Obire: Advocating Power Shift to the North in 2027 Undermines Equity and National Unity

Dr. Godwin Obire, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and Executive Assistant (Political) to the Delta State Governor, has described any call for a power shift from the South to the North in 2027 as unpatriotic and contrary to the principles of equity and national unity.

Speaking during an interactive session with journalists in Abuja on Saturday, Obire criticized what he termed a coalition of opposition figures, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, for opposing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s potential second-term bid. He argued that such opposition is unjustified and does not align with the long-standing understanding of rotational power between the North and South since the return to democratic rule in 1999.

“I strongly support the South completing its constitutionally permitted eight years,” Obire said. “It is unfair and against the spirit of equity for anyone to suggest a return of power to the North in 2027, especially after President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year tenure.”

He added, “Those pushing for a northern presidency at this point are not acting in the national interest. It shows a lack of patriotism and undermines the collective agreement that has helped maintain political stability.”

While acknowledging that political coalitions are common in democratic systems, Obire dismissed the current opposition alliance as ineffective, stating that it poses no real threat to the APC's electoral prospects in 2027.

Addressing criticisms of President Tinubu’s administration, Obire emphasized that two years is insufficient to judge the performance of any government. He highlighted achievements in socioeconomic and infrastructural development under Tinubu’s leadership within this short period.

On the recent wave of defections from opposition parties to the APC, Obire said it should not be misconstrued as the country leaning toward a one-party state. He pointed out that major opposition parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) still hold significant elective positions, including governorships.

Obire also expressed concern over the persistent insecurity in parts of the country, noting that it predates the current administration. He called for the reinforcement of community policing, involving traditional rulers, youth groups, and local stakeholders, as a way to enhance security at the grassroots level.

“To solve the problem, we must identify its root causes,” he said. “Community policing, led by local leaders and supported by security agencies, is key. We also need to strengthen border security with the active involvement of communities along those areas.”

He commended President Tinubu’s engagement with security chiefs and the National Security Adviser, expressing optimism that a lasting solution to the insecurity challenge is underway.

Tinubu has been the most incompetent Nigerian president so far for totally destroying Nigeria's economy and leading the country into oblivion.

Nobody can categorically point to where Nigeria is headed at the moment - no clear goals, no vision and concrete steps! We just sleep and wake up to hear politics, politics and politics with no clear development goals!

Peter Obi contesting in 2023 was the best decision ever. He proved his credentials as a leader that the generality of Nigerians have so much love and organic support for. It showed that the core north cannot win without terrorism. It shows that if the south can stand united, the core north will lose political relevance.

There is no north there as they claim for it is only the islamist core north of Kano, Katsina, zamfara, Sokoto and northern Kaduna. The rest is still up for grabs and still favours PO over the other candidates.

If after all the enrollment surge that was occasioned by NIN-SIM linkage that even foreigners from Niger, Chad, Benin were registering as Nigerians, total figure is a paltry 118m not even close to half of our projected 250m population, then it's obvious that we might not even be up to 200m in the final run.

As at the last count, INEC database had 94m Nigerians and even that still contains foreigners.

So how is the 250m claim justified in the midst of these figures?
