A 25-year-old man, Henry Okoroagwu, narrowly escaped death after jumping into the River Niger in an apparent suicide attempt over the weekend in Onitsha, Anambra State.

Okoroagwu, a native of Amasiri in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, reportedly climbed the railings of the Niger Bridge in broad daylight and plunged into the river. Witnesses say he acted out of visible frustration.

Alert passersby and bystanders quickly raised an alarm, prompting a rapid response from local boat operators and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).

Engineer Omishola, Head of the Marine Unit at NIWA, confirmed that his team mobilized immediately after receiving the emergency call. According to him, their timely intervention was crucial to saving the young man’s life.

Local boat operator Mr. Peter Okenye, who participated in the rescue, recounted the experience:

By the time we reached him, he was already going under. It was by God’s grace we pulled him out alive. I’m thankful we were there at the right time.

After being rescued, Henry Okoroagwu revealed that feelings of hopelessness and emotional distress drove him to attempt suicide. He shared that he is the sixth child in his family and has been overwhelmed by personal struggles.

The victim was handed over to the NIWA Police Command for immediate care and mental health evaluation.

Sources within the commission told BusinessDay that Ramat arrived at the NERC headquarters accompanied by no fewer than 50 political backers and armed personnel and forcibly took over operations, dislodging existing Commissioners.

This illegal take over comes just one day after a statehouse press statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, clearly stated that all nominations, including Ramat’s, were “subject to Senate confirmation” and that the current acting chairman would remain in position pending Senate approval.

The Nigerian Senate is currently in recess and not scheduled to reconvene until September 23, casting doubt over the legitimacy of Ramat’s self-imposed takeover.

Ramat, a former chairman of Ungogo local government area (LGA) in Kano state from 2021 to 2024, was nominated by President Bola Tinubu to replace the current NERC chairman. But according to insiders, his controversial attempt to bypass the constitutional process has set off alarm bells across Nigeria’s power sector.

“This is not just illegal—it’s dangerous,” said a senior executive in the sector, who requested anonymity. “We have billions invested in this sector. Such political recklessness erodes investor confidence. NERC is a regulator, not a battleground.”

According to legal experts, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission Act provides clear procedures for the appointment and removal of commissioners and the chairman.

“A mere nomination does not equal appointment,” said one constitutional lawyer. “There is a tenure system at NERC, and any removal must follow due process. What happened today is a breach of that law.”

Experts in the sector are monitoring the unfolding dramatic takeover and labeling it as unconstitutional and advised that the proper process be followed.
Behind the scenes, political intrigue appears to be driving Ramat’s appointment which has stirred considerable concern among investors in the power sector who doubt the competence of the new appointees.

BusinessDay gathered that his actions are being backed by a powerful political figure that loiters around the Presidency and has the President’s ear, but with little
Knowledge of the industry. The figure is said to be instrumental in Ramat’s nomination and encouraging the power grab.

“He is throwing his weight around and trying to control regulatory appointments,” said a source familiar with the power struggle. “But this one may have gone too far.”

Stakeholders across the sector, including investors across the value chain, international investors, and consumer advocacy groups, have begun voicing concerns about what they describe as “a dangerous politicisation of the power regulatory framework.”

“It’s troubling,” said an executive in the sector. “This is not how a regulator should be run, and it sets a terrible precedent for governance and investment in Nigeria.”

As of press time, the Presidency had not issued a statement addressing the forceful takeover.

Nigeria’s electricity regulator is about to get a jolt of fresh energy. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Abdullahi Garba Ramat, 39, to lead the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in an acting capacity, pending Senate confirmation. It is an unusually young face for one of the country’s most technically complex and politically charged jobs—and that is precisely the point.

His résumé spans academia, local government, private enterprise and state-level power administration. As head of the Kano State Metropolitan Agency he cut energy costs through retrofitting projects; as chairman of Ungogo Local Government he digitised governance at the local levels, boosted revenue and built new operational structures from scratch.

This versatility matters. In an age when the power sector must embrace smart grids, renewable integration and digital oversight, a regulator who speaks the languages of engineering, data analytics and public policy is rare.

Mr. Ramat’s training in power transmission at Gonzaga University and his certifications from Microsoft and Harvard show a comfort with both the physical and the digital backbones of modern electricity systems. His career suggests he can navigate the politics of reform without losing sight of technical imperatives.

A younger regulator may also bring a different tempo. At 39, Mr Ramat belongs to a generation impatient with incrementalism, more open to experimenting with new business models, and attuned to the expectations of a digitally connected public. That mindset could help in tackling the twin challenges of attracting investment and holding operators to account—tasks in which regulatory credibility is as vital as technical expertise.

Sceptics will note that even the most qualified individual cannot conjure megawatts from thin air; the structural problems of Nigeria’s electricity market run deep. Yet leadership matters, especially when it is willing to combine discipline with innovation. If Mr Ramat can translate his record of reform into the national arena, NERC might begin to close the gap between promise and performance. The country’s power sector has waited too long for a surge in competence. With a fresh mind at the helm, it may finally be time to switch on.

Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, has suggested that Christians won’t support the presidential ticket having former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Mr Peter Obi come 2027.


Keyamo claimed that Nigerian pastors won’t come out to campaign for an 80-year-old Muslim president.

The Minister stated this while fielding questions on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics.


He said: “I want to do small expo, but it’s an expo that will not help them either way. Do you know what they are working on is that they want to bring Peter Obi and Atiku together.

“Once you make Obi the deputy to Atiku, the Christian demography will pull out of that 6 million votes Obi won in 2023.

“Don’t forget that the President also has a pastor who is a wife. So that Christian demographic we will snatch some of them and increase our votes.


“Don’t forget too that South-East demography that supported him, once it’s Atiku, they will pull out. They will not support him.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has issued a stern warning to Rauf Aregbesola, Interim National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), over his recent political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a fiery tweet, Onanuga accused the former Interior Minister of betrayal, reminding him that Tinubu was responsible for his rise from a “struggling party man” to commissioner in Lagos and later governor of Osun State.

Onanuga described Aregbesola’s current alliance with opposition forces as “perfidy”, insisting that anyone who turns against the president at this critical time would face consequences.
