Education / Campus Politics, Hit Or Miss? by EduRegard: 6:23pm On May 23, 2016
Many, I expect, at the sight or sound of the term “campus politics” would either have the cold shivers or would give a sigh, thus declaring their innermost fear of being a part of anything affiliated to the word. Well, my dear readers, if this are, or continue to be our reaction to campus politics, then it will only be apt to begin by enlightening ourselves on its significance and meaning in order for us not to run no more in a campus politics of probability, because we must learn to understand that it is a ‘force’ that will continue to play its role in shaping our future, profession, life etc. whether we will it or otherwise.

Politics is described as the authoritative allocation of values for the society, according to the Canadian Professor of Political Science, David Easton. By this, he meant that politics encompasses the various processes through which government or School authority responds to pressure from larger society, in particular by allocating benefits, rewards or penalties. Also, Haroldz Dwight Lasswell, a scholar defined politics as simply “who get what, when and how”, this
implies that the nature of politics is about the distribution of power in a society.

Thus, if I am aloof about politics- the very activity through which my students Association, school can respond to my needs and pressure, then I cannot complain when the Association does not meet this need or hearken to my pressure. If I detach myself from politics then I am throwing away my powers to decide how benefits, rewards and
penalties which are not far-fetched are allocated.

More interestingly, let us look at the causes of this disinterest in politics with a view to helping ourselves out of their strong grip of hit or miss orientation. The popular term for this indifference and insensitivity to politics on and off campuses is known as “political Apathy”, it is the absence or suppression of passion, emotion in politics or its activities. On our campuses nowadays, this trend has become so imminent amidst the student, in which the ratio of it to the political enthusiasts is relatively low and not encouraging.

Having diagnosed the problem, the next thing to look at is what I called “pathogenesis of campus politics hit or miss?” knowing fully well that we are in an academic environment where our priority is to study or excel in our various fields. Albert Einstein said, “Politics is for the present, but equation is for eternity”, true as this may sound, but do not forget that our present determines more for our future talk more of eternity.

Truly, we may see politics as rough, filthy, not for the gentleman or lady or as a hit or miss basis. But really, it is viewed so because our own apathy has let the bad eggs dominate politics and let them take decision which affects our lives.” Politics is not a game but an earnest business” as Winston Churchill says, and then our business is to be conscious politically and act well in campus politics.

Ellie Wiesel said, “there may be time we are powerless to prevent injustice but there must never be a time we fail to protest.” We must also remember that “whenever a man cast a longing eye on offices, rottenness begins in his conduct”, therefore, the eyes should never be on the office but on the work in the office and the people who own and
gave you the office.

In conclusion, with these said, I encourage you readers, take that decision to be part of the campus politics enthusiast and movement by being conscious. Remember, indecision is a decision in itself. Be conscious and make the conscious choice that politics should never be treated or seen as a hit or miss affair, rather as a necessity and optimal!!!!

What do you think

Education / Students Going Into Relationships On Campus, Do Or Don’t? by EduRegard: 4:42pm On May 22, 2016
Relationships have become something that people have misunderstood. Relationship is actually a divine orchestration which we cannot do without and I believe that with a proper understanding of it, people would grow to treasure relationships.

Relationship is an institution set up to create interaction between people so as to ensure continuity of life, balance of nature and inner satisfaction for everybody. Relationship brings men of like minds together to build a great thing, it inspires love in people for friendship. Relationship keeps the world moving and the earth spinning.

Even though there are different kinds of relationship, sexual relationship seems to be the most important for the continuity of life. The race of men will cease to exist if it vanishes, and the world will be a wasteland. Sexual relationship exist also to satisfy the urge and sexual desire of every man.

From a Nigeria-based statistics, it has been discovered that, the most enduring sexual relationships that exists are actually those that started while at school such as tertiary institutions, because at the time, folks are still young, tender and sincere, and these relationships make it through to marriage. The same cannot be spoken of for those who are already out of school and are looking for somebody they barely know to build a relationship with, most of the opportunities that surface usually end up as a “trial and error”. Therefore, I am opined that, apart from learning and skill development which is imparted at school, it is also an opportunity where good relationship structures can be built.

The only disadvantage I see in engaging in sexual relationship while at school is distraction from academics, but if folks can keep themselves in check and also desist from entering relationship in the early stages of their stay at school, it can work. Distractions are normal things for everyone to face, a universal examination that everyone go through and it should not be an excuse for not going into relationship.

However, I must highlight here that, by sexual relationships, I do not mean that the parties involved can perform illicit acts while at school, but I am talking about the beautiful sexual relationship of love, affection, hopes and passion that leads into the beautiful institution that we call “marriage”, where the certificate called “beautiful kids” is received. It should remain clean and the parties undefiled until the marriage tent has been entered.

Now, what's your take on this?

This kind of crap is only written by those who think education and money is synonymous. I no blame the person sha, it is what our society has turned to...money, money and money without any value.

Real education enlightens the mind and sets it free from shackles of slavery. Nothing stops an educated mind from owning a successful business ventures but there us usually a shortcoming in owning a business without proper education.

We don't need to keep repeating this. See ur reply below.

Education / Why I Think Degree Education Is Overrated In Nigeria - Michael Roman by EduRegard: 3:38pm On May 21, 2016
He half walked, half dragged to the front of my aunt’s vet store. I had no choice but help aunty Kemi man the place as she is trying to open yet another store in Ikeja.

I was counting on my fingers, trying to find out how many days we had before we resumed back to school. This holiday had been as boring as watching paint dry. I was counting my remaining days of boredom when he knocked, taking me away from my reverie.

He instantly reminded me of Frank Donga. “Please, is there vacancy here? ” he asked. I looked at him from head to toe. His shirt had definitely seen better days. His hair was like a refuse dump and his mouth smelled like a mortuary. His shoes reminded me of canoes. Worn out canoes.

I was still assessing his unpresentable appearance when he shoved photocopied documents into my hands.

“Please sir, I have bsc and msc zoology from OAU, ife”. I thought he was joking. A quick scan of the papers confirmed my fears.

He continued “please give me a job, any job. I will work for free for three months if you want. Please!”. Desperation oozed from his thin frame.

He must have thought I owned the place. “No vacancy” slipped from my lips. He looked at me, fought back tears and snatched his papers. He trudged on.

I watched him go. My aunt who owed the store this masters degree holder is begging for a job didn’t go to any university. Her business is worth over thirty million naira. She always told me the university is a cage that force you to sit behind a desk for four years so you’ll be qualified to sit behind another desk for forty years.

She said university will teach you to look for jobs but never create one. It will teach you yo work for a living but never have a life. I sat. I thought.

She had blamed the craze on the oil boom in the seventies. Then, graduates were entitled to cars and automatic jobs.

She said people still live in that delusion. She told me the richest man alive is a college dropout who followed his dream.

She asked what my dream was. She said ” do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”. I am convinced, college degrees are overrated.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
