Business › Nigeria Out Of Top 10 In Imf’s Africa Growth List by Editorialtimes(op): 7:02pm On Jun 07 |
By Enemona Samuel EnduranceSeveral African economies are expected to sustain strong growth momentum in 2026, with projections indicating expansion rates significantly above the global average.
Data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) shows that African economies are projected to grow between 5.9% and 9.2% in 2026, underscoring the continent’s continued position as one of the world’s fastest-growing regions.
The Bureau Journal reports that Nigeria, despite its status as Africa’s third-largest economy by GDP, is projected to grow by 4.1% in 2026, placing it outside the top 10 fastest-growing economies on the continent.
Top 10 Fastest-Growing African Economies in 2026
10. Democratic Republic of Congo (5.9%)
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is projected to grow by 5.9% in 2026, driven largely by copper and cobalt production. Its mining sector continues to position the country as a critical supplier of battery minerals for the global energy transition.
9. Djibouti (6.0%)
Djibouti’s economy is expected to expand by 6.0%, supported by logistics infrastructure, port services, and its strategic location along key global shipping routes.
8. Côte d’Ivoire (6.2%)
Côte d’Ivoire is projected to grow by 6.2%, backed by agriculture, manufacturing, construction, and its dominant cocoa export industry.
7. Niger (6.7%)
Niger is forecast to expand by 6.7%, supported by oil production and extractive sector investments despite ongoing political and security challenges.
6. Libya (6.7%)
Libya is projected to grow by 6.7%, following a strong rebound in oil production after an exceptional recovery in 2025.
5. Benin (7.0%)
Benin is expected to record 7.0% growth, driven by infrastructure development, agriculture expansion, and trade reforms.
4. Rwanda (7.2%)
Rwanda’s economy is projected to grow by 7.2%, supported by services, tourism, technology, and sustained investment inflows.
3. Uganda (7.5%)
Uganda is forecast to grow by 7.5%, boosted by oil sector development, agriculture, manufacturing, and infrastructure expansion.
2. Guinea (8.7%)
Guinea is projected to expand by 8.7%, largely driven by bauxite mining and its strategic role in global aluminium supply chains.
1. Ethiopia (9.2%)
Ethiopia tops the ranking with projected growth of 9.2%, supported by industrialisation, agriculture, services, and ongoing economic reforms.
Where Nigeria Stands
Nigeria is projected to grow by 4.1% in 2026, slightly above the 4.0% forecast for 2025, according to IMF estimates. However, this places Africa’s third-largest economy outside the continent’s top 10 fastest-growing economies.
Recent capital flow data shows improved investor sentiment. Nigeria recorded $10.37 billion in capital importation in Q1 2026, marking an 83.83% year-on-year increase, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
The inflows were largely driven by portfolio investments, particularly money market instruments and government securities, while foreign direct investment accounted for just 1.3% of total inflows.
Despite the surge in capital importation, analysts note that Nigeria’s growth remains constrained by structural challenges that limit the translation of financial inflows into productive economic expansion.
What This Means for Africa
The ranking highlights the dominance of East and West African economies, with Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, and Guinea leading growth momentum. Resource-rich economies such as Libya, Niger, and the DRC also feature strongly, underscoring the role of commodities in driving expansion.
For Nigeria, the IMF outlook signals modest improvement but also reflects a widening gap between financial market confidence and real-sector productivity.
Analysts say closing this gap will require deeper reforms, improved infrastructure, stronger industrial output, and sustained investment in productive sectors. Source: https://thebureaujournal.com/2026/06/07/africas-fastest-growing-economies-2026-imf-ranking/

Dr. Gana, a former commissioner and prominent member of the ADC, formally resigned his membership of the party and declared support for Dr. Gwamna ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
According to him, his decision was influenced by what he described as Dr. Gwamna’s competence, leadership capacity, commitment to good governance and vision for the development of Gombe State.

“Dr. Jamil Gwamna has all it takes to lead Gombe State and continue from where the current administration of Governor Inuwa Yahaya stopped. He is the right man for the job, which is why I decided to join the APC and work towards the actualisation of his vision,” he said.

Foreign Affairs › US Court Halts Trump Immigration Policies Affecting 39 Nations by Editorialtimes(op): 9:50pm On Jun 05 |
By Queen Madaki A federal judge in the United States has struck down a series of immigration policies introduced under the administration of President Donald Trump, ruling that the measures unlawfully prevented thousands of applicants from receiving decisions on asylum, work permits, permanent residency and citizenship applications.
Chief US District Judge John McConnell, sitting in Providence, Rhode Island, described the policies as unlawful and discriminatory, saying they unfairly targeted applicants from 39 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.
Judge Rules Delays Were Unlawful
According to the ruling, many applicants complied with all legal requirements established by Congress and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), yet their applications remained unresolved for extended periods.
Judge McConnell held that the delays were not linked to any misconduct by the applicants but were instead tied to their countries of origin.
The court further found that USCIS lacked the legal authority to implement the disputed measures and allowed nationality-based considerations to influence immigration decisions.
Advocacy Group Welcomes Court Decision
Reacting to the judgment, Democracy Forward President, Skye Perryman, whose organisation represented the plaintiffs, said the ruling reinforces the principle that lawful immigration pathways cannot be denied on the basis of nationality.
She noted that thousands of affected individuals had followed established procedures but were left in prolonged uncertainty because of the policies.
The Department of Homeland Security had not issued an official response at the time of filing this report.
Background To The Immigration Dispute
The disputed policies formed part of a broader immigration crackdown introduced during the Trump administration following a shooting incident involving two National Guard personnel in Washington, D.C.
Prosecutors had alleged that the attack was carried out by an Afghan immigrant, prompting tighter immigration measures that affected applicants from dozens of countries.
The Bureau Journal reports that the ruling could have far-reaching implications for thousands of immigration applicants whose cases were delayed under the policies.
Legal experts believe the decision may also shape future debates over immigration policy, executive powers and administrative authority in the United States. Source: https://thebureaujournal.com/2026/06/05/us-judge-blocks-trump-immigration-policies-39-countries/

Politics › State Police Framework Nears Completion — Presidency by Editorialtimes(op): 7:46pm On Jun 05*. Modified: 9:02pm On Jun 05 |
By Queen Madaki The Federal Government has announced significant progress toward the establishment of state police across Nigeria, with constitutional amendments expected in the coming months following extensive consultations among the Presidency, the National Assembly, and security agencies, The Bureau Journal reports.
The development was disclosed by the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, while briefing journalists after a high-level consultative meeting on state police held at the State House in Abuja.
Months of Deliberations Yield Progress
Gbajabiamila revealed that discussions on the proposed state police framework began several months ago following a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to him, the process has gained substantial momentum, bringing the country closer to implementing one of the administration’s key security reform proposals.
“We started deliberations in the last three or four months on how to go about the establishment of state police as directed by Mr President.
“Establishing a state police is not something that you do with the wave of the hand or snap of the finger. There is a lot involved in terms of constitution and legalities, and thank God now we have gained a lot of traction; hopefully the amendment will come shortly,” he said.
Focus Shifts to Constitutional Amendment
The Chief of Staff explained that discussions have now reached the stage of drafting and reviewing constitutional amendments required to create a legal foundation for state policing.
He noted that once the constitutional framework is in place, lawmakers will proceed with enabling legislation to define the operational structure, powers, and responsibilities of state police formations.
According to him, current consultations are largely focused on resolving legal and constitutional issues associated with decentralising policing in Nigeria.
National Consensus Emerging
Gbajabiamila said there appears to be growing national agreement on the need for state police as part of broader efforts to address the country's security challenges.
He maintained that the conversation has largely shifted from whether state police should exist to determining the most effective framework for implementation.
The Bureau Journal reports that calls for state police have intensified in recent years amid rising concerns over banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, communal clashes, and other security threats across various parts of the country.
Tinubu to Receive Full Report
The Chief of Staff disclosed that President Tinubu would be presented with a comprehensive report detailing the outcome of the consultations and recommendations from stakeholders.
He reiterated that the President has consistently advocated for state police as a critical component of efforts to strengthen Nigeria's security architecture.
“There is a national consensus on the establishment of state police. I don't think there is any debate on that.
“It is something that the President has wanted and has been talking about for some time since last year, and he will be given a full report on this meeting and the outcome of this meeting,” he added.
Push for Stronger Grassroots Security
The Federal Government believes a decentralised policing system will improve intelligence gathering, strengthen local security responses, and enhance the ability of state governments to address emerging threats within their jurisdictions.
Advocates of state police have long argued that a locally controlled policing structure would enable quicker responses to security incidents while improving collaboration between communities and law enforcement agencies.
President Tinubu has repeatedly maintained that state police could play a significant role in protecting lives and property while complementing the efforts of federal security institutions.
Key Stakeholders Attend Meeting
The consultative meeting attracted senior government officials and security leaders, including the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Jibrin Barau; the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu; the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi; and the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu.
Other participants included senior officials involved in ongoing discussions aimed at developing a workable and constitutionally compliant framework for the establishment of state police across Nigeria. Crime › NSCDC Clears Officer Over Alleged N2bn Fraud Report by Editorialtimes(op): 8:13pm On Jun 01 |
By Endurance Enemona SamuelThe Bureau Journal reports that the Commander of the Mining Marshals of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), John Onoja, has dismissed a police report alleging that one of his officers was linked to over N2 billion in suspicious bank transactions following the death of a Mining Marshal operative.
Onoja described the report as false and misleading, insisting that it was part of a coordinated attempt to discredit the Mining Marshals and their operations against illegal mining activities in Nigeria.
Bank Records “Contradict Allegation” — NSCDC Commander
Reacting to the viral publication claiming that three NSCDC officers were arrested and that over N2 billion was traced to a suspect’s account, Onoja said the figures were inaccurate and deliberately exaggerated.
He explained that the account in question showed legitimate transactions far below what was reported.
“The Zenith Bank account belonging to Jibrin Labaran showed a total debit of N760,457.25 and a total credit of N760,129.85 within the period under review, representing the officer’s salary and legitimate earnings,” he stated.
According to him, the narrative of massive financial impropriety was baseless and intended to undermine the credibility of ongoing enforcement operations in the mining sector.
Allegations of Interference in Operations
Onoja also accused officers attached to Team N of the Force Intelligence Department of the Nigeria Police Force of repeatedly interfering with Mining Marshals operations in Nasarawa State.
He alleged that enforcement activities targeting illegal mining sites had been consistently obstructed over the past year.
“For over a year, the team has consistently disrupted lawful Mining Marshals operations at the site,” he said.
He further alleged that some arrested suspects linked to illegal mining activities had been released or shielded from prosecution due to interference by the same police team.
Call for DSS Intervention
Following the death of Deputy Superintendent of Corps Agada Levi, Onoja said he requested that the investigation be transferred from the Nigeria Police Force to the Department of State Services (DSS) for an independent review.
He argued that only an impartial investigation could establish the true circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Hence, my letter to the Inspector-General of Police requesting that the matter be transferred to the DSS for impartial review and handling,” he said.
Claims of Foreign Involvement
The NSCDC commander further alleged that foreign nationals whose illegal mining operations were shut down in Nasarawa State were sponsoring attempts to discredit the Mining Marshals.
“The real actors behind these actions are foreign nationals who see the Mining Marshals as a common enemy because of our crackdown on illegal mining activities,” he alleged.
He maintained that the unit remains committed to its mandate of combating illegal mining and protecting Nigeria’s natural resources.
Onoja urged the public to remain calm while relevant authorities review the matter and investigate the allegations thoroughly. Source: https://thebureaujournal.com/2026/06/01/nscdc-mining-marshals-boss-dismisses-n2-billion-allegation/

The Army said the recovered items further confirmed the involvement of the suspects in kidnapping activities within the area.

Politics › Kogi Erupts In Protest Over Alleged Plot To Upturn Sen. Karimi’s Victory by Editorialtimes(op): 11:27am On May 25 |
Tension Rocks Kogi West as Residents Protest Alleged Plot Against Senator Karimi’s APC VictoryBy Queen Madaki LOKOJA, Nigeria — Tension is rising across the seven local government areas of Kogi West Senatorial District following protests over alleged attempts to overturn the victory of Senator Sunday Steve Karimi in the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary election, The Bureau Journal reports.
Residents and party supporters have accused unnamed political actors of circulating what they described as forged election results in a bid to discredit the officially declared outcome of the May 18 APC senatorial primary.
Alleged Forged Results Trigger Fresh Outrage
According to sources within the district, rumours of plans to replace Senator Karimi with one of the defeated aspirants have sparked widespread anger among APC supporters across Kogi West.
The controversy intensified after reports emerged that another set of election results, allegedly forged, had begun circulating within political circles in the state.
A resident of Egbe, Abdulganiyu Kolade, described the development as shocking and unacceptable.
“We just discovered another plot targeting our distinguished Senator Karimi. This time around, they have produced forged results, attempting to replace the authentic results from the zone,” he said.
Kolade further alleged that some of the politicians linked to the controversy had earlier withdrawn from the race and publicly declared support for Senator Karimi before the primary election.
Residents Threaten Protest to Police Command
Another resident, Samson Oladele from Iyara in Ijumu Local Government Area, said protesters were preparing to march to the Kogi State Police Command in Lokoja to demand a full investigation into the alleged forged results.
“We are not just protesting; we are marching to the Police Command in Lokoja to ask the Commissioner of Police to investigate these forged results,” Oladele stated.
He warned that residents would resist any attempt to alter the outcome of the primary election.
Karimi Officially Declared Winner
The APC senatorial primary election for Kogi West was held on May 18 across the seven local government areas of the district.
Official results released by the Returning Officer for the exercise, Haruna Isah, showed that Senator Sunday Karimi emerged winner with a commanding lead.
According to the declared figures:
Senator Sunday Karimi Steve — 51,665 votes Samuel Aro — 620 votes Smart Adeyemi — 571 votes Alhaji Abubakar Zakari Ola — 414 votes Elizabeth Adedoyin — 18 votes
The Returning Officer reportedly submitted the certified result to the APC Kogi West Senatorial District Primary Election Committee.
Stakeholders Demand APC Intervention
Political stakeholders and supporters of Senator Karimi are now calling on the national leadership of the APC and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and protect the integrity of the primary process.
Evangelist Ekundayo Ojo said any attempt to replace the officially declared result would undermine internal democracy within the party.
“This margin reflects the unequivocal will of delegates across all seven LGAs in Kogi West. Any attempt to introduce another result after the declaration is an affront to the party’s democratic process,” he said.
He further urged party leaders to sanction anyone found responsible for circulating alleged fake results.
Fresh Political Anxiety in Kogi West
The latest controversy has added to growing political tension within Kogi West, where concerns have repeatedly surfaced over alleged attempts to frustrate Senator Karimi’s second-term ambition.
Political observers say the dispute could deepen divisions within the APC in the district if not urgently addressed by party leaders. Source: The Bureau Journal

Agriculture › Nigeria Eyes Global Honey Market With New Apiculture Policy by Editorialtimes(op): 7:53pm On May 23 |
By Queen Madaki ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding Nigeria’s apiculture sector with plans to introduce a National Apiculture Policy aimed at increasing honey production, improving export earnings, creating jobs for youths and supporting environmental sustainability, The Bureau Journal reports.
The disclosure was made during the 2026 World Bee Day celebration organised by the Youth for Apiculture Initiative (YFAI) in Abuja.
FG Begins Consultations on Apiculture Policy
Representing the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, the Director of Quality Assurance and Certification in the ministry, Dr Nurullah Abubakar, said consultations on the proposed policy framework would begin immediately.
He revealed that the ministry had received directives to accelerate efforts toward establishing a structured national policy for the beekeeping sector.
Ministry Officials Active in Beekeeping
Dr Abubakar noted that senior officials within the ministry, including the minister and the permanent secretary, are actively involved in apiculture farming.
According to him, the ministry’s Quality Assurance and Certification Department is focused on helping Nigerian beekeepers earn foreign exchange through the export of honey and other bee-related products.
Concerns Over Threats to Bee Population
The ministry warned that global bee populations are under increasing pressure from climate change, habitat destruction, bush burning, pesticide misuse, pests and diseases.
Officials stressed the need for stronger environmental protection measures, sustainable agricultural practices and deliberate policy actions to preserve pollinators.
Stakeholders Highlight Economic Potential
Dr Victor Egbon, representing the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Chinyere Ijeoma-Akujobi, described apiculture as a viable economic sector with enormous untapped potential in Nigeria.
She stated that pure honey currently sells for as much as ₦10,000 per litre, making beekeeping a profitable venture capable of supporting exports, environmental conservation and community development.
YFAI Says Nigeria Faces Honey Supply Gap
Director-General of the Youth for Apiculture Initiative, Yusuf Adeyemo, said the organisation has trained several young Nigerians over the last eight years, many of whom now own successful honey brands supplying major markets and hotels.
He disclosed that Nigeria imports about 400,000 tonnes of honey annually while local production currently meets only about 10 percent of demand.
“The huge supply gap presents enormous opportunities for young Nigerians in honey production, packaging, branding, advocacy and export,” Adeyemo said.
Experts Link Bee Conservation to Food Security
Guest lecturer at the event, Dr Muyideen Tela, described bees as critical to global food systems and ecosystem preservation.
He explained that one out of every three meals consumed globally depends on bee pollination and noted that pollinators contribute billions of dollars yearly to the world economy through improved crop yields and environmental stability.
Stakeholders at the event also called for increased investment in beekeeping, youth participation, environmental protection and public awareness to unlock the full economic potential of Nigeria’s apiculture industry. Politics › Pantami Walks Away From APC Race, Raises Alarm Over Electoral Breaches by Editorialtimes(op): 7:02am On May 20 |
By Queen Madaki GOMBE, Nigeria — Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries in Gombe State, citing alleged breaches of the Electoral Act 2026 and irregularities in the party’s nomination process.
The development was disclosed on Tuesday by former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad in a post on his X account.
“Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami has withdrawn from the APC governorship primaries in Gombe State, citing alleged breaches of the Electoral Act 2026 and irregularities in the electoral process,” Ahmad wrote.
Consensus Candidate Decision Sparks Crisis
Pantami’s withdrawal comes amid growing tensions within the APC in Gombe State following the controversial adoption of Jamilu Gwamna as the party’s consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 elections.
The endorsement reportedly followed a stakeholders’ meeting presided over by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, a move that drew immediate opposition from some aspirants who had purchased nomination forms.
Pantami Rejects ‘Coronation’ Process
In a statement issued after the consensus announcement, Pantami distanced himself from the process, describing it as a “coronation” rather than a legitimate internal agreement.
He argued that no valid consensus could be reached without the express consent of all aspirants who obtained and completed nomination forms.
“Legally, there can be no valid consensus without involving the aspirants who have obtained or completed their expression of interest and nomination forms,” Pantami said.
Electoral Act Cited in Objection
Pantami based his objection on provisions of the Electoral Act, maintaining that political parties are limited to either a consensus arrangement backed by unanimous agreement or direct primaries involving eligible party members.
He said the process adopted in Gombe did not meet these legal requirements.
Internal Divisions Deepen in Gombe APC
The dispute has further exposed divisions within the ruling party in Gombe State, where several aspirants have raised concerns over what they describe as exclusionary and imposed arrangements ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Political observers say the controversy could influence the party’s internal cohesion as preparations intensify for the next electoral cycle. Source: The Bureau Journal

Politics › Kachallah Named In Jet Forfeiture Controversy by Editorialtimes(op): 7:15pm On May 19 |
By Endurance Enemona Samuel ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the final forfeiture of a private jet linked to Abdulsalam Mustapha Kachallah, a former Chairman of the Borno State Rural Electrification Board, to the Federal Government.
The ruling was delivered on Monday following an application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which alleged that the aircraft was connected to proceeds of corruption and fraud linked to the Maiduguri Emergency Power Project (MEPP).
Court Rejects Ownership Claim
Presiding judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, held that Valiente Jet Limited — a company owned by Kachallah — failed to provide sufficient evidence to establish the lawful origin of funds used to acquire the aircraft.
The company had appeared in court as an interested party in opposition to the EFCC’s forfeiture application.
EFCC Links Aircraft to Power Project Fraud
According to the EFCC, the private jet was traced to alleged corrupt practices connected to contracts awarded under the Maiduguri Emergency Power Project.
The agency stated that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited awarded power-related contracts worth approximately $114.1 million under the project framework.
The EFCC further alleged that Kachallah, while serving as chairman of the Borno electrification board and a member of the project steering committee, used his position and access to officials to facilitate illicit financial transactions.
Profile of Abdulsalam Kachallah
Abdulsalam Mustapha Kachallah, popularly known as “Bom Boy,” is a politician and engineer from Borno State and the son of the late former governor, Mala Kachallah, who governed the state between 1999 and 2003.
He was appointed in 2021 by Governor Babagana Zulum as Chairman of the Borno State Rural Electrification Board.
Kachallah studied Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the University of Maiduguri and is affiliated with professional bodies including the Nigerian Society of Engineers and the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
Political Background and Party Movements
In 2019, Kachallah defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after losing the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council federal constituency election for the House of Representatives.
He later emerged as an aspirant for the same federal constituency seat under the APC and obtained nomination and expression of interest forms ahead of the party’s primary elections.
He was photographed with Governor Babagana Zulum while holding his nomination documents during his political campaign activities.
APC Primary Election Outcome
Before the party primaries, Kachallah reportedly rejected a consensus arrangement backed by some APC stakeholders in Borno State, which was said to favour the incumbent lawmaker Abdulkadir Rahis.
In the primary election held on Saturday, Rahis was declared winner after polling 38,576 votes, defeating Kachallah and other contenders in the constituency race. Source: https://thebureaujournal.com/2026/05/19/efcc-private-jet-forfeiture-kachallah-borno/

Politics › Kano Awash With Amaechi Posters Ahead Of Possible 2027 Bid by Editorialtimes(op): 2:56pm On May 19 |
By Suleiman Ramat KANO, Nigeria — Campaign-style posters bearing the image of former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, appeared across major parts of Kano on Tuesday, fueling fresh speculation about his possible presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The posters were prominently displayed around the busy Dangi Roundabout and other strategic locations in the city, drawing attention from commuters and residents and igniting conversations about the evolving political landscape in Nigeria.
Amaechi Emerges in Early 2027 Conversations
Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and former Minister of Transportation, has been widely mentioned as a potential presidential aspirant under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The sudden appearance of the posters in Kano is being interpreted by political observers as an early move to build support in the North-West, one of Nigeria’s most influential voting blocs.
Why Kano Matters in Nigeria’s Political Equation
Kano remains one of the most politically significant states in the country due to its large voting population and strategic importance during national elections.
Political analysts say any serious presidential contender seeking nationwide support is likely to invest heavily in outreach efforts across northern states, particularly Kano.
Amaechi is also believed to enjoy some level of influence in the region. He holds the traditional title of Dan Amanar Kasar Hausa, conferred in Daura, Katsina State.
ADC Internal Crisis Raises Questions
Despite growing interest in his potential candidacy, analysts warn that internal disagreements within the African Democratic Congress could undermine the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections.
Some opposition figures have alleged that efforts by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may complicate the ADC’s internal restructuring, although no formal evidence has been presented to support those claims.
Political Activities Set to Intensify
With more than a year to go before party primaries begin, early campaign signals such as the Kano posters suggest that political maneuvering is already underway.
“The appearance of these posters is one of the earliest public signs that political alignments for the 2027 presidential race are already taking shape.”
As the race toward 2027 gathers momentum, Kano is expected to remain a critical battleground for presidential hopefuls and political parties seeking to shape Nigeria’s next leadership contest. Source: The Bureau Journal

Wike Reportedly Directs Rivers Loyalists To Defect To APC After Supreme Court PDP Ruling
By Queen Madaki| AbujaMinister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reportedly directed his loyalists in Rivers State to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the Supreme Court’s final judgment on the party’s leadership crisis. According to sources familiar with the development, Wike issued the directive on Friday night, shortly after the apex court’s decision, and his loyal candidates in Rivers State began obtaining APC nomination forms the following day. “Wike has moved on following the Supreme Court’s final judgment. On Friday night, he directed his PDP candidates in Rivers State to defect to the APC, and by yesterday they had begun picking up APC nomination forms,” a source disclosed. Supreme Court Judgment Triggers Political RealignmentThe reported move has intensified speculation over Wike’s political strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections and signals a possible major realignment in Rivers State politics. A Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Supreme Court judgment, cited in media reports, indicated that the faction aligned with Wike did not prevail in the dispute over control of the PDP leadership structure. The apex court reportedly dismissed both Wike’s cross-appeal and the main appeal filed by the Tanimu Turaki-led faction, which is aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. PDP Faction Rejects Purported Certified True CopyIn response, Abdulrahman Mohammed, who claims to be the National Chairman of the PDP, rejected the circulated document, insisting it was not an officially certified copy of the Supreme Court ruling. In a statement issued by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Mohammed Haruna Jagunda, the group argued that the document lacked the required certification, stamp, and signature of authorised Supreme Court officials. “The document currently in circulation was not officially released by the Supreme Court,” the statement said. The faction maintained that, even if the document were genuine, its contents still confirmed the defeat of Kabiru Turaki and others from the Federal High Court to the Supreme Court. Political Implications Ahead Of 2027The latest developments have deepened uncertainty over the future of the PDP and the balance of power among its leading figures. Political observers say any large-scale movement of Wike’s loyalists into the APC could significantly alter the political dynamics in Rivers State and influence preparations for the 2027 elections. Business › Naira Holds Ground At ₦1,364/$ Amid FX Reform Momentum by Editorialtimes(op): 12:05pm On May 09 |
Naira Holds Steady at N1,364/$ as CBN Reforms Support Market Stability
By Queen MadakiThe naira closed the first trading week of May 2026 on a relatively stable note against the United States dollar, settling at N1,364/$ in the official foreign exchange market.
Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed the local currency maintained positive momentum for most of the week, reinforcing signs of improving stability in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market, The Business Bureau reports.
The latest performance extends gains recorded at the end of April and reflects growing investor confidence in ongoing foreign exchange reforms introduced by the CBN.
What the Data Is Saying
The naira traded within a relatively narrow band during the week, highlighting reduced volatility and improved market confidence.
Friday: N1,364/$ Thursday: N1,358.01/$ Wednesday: N1,361/$ Tuesday: N1,362/$ Monday: N1,367.5/$
Two weeks earlier, the currency had weakened to N1,383/$, meaning the naira gained approximately N19 against the dollar over the period.
Compared with the previous week, the local currency also posted stronger levels:
Thursday (previous week): N1,374/$ Wednesday: N1,370.5/$ Tuesday: N1,383/$ Monday: N1,369/$
Naira Continues Recovery from April Weakness
The recent appreciation underscores the naira’s steady recovery from pressures experienced at the beginning of April.
April 1: N1,376/$ April 2: N1,382.75/$ April 7: N1,389/$ April 9: N1,365/$
The Business Bureau previously reported that the naira closed April 2026 at N1,374/$ compared with N1,387/$ at the end of March, marking the currency’s first April gain since 2024.
External Reserves Slip Slightly
Despite the currency’s gains, Nigeria’s external reserves declined marginally, indicating a modest reduction in the CBN’s intervention buffer.
May 7, 2026: $48.33 billion May 4, 2026: $48.34 billion
The movement represents a decline of approximately $14.8 million over the period.
CBN Maintains Optimistic Outlook
Market participants say the CBN has continued to restrict Bureau De Change (BDC) operators’ access to the official foreign exchange market as part of efforts to improve transparency and curb speculative activities.
Earlier in April, Nigeria’s external reserves fell by about $731 million within three weeks, but the apex bank has maintained confidence in the country’s external position.
The CBN projects that reserves could rise to $51 billion by the end of 2026 as part of its broader macroeconomic stabilisation and confidence-restoration agenda.
Attention Turns to MPC Meeting
Investors are now focused on the Central Bank’s 305th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting scheduled for May 19–20, 2026.
The meeting follows the February 2026 interest rate cut and is expected to provide further guidance on the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) and the outlook for inflation, exchange rates, and economic stability.
Analysts say the naira’s ability to sustain recent gains will depend on continued policy discipline, improved foreign exchange liquidity, and stronger non-oil dollar inflows. Source: https://thebureau.com.ng/naira-closes-at-1364-dollar-cbn-reforms-boost-stability/

INEC State Assembly Delimitation: Alleged Conspiracy Against Igala/Bassa Sparks Tension In Kogi
By Queen Madaki
Lokoja – Nigeria News Today | The Bureau NewsTension has continued to trail the ongoing Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) consultations on the release and restoration of suppressed State Assembly constituencies in Kogi State following allegations of a conspiracy against the Igala/Bassa people.
A participant at the INEC stakeholders’ session, Salifu Oguche Usman Esq., accused some political stakeholders from Kogi Central and Kogi West of allegedly attempting to influence the process in a manner that would disadvantage Kogi East.
Allegations Of Political Conspiracy
In a statement made available to journalists, Salifu alleged that there was an orchestrated move to abandon existing court judgments relating to constituency restoration and instead adopt what he described as an “equality formula” for the allocation of State Assembly seats.
According to him, the proposal allegedly sought to allocate four Assembly seats to each federal constituency across the state.
“There was a conspiracy against Kogi East led by our Ebira brothers who hijacked the first round of the stakeholders session with an intention of endorsing a proposal for departure from the judgment and resort to equality of Senatorial district in such a way as to give each House of Representative constituency four Assembly seats,” he stated.
He claimed that under the proposed arrangement, several constituencies in Kogi Central and Kogi West would gain additional State Assembly seats, while Igala/Bassa communities would allegedly receive only one additional constituency.
Claims Against Kogi Government Officials
The participant further alleged that the Attorney General of Kogi State supervised presentations made during the session and influenced the direction of discussions.
“The conspiracy was perfected by a brief from the Attorney General of Kogi State who was on ground to supervise the presentation by the two legal briefs written on behalf of the Central and West,” Salifu alleged.
He, however, commended some stakeholders from Kogi East for insisting on strict compliance with court judgments and constitutional provisions guiding constituency delineation.
According to him, traditional rulers and representatives from Kogi East argued strongly in favour of restoring suppressed constituencies based on population spread and existing legal decisions.
“The technical session saw the Igala position gain traction with our people being bold and courageous in asking INEC to follow the judgments and restore suppressed constituencies as was the focus of this exercise,” he said.
INEC Yet To Announce Final Position
Salifu disclosed that INEC officials at the meeting promised to receive additional written submissions from stakeholders before making a final decision on the matter.
He called on political leaders and stakeholders from Igala/Bassa areas to unite and defend what he described as their collective political interest.
“There is a grand conspiracy against us, I saw it in full glare yesterday. Our political representatives were summoned to rubber stamp the agenda of our adversaries,” he added.
As of the time of filing this report, neither INEC nor the Kogi State Government had officially responded to the allegations raised at the stakeholders’ session.

Politics › APC Exempts Tinubu From Screening Ahead Of Presidential Primaries by Editorialtimes(op): 7:33pm On May 06 |
[i]APC Waives Screening for Tinubu Ahead of Presidential PPrimaries The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has waived the screening requirement for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the party’s presidential primaries, declaring him duly cleared to participate.
The decision was reached during the NWC’s 188th meeting held on May 6, 2026, and was disclosed in a statement issued by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka.
According to the statement, the committee relied on provisions of the party’s constitution to grant the waiver, citing Tinubu’s status as incumbent president, his prior clearance in 2022, and widespread endorsements from party stakeholders.
NWC Cites Constitutional Powers, Prior Clearance
“This decision was made pursuant to the powers conferred on the NWC under Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv) of the Constitution of APC to organise and supervise the Party’s primaries and, in special circumstances, grant waivers in the best interest of the Party,” the statement read.
The NWC noted that President Tinubu had already undergone screening and was cleared ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries, making a repeat process unnecessary.
It added that compelling the president to appear again before a screening committee would be redundant given his current position as leader of the party.
Endorsements Strengthen Waiver Decision
The committee also referenced the president’s endorsement by key party organs, including the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), members of the National Assembly, and other stakeholders.
These endorsements were reaffirmed during the APC National Summit held on May 22, 2025, alongside other statutory party engagements.
APC Extends Deadlines for Aspirants
Meanwhile, the APC has extended the deadlines for the sale and submission of expression of interest and nomination forms for aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party also adjusted its screening timetable as part of efforts to accommodate more participants in the ongoing electoral process.

The approval comes shortly after The Bureau News reported widespread frustration among residents over continued water shortages despite previous government spending in the sector. The Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, disclosed that the intervention targets major facilities whose declining performance has significantly reduced water supply across the state. Kano Water Crisis: Key Projects TargetedAccording to the commissioner, ₦9.9 billion has been earmarked for the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant and the restoration of its Raw Water Pump Station. Another ₦11.39 billion will be used to rehabilitate the Challawa Raw Water Pump Station and Water Treatment Plant, alongside the restoration of the Goron Dutse Reservoirs, a critical distribution hub within Kano metropolis. He added that the Challawa plant, with a production capacity of 220 million litres per day, is functioning below 30 percent capacity. Crime › NDLEA Seizes ₦16.9 Billion Naira Drugs In Lagos by Editorialtimes(op): 12:52pm On Apr 29 |
NDLEA Busts Lagos Drug Warehouses, Seizes Tramadol, Codeine Worth N16.9bn
By Enemona Samuel EnduranceOperatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have uncovered three illicit drug warehouses hidden within a residential estate in Lagos, seizing tramadol pills and codeine syrup valued at N16,927,200,000.
The operation, described as intelligence-driven and highly coordinated, took place in the Okota area of Lagos State, according to The Business Bureau.
Massive Drug Seizure in Residential Estate
In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed that the raids were carried out on April 17 at multiple locations within Park View Estate, Ago Palace, Okota.
The addresses raided include 98 Olukayode Awofisayo Street and 5 Charles Ndumetu Street, where operatives uncovered a major drug warehouse along with two additional storage facilities.
During the operation, NDLEA officials recovered:
2,360,000 pills of high-potency tramadol (225mg)
1,909,400 bottles of codeine syrup
The seized codeine syrup was packed in 19,094 cartons, while tramadol pills were stored in 34 cartons.
NDLEA Describes Operation as Major Breakthrough
Reacting to the development, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), described the operation as a major blow to drug trafficking networks.
“The scale of this recovery, nearly 4.3 million units of lethal substances, is a testament to the fact that our officers are staying several steps ahead of these merchants of death,” Marwa said.
He added that the discovery of such large volumes of illicit drugs within residential estates underscores both the desperation of drug syndicates and the effectiveness of the agency’s intelligence network.
Warning to Drug Syndicates
Marwa further issued a strong warning to traffickers, stressing that no part of Nigeria would serve as a safe haven for illegal drug operations.
“We will find you, dismantle your networks, and bring the full weight of the law upon you,” he warned.
The Business Bureau reports that the latest raid highlights ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to combat substance abuse and disrupt illicit drug supply chains across the country.
Growing Concern Over Drug Abuse
The seizure comes amid increasing concerns about the widespread abuse of pharmaceutical opioids such as tramadol and codeine, particularly among young Nigerians.
Authorities have repeatedly identified the illegal distribution of these substances as a major public health and security challenge, with links to organised crime and social instability.
The NDLEA has intensified enforcement actions in recent years, targeting both importation networks and domestic distribution channels. Source: The Business Bureau

Crime › Terrorists Demand ₦150m Ransom For Kogi Orphanage Children by Editorialtimes(op): 5:15pm On Apr 28 |
Nigeria News Today: Kidnappers Demand ₦150 Million Ransom for Abducted Children in Kogi By Queen Madaki The Bureau News reports that abductors of children from an orphanage and school located in a remote area of Zariagi, along the Kabba Junction axis of Lokoja in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State, have demanded a ransom of ₦150 million for their release. The abduction, which occurred late on Sunday night, saw 26 persons—comprising 24 children and two wives of the proprietor—abducted when armed men invaded the facility. A teacher at the school, Isah Hajarat, told our correspondent that the attack began at about 11:00 p.m., throwing the area into chaos. “Some of the children managed to escape during the attack, but nine people are still in the custody of the abductors. The kidnappers have contacted the proprietor and are demanding a ₦150 million ransom,” he said. One of the students who escaped, Faruk Alhassan, recounted the ordeal, describing how panic broke out when the gunmen stormed the premises. “When they came, we started shouting and running for safety. Some of us hid in one of the rooms, but they followed us there and tried to take my younger brother. We all started crying,” he said. Faruk added that he later fled into the bush, from where he contacted his father, who alerted security operatives. Although he could not clearly identify the attackers, he noted that some of them were masked and armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons. He appealed to the government to intensify efforts to rescue those still in captivity. Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, said 17 of the abducted persons had been rescued through joint efforts by security agencies, local hunters and vigilantes. “Our men received a distress call at about 11:45 p.m. and immediately mobilised to the scene. Working with local security groups, we were able to rescue 17 victims, while others, including the proprietor’s two wives and some children, are still missing,” he said. The CP added that a coordinated search-and-rescue operation involving the police, military, hunters and vigilante groups is ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims. “As we speak, our teams are combing the surrounding forests. These criminals do not stay in one location, so we are intensifying surveillance and collaborating with nearby communities. We are confident that the remaining victims will be rescued and the perpetrators brought to justice,” he assured. Kankarofi, however, raised concerns about the facility’s safety standards, noting that it was located in a highly isolated area with inadequate security infrastructure. “The school is in a remote forested area with no access road, no perimeter fencing and inadequate structures. It is also not captured in our security framework, which made proactive surveillance difficult,” he said. He advised individuals planning to establish such facilities to ensure proper registration and notify relevant authorities to enable adequate security arrangements. The police commissioner also urged parents to be mindful of the safety conditions of schools and orphanages before enrolling their children. The Bureau News understands that efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining victims as security operations intensify. Source: https://thebureaunews.com/kogi-abduction-ransom/

Water Scarcity Persists in Kano Despite Over ₦1bn Government Spending
By Suleiman AhmadThe Bureau News reports that residents of Kano State are still grappling with severe water scarcity despite significant government spending aimed at addressing the long-standing crisis.
When Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf assumed office, expectations were high among residents that the persistent water shortage affecting Kano metropolis would be resolved.
However, findings indicate that the problem remains largely unaddressed, leaving many communities without access to clean and reliable water supply.
Residents Lament Continued Water Shortage
Across several parts of Kano city, residents continue to struggle daily to meet their basic water needs.
Despite reported government expenditure exceeding ₦1 billion on water supply interventions, many households still lack access to potable water.
The situation has forced a large number of residents to depend heavily on water vendors for essential domestic activities such as cooking, washing, and drinking.
Rising Cost of Water Deepens Hardship
The ongoing scarcity has significantly increased the cost of living, particularly for low-income families.
Many households now allocate a substantial portion of their income to purchasing water, further worsening economic pressures.
Residents have expressed concern over the disconnect between government spending and the realities on the ground.
Calls for Transparency and Urgent Action
Concerned citizens are calling on the Kano State Government to provide greater transparency regarding how funds allocated for water projects have been utilised.
They also urged authorities to implement practical and sustainable solutions to address the persistent shortage.
Stakeholders warn that without immediate intervention, the water crisis could continue to impact public health, sanitation, and overall quality of life in Kano State.
The Bureau News understands that the situation remains a critical concern for residents, as expectations for improved infrastructure and service delivery continue to grow. Source: https://thebureaunews.com/kano-water-scarcity-government-spending/

Politics › Kogi PDP Crisis Deepens As Youth Wing Accuses Elders Of Extortion by Editorialtimes(op): 3:40pm On Apr 28 |
PDP Youth Blasts PDP ‘Elders’ in Kogi, Alleges Extortion and Hidden AgendasThe Bureau News reports that a fresh internal crisis has erupted within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State, following a strong rebuttal by party stakeholder, Michael Samuel Idoko, against a group identified as the Kogi East PDP Elders Council.
Idoko, a long-standing member and grassroots mobiliser within the party, described the group’s recent statement against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as misleading, politically motivated, and lacking legitimacy.
Idoko Questions Legitimacy of PDP Elders Council
Reacting to a widely circulated statement attributed to the group, Idoko challenged both the identity and constitutional standing of the so-called elders.
He argued that the PDP is governed by established structures and not by what he described as “faceless individuals” who emerge during election cycles.
According to him, the group does not represent any recognised organ within the party’s framework.
Allegations of Opportunism and Political Manipulation
Idoko accused members of the council of acting as opportunists who resurface during political seasons to influence outcomes for personal gain.
He alleged that such actors often position themselves as intermediaries to aspirants, claiming influence while pursuing private interests.
He further claimed that the recent criticism of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was not based on principle but driven by hidden political interests.
Defence of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan
In his response, Idoko defended the actions of the Kogi Central lawmaker, stating that her engagement with stakeholders across the state should not be misconstrued.
He maintained that her outreach reflects party unity and participation, rather than interference in regional affairs.
Idoko also warned against attempts to create divisions within the party along regional lines, describing such narratives as harmful to the PDP’s national outlook.
Zoning Dispute and Internal Party Structure
Addressing the issue of zoning, Idoko insisted that existing arrangements within the party should be respected.
He noted that decisions on zoning were made through recognised party channels and should not be subject to reinterpretation.
According to him, any attempt to alter agreed structures undermines internal democracy and due process.
Rejection of Imposition Claims
Idoko dismissed allegations that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was attempting to impose candidates, describing such claims as unfounded.
He stated that political endorsement remains a legitimate aspect of democratic engagement and should not be equated with imposition.
Call for Restraint and Party Unity
He urged members of the party to channel grievances through established internal mechanisms rather than public confrontations.
Idoko warned against what he described as defamatory attacks and called for discipline among party stakeholders.
He further emphasised that the PDP remains a structured political institution guided by rules, not individual interests.
The Bureau News understands that the development has intensified internal debates within the Kogi State chapter of the PDP, as political activities ahead of future elections continue to gather momentum. Source: https://thebureaunews.com/idoko-pdp-kogi-elders-crisis/

Politics › Asset Forfeiture Case: Malami Challenges EFCC, Seeks Order Reversal by Editorialtimes(op): 3:28pm On Apr 27 |
[i]Abubakar Malami Challenges EFCC Over Alleged Illicit Assets, Seeks Reversal of Forfeiture Order The Bureau News reports that former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has launched a strong legal challenge against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the interim forfeiture of multiple properties, insisting the assets were lawfully acquired.
In an affidavit filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, Malami maintained that all properties listed in the January 2026 forfeiture order were obtained through legitimate means, including years of legal practice, business investments, and declared income.
Malami Rejects EFCC Allegations
The EFCC had earlier secured an interim forfeiture order on the suspicion that the properties were linked to illicit funds. However, Malami argued that the anti-graft agency failed to present prima facie evidence connecting the assets to any criminal activity.
“There is no document before the court showing these properties were acquired with proceeds of crime,” he stated.
He described the allegations as speculative and lacking credible proof.
Dispute Over Asset Valuation
A central part of Malami’s defence is his claim that the EFCC significantly inflated the value of the assets to strengthen its case.
According to him, properties acquired for hundreds of millions of naira were presented as being worth billions, a claim he said has been contradicted by independent valuers who provided more accurate assessments.
Malami Details Sources of Wealth
The former AGF attributed his wealth to multiple legitimate sources, including over three decades of legal practice and investments in sectors such as hospitality, agriculture, and education.
He also listed loans from commercial banks, proceeds from asset sales, and earnings from book launches among his income streams.
Malami further stated that all his earnings were duly declared to the Code of Conduct Bureau in compliance with existing laws.
Allegations of Due Process Violations
Beyond the financial dispute, Malami accused the EFCC of exceeding its legal powers in the execution of the forfeiture order.
He alleged that operatives seized properties without a final court order, evicted family members from residences, and confiscated documents.
Describing the actions as extrajudicial, he argued that they amounted to a breach of due process.
The Bureau News understands that the case, which is linked to an ongoing criminal charge against Malami, is expected to test the scope of the EFCC’s asset forfeiture powers and adherence to constitutional procedures.
The court is expected to determine whether the assets will be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government or returned to Malami. Source: The Bureau News
