So you end up avoiding aircrafts altogether and miss all your appointments and opportunities. I will check safety/maintenance history of the aircraft and the management. I will check how they take care of their field workers(like the maintenance engineers and flight crew ). I will also check if the pilot is psychologically alright. iskalamong: Funnily enough, among the popular and solid stocks, those two seem to be the cheapest at the moment. Oando, very cheap. Access on the other hand is worth the risk for short term dividend play at N20.
In my opinion, market is in a hold state for those that want to JIJO. That is, if you’re in, you may wait to see if you can get a better exit price. If you’re out, you may wait to see if you can get a better bargain. Most stocks are around their fair value unless we see a shocker in results released or dividends declared.
However, those two stocks seem to be the potential plays for now. Oando at c.N40 and Access at c.N20.
Mind you, I excluded illiquid, very small cap and some other stocks (that rallies without revenue or operational evidence ) in my consideration.
It would be nice to hear the opinions of the house as well.

ultraviolet27: But not the government fault alone every Nigerians from the poor, unlettered,to the privileged and the wealthy are corrupt, greedy and self-centered because even when they (the government)release the trifle or meager fund for upgrading the laboratories or building new ones to the latest standard the university administrators(VC,Bursar and the register) and the leaders will embezzle it
I graduated from UI also and I knew many times funds were looted by the VC and the university even right from my 100 level days!!yet we face and curse our political leaders whereas all of us are worst and if the government decides to prosecute the offenders with efcc and icpc we,cry of witch-hunting and even defend the looters and say are the government officials also not looting? forgetting then when the foundation is weak a building won't stand
corruption needs to be tackled from the grassroots, as the youths that we see as the leaders of tomorrow are even worse come and see how the SU(student union executives) embezzle the institutions funds with reckless abandon which even trickles down to the departmental, faculty and hall of residences executives(governments) when I was in my final year my faculty president who was a female embezzled the faculty funds and grants and was even threatening that she couldn't be prosecuted is it someone like her that will get to the position of authority that won't embezzle billions of naira?if you can't be trusted with a little sum of money is it when you are faced with a larger sum you won't steal?
why those abroad universities are maintained and has up to date infrastructures are because they aren't fully government owned (joint ownership)infact they are almost privately owned that's why their tuition fees are costlier you know it's hard to embezzle from a private owned enterprise?that's why most private universities have good infrastructures in nigeria only they love exploiting their staffs!! You have rightly stated the obvious corrupt acts taking place at various level of the Nigerian society . Humans are the same all over the world and as such it is the judicial arm of government that correct or chastise those who break the law.So, corruption can only be fought by the government. And a corrupt government can't bring to book those embezzling funds for the building science laboratories in Nigerian schools. |

DoTheNeedful: Like I stated in my previous post, I am not saying all is well with our universities. However, I think it is exaggerated, especially for federal universities.
As someone with background in sciences, I agree with you about the dearth of good laboratories in our schools. That said, Nigerian graduates can still compete decently in many foreign universities.
I wasted a few years of my life in Nigeria because of comments like yours. Comments like yours do more to kill confidence in Nigerian graduates than trigger the government to spend more on education. When I got into a Ph.D. program in the US, I realized that I was not an outlier. I saw many graduates of Nigerian universities doing well and winning awards at top universities. I, and some Nigerians I know, have published at the top tier venues in our fields.
I am not a medical doctor, but I have seen many graduates of UCH, LUTH, ABUTH, UNNTH and OAUTH practicing at various big hospitals here. There are many stories in the news about Nigerian doctors leaving the country to various advanced countries of the world. Those stories are very true.
Nigerians are too negative. Please don't misunderstand me, I am not saying that all is well. All I am saying is that things are not as terrible as some of you make them.
As for your comparison of China to the US in the area of science, I disagree. The US is still above China. In fact, I still rate Japan ahead of China in science and technology. There are ideas in scientific research community that are termed groundbreaking. Most of such are still coming from the US, Japan, Germany, Canada and so on. China is good at making incremental and cosmetic improvements to groundbreaking ideas coming from the US and other countries. They also spend too much cyberattack effort stealing confidential ideas from the US and other advanced countries. If Nigeria's science education is not as bad as you wrote, then why do folks like yourself run away to places like the USA or the UK? Nigeria's science education is very poor;you can't practise science(whether Medicine, Dentistry,Engineering,Physics,et cetera) in an environment with poor laboratories and inadequate equipments. China is the greatest country in modern scientific innovations and China's industries have the highest level of efficiency. From primary to tertiary education level, China's science laboratories are up to date;and this has resulted to 'Made in China' goods which is found in every countries of the world. |

nairalanda1: That's the problem. Corruption is making a bad situation worse.
Poor funding is due to our reliance on one resource. Which is kind of why most subsaharan African countries are poor. We rely on oil.and since we don't control the sale price of that oil , it creates funding issues
Like now , a large proprtion of this year's budget is being funded by borrowing because oil prices haven't been high enough
Corruption results from our sharing money economics. So long as the oil money flows , who cares about actual industrial development and a actually prospering economy? If the Nigerian government can genuinely fund science and technology education right from the primary or elementary school to the higher education level, Nigeria will become a developed country in 20 years time. China is a good example of a country that has genuinely funded science and technical education;and this has made Chinese industries the most efficient in the world in 2026. |

DoTheNeedful: Some Nigerians enjoy trashing Nigerian universities.
Having studied in Nigerian federal universities and earning a doctorate in the US, I can say that Nigerian universities are not as terrible as some people make them out to be. I am not claiming that everything is perfect but Nigerians are often too hard on the country’s university system.
You would be surprised at the accomplishments of recent graduates from Nigerian universities in top American universities and research institutions. During my graduate studies, I never felt like an outlier in classes filled with students from the US, China, Iran, India, Europe, and elsewhere. Science without adequate experimentation is equivalent to falsehood! Can you boldly say science laboratories(including the Anatomy cadaver laboratory for basic medical students) in the University of Ibadan is modern and properly managed? Can you boldly say the University College Hospital(UCH)in Ibadan has good laboratories (including the mortuary)and hospital facilities? What if I tell you that the great China has overtaken the USA in terms of science and technology. I'm very sure you are of the opinion that the USA is greater than China in science and technology in 2026. The level of mediocrity in pure science related courses in the Nigerian public universities is unbelievable. |

And even if we fight corruption, as I said ,we still have the funding issue left over..hence we got to look for solutions to that Corruption is directly or indirectly contributing to poor funding. If not for corruption, why should defence get higher funds than education in the 2026 budget of Nigeria? |
Education › Re: UI Emerges Best Nigerian University In Law, Medicine by EDUECO(m): 9:58am On Jan 25 |
nairalanda1: 1. Ending embezzlement won't do anything. It still leaves the issue of funding as the elephant in the room. That's why we need a leadership that would fight corruption, tax more of the gdp and allow.for.things like rises in fees. Or we can just have corrupt free mediocre universities.
2. We need more funding than that. Hence the need for a.indistrial economy..not our oil dependent economy..no country is going to find money for you Are you aware of the embezzlement of funds for laboratories in public universities? Even when the funding is tripled, the looting will still continue. |
Education › Re: UI Emerges Best Nigerian University In Law, Medicine by EDUECO(m): 9:49am On Jan 25 |
nairalanda1: Even if we ended embezzlement,it's not going to make universities better. Budget for education would still remain too low to turn universities into world class. I mean , advanced labs cost a lot of money. Remove embezzlement and we still have the same 4-5 billion dollars for over 100 universities, even more polytechnics and countless secondary and primary schools. Nothing would get fixed
I don't see anywhere where I denied mediocre leadership is our problem. In my post I even show you how mediocre leadership works in making Nigeria bad self.
But to make myself clear, our leaders and followers treat Nigerian economy as a national cake to be divided, not as a farm that needs to yield more fruit. We have worked on the idea that we need to sell oil and share the money equitably.
The problem is, oil prices dont favor us, so we quickly run into debt and also that kind of idea promotes corruption. That's how mediocre our leadership idea are.
Focus on indistrial development and on taxing the gdp more and on not starving vital things like the power sector in the name of poverty and things will improve. Ending embezzlement will make pure science related courses in Nigerian public universities better; because the budgeted funds for the laboratories will improve the quality and modernize the laboratories. The innovations from these laboratories will attract more funding from industries. In the USA,innovative laboratories get funding from industries;and I also believe innovative or productive laboratories will also get funding in Nigeria. |

nairalanda1: And that's largely the fault of Nigerians .
Most of you support leaders on the idea that it is our turn to rule. Many of you also support the idea of a national cake
That promotes an economy that is resource dependent, not dependent on industries and so forth. So long as the oil money flows, and is shared well, we don't need to develop a local industry
Infact on this site, I have seen many people asking why we are not like Libya and Saudi Arabia because they are oil producers. I don't see Nigerians asking why we are not like Japan or south Korea or even china and Germany and even the USA. It's because most of us think that we should live like trust fund babies. Not like industrialist people. All our needs being met by selling oil money and using it for passive income.
When you do that, there is no room for industries. That affects our universities badly. Because if there are no industries it makes no financial sense for universities to fund up to date labs since that would drive them into horrendous debt. Also abroad it's industries that fund universities partially or fully. This enables universities to pay for good labs and so forth to train the future innovations and so forth.
Finally, our national cake idea means that most of us want to go to school for cheap. That means fees have been kept very very low. Check all the leading global universities. They charge high fees or they also are paid for by state funding which comes from very high taxes . Nigerian government universities for the most part are cash strapped.
How bad is it. ? Last year, Harvard spent 6 billion dollars as it's budget. The entire Nigerian education sector , ie primary to tertiary spent about half of that. And you expect them to be like world leading universities? Some states even don't spend as much as a few million dollars on education , which is why they have wretched looking facilities.
And yet we keep sabotaging education by voting for leaders like tinubu and even the rest who promise a share of the oil money rather than development to improve the earning of money for our nation.Even nelfund that tinubu is promoting is band aid on a very open wound. And we oppose improving tax revenue as well as fighting corruption unless it is our enemy.
So what do you expect? I still stand by what I wrote before that pure science courses in Nigeria public universities are the biggest scam in the world. I don't have anything against social sciences, arts, and law. Laboratory is the real foundation of science and technology. You can't practise real pure science without modern laboratories. I was once a student of a highly rated public university in Nigeria. And their laboratories were outdated and poorly managed. |

So what do you expect? The real problem of Nigeria is mediocre leadership. Leadership starts from the family and it's also very poor in most Nigerian families. Poor laboratories infrastructure in Nigerian public universities is not only as a result of poor funding from government and industries/NGOs. In most cases the funds given to the universities are embezzled by the leaders in the universities. And the maintenance culture of the available laboratories is very poor. |

BabsO2: China is made up of regions that compete in growth of their respective GDP’s. They do not operate a feeding bottle economy where money is collected by central government to be shared to regions like Nigeria share money to states from the centre. Each region struggles to make its money by producing things. That’s like each state in Nigeria actively working for the state to be attractive to people and businesses and making its money. And not waiting for money to be coming from a center even if the state is unproductive and contributing nothing to the prosperity of the Nation. That’s one of the reasons China got to its current level - internal regional competition at growing regional GDP’s through hard work. 60 to 70 percent of funds for capital projects is being embezzled in most states of Nigeria. In China ,99.9 percent of funds for capital projects is being utilized in all provinces or states of China. The major problem of Nigeria is the political class. |
