The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has announced the commencement of the new pension increments for retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS), confirming that adjustments will reflect in the September 2025 payroll cycle.

According to a statement posted on its official X handle, PTAD revealed that the increment package includes a fixed ₦32,000 payment alongside percentage increases of 10.66% and 12.95% for eligible categories, benefiting about 832,000 pensioners across Nigeria.

The increment follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval in August for a welfare enhancement package for DBS pensioners. The reforms include:

A ₦32,000 increment across board.

10.66% and 12.95% increases for pensioners of defunct and privatised agencies.

Pension harmonisation for all DBS pensioners.

Enrolment of retirees into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Settlement of long-standing unfunded pension liabilities.

PTAD confirmed that the implementation was made possible through the partial release of ₦820.188 billion by the Federal Ministry of Finance from the ₦845 billion emergency allocation earlier approved by the Presidency. The funds will cover the initial rollout of the increments.

The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested two suspects for criminal conspiracy, impersonation, and unlawful importation of prohibited goods in a major security breakthrough along the Nigeria–Benin Republic border.

Fake Police Officer Arrested in Dandi LGA

One of the suspects, Yusuf M. Alhaji from Kano State, was intercepted by the Divisional Police Officer in Dolekaina, Dandi Local Government Area. Yusuf allegedly posed as a special constabulary officer with the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police, claiming attachment to Rijiyar Zaki Divisional Headquarters in Kano State.

Police investigations revealed he was in possession of three metal jars of liquid mercury, each weighing 34.5kg. The seized mercury had a total value of 2.8 million CFA francs (₦7.5 million) and was allegedly imported illegally without proper registration or licensing.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Makurdi, the North Central Women Front (NCWF), led by Mrs. Mary Adamu, condemned the leadership of the Senate for allegedly frustrating bright and articulate lawmakers, particularly Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

“The recent action of the Senate leadership can only lead to moral and political disorder. The Senate appears to have become a casual blackboard for juvenile graffiti,” the women declared.

They also praised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for standing firm on issues in the Senate, describing the treatment of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan as “an ascendancy of evil in the country.”

Senate Clerk Accused of Promoting Anti-Natasha Agenda

The trial of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan will officially commence on Tuesday before Justice Chizoba Oji of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Maitama, following her plea of not guilty to the charges filed against her.

Senator Natasha’s Case Moves to Trial

The Federal Government accused the Kogi-born senator of making statements “with reason to believe such imputations would harm the reputation of a person.” The charges were brought under Section 391 of the Penal Code, Cap 89, Laws of the Federation 1990, and are punishable under Section 392.

At a previous sitting, the lawmaker was granted bail in the sum of ₦50 million with one surety in like sum.

Court records show the case was filed before the FCT High Court on May 16, 2025, with Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan listed as the sole defendant.

Parallel Case Before Another Court

The Bureau News recalls that Senator Natasha is also facing a separate suit before Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court, Abuja. In that matter, she has been charged with six counts bordering on alleged criminal defamation and cyberbullying.

Armed kidnappers launched a daring midnight attack on the residence of a man identified simply as Waye in Jikwoyi, a suburb of Abuja, on Friday, September 19, 2025.

According to reports gathered by The Bureau News, the incident occurred around 1:00 a.m., when the assailants cut through the barbed wire fence and gained entry into the compound.

Dogs and Relatives Knocked Out with Chemical

Residents said the kidnappers sprayed a substance on two security dogs, rendering them unconscious. The attackers also forced open the windows of rooms where some relatives of the victim were staying and used the same chemical, knocking them out cold.

“They later broke the window to Waye’s room. But before they could carry out their mission, the neighbourhood became alert and the police sirens started blaring,” a neighbour told The Bureau News, requesting anonymity.

Gunfire and Chaos in the Neighbourhood

The kidnappers reportedly opened fire into the air and also shot at residents who came out to intervene. Witnesses said the gang was in contact with a leader they referred to as Commander, who instructed them in Hausa language to abduct one of Waye’s relatives when their initial attempt failed.

“They nearly shot one of our neighbours in the head,” another resident recounted.

Failed Abduction Linked to Recent Incidents

This latest incident comes just weeks after another botched kidnap attempt in Karu Extension, less than a kilometre from Waye’s compound.

Residents say the attacks have raised growing fears about the security situation in Abuja’s satellite towns.

Attempts to reach the Jikwoyi Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for comment were unsuccessful as of press time.

The Bureau News —The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested four suspects for vandalizing and stealing a transformer belonging to Government Girls Secondary School, Dakingari in Bunza Local Government Area.

Confirming the arrest, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Shafi’u Abubakar, said the suspects were paraded at the Police Headquarters in Birnin Kebbi following swift action by officers and vigilantes.

How the Arrest Happened

According to Abubakar, on September 10, 2025, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Bunza received intelligence that hoodlums had trespassed into the school premises to vandalize the transformer.

The DPO promptly mobilized his men alongside vigilantes to the scene, where the suspects were caught in the act using a chainsaw and other tools.

A black Toyota Corolla (Eagle Eyes) with registration number KNT-359-SN, Niger State was recovered, and two suspects—Sanusi Muhammad and Ibrahim Lawal of Sokoto State—were arrested immediately. The criminals had tied up the school watchman, Muhammad Danda Masa Nasharu, before commencing the vandalism.

Further investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) led to the arrest of two fleeing accomplices, Tasi’u Abubakar and Tasi’u Abdullahi, both from Zamfara State.

The police also recovered the vandalized armored cables and tools used for the crime.

Zuru dismissed the allegations as baseless and described Malami as a “confused new-breed politician” whose desperation to undermine Governor Idris and frustrate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 had pushed him into political blackmail.

“It is common knowledge that some selfish politicians in Kebbi and across Nigeria are trying to adulterate our democracy with hooliganism. But Nigerians are more aware than ever and will continue to support leaders with credibility and proven track records,” Zuru stated.

Kebbi Governor’s Record Defended

Zuru highlighted Governor Idris’ journey from trade unionism into politics, recalling his tenure as President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and later as Deputy National President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

According to him, Governor Idris’ stewardship since 2023 has delivered unprecedented infrastructure, urban renewal projects, and economic empowerment programs, while also completing abandoned projects from previous administrations.

Stakeholders in Kebbi, he said, have recognized these achievements, which led to defections of opposition lawmakers into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and a unanimous vote of confidence in both Tinubu and Idris ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Malami Accused of Smear Campaign

Zuru alleged that Malami, frustrated after losing grip on APC structures in Kebbi, defected to the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) and anointed himself its governorship candidate despite the party’s weak presence in the state.

He further accused Malami of bankrolling media propaganda, smear campaigns, and political hooliganism, adding that reports had surfaced of Malami allegedly hiring armed thugs from neighboring states to disrupt political activities in Kebbi.

During one such incident, Zuru claimed, Malami’s thugs accompanied him on a condolence visit to the Emir of Gwandu’s palace, where they intimidated residents and vandalized APC property.

APC Stakeholders Demand Malami’s Arrest

In reaction, APC stakeholders, including serving and former lawmakers, led by Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero, held a press conference calling for Malami’s arrest and prosecution for what they described as baseless allegations capable of threatening peace and stability in Kebbi.

Zuru concluded by emphasizing that Malami’s “selfish and unpatriotic ambitions” cannot be compared with Governor Idris’ humility, generosity, and commitment to Kebbi’s development.

The Federal High Court in Abuja will today (Monday) hear an application filed by detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, seeking an order for his transfer from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) to the National Hospital, Abuja, for urgent medical treatment.

The application, filed on September 3 by Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), follows what Kanu’s lawyers described as a “worrisome decline” in his health while in detention.

Judge Grants Leave for Urgent Hearing

Vacation judge, Justice Musa Liman, had earlier ruled that the matter could be heard during the court’s annual vacation, citing the urgency of the health concerns.

“I believe that the right to health is as important as the right to life. And so I agree that this matter can be heard by the vacation court,” Justice Liman declared, fixing September 15 for hearing and directing Kanu’s counsel, Uchenna Njoku (SAN), to serve processes on the DSS.

Medical Reports Raise Alarm

In a supporting affidavit, Kanu’s brother, Emmanuel Kanu, stated that the IPOB leader had been experiencing persistent weakness and body pains. A medical team led by Emeritus Prof. Austin A.C. Agaji reportedly discovered troubling complications, including:

Kidney and liver-related issues

Dangerously low potassium levels

A swelling under his armpit requiring urgent investigation

Suspected pancreatic and liver concerns

Agabi informed the court that doctors had strongly recommended Kanu’s transfer to the National Hospital as an interim measure. He also noted that a letter sent to the DSS Director-General advising the transfer had not received any response.

Legal Arguments Before the Court

Kanu’s lawyers stressed that granting the transfer would not prejudice the DSS but was necessary to protect his fundamental rights.

“The applicant’s health is seriously deteriorating considering the nature of his confinement, thereby making it more pressing to bring this application before a vacation judge,” Agabi argued.

The application, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015, lists 11 grounds for approval, including the constitutional right to health and life.

Kanu’s Detention Since 2021

Nnamdi Kanu has been in DSS detention since 2021 following his arrest in Kenya and repatriation to Nigeria. He is currently standing trial before Justice James Omotosho on terrorism-related charges.

His legal team also noted that a pending bail application filed on May 19 could not be heard before the commencement of the court’s vacation, leaving him in continued detention.

The court is expected to deliver its ruling after hearing submissions from both parties today.

Former Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Edward Onoja, has opened up about how ex-Governor Yahaya Bello promised him the governorship ticket for four years, only to withdraw his support on the eve of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries. — The Bureau News.

Onoja, who now serves as a board member of the South-East Development Commission, made the revelation during an interview on the MIC ON Podcast released on Saturday.

Four Years of Assurance

Recounting his political journey, Onoja explained that Bello, who was his principal both as Chief of Staff and later as Deputy Governor, consistently assured him that he would be his successor.

“For four years before 2023, he (Yahaya Bello) was the one who called me and said, ‘You will succeed me, get prepared.’ And of course, I planned, I worked, and when it was time, he gave all of us the opportunity to contest,” Onoja said.

According to him, about seven cabinet members, including himself, were instructed by Bello to obtain APC nomination forms.

Bello’s Choice: Ododo Over Onoja

Onoja revealed that Bello’s eventual support went to the current governor, Usman Ahmed Ododo.

“At the end of the day, his heart and his choice were with the current governor, His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo,” Onoja stated.

He added that Bello informed him of the decision just a day before the primary election.

“When he broke the news to me a day before the primaries, I told him, ‘You are the boss, you are over me, what you see is what I see, so let’s go get the job done, but I hope you are not making a mistake,’” Onoja recounted.

Remaining Loyal to APC

Despite his disappointment, Onoja emphasized his loyalty to the APC and explained that he threw his weight behind Ododo’s candidacy, contributing to his victory in the November 2023 governorship election.

The Enugu State Police Command has disclosed major security breakthroughs under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa, who assumed office six months ago as the 29th Commissioner in the state.

Addressing journalists in Enugu as part of activities marking the milestone, CP Giwa revealed that operatives of the Command have in the last six months recovered 105 firearms—including eight AK-47 rifles and a G-3 automatic rifle—alongside 271 rounds of ammunition and 71 vehicles linked to various criminal operations.

A striking exhibit presented was about ₦10 million in ransom money, which police said was recovered from two sisters accused of kidnapping their own kinsman.

Within the same period, the Command arrested over 5,000 suspects across different offences. According to police records, 98 were arrested for armed robbery, 87 for kidnapping, 50 for murder, 11 for rape and defilement, and 122 for cult-related activities.

When asked if the data suggests that crime is rising in Enugu, CP Giwa maintained that the figures reflect both the persistence of criminal elements and the effectiveness of police operations in curbing them.

He also pointed to the successful security management of the recently concluded Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) conference in Enugu as evidence of the Command’s resilience and ability to safeguard lives and property.

Despite the troubling statistics, CP Giwa assured residents that the Command remains committed to sustaining ongoing operations, dismantling criminal networks, and reinforcing community safety across Enugu State.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has released its findings on the July 13th Air Peace incident, where a Boeing 737-500 overshot the runway at Port Harcourt International Airport, raising fresh concerns over airline safety standards in Nigeria.

The flight had departed Lagos with 96 passengers and seven crew members, and weather conditions at landing were reportedly clear, The Bureau News gathered. Investigators revealed the aircraft touched down almost three-quarters of the way into the 3,000-metre runway, leaving no room for safe deceleration. The plane eventually skidded onto the grass verge, but fortunately, all passengers disembarked without injury.

Pilots Test Positive for Alcohol, Crew Member for Cannabis

A disturbing discovery emerged during the investigation: both pilots tested positive for alcohol, while a flight attendant tested positive for cannabis. The Bureau described this as a serious breach of aviation discipline, professionalism, and safety culture.

Further analysis revealed that the first officer had recommended a go-around when it became clear that the approach was unstable. However, the 64-year-old captain, with over 10,000 flight hours, overruled him and insisted on landing. Aviation experts warn that such authority gaps in the cockpit are dangerous and can prevent critical safety decisions from being implemented.

NSIB Directives to Air Peace

Following the incident, the NSIB directed Air Peace to:

Strengthen crew fitness checks to prevent alcohol or drug impairment.

Reinforce training on go-around procedures, emphasising that abandoning an unstable approach is a vital step for safe landings.

Though no lives were lost, the case highlights the non-negotiable standards of aviation safety, reminding both airlines and regulators that alcohol, drugs, and flying can never mix.

“Flying demands absolute discipline. There can be no compromise when safety is at stake,” the Bureau stressed.

This development comes amid increased scrutiny of Nigerian carriers, as stakeholders call for stricter enforcement of safety protocols across the aviation sector.

Troops of 3 Division/Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace (JTF OPEP) have arrested two notorious cattle rustlers in Kogul Village, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, recovering dangerous weapons and ammunition in the process, The Bureau News reports.

The operation, which was carried out on 11 September 2025, followed actionable intelligence that led security operatives to the hideout of the suspects.

The suspects and recovered items are currently in military custody for further investigation, while follow-up operations are underway to apprehend other members of the criminal network.

In a statement, the Nigerian Army said the arrests mark a significant breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat cattle rustling, which has been a major trigger of violent conflicts in Plateau and other parts of the Middle Belt.

“This arrest is pivotal to the ongoing efforts to tackle the triggers of crisis, which troops of 3 Division/JTF OPEP are actively involved in. Our mandate remains restoring peace and stability across the Joint Operations Area,” the statement read.

The development is expected to boost confidence among rural communities in Plateau, who have long suffered from the activities of cattle rustlers and other criminal elements.
