According to The Bureau Newspaper, The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at Tincan Island Port, Lagos, has reported an impressive revenue haul of over ₦747 billion for the first half of 2025, representing a 29.85% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

This development was revealed in a press release issued on Thursday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Oscar Ivara.

According to the statement, the Port Command, under the leadership of Comptroller Frank Onyeka, generated ₦747,079,233,259.91, amounting to 98.03% of its projected revenue for the period. In comparison, the command collected ₦575.3 billion in the first half of 2024 — marking a revenue growth of over ₦171 billion.

Breakdown of Revenue Collections

January 2025: ₦116.4 billion

February 2025: ₦103.3 billion

March 2025: ₦128.3 billion

April 2025: ₦145 billion

May 2025: ₦128.4 billion

June 2025: ₦125.6 billion

These figures surpassed the command’s monthly revenue target of ₦127 billion and outperformed the same months in 2024.

Progress on New B’odogwu Clearance Platform

Comptroller Onyeka also disclosed progress on the B’Odogwu electronic clearance system, with 3,450 Single Goods Declarations (SGDs) received and 2,749 successfully processed and exited.

He said the command had intensified stakeholder training sessions — both online and in-person — to streamline the new process and ensure compliance.

Vessel Traffic and Cargo Composition

In Q1 2025 alone, 282 vessels berthed at the port. Import tonnage included bulk wheat, malt, chemicals, drilling rods, sugar, aluminum nitride, and general cargo, further strengthening Tincan’s position as a major maritime hub.

Anti-Smuggling Success: Seizure of Illicit Drugs and Arms

The Customs Command made significant strides in anti-smuggling operations, confiscating illicit drugs worth over ₦8 billion, which were handed over to the NDLEA. These included:

128 packets of Cannabis Indica

97 packets of crystal methamphetamine

1,735 packets of Cannabis Indica

Total weight: Over 1,000kg

In a separate operation, a 40-foot container concealing arms and military gear was intercepted. Recovered items included:

Ruger P345 Pistol

GEN 4 Austria Pistol

100 live rounds of 9mm ammunition

34 blank rounds

5 empty magazines

2 handcuffs

1 tactical flashlight

These were handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) along with the consignee and declarant.

Stakeholder Engagement and Transparency

Comptroller Onyeka emphasized ongoing engagement with terminal operators, licensed agents, civil society groups, and private sector players. The command has also hosted open forums and regular press briefings to ensure transparency.

He urged importers to always declare their consignments accurately to foster faster clearance and improve trade facilitation.

The Area Controller praised the Comptroller-General of Customs and newly elected WCO Council Chairman, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, describing his leadership as a “divine victory” for Nigeria.

In a major development affecting international travel, the United States has drastically reduced the validity and entry privileges of most non-immigrant visas issued to Nigerian citizens, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria announced on Tuesday, The Bureau Newspaper reports.

Under the new directive, most affected visa categories will now be limited to a single entry and a three-month validity period, a significant shift from previous arrangements that offered multiple entries and longer durations.

The policy takes immediate effect from July 8, 2025, but the U.S. Embassy clarified that visas issued prior to the effective date will retain their original validity and entry terms.

Why the Change?

The U.S. Embassy said the move is part of a global visa reciprocity review, a policy framework aimed at ensuring U.S. citizens are granted similar visa treatment in other countries.

“The U.S. Mission is working with the Government of Nigeria to ensure that Nigeria can meet the criteria,” the statement read.

According to the embassy, Nigeria must meet certain benchmarks to restore or improve its visa reciprocity status. These include:

Issuance of secure travel documents with verifiable biometric identity features

Implementation of systems to track visa overstays

Improved information-sharing on security and criminal records with U.S. authorities

Ongoing Evaluation

The U.S. noted that visa policy for Nigeria will be subject to regular review, and adjustments could be made depending on Nigeria’s progress in fulfilling the required conditions.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the passing of Mrs. Zainab Joy Momodu, Nigeria’s Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at the Nigerian Embassy in Guinea-Bissau, The Bureau Newspaper reports.

Mrs. Momodu died on Monday, July 7, 2025, at the Military Hospital in Bissau following a brief illness, according to a statement issued by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Mr. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.

Described as a dedicated and accomplished career officer, Mrs. Momodu joined the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2010 as part of the 20th Regular Course of the Foreign Service Academy. Over the years, she earned a strong reputation for her professionalism, diplomatic tact, and unyielding commitment to Nigeria’s global representation.

“Her passing is a profound loss not just to the Ministry, but to the entire diplomatic community,” the Ministry stated. “She served the nation with distinction, and her absence will be deeply felt.”

At the time of her death, Mrs. Momodu was serving as Acting Head of Mission in Guinea-Bissau, where she played a pivotal role in strengthening bilateral ties between Nigeria and the West African country.

A retired director in Kebbi State, Alhaji Musa Altine Aljannare, who was abducted last week, has been released after a N15 million ransom was paid to his captors.

The incident occurred in Aljannare village, located in Suru Local Government Area of the state. Armed men stormed his residence in the middle of the night and forced him to follow them at gunpoint to an undisclosed location.

Narrating his ordeal to The Bureau Newspaper, Alhaji Aljannare recounted that he was taken through the bush on foot and held in harsh conditions for several days. He was eventually freed following intense negotiations between his family and the abductors, which led to the agreed ransom payment.

Despite the traumatic experience, the retired civil servant was said to be in stable condition upon his return and was promptly taken to a hospital for medical examination and treatment.

The abduction is one of several such incidents recently reported across Kebbi State, as criminal gangs continue to target individuals for ransom. Security agencies have been urged to intensify operations to curb the rising wave of kidnappings.

At least over one hundred houses were destroyed in Zogirma village in Bunza local government area of Kebbi State following a heavy down fall that lasted for hours on Friday night.

A resident of Bunza, Haruna Danmalam who disclosed this incident to The Bureau Newspaper, also revealed that many people in the village sustained serious degree of injuries as a result of the downfall.

Visiting the affected areas, Secretary of Bunza Local Government Area, Malam Muhammed Umar Mawo, sympathized with the affected residents on behalf of the Chairman of the local government area.

He assured the victims that, the local government council will compile a comprehensive report over the incident and submit to the state government for necessary action.

Similarly, four villages in Arewa local government area of the state were also submerged by flood.

The villages included Tungar Chindo, Tungar Kure, Feske Malabawa and Feske Rafi where over sixty houses and many animals and other properties worth hundreds of naira were destroyed by the flooding.

Umuahia, Abia State — The Federal Commissioner representing Abia State at the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RAMFAC), Mrs. Nkechi Oti, has raised serious concerns over the alleged ceding of Abia’s oil wells to neighbouring states, a development she says is negatively impacting the state's revenue allocation from the Federation Account.

According to The Bureau Newspaper, Mrs. Oti, while presenting a report of her familiarisation tour during a courtesy visit to Governor Alex Otti, revealed that the disputed oil wells—if reclaimed—could significantly boost Abia’s federally allocated revenue.

“There’s an urgent need for intervention by the Governor to reclaim Abia’s rightful oil assets,” she said.

Mrs. Oti noted that her visit was aimed at understanding the dynamics and challenges of revenue allocation to Abia State, and reaffirmed her commitment to securing enhanced revenue inflow for the state.

The RAMFAC Commissioner also called for:

- Improved monitoring of the state’s solid mineral resources

- Better inter-ministerial coordination

- Enhanced training for local government staff to boost Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)

She further warned that lapses in statutory remittances—such as stamp duties and tax collections—could continue to deprive Abia of its equitable share from the Federation Account, especially in the oil-producing areas.

She listed electricity deficits, insecurity, and poor infrastructure as some of the challenges impeding the state’s oil-producing regions from reaching their full potential.

Mrs. Oti, who was accompanied by an eight-member team from key federal agencies, commended the Otti-led administration for ongoing projects and the digitisation of revenue processes, describing them as transformative steps toward financial transparency.

In his response, Governor Alex Otti expressed gratitude for the RAMFAC team’s efforts and assured them that his administration will carefully study the report and act on its recommendations.

He disclosed that Abia State has established the Abia Petroleum Trading and Allied Limited (APTA), a company tasked with the management and recovery of oil wells in the state. The governor emphasised that Abia would engage with the Federal Government to protect its oil assets and ensure equity in resource distribution.

“Our administration is focused on prudent financial management, increased federal revenue, and long-term debt reduction,” Governor Otti stated.

He also appealed to the RAMFAC representative to assist Abia in securing increased federal allocations, in line with its resource contributions and developmental needs.

The fact-finding mission by RAMFAC uncovered key bottlenecks hindering optimal revenue generation for the state, setting the stage for policy reforms and strategic collaboration between the state and federal authorities.

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has outrightly rejected a new circular from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), warning that it violates existing agreements and threatens to destabilise the nation’s health system.

Addressing The Bureau Newspaper during a press briefing in Abuja, NMA President, Professor Bala Audu, criticised the circular — referenced SWC/S/04/S.218/III/646 and dated June 27, 2025 — describing it as misleading, inadequate, and capable of triggering industrial unrest.

“We reject this circular in its entirety. It violates previously signed agreements and aggravates existing tensions among dedicated medical professionals,” Audu said.

The circular proposes a revised structure for allowances of medical and dental officers in the Federal Public Service, but according to the NMA, it undermines years of collective bargaining and reneges on commitments from agreements reached in 2001, 2009, and 2014.

The Association has issued a 21-day ultimatum, threatening a nationwide withdrawal of services unless the Federal Government addresses its concerns urgently.

Demands by the NMA

Among its demands, the NMA is calling for:

1. Immediate withdrawal of the NSIWC circular.

2. Payment of all outstanding arrears, including 25/35 percent CONMESS entitlements, clinical duty, and accoutrement allowances.

3. Release and review of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund.

4. Issuance of circulars on clinical duty and honorary consultants’ allowances.

5. Implementation of specialist, scarce skills, and excess workload allowances.

6. Enforcement of the 2021 hazard allowance agreement.

7 Uniform adoption of CONMESS across all federal and state MDAs to curb brain drain.

Professor Audu stressed that the Association had made several good-faith efforts to engage relevant government agencies, but had been consistently ignored.

He urged President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, and the Nigerian public to take note of what he described as an “attempt to shortchange doctors and undermine healthcare delivery.”

Looming Health Crisis

The NMA warned that failure to meet its demands within the 21-day window would result in the withdrawal of medical services nationwide, a move that could cripple the country’s health sector.

“The Nigerian doctors are not unreasonable,” Audu said. “But our goodwill is not infinite. We cannot continue to operate in an environment of neglect and exploitation.”

The press conference concluded with a call on government stakeholders to act swiftly and honour prior agreements to prevent another major disruption in Nigeria’s fragile healthcare system.

Thailand’s Constitutional Court has suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra from office pending an ethics probe tied to a controversial phone conversation with Cambodia’s former leader, Hun Sen, The Bureau Newspaper reports.

The suspension, announced on Monday, follows the court’s acceptance of a petition filed by 36 senators who accused the prime minister of dishonesty and violating ethical standards laid out in Thailand’s constitution. The case revolves around a June 15 phone call between Paetongtarn and Hun Sen, reportedly aimed at diffusing mounting tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border.

“The court has received sufficient evidence to justify the temporary suspension of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra while the investigation proceeds,” the court’s statement read.

In the interim, Deputy Prime Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit has been appointed as the caretaker prime minister. Paetongtarn now has 15 days to respond to the allegations.

Despite her suspension, Paetongtarn remains in the cabinet following a recent reshuffle in which she was appointed Thailand’s new Minister of Culture.

Ganduje’s Resignation Is an Embarrassment to Kano People — NNPP Chairman Dungurawa

The Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State, Hashemi Dungurawa, has described the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a disgrace to the people of Kano.

Speaking to The Bureau Newspaper on Thursday, Dungurawa alleged that Ganduje was compelled to step down due to mounting allegations of corruption, particularly during the party’s internal leadership processes.

“This is not a voluntary resignation. Ganduje was forced out due to serious financial misconduct allegations that embarrassed the APC and the people of Kano,” Dungurawa said.

He argued that the resignation, which followed weeks of speculation and internal pressure within the ruling party, further exposed the lack of integrity and transparency in APC’s leadership ranks.

“Ganduje’s involvement in corrupt practices has been widely reported. His resignation is not only overdue but also an indictment on those who promoted his elevation in the first place,” he added.

Dungurawa insisted that the people of Kano deserve better representation on the national stage, not individuals whose reputations have been tainted by scandals.

“We are proud people, and what has happened is an embarrassment. This resignation should serve as a lesson to leaders who think they can escape accountability,” the NNPP leader said.

Remi Tinubu Donate 110 million to Families of 22 Kano Athletes Died

The Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commended the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Remi Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for donating ₦110 million to the families of 22 Kano athletes who tragically died in a road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

The late athletes, who had won medals for Kano at the competition, lost their lives in a devastating crash just five kilometers away from entering the ancient city of Kano.

A high-level delegation led by Hajiya Laila Barau Jibrin, wife of the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, delivered the First Lady's condolence message and the financial donation to the Kano State Government for onward distribution to the bereaved families.

"This is not the first time that Her Excellency, the First Lady Remi Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has extended her generous support to Kano State," said Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad and made available to The Bureau Newspaper.

The governor recalled previous donations by the First Lady, including ₦200,000 each to 250 elderly women and ₦50,000 each to 500 smallholder female farmers in the state.

“We appreciate this generous gesture, and we will constitute a high-powered committee to ensure transparent and effective distribution of the ₦110 million to the rightful families,” Governor Yusuf assured.

Hajiya Laila Barau Jibrin noted that the donation, presented in cheque form, was a direct instruction from the First Lady to alleviate the hardship of the grieving families. Each of the 22 families will receive ₦5 million.

The initiative, executed in partnership with a private sector firm and the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at transforming custodial centres into hubs of rehabilitation and productivity.

In what could become one of the biggest land scandals in Nigeria's capital, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has been accused of illegally allocating over 2,000 hectares of prime Abuja land to his son, Joaquin Wike, through questionable transactions that sidestep legal and ethical norms, The Bureau Newspaper gathered.

According to an ongoing investigation by Peoples Gazette, Wike allegedly bypassed proper procedures, sidestepped ground rent, and ignored title registration requirements to funnel highly valuable land parcels to his immediate family members. Internal sources from his ministry said the minister brazenly declared he was "just starting" and intends for his children to become the largest landowners in Abuja.

"When we told the minister in April that he needed to slow down on frequent allocations to his own children, he said he was just starting because his goal was to make them the largest landowners in Abuja," a senior aide, speaking anonymously, told the Gazette.

Documents reveal that these allocations began in October 2024, shortly after the incorporation of Joaq Farms and Estates Ltd, a company registered in Joaquin Wike's name. On October 17, 2024, just a week after incorporation, the company was granted 350 hectares via file number 155882 and certificate of occupancy number 0000162. By May 2025, the land allocations had grown to 2,082 hectares, with more allegedly in the pipeline.

Joaq Farms was given land in some of Abuja's most valuable districts including Maitama, Asokoro, Guzape, Bwari, Kwaita, and Gaduwa. Officials estimate these holdings could fetch a conservative $3.6 billion, based on recent property sales in the capital.

Despite these massive acquisitions, reports indicate that several Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) departments, including broadcasting and environmental protection, have gone months without pay, raising ethical and governance questions.

"This takes public graft to a new level, and consequences should be severe in a serious country," said anti-corruption advocate Patience Okonkwo, after reviewing documents shown to her by the Gazette.

Further controversy surrounds the alleged seizure of land originally allocated to the Austrian diplomatic mission, which was subsequently reallocated to Wike.

While there is no explicit clause in Nigerian law preventing the minister from allocating land to family members, constitutional experts argue that the scale, secrecy, and lack of due process amount to illicit self-dealing, a breach of the Fifth Schedule of the Nigerian Constitution.

Adding to the outrage, at least five plots out of the 2.3 hectares granted in Gaduwa District were previously held by a middle-class family. The family has remained silent, reportedly out of fear of retaliation.

"Let me be honest with you and tell you that Nyesom Wike is a serious liability to the Tinubu administration," a State House official said under condition of anonymity. "While we’re focused on tackling the economy and insecurity, he’s busy seizing lands from Abuja residents and reallocating them to himself."

The scandal casts a long shadow over President Bola Tinubu’s administration, with insiders saying the president is aware but hesitant to act due to the potential political fallout.

Under Nigerian law, the president is the ultimate custodian of land in the capital. The minister serves as an administrator on behalf of the president. Critics argue that Tinubu's silence could be interpreted as complicity or weakness.

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and current PDP stalwart serving in the APC-led federal cabinet, has been a polarising figure. His dual allegiance and reported role in sabotaging the PDP during the 2023 elections have drawn criticism from across the political spectrum.

Lere Olayinka, a spokesperson for Wike, declined to comment, saying, "I am not aware of any development as such and can’t give comments on what I don’t have knowledge of."

 Dangote Refinery Called a National Asset

Dr. Ogunyemi expressed confidence in the president’s vision and affirmed NEPZA’s willingness to collaborate closely with the committee to deliver on the reform agenda.

“Interestingly, the Authority supervised the construction of the highly celebrated Dangote Refinery from inception to commissioning, making it a success story for us,” Ogunyemi noted.

The committee’s coordinator, Ms. Maureen Ogbonna, described the initiative as a key intervention of the president to reposition the economy. “It is only a matter of time before we move fully away from billing domestic crude in dollars,” she said.

The Kebbi State Government is considering a legal amendment that would enforce the death penalty or life imprisonment for anyone convicted of serving as an informant to bandits operating within the state.

Governor Comrade Nasiru Idris made the disclosure on Tuesday while paying condolence visits to Tadurga village in Zuru and Kyebu in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Areas, following recent attacks that claimed at least 30 lives and led to cattle rustling.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Western Marine Command has announced the interception and seizure of contraband goods valued at over N352 million, reinforcing efforts to combat illicit trade across Nigeria’s waterways.

This was made known during a press briefing on Tuesday by the Command's Area Controller, Comptroller PN Ntadi, at the Command’s headquarters in Lagos.

Comptroller Ntadi, while conducting journalists around the command premises, also disclosed the demolition of structures considered a security threat within the vicinity. He noted that the surroundings had become a hotspot for criminal activities due to unauthorized business operations under nearby bridges.

“Our environment had been infiltrated by hoodlums who used it as a cover for illicit dealings. It became imperative to reclaim and restructure the area for enhanced security,” he said.

The Customs boss emphasized the need for renewed vigilance at the borders, stating that the seizures come at a time when Nigeria faces grave national security challenges.

“It is no longer acceptable to treat security lapses with levity, especially as the country confronts multiple threats. These seizures represent a collective step toward safeguarding our economic interests and national security,” he added.

Details of the Seizure

The seizures, carried out through coordinated operations along maritime routes, include the following:

1. 2,017 bags of foreign parboiled rice — Duty Paid Value (DPV): N212,995,200

The eco-friendly vessel, owned by Pacific International Lines (PIL), signals a bold leap forward for sustainable shipping in Nigeria. Its arrival not only reinforces OMT’s commitment to green port operations but also elevates its position as a pivotal hub for containerized trade in the region.

At 260 meters in length and a Gross Registered Tonnage of 78,501, the Kota Oasis has a carrying capacity of 8,350 TEUs. It is equipped with dual-fuel technology capable of operating on both LNG and diesel, along with cutting-edge exhaust gas recycling systems to cut down methane emissions and optimize fuel efficiency.

Mr. Nicolo Scannavini, Managing Director of OMT, described the vessel’s berthing as a transformative moment:

GAVI, UNICEF Target 1.5M Nigerians For Vaccines Against Cancer, Malaria, Others

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in collaboration with GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, has launched a robust immunisation campaign in Kebbi State, targeting over 1.5 million children for vaccination against deadly childhood diseases.

Dr. Sheik Humuyin Kabir, Health Manager for UNICEF Nigeria (Abuja Office), revealed the initiative during a courtesy visit to the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Muhammad Mera, in Argungu Local Government Area on Tuesday.

He explained that the campaign will span four years, and aims to vaccinate children against diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, measles, cholera, malaria, and cervical cancer.

Also speaking, the Head of GAVI's delegation to Nigeria, Dr. Jesica Crawford, emphasized their focus on malaria vaccination. “We are here for a massive malaria vaccination drive. Our goal is to ensure no child is left behind, especially in hard-to-reach areas,” she said.

In response, Emir Samaila Muhammad Mera expressed concern over the community’s declining vaccine uptake, especially for malaria. “People keep asking, ‘Why always polio vaccines and not malaria?’ The vaccines are available, yet many parents still refuse them,” he lamented.

The Kebbi State Government, Zuru Local Government Council, and the Concerned Citizens of Tadurga have condemned what they describe as the politicisation of insecurity by the media team of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN.

The condemnation follows a press statement signed by Malami’s Special Assistant on Media, Mohammed Bello Doka, which claimed that over 200 people were killed in the recent banditry attack on Tadurga community in Zuru Local Government Area.

In a strongly worded response made available to The Bureau News, the Concerned Tadurga Citizens expressed gratitude for the condolence message conveyed through the statement but criticised the deliberate misinformation regarding the casualty figure.

“Reports from community leaders, security agencies, and humanitarian responders on ground confirm that 10 persons tragically lost their lives—not 200,” the group stated. “Such false reports are not only misleading but capable of inciting unnecessary panic and undermining ongoing peacebuilding efforts.”

The Kebbi State Government described the casualty exaggeration as a “cheap political stunt” and accused Malami’s media team of seeking to use a tragic incident to discredit the administration of Governor Nasir Idris.

“The attempt to weaponise insecurity for political gain is shameful. Rather than acknowledge the state’s rapid response and support for victims, these politicians prefer to fan the flames of division,” the statement read.

The government reiterated its commitment to restoring peace and supporting victims, highlighting that combined efforts between state security operatives and community leaders have already led to the destruction of several bandit hideouts and the neutralisation of criminal elements.

“We urge all well-meaning citizens of Kebbi to reject attempts to politicise security. Insecurity should concern us all, regardless of political leanings,” the group said.

Tinubu Moves To End Benue Killings, Orders Peace Committee And Ranch Project

During a town hall meeting held in Makurdi on Wednesday, Tinubu described the crisis as a long-standing wound that must be healed urgently. He ordered the inclusion of traditional leaders, including the Tor Tiv and Ochi Idoma, in the peace committee and tasked the state government with ensuring the committee’s effectiveness in facilitating reconciliation and security.

The president also instructed the Minister of Livestock, Idi Muktar, to immediately begin working with the Benue State Government on establishing a ranch, describing it as a sustainable step to resolve the lingering farmers-herders crisis in the region.

“For us in Nigeria, we must find a solution to the root of this conflict. We have enough land to cultivate and raise our children. If we learn how to share and accommodate, we can all prosper,” Tinubu said.

He emphasised that peace in Benue is critical to national food security, adding that continued violence would frustrate any efforts to achieve economic development and food sovereignty.

The Kremlin has dismissed the Group of Seven (G7) as insignificant and "rather useless," echoing former U.S. President Donald Trump's remarks that expelling Russia from the G8 in 2014 was a strategic mistake.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "We agree with President Trump: it was a big mistake then to exclude Russia from the G8 format."

Trump, during the G7 summit in Canada, had suggested that had Russia remained in the G8, the 2022 invasion of Ukraine might have been avoided. He claimed, "Putin speaks to me. He doesn’t speak to anybody else ... he’s not a happy person about it."

Russia was removed from the G8 following its annexation of Crimea in 2014, a move condemned by Western powers. Since then, the group has returned to being the G7, comprising the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

Peskov argued that the G7's relevance has diminished significantly in today's global landscape. "Given the declining share of the G7 countries in the global economy, given all the trends that are observed in the G7 countries and, of course, against the background of, for example, such formats as the G20, the G7 looks dull and rather useless," he stated.

By downplaying the G7’s global influence, Russia is clearly signalling that any resolutions or sanctions from the group concerning its actions in Ukraine will not be taken seriously in Moscow.

Trump's sympathetic comments toward Russia and President Vladimir Putin continue to raise eyebrows globally, especially in the context of ongoing hostilities in Ukraine. Terseer Ugbor, a Member of the House of Representatives representing Kwande/Ushongo Federal Constituency in Benue State, has described the persistent killings and land invasions in the state as acts of terrorism. Speaking on a live programme on Channels Television, Ugbor stated unequivocally that the crises are not politically motivated but are the result of years-long conflict driven by territorial and religious motives.

According to Ugbor, about 40 percent of Benue's arable farmland has been taken over by Fulani herdsmen, displacing the original owners and in many cases leading to their deaths. He said these actions are part of a wider agenda targeting Benue’s predominantly Christian population and its rich agricultural land.

"This is clearly a case of terrorism happening in Nigeria and it's because of Benue state's arable farmland, some of which have been taken over by the Fulani herdsmen for grazing," Ugbor said. "No political faction is behind these issues, it has been going on for years before any of us came into office."

The lawmaker expressed concern over the federal government’s slow response to the crisis and lamented the lack of protection for Benue residents who, according to him, are being systematically wiped out in rural communities.

“There’s a need for Nigerians to understand that Benue is being targeted — not just for its resources, but for its identity. It’s a 99 percent Christian state with some of the most fertile farmlands in the country,” Ugbor stated.

The security crisis in Benue has intensified calls from civil society and local leaders demanding the right for Benue indigenes to bear arms for self-defense. While some view this as a drastic measure, others argue it may be the only way to deter what they describe as “coordinated invasions.”

The ongoing situation in Benue has raised national concern over farmer-herder conflicts, food security, and religious tolerance. As Ugbor’s statements gain traction, eyes are now on the federal authorities to either act decisively or risk the further escalation of violence in the Middle Belt.
