, explained that the amount was advanced through the Kebbi State Pilgrims Welfare Agency as a short-term loan.
“The ₦10 billion intervention was not a sponsorship or a grant. It was a short-term loan advanced to enable intending pilgrims meet the deadline set by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON),” Ahmed said.
He disclosed that NAHCON had fixed December 5, 2025 as the nationwide deadline for full payment, but as of that date, only about 2,000 pilgrims from Kebbi State had completed their payments.
According to him, approximately 1,300 intending pilgrims were at risk of losing their Hajj slots due to incomplete payments, prompting the state government to intervene.
“To prevent our pilgrims from losing their slots, the state government approved a temporary financial intervention on the clear understanding that the money would be fully repaid within two weeks once the affected pilgrims completed their payments,” he explained.
The Commissioner further stated that the loan was fully repaid within days.
“By December 16, 2025, just eleven days after the intervention, the entire ₦10 billion had been repaid in full and returned to government coffers. There was no loss of public funds whatsoever,” Ahmed said.
He added that bank statements and agency records are available for public verification to confirm both the disbursement date and the repayment date.
Ahmed noted that the intervention was informed by the socioeconomic realities of the affected pilgrims, many of whom are farmers and traders awaiting proceeds from late November and early December harvests and commercial activities.
“The temporary challenge faced by the pilgrims was a matter of timing, not inability to pay,” he stated.
As a result of the intervention, the Commissioner revealed that Kebbi State now has 3,629 fully paid pilgrims for the 2026 Hajj, placing the state second nationally.
“Kebbi State is now ranked second in the country and has been included among the first batch of states to be airlifted at the commencement of Hajj operations,” Ahmed said.
The state government also dismissed claims that the intervention came at the expense of critical sectors such as health and infrastructure.
According to the Commissioner, several hospitals, including tertiary health facilities, have been constructed, rehabilitated, or are currently undergoing rehabilitation, alongside numerous primary healthcare centres across the state.
While acknowledging the role of civil society organisations in promoting accountability, the Kebbi State Government urged MURIC to verify facts before making public statements.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, responsible governance, and the welfare of the people of Kebbi State.
Owo Church Attack Trial: Witnesses Give Graphic Accounts as DSS Tenders Fresh Evidence
Two additional prosecution witnesses on Tuesday gave emotional and detailed testimonies before the Federal High Court in Abuja on the June 5, 2022 terrorist attack on St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State.
The witnesses testified as the Department of State Services (DSS) continued its prosecution of five suspects over the deadly assault that occurred during a Sunday Mass celebrating the Feast of Pentecost.
The DSS is prosecuting Idris Omeiza (25), Al Qasim Idris (20), Jamiu Abdulmalik (26), Abdulhaleem Idris (25), and Momoh Otuho Abubakar (47) on an amended nine-count charge bordering on terrorism. All the defendants have pleaded not guilty.
The June 2022 attack, one of Nigeria’s deadliest assaults on a place of worship, claimed at least 41 lives and left over 100 worshippers injured after gunmen stormed the church, locked the main entrance, opened fire, and detonated explosives.
Eyewitness Describes How Attackers Entered Church
A male witness, identified in court as SSB, recounted how the attackers gained entry after worshippers attempted to secure the main door.
“In a matter of seconds, I saw one man holding a gun. He looked at the church, then beckoned to someone behind him,” the witness told the court.
During cross-examination by DSS counsel, Adedayo Adedipe (SAN), SSB initially identified the fifth defendant, Momoh Otuho Abubakar, but later corrected himself after the second defendant, Al Qasim Idris, removed his face mask and stepped forward.
The witness also identified Abdulhaleem Idris as the fourth defendant, describing him as the man carrying a bag while the attackers were preparing to leave the scene.
“I heard several explosions while they were shooting at people. I fell on my face in fear. After the attackers left, I saw two dead bodies outside the church. More than 40 worshippers were killed, while many others were injured,” SSB said.
Female Survivor Recounts Injury and Loss of Child
A second witness, a female identified as SSC, told the court that she survived the attack but sustained permanent injuries to her left leg.
“One of the gunmen dropped dynamite near me and asked, ‘Do you know why we are doing this?’” she testified.
She further narrated the devastating loss of her two-year-old cousin, whose body she encountered after the explosion.
“At the hospital, the child’s mother could not recognize her because of the injuries and the dust from the explosion,” SSC said.
The witness displayed her injured leg in open court, explaining that it had undergone four surgeries and still contained metal implants.
DSS Submits Statements as Exhibits
Both witnesses confirmed that they made extra-judicial statements to the DSS at its Akure office on May 26, 2024.
The statements were formally admitted into evidence as Exhibits B and C without objection from the defence.
Speaking after the session, DSS counsel, Adedayo Adedipe (SAN), informed the court that the prosecution plans to call seven additional witnesses.
“We intend to present seven more witnesses. Two of them will testify at the next sitting to further clarify the planning, execution, and aftermath of the attack,” Adedipe said.
Presiding judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, adjourned the matter to January 14, 2026, for continuation of trial.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arraigned Abdulmalik Abdulazeez Obadaki, the suspected mastermind of the 2012 deadly gun attack on the Deeper Life Bible Church, Otite, near Okene in Kogi State.
The brutal attack, carried out on August 7, 2012, left more than 19 worshippers dead and several others injured after armed men stormed the church during a Bible study session and opened fire with AK-47 rifles. The incident was widely believed to have been coordinated by the Ansaru terrorist group.

Gunmen Abduct Over 20 Worshippers During Church Attack in Kogi Community

No fewer than 20 worshippers were reportedly abducted on Sunday, December 14, 2025, after armed men attacked the First ECWA Church in Ayetoro Kiri, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Local sources said the attackers stormed the church premises while a worship session was ongoing, firing sporadically to instill fear and force congregants to flee.
Witnesses disclosed that while many worshippers escaped amid the chaos, several others were seized by the assailants, who later escaped through nearby bush paths.
The attack threw the otherwise peaceful community into panic, with residents describing scenes of confusion and distress as the gunmen carried out the operation.
The incident has further heightened concerns over deteriorating security in parts of Kogi State, particularly in rural communities and places of worship that have increasingly become targets of violent attacks.
Earlier reports by SaharaReporters indicated that one person, identified simply as JayJay, was killed during the attack, while several worshippers were abducted.
This latest assault marks the second reported attack on a church in Okun land within weeks, raising alarm among residents and worshippers across the region.
On November 30, 2025, armed men reportedly invaded a Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ejiba, Yagba West Local Government Area, abducting a cleric identified as Orlando alongside about 13 worshippers during a service.
The attackers in that incident were said to have initially demanded a ransom of ₦500 million, later reduced to ₦200 million, issuing a two-day ultimatum to the victims’ families and threatening unspecified consequences.
Residents also recalled that Ayetoro Kiri community was attacked about three weeks earlier when armed men targeted a local school. On that occasion, the community vigilante group reportedly repelled the attackers, preventing casualties and abductions.
Security authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the latest church attack as of the time of filing this report.
Private Jet Crash-Lands at Kano Airport, All Passengers Escape Unhurt

A private jet operated by Flybird on Sunday crash-landed at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), Kano State.
The aircraft, which was en route from Abuja to Kano, reportedly encountered difficulties while landing and crash-landed at about 9:30 a.m.
According to eyewitness accounts, there were 11 persons on board the aircraft, including three crew members. All passengers and crew were safely evacuated without any reported injuries.
An eyewitness told journalists that emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene and ensured the safe evacuation of everyone on board.
As of the time of filing this report, airport authorities and aviation officials were yet to issue an official statement detailing the cause of the incident or the extent of damage to the aircraft.

[i]Northern Youths Merger Group Faults Kwankwaso’s Criticism of Tinubu on Security
The Northern Youths Merger Group (NYMG), a pro–All Progressives Congress (APC) coalition, has distanced itself from recent comments by former Kano State Governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, criticizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s handling of Nigeria’s security challenges.
In a statement issued in Kano and signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Hon. Musa Mujahid Zaitawa, the group described Kwankwaso’s remarks as “baseless” and “unhelpful,” accusing him of what it termed a pattern of opposing successive governments without offering constructive alternatives.
According to the statement, the group questioned the credibility of the former governor’s position, noting that Kwankwaso has previously served as Minister of Defence, Governor, and Senator, and should therefore understand the complexities involved in managing national security.
“The President is actively engaging security agencies and implementing reforms aimed at restoring peace across the country. Statements that undermine these efforts do not contribute to national stability,” Zaitawa said.
The group further alleged that Kwankwaso has consistently criticized administrations in the past, citing his opposition to the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan and his current stance against the APC-led federal government.
NYMG also claimed that support for the Kwankwasiyya movement has waned, pointing to the exit of some of Kwankwaso’s former allies, including serving lawmakers and other political figures.
In a stronger allegation, the group accused Kwankwaso of attempting to politicize the security situation in Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections. It alleged that he was seeking to implicate former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin in order to portray the Tinubu administration as ineffective on security matters.
The group warned against statements that could inflame tensions or incite unrest among young people, urging political leaders to exercise restraint and responsibility in their public engagements.
NYMG, however, commended President Tinubu for steps taken so far to address insecurity, including recent changes in the nation’s defence leadership and initiatives aimed at supporting farmers and improving livelihoods across northern Nigeria.
The group concluded by calling on political actors to prioritize national unity and collective security over partisan interests, stressing that the fight against insecurity requires cooperation from all stakeholders.
Former AGF Abubakar Malami Denies Alleged Link to Abacha Loot, Rejects Claims of 46 Bank Accounts

Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Chika Malami (SAN), has denied allegations linking him to the Abacha loot and claims that he operated 46 illegal bank accounts.
The denial followed reports attributing the allegations to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Speaking through his media aide, Alhaji Bello Doka, Malami described the claims as “false, baseless, and misleading.”
Doka stated that the former minister has no connection whatsoever to the Abacha loot or any form of financial misconduct. He maintained that Malami operates only six personal bank accounts, all of which, he said, are fully known to the EFCC.
“The EFCC is aware of the six bank accounts that belong to him. The allegation that he operates forty-six unlawful bank accounts is ridiculous and without foundation,” Doka said.
According to him, Malami was never officially confronted with the claim of 46 bank accounts during any invitation or engagement with the anti-graft agency. He added that no documentary evidence was presented to substantiate the allegation.
Doka challenged the EFCC to publicly disclose details of at least 23 of the alleged accounts—representing 50 per cent of the claim—if such accounts truly exist.
“For transparency and fairness, the commission should either publish verifiable details of these accounts or formally withdraw the allegation. Media statements alone are not sufficient proof,” he said.
The media aide emphasized that Malami, as a senior legal practitioner and former chief law officer of the federation, remains a law-abiding citizen who is willing to cooperate with any lawful investigation.
He further thanked supporters of the former minister for their solidarity, noting that Malami remains focused and undistracted despite what he described as an unfolding media controversy.

Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have intensified security operations ahead of the festive season, successfully dismantling a criminal gang notorious for ambushing travellers in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.
The joint mission, carried out on 11 December 2025, involved OPWS operatives, the Nigeria Police Zaki-Biam Division, and the Benue State Community Protection Guard. Acting on credible intelligence, troops moved swiftly to confront criminals who had mounted an illegal roadblock along the Aturuku–Wembe–Ayati axis, an area that has recorded multiple attacks on unsuspecting commuters.
Military sources confirmed that the armed group opened fire upon contact but were overpowered in a decisive engagement. Three members of the syndicate were neutralised, while others escaped with gunshot wounds into nearby bushes. Two motorcycles used by the criminals were recovered at the scene.
Local community members later identified the deceased as individuals linked to recurring kidnapping incidents around the Zaki-Biam yam market and other parts of Ukum LGA. Early intelligence also connects the group to a bandit kingpin operating within the Shitile axis of Katsina-Ala.

Troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS), in a coordinated effort with the Nigeria Police Force, Zaki-Biam Division, and the Benue State Community Protection Guard, executed a well-planned operation on 11 December 2025 after receiving reliable intelligence. The security team moved swiftly to confront a criminal group that had erected an illegal roadblock along the route connecting Aturuku, Wembe and Ayati villages in Borkyo Council Ward, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.
According to intelligence assessments, the armed gang had been ambushing and dispossessing innocent travellers who unknowingly approached the blocked junction. On making contact with the criminals, the troops engaged them decisively, resulting in the neutralisation of three criminals, while others fled into nearby bushes. In the course of the operation, two motorcycles used by the criminals were recovered, and a heightened search effort is currently under way to locate and apprehend those who fled.
Subsequent findings revealed that the three neutralised individuals belonged to a notorious syndicate responsible for widespread insecurity, including repeated kidnappings across Ukum LGA. Their activities are believed to be connected to recent abduction cases reported around the Zaki-Biam yam market vicinity.
Community members later identified the deceased suspects as Sughter Abelebe and Sughnen Abelebe, both from Ugbaam Council Ward, and a third individual from Tse Kpeakaa, Kundav Council Ward.
