Politics › House speakership: Acn legislators under pressure to defect to PDP. by edoyad(op): 1:10am On May 10, 2011 |
Speakership: ACN Reps under pressure to defect to PDP By John Ameh, Abuja Monday, 9 May 2011 At the moment, there are three PDP House members from the zone in the House, namely, Ajibola Muraina, Mulikat Adeola and Odebunmi Dokun. The development came as politicians from the South-East and the South-West spent the weekend lobbying to clinch the number four position in the country. Already, the Chief Whip of the House, Mr. Emeka Ihedioha; the Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation, Mr. Bethel Amadi; the Chairman of the Committee on Climate Change, Mr. Ezuiche Ubani; and the Chairman of the Committee on Banking/Currency, Mr. Ogbuefi Ozomgbachi, have expressed their desire to be the next speaker. They are all from the South-East. Another likely candidate from the South-East, the Chairman of the House Committee on Marine Transport, Mr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, is said to enjoy the support of many lawmakers, though he has not declared his intention to vie for the seat. Muraina, a lawyer and protégé of former President Olusegun, is said to be the favourite of some power brokers to get the seat among the three PDP members from the South-West. Muraina came to the House in 2007 , the same time as Adeola. Dokun is a new member. The three are from Oyo State. Adeola, a lawyer was reported to have told to some of her colleagues that she was as qualified as Muraina to clinch the seat, wondering why her name was hardly mentioned in the calculations. It was learnt on Sunday that some PDP power brokers in the South-West were using their contacts within and outside the National Assembly to persuade the ACN members to defect and contest to become the Speaker of the House. A source in the National Assembly said, “It is no longer hidden that some forces in the zone are fighting to retain the position of the Speaker. “This was a pre-election understanding but the poor performance of the PDP has led to the negligible number of its members in the House. “The defection idea is to increase the number of PDP members in the House from the zone and also to enhance the zone’s chances of retaining the Speaker’s seat. “Those being wooed are also being reminded of the fact that they stand a chance of becoming the Speaker.” |

Osama Bin Laden: The Death of a Die- Hard Arsenal Fan Osama Bin Laden: An Arsenal Die-hard? By (Featured Columnist) on May 3 2011 Yoosof Farah
Arsenal have many a celebrity fan, from Kevin Costner to Jay-Z to Colin Firth. And now it appears the most hated man on earth was also a diehard Gooner. Ever since "Obama got Osama," the world's headlines have been littered with all kinds of stories about Osama Bin Laden, including how he lived a life of luxury in a secluded, three-story $1 million compound. But what some may not know is that Bin Laden was also rumoured to be an Arsenal fan, and a strong one at that. During a recruitment trip to London in 1994 , Osama Bin Laden apparently became transfixed on the team in red and white, watching as many of the Gunners' games as he possibly could. According to some reports, he was in the famous Clock End terrace to see Arsenal beat Paris St. Germain and Torino in the European Cup Winners' Cup. Any Arsenal fan reading this now could have once sat next to the man who would go on to become the most infamous, hated person the world has ever seen. |

mens dept: Do you think it has anything to do with Islam? That is, the way it's been implemented in the North? Even the originators of the faith -the Arabs, have developed their societies (Morocco/Egypt/Dubai, the Kingdom of Saudi) Exactly ! People talk like it's the only part of the world with muslims. I hate to generalise but i have to say the greed and almajiri culture is the ticking time bomb that would finally cause the implosion. Why would men chosen to lead their people deliberately deceive them into violently rejecting education and modern life styles while their own kids attend the best schools in the west ? |

liquid7: $650m will probably solve the problem of electricity in a state,it will build a few state of the art hospitals,it will create loads of schools ,the list of much more urgent problems is endless.
Nigeria does NOT still have a single hospital that can met the ALS or ATLS standard(i know this as a fact because i and others could not get approval to teach this essential life saving courses in Nigeria as there was not even one hospital in the whole nigeria we could find that met the criteria even private hospitals.the course we eventually provided was without approval and had to be renamed and even then 75% was theaory due to lack of equipment to demonstrate.).
Yet people here are actually supporting the need for another international airport rather then renovate the existing one.
Next time someone you know has a heart attack or a bad car crash and dies in a hospital i am sure you will look at this white elephant airport and think if its worth it.
Even if you are a multi millionare and don't care about anything then you should care if you substain major trauma on a bad nigerian road because news flash flying you out for treatment is not an option ,what happens in first 2 hours is what matters if you live or die.No plane will take you in such an unstable state abroad for treatment if you even make it to the airport!
Same goes for heart attacks and quite a few other critical things.
Nigerians get your priority right .Supporting a $650m new airport is totally out of priority even if its needed which i am not even sure it is. It's a pervading culture in this country, embarking on projects just for the glory and not to impact on the life of the common man. |

namfav: i take it as a positive news in the long run
if the south owns 50% of the industries and yet it is not doing much better than the north then how will things look if the north owned more than 50%? this should tell the northern players that we need to work collectively in the north because there is not much to lose now, the future is in our hands, again this shows that the politics in nigeria is not failing the south it is one sided in favour of the south, it is failing the north, so enough of this talk that the north is behid the failures in the south, the corruption in the south has nothing to do with the north I don't know which i find more ridiculous, jokers like you that live in the delusion that there actually is still something called "north", or people who actually believe the trend of slipping further and further behind is reversible. |

Na wa o ! So some people are still trying to rationalise the disaster that Arsenal is in at the moment ? Ok let's draw a parallel here. Liverpool have beaten Chelsea twice and Utd. once this; they'll probably be finishing just two places below Arsenal too. But it's still agreed that they've had a miserable season considering what they went through. This is for a club that's yet to win the EPL, forget their past glory . Now let's look at the disaster called Chelsea FC in 2010-2011. The traffic on the Chelsea thread alone is enough indication on the Fan's assessment of the team's performance this season.
We can't come here and keep typing superfluous letters hoping that would force others with contrary views to adopt our own point of view . If what we've experienced this season(and last, and the one before last . . ) had occured 2004-2005 period, may be the stark drop in levels would have been clearer enough for many of us to see. When did standards drop so low at hibury/emirates ? Sometimes i find my self wishing the club never left that place. |

Sagamite: I have always said ABU is a top uni. But I maintain it is still slightly below UI, OAU and Unilag.
ABU alumin achievement is slightly advantageous due to the quota system. As it is the only top uni in the North and very limited Northerners going into top unis, the pool for the North's quota is concentrated there.
That said, I don't think it is far off the best.
As I always say:
Tier 1A UI, OAU and Unilag
Tier 1B ABU, Unilorin, Uniben, UNN and maybe a handful more.
Note: It is tier 1a and 1b, not tier 1 and 2. The difference is not much. Na you get your mouth sha. ABU! second tier university ? Do you even know where it is ? Obama greets Jonathan, tasks leaders on democratic model User Rating: /ᅡ Poor Best THE United States
President Barack Obama yesterday congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan on his victory at the presidential polls and indeed all Nigerians on the recent general elections. In a statement last night, Obama particularly praised the citizens for their patience and resolve to enhance democracy, through standing on long queues and waiting for the counting of their votes, which he alluded to their fervent desire to ensuring credible government. While acknowledging that balloting was free of intimidation and coercion, the US President deplored the violence that followed the April 16 , 2011 presidential election. “Violence has no place in a democratic society,” he said, and enjoined all Nigerians to reject it. Obama wants all Nigerian leaders and people to unite and build a laudable future and a model for Africa. The statement reads in full: “This morning, I called President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria to congratulate him on his election victory and to commend the people of Nigeria for their resolve and patience during last month’s historic presidential, legislative and gubernatorial elections. The success of the elections was a testament to Nigerian voters who waited in long lines, stayed to watch their votes counted and were determined that these elections mark a new chapter in Nigerian history. Credit also belongs to the Independent National Electoral Commission, the National Youth Service Corps, and Nigeria’s vibrant civil society, all of which must play a role in ensuring that the final results reflect the will of the Nigerian people and that Nigerian authorities investigate and address any allegations of fraud or irregularities. “While the majority of Nigerians cast their ballots free from intimidation and co |
Politics › Re: Nigeria: Igr (internally Generated Revenue) - Lagos, Sokoto Lead The Way by edoyad(m): 5:01pm On May 04, 2011 |
FACE: Which means that the heading is wrong. Rivers' IGR is far greater than Sokoto's IGR. 3 out of 5 is 60% while 40 out 80 is 50%, doesn't mean that 3 > 40 in real figures. That is not to take any thing away from Sokoto which has done well. Abia did well as well with fourth highest IGR at over 21B even with poor tax collection. With proper tax/accountability, Rivers, KD, Kano, Lagos, Anambra, Delta and Abia being the major commercial and industrial areas in the country will explode at the back pockets.
Now, someone mentioned the cement factory owned by Sokoto and the fact that they are taking advantage of the limestone deposits there. There are other cement factories in Nigeria using local limestones. The question is; does it mean that the specific minerals that the FG owns are coal, oil and gas ? Do these companies/states pay royalties to FG for tapping limestone, bauxite, aluminum etc ? If they don't, how is limestone for example different from oil/gas/coal ? Why are states not allowed to tap into oil/gas/coal but allowed to tap other resources ? Sokoto cement is actually a private company. It used to be owned by the FG before it was privatised by OBJ. Most cement companies in Nigeria are private. |
